It’s basically impossible to get a still shot of the @twigandtale #rainhavenoveralls so let’s focus rather on the ease of movement! This pattern was a great, quick sew. The hardest part was sewing with unforgiving raincoat fabric. I had some issues with the stitching being very visible due to the needle causing the color of the fabric to flake off around the hole. In the end, the method that seemed to work best to avoid the color flaking off was wetting the fabric prior to sewing. The only real modification that I made was adding an elastic band to the back to hold the straps in place and prevent them from falling down. The initial strap issue was probably due to the fact that I did not use elastic to make the actual straps, and so the straps are never on very tight. Been slow on posting my last few makes because of the festive season. It was in June this year that I started to think about what to pack for our holiday (this was before I found out that Decathlon sold waterproof winter overalls). I really wanted to get a head start so I bought the #rainhavenoveralls #sewingpattern from @twigandtale The pattern was easy to follow but I wasn’t sure how to proceed with the straps due to the number of options available. After some help guidance from @twigandtale I went on to use elastic and a small amount of webbing which worked perfectly. I joined the Twig + Tale Sew-alongs Facebook group as well as it included other helpful resources for other patterns. For these overalls, I used the only soft shell fabric I could find from @spotlightstores and opted to seal the seams with sealing tape. They kept my kids dry and warm throughout our entire trip in snow country. While these overalls won’t see much use in a country like Singapore, I’m glad that they were designed to grow with your child. So I look forward to making use of them again. No rustling in the woods! I haven't tried it out on a super rainy day but that's coming. The pattern is easy to sew with good tips about sewing with reclaimed hardware (buckles were from an old backpack) and reclaimed fabric. 4// this is a practical make, I wanted a paire of overall too keep my daughter dry at the playground during the wet winter months. It’s made from a repurposed rain jacket, and the appliqué on the pocket is from a sample of cotton canvas by See You at Six. A few thoughts on repurposing a large adult jacket for a child garment: choosing a jacket where the sleeves and back panel are made of one piece of fabric is ideal. Mine had a drawstring at the waist, so I lost potential for larger pattern pieces there, but luckily there was also a large “over-flap” back piece. I think a large waterproof trench coat would be ideal for next time. Although I still have enough leftovers fabric for knees patch on a next pair or a matching hat! Speaking of patches, the pattern has optional knees and bum patches which I omitted… and immediately I regretted it. A few things I’ve been making the past few weeks! 🥰🩷 Usually I think of myself as a pretty selfish sewist… but this proves that I also DO make things for others!! 😆 I’ll keep it as evidence!! Handmade clothes deserve to be worn to pieces. To get muddy and covered in bits of tree and to be washed and reworn over and over and over. Tiny Dragon has been wearing these waterproof softshell Rainhaven dungarees for nearly two years at forest school and general woodland play now, and the Pathfinder dragon jacket since last summer. Both have taken a beating! But I make things to be worn and used and loved, not to look beautiful in a photograph. Having something worn right until it's worn out is the best compliment to me. Water-resistant but breathable softshell trousers with knee and bum reinforcement patches, and side patch pockets. Perfect for forest school and farm trails! Rain gear always has the trade-off between completely waterproof but sweaty and being breathable, but for anything short of torrential rain for hours I find softshell the best compromise. It's rated showerproof and you can look after it by washing it with nikwax or similar every so often, but it's also breathable, soft, and slightly stretchy. My own softshell dungarees are on the third year of keeping me completely dry at forest school when sitting on damp logs. And softshell takes prints *really* well! I love this colour combination chosen by Cat here. I’ve been working on these Rainhaven Overalls in the background, as they fill a bit of a need area. It’s also a pattern that I have owned for a long time and for far too long, thought was too difficult for me (spoiler: it wasn’t and the instructions are fabulous!). My youngest child has to do school drop offs and pick ups for older siblings and both locations involve parks. With winter coming, it’s more often damp, but I still want to provide those park opportunities. This month, with the Storyteller theme of Renew, I’ve renewed my attitude to an “I can” and I’m so very excited for these Rainhavens and the wet park trips that will be made easier. After months