While it can add to the time spent on a project, I find something so satisfying in turning a pile of scraps that would otherwise be wasted, into something useable to enjoy for a long time to come. Trash to treasure, if you will! I wanted to make slippers for my daughters for Christmas last year; naturally I ran out of time. Once the weather finally turned colder my older daughter actually started asking me for slippers, so I got round to making these @twigandtale #wayfarershoes I wanted to make them out of felted wool to keep them cosy, and by far the hardest part of the project was finding some secondhand wool to felt. Every time I looked in shops it was always super wash, or with too much synthetic content to felt. So this Summer when we were in England I asked my family if they had any accidentally felted items, and my Gran provided this pink scarf and brown holey socks. They were both perfect with just enough fabric. The linings are also repurposed from a secondhand Liberty shirt and scraps from previous projects. I made the soles from leather deadstock after some targeted advertising on Facebook marketplace sent me and my sister in law to a leather sale in an industrial estate here in Budapest… The only things I really had to buy were the iron on transfers, which I chose for speed over embroidery. I particularly like the butterflies I found for my older daughter which match the colours so well. Frustratingly I bought two then by the time I got home I’d lost one so had to go and buy another! The slippers were a a pretty simple project though quite fiddly, I lost the elastic and had to unpick more than once and I would have found the whole thing frustrating if I were still a beginner. It’s also quite difficult to gauge the size and how tight the elastic needs to be until the end. I made both pairs 2 sizes bigger than their feet as per the instructions for thick fabric, and I would say they fit well but will be outgrown by the end of Winter. When I was halfway through I considered switching the wool and lining but decided to stick with them because of the butterflies / ladybirds. I’m not sure if that was the right choice as the pink ones especially are very soft and fluffy and pilling like mad. They have a layer of wool between the sole and lining for extra warmth / cushioning. Both my daughters initially rejected the slippers then changed their minds quite quickly!

I made my dad, a consummate mountain man, a pair of #wayfarershoes with his mountain embroidered on them, and he delighted me by wearing them immediately for a whole ski weekend. (They really are the best ski weekend accessories!) New slippers for the girls completed the set, E1 got wildflowers and E2 her favorite animal, the octopus! I recently made some baby slippers for our neighbors’ baby (see a few posts back). When I showed them to another neighbor, she asked if I would make some for someone who just had a baby boy. She didn’t want anything too flashy. I had this chambray in my stash for the outer fabric, and some mammoth flannel for the lining (see second pic). What’s great about these shoes is that they’re reversible if the hand stitching of the lining closure is done carefully. I used a ladder stitch, and it’s practically invisible. Pattern is Wayfarer Shoes by @twigandtale This is my third pair of the baby size. I’m getting lots of practice before I make my own. W is for Wayfarer slippers! A new pair of slippers completed for my husband. Upcycled from an old flannel shirt, an old pair of jeans, and a scrap of leather for the soles. I’m really impressed with my sewing machine for coping with it, at one point sewing through 2 layers of denim, 1 layer of flannel, 1 quilted layer of flannel and 1 layer of leather! I’ve been promising my husband some slippers for an embarrassingly long time. Finally got his feet measured and a pair of @twigandtale Wayfarer slippers cut out. I’m using an old pair of jeans for the outer, lined with a soft flannel shirt. I’ve got a scrap of leather for the soles. Finished the @twigandtale #wayfarershoes ! One was hand sewn only, the other was hand sewn until I got to attaching the soles, at which point I gave up and went to the machine. The result is pretty comfortable, although I'm not sure what's going on with the heel. I think I cut the elastic too short- a mere flannel lining doesn't really constitute 'thick fabric'- but I also have about a fingertip's width of excess space between the tip of my big toe and the seam when I slide my foot all the way back, so I may simply have selected the wrong pattern size. It's slipper season! Trying out a different pattern from a new to me pattern designer. These are the children's wayfarer shoes from @twigandtale . They were perfect for using up scraps and came together pretty quickly. They call for 6mm elastic but I only had 9mm but just made the elastic channel a little wider and it was fine. The outer fabric is a @dashwoodstudio cotton from @minervadotcom that little man picked a while ago because he liked the bikes and camping pictures 🚴🏼 Inner is made up of some Sherpa scraps I had. It really is that easy!⁣ ⁣ As far as the outside and lining of your shoe, the options are about as varied as your imagination - almost any mid- to heavyweight fabric will work. From winter woolens and flannels to light linens and cottons, there are options for nearly every season and style. And they require little more than scraps, for great scrapbuster or upcycle projects. ⁣ ⁣ For soles, your intended use can help you decide. For indoor shoes when traction is not a concern, many heavyweight materials will do, such as denim, canvas, twill and others. The same is true for non-walkers.