She wore it that year and the next, then the middle girl wore it for 2023 and 2024, and now the youngest gets to wear it. I redid the appliqué on the machine for this year as it was partly detached from my hand sewing all those years ago. So many hats! I started and just couldn't stop, so now there's a collection of reversible, eco printed sun hats on my Etsy page. Sewing with eco printed fabric is so fun since the patterns are unique and varied. Rather than being primarily about the shape of the item produced, the print entirely changes the character and flavor of each piece. As a person who gets bored after knitting just one sock, I find that repeat projects using eco printed fabric continue to hold my interest. Squeezing in what sewing I can with a newborn at home! Having found out that babies are not allowed sunscreens, this adorable Sunny Hat, a free pattern from @twigandtale is the perfect solution to allow us to still go out this summer! I extended the brim a little for more coverage and to give a more petally shape to the hat (they also have an official flower hat add on on their website). The weather has taken a turn over the last two days—it’s been pretty chilly again! But I’m still enjoying the longer days and so happy we’re back to working on the garden. And since it’s cold again… here’s a bit of a late post from before Lent. We celebrated Carnival! I never used to be a Carnival person, and I still can’t fully relate to the die-hard Dutch revelers, but over the years, it’s become one of my favorite holidays here. I love how everyone goes all out with costumes. Having kids reminds me how fun it is to dress up—not just to become someone else, but also to figure out how to bring a certain look to life. This year, I wanted to be a flower child—a bluebell, to be exact—after being inspired by this dreamy image. I searched for a pattern or tutorial but couldn’t find one, so I got creative! I remembered that @TwigandTale has a sunny hat pattern that could work as a base. I lengthened the pieces and added a rounded brim to mimic the shape of a bluebell. Apparently I make hats now…😆 Freya needed a new hat, and I happen to have found the perfect pattern! It’s free, it’s scrap busting, it’s reversible, and easy to make. Yep, this is the #sunnyhat by @twigandtale I adore the 6-piece design, which means you can use up tiny scraps and there’s no easing around a circle to mess about with. The instructions were one of the best I’ve ever come across - the little optional details were all so neat and professional looking. There’s even a tutorial on how to add chin straps (which Freya always insists is a must for hats). I used up some really old cotton poplin from my scrap bin, and a cute Peter Rabbit quilting remnant from @thenestcommunity, which I picked up for 50c! Freya has hardly taken this hat off for nearly a week🤣 I think it I safe to say that she likes it. It looks particularly good with the mummy made sundress, if I may say so myself. I can definitely see many more of these in our future. Just a loadful of photos this time for the now *complete* doll (Poppy, as named by B) and her clothes set. I even remembered to finally add the 'blushing' to the doll's face... AFTER all the pictures were taken (swipe to last picture) 😅 It was almost entrancing to see the difference a little rouge can make! So much fun, learning and surprises have been had on these. Hopefully the photos (and reel on previous post) help to tell the stories that I can't find the words easily for. I don't think a camera will ever feel natural in my hands, but I do love how the pictures help to preserve, for me, a little bit of that moment and joy of completing a heartfelt item for a loved one. 🍄🍄 Now that it has been gifted, I can finally share what I’ve been working on recently. This cute little Fairy House was such a joy to make for a friend’s daughter for Christmas as slow projects, with lots of small details, are my favourite. I started the house with no concrete plan in mind and added each little idea as I went along. The result is this beautiful little play house, with removable flower roof, to use with peg dolls, Sylvanians or anything else imaginable. My daughters love theirs that I made a few years ago and they’re definitely an heirloom piece that is made to last. 🍄🍄 I used the @twigandtale Toadstool House pattern with a few changes to make it hollow. Instead of the Mushroom Cap roof, I used the Sunny hat(with the flower add on) to cut the flower shape from stiff felt. All the small details were done by hand, including the construction of the flower top. Hopefully it is well loved ❤️

In between the sewing challenges and enjoying time away from work with the kids on school holidays, we found ourselves down at the beach (before all the wet weather hit). . Another Queensland-holiday-related-sewing-idea came to mind and I realised the kids each needed new hats for the trip! So out came my faithful #ttsunnyhat pattern by @twigandtale 🌞 .