of waiting, Jack finally has a whale embroidery on a piece of clothing. Perhaps people will remember that I made these #ttrainhavenoveralls overalls last Fall, intending them to be for Jack, and then they were just way too long. Thankfully it wasn't a lost cause because they fit me perfectly and I have been wearing them tons ever since. But I still needed to make Jack something with a whale embroidered on it. The @twigandtale Storytellers are talking about color this month, and this fabric, which I got from @scrappyelephant last year, really is over the top in the color department. I determined that I needed to embroider a whale which would really stand out from wildness of the background. The #ttwhaleembroidery bundle includes a narwhal for which mostly white thread is recommended. I thought this was the one to go with, and I think the choice was right. I used a simple, curved bottom patch pocket as the palette on which to embroider and then added it to the front of the shirt when it was finished. And now Jack and I both have whale embroidery on something, which is awesome! People frequently ask me, "Why a whale?" I usually answer, "Well, the overalls were supposed to be for Jack, who loves whales, but they were too big for him, so I wear them." But that is a bit long-winded I think. It has been an unseasonably warm and sunny fall so far in Atlantic Canada, but the weather is starting to shift to the usual wet, windy and cold we expect this time of year. I bought this softshell over two years ago with plans to make something like this. My big kid recently discovered the dino print and was asking me for a shirt. He was equally (if not more) thrilled with the idea of rain pants, and insisted they be overalls. The little one needs the easy on/off of pants right now, and she is very excited about the big pockets and purple snaps. I just had enough of the two prints for the pants, dashing my original plan of matching hats. I was able to make them hats to match each other, which they’re pretty thrilled with. I am sitting at home, recovering from some virus that I got from Jack who got it at school. It is quiet here during the days without him. I miss his hugs and his hilarious comments. I don't miss our fights. I am trying to take things slow, allow myself to feel all the relief and all the grief. It is a huge and messy mix right now. I have turned to sewing some things for Jack for this Fall as a consolation, and also because he needs things. He has grown SO much this year. I am going to make him a pair of #ttrainhavenoveralls since he outgrew both of his pairs of Heyday dungarees. I wanted to try a pair of overalls that are more like Carhartts, the type you wear over other things. Jack adores embellished clothing. Quilt blocks and applique are my usual forte but I had to take the opportunity to try embroidery for #slowsewing, the theme for the #ttstorytellers this month. These Rainhaven overalls and rain hat turned out perfectly. I skipped a lot of the steps since the fabric was quite thick. No facing on the top of the overalls, just turned the edges once. I did include the stirrup straps to help keep the pants legs in place. No earguard or band in the hat either. The overalls are part of the rainwear collection by @twigandtale and are designed to be worn over other clothes so will be perfect for bush kinder days. The sou’wester hat is part of the same Rainhaven collection and a quick sew. First looks at my hot-off-the-machine #ttrainhavenoveralls ! I have been really delighted to be a part of the #ttstorytellers this year, taking the time to think about the "whys" behind our sewing projects. The theme for this month is Seasonal. I have always been a terrible cold weather sewist, mostly because my favorite things to make and wear are flowy, summer dresses and sleeveless tops. However, I was determined this year to actually sew for the season, especially since Jack has almost no cold weather clothing that fits him. So, full disclosure, these were supposed to be for him and were woefully too big. @twigandtale has written their newer adult patterns, and drafted some of their older adult patterns to include tween sizes. The men's/straight fit Rainhavens have not had this redrafting. I did not realize this when embarking on this make, and therefore was simply not able to shorten the pattern pieces enough for Jack's height. On the positive side, the overalls fit me perfectly! I like overalls as a base layer, rather than an over-layer, most of the time. If I was to make the Rainhavens in the straight fit for myself I would have cut a size 38, which would have had a LOT of ease. I cut a size 34 and they are the perfect size for wearing on their own, with enough space underneath for fuzzy leggings for extra warmth if needed. I can bend and move in them like a champ, but also I wear them, rather than the other way around, which is exactly how I like it . More details in later posts to come, as these were a lot of work, and they have a lot of special details.