⁣ ⁣ However, please always consider safety when making choices for slick floors, or for wearers with limited mobility or balance. In these instances when traction is required for your shoes, you can consider purpose made products like "grippy dot" fabric or ToughTek, to options like real or faux leather or vinyl which has adequate texture. You can also create your own sole material using products like Sock Stop, or other DIY options. Whichever you choose, please test them throughly on your household walking surfaces before use to ensure safety. ⁣ ⁣ For outdoor use, leather is often adequate for anything but the wettest of environments. It absolutely can! ⁣ ⁣ Depending on your needs, it's as simple as using a leather sole, for light duty/dry use, or using a high-quality glue to add a sturdy sole - we've seen members of our creative community use everything from purpose-made soling materials like ToughTek or rubber soling sheets, to creative DIY solutions like rubber mats. @monicasparadijs used Vibram soling on this pair - aren't they wonderful?⁣ ⁣ Have you ever made any outdoor-friendly friendly T+T footwear? A new pair of slippers for Bob! Bless him, he's been asking for a pair for ages as his 'boob slippers' are looking a little beaten (they are 🐾Merlins go to fetch item when you enter the house!!) The boob slippers are the same pattern but in boob printed fabric😆 . This is the @twigandtale Wayfarer Shoe pattern . My machine had a bit of a struggle with these this time as I had used some pretty hefty fabrics 🙄🤭 . There were A LOT of thick layers to get through. I changed my needle to a Jeans needle, extended the stitch length and reduced the thread tension and sewed really slowly and bless it, we got there in the end!!! I use a @brothersewinguk machine and it's an absolute beaut😍 . 🪡The outer is a canvas cushion cover from @ikeauk 🪡The lining is a 🧶wool blend from inside of an old jacket (it was pretty thick fabric but just looked so cozy☺️) 🪡The sole is some beautiful leather offcut I bought from a lovely makers shop in York before Xmas 🪡Then I have padded the footbed with some foam disable interfacing So LOTS OF THICK LAYERS😆😆 . Details - little embroidery details added stitch by stitch to create something lovely. I love a detail but I'm not always patient enough to put that extra effort in, the storytellers theme for April being details really made me focus and it may have took the whole month but I got there and now have a lovely pair of matching slippers in a sage green linen cotton blend. Patterns used are all from @twigandtale the shoes are Wayfarers one in adult size C and one in child size Baby 1. The embroidery is part of the woodland alphabet embroidery pattern. 🍁🍂Cozy Slippers I love to upcycle old wool sweaters and use every scrap of precious fabrics, especially woolen fabrics. I used an old merino sweater for the lining of these Wayfarers and my daughter meticulously cut out the leaves from some scraps of boiled wool fabric for the leaves. The outer is some sort of wool blend from the opp shop. They turned out so cute and cosy warm...I need to find more old sweaters to make a big pair now😉 This project was inspired by the "Renew" theme of the Twig &Tale Storytellers , which was actually back in May! And so at long last they are finished and being enjoyed by Mr 5. Made him some @twigandtale #ttwayfarershoes and they turned out so sweet. I had plans to make them match his new vest but alas he had other plans. When he saw me admiring the new sea shell embroidery ( I had to grab it straight away) he immediately said thats what he wanted and he could dream of the beach when he wore them ♥️🏝️🐚 I really couldn’t argue with that. These shoes/ slippers are the perfect scrap buster pattern. They are so well put together with no visible seams, so nice and tidy. When you turn them out it’s a little like magic from pancake to slippers ☺️ This was such a fun make and have felt achievable even when I haven’t had much time for making lately. Finally getting around to sharing my May #TTStorytellers project. Mays theme was renew so I decided to make the kids some #TTWayfarerShoes I played around with my scraps and chose to use this fun fish fabric for my step son’s shoes and ant fabric for my daughters. I love being able to actually use my scrap fabric and give it new life instead of just hoarding it. This was the most perfect project to do just that! The lining is some beautiful linen fabric that I dyed (it’s actually the fabric I used for my bluish Meadow Skirt! The theme for the month of April on our Twig + Tale Storytellers group is "Details" and so I was very intentional with the project I chose for this month. Baby S. just started nursery school and it was clear he would be taking his first steps soon. Of course I wanted him to do so in a pair of cozy shoes and so I rushed to make him these #ttwayfarershoes with a few details that spark lovely memories. These adorable shoes are made with leather that belonged to my late father-in-law, who learned the trade of saddler when he was young. Using his leather scraps is a way to keep him among us. I made the heel out of denim from my now retired maternity jeans. I lived in those jeans! The lining and appliqués on the front are from a fabric I bought to make a few pieces for my eldest son when he was still a baby. Yes, I held on to tiny scraps of that fabric for the last 5 years... but only because I knew that my future self would need them for this project 😁 This pattern was provided to me for free as a member of the Twig + Tale Storytellers team. Happy Feast of St. Nicholas today! Everyone outgrew last years slippers, so about a month ago I made a new pair to set out for the children with some chocolate and treats today. I used both linen and corduroy for the outer fabric, flannel for the inside, and leather for the bottom of all the shoes. This year I used my machine to embroider instead of hand embroidering them. My slippers are done! I made these with this yellow fabric that I’ve had for years… I bought it secondhand and I think it’s wool but I’m not 100% sure. The lining is cotton flannel and I used some thin leather that my mother in law gifted me for the soles. I also used a thin layer of batting on the lining. They were a bit difficult to turn right side out because of the thickness of the material but they are super comfy! The state of this girls indoor shoes at May half term made me slightly embarrassed - why hadn’t she told me there were holes in the outer fabric?! (Because she actually liked the blue showing through looking like sky!). Suffice to say, when the 5 year old spotted this quilting cotton in @backstitchshop yesterday I resolved to make a new pair. 2 hours later and they were done! The sole of the shoe is made with faux suede and I then put two layers of quilting wadding between the sole and lining so there’s a little cushioning but the shape still lets her feet spread - they where these all day at school when indoors and just put on outdoor shoes for outside playtime. We have a rental inspection tomorrow AND we have been a gastro household from Thursday to yesterday (please be over!) so it was the perfect time for me to make myself a pair of house slippers. In my defence, the girls’ growing rock collections plus allll the dirt from children playing and the little bits of toys and probably my skin is a bit drier now have all added up to my feet getting shredded just by being at home. My middle girl wears as little as possible during winter - is she really my child?! - but she desperately wanted a pair of purple slippers. I used more of some of her favourite purple fabric from my lovely sister-in-law for the outside, corduroy leftover from her Fable dress for a cosy inside, and some towel (leftover from her stay as a 2mo in the Children’s Hospital) for the sole. I was hoping that would help them be not-slippery but, as it turns out, it makes them quite slippery. Now I know. Very pleased that we have returned to a normal spring here with cool nights and the opportunity to make myself a pair of slippers. I have been planning and plotting these for months. Finally I had the energy/ time to make them. They are the #ttwayfarershoes from @twigandtale Made from off cuts of wool and some linen, lined the sole with some batting for softness and warmth. The embroidery purl cotton was thrifted a while back. These shoes are so the perfect scrap busters and a quick sew. I’ve been feeling very low on energy so it was a perfect project to tackle to get back to making again. I have included a little video to see the whole “from pancake to slippers” magic 😉 for your viewing pleasure (video by my Mr 8) I don’t know what this embroidery is called but I have been very inspired by the lovely @petalplum and her stitching. I used a blanket stitch in various sizes to create this….ummm..lichen… spiderweb…doily looking pattern. Really enjoyed the organic feel this took on. I recently made some baby slippers for our neighbors’ baby (see a few posts back). When I showed them to another neighbor, she asked if I would make some for someone who just had a baby boy. She didn’t want anything too flashy. I had this chambray in my stash for the outer fabric, and some mammoth flannel for the lining (see second pic). What’s great about these shoes is that they’re reversible if the hand stitching of the lining closure is done carefully. I used a ladder stitch, and it’s practically invisible. Pattern is Wayfarer Shoes by @twigandtale This is my third pair of the baby size. I’m getting lots of practice before I make my own. It's slipper season! Trying out a different pattern from a new to me pattern designer. These are the children's wayfarer shoes from @twigandtale . They were perfect for using up scraps and came together pretty quickly. They call for 6mm elastic but I only had 9mm but just made the elastic channel a little wider and it was fine. The outer fabric is a @dashwoodstudio cotton from @minervadotcom that little man picked a while ago because he liked the bikes and camping pictures 🚴🏼 Inner is made up of some Sherpa scraps I had. I wanted to make slippers for my daughters for Christmas last year; naturally I ran out of time. Once the weather finally turned colder my older daughter actually started asking me for slippers, so I got round to making these @twigandtale #wayfarershoes I wanted to make them out of felted wool to keep them cosy, and by far the hardest part of the project was finding some secondhand wool to felt. Every time I looked in shops it was always super wash, or with too much synthetic content to felt. So this Summer when we were in England I asked my family if they had any accidentally felted items, and my Gran provided this pink scarf and brown holey socks. They were both perfect with just enough fabric. The linings are also repurposed from a secondhand Liberty shirt and scraps from previous projects. I made the soles from leather deadstock after some targeted advertising on Facebook marketplace sent me and my sister in law to a leather sale in an industrial estate here in Budapest… The only things I really had to buy were the iron on transfers, which I chose for speed over embroidery. I particularly like the butterflies I found for my older daughter which match the colours so well. Frustratingly I bought two then by the time I got home I’d lost one so had to go and buy another! The slippers were a a pretty simple project though quite fiddly, I lost the elastic and had to unpick more than once and I would have found the whole thing frustrating if I were still a beginner. It’s also quite difficult to gauge the size and how tight the elastic needs to be until the end. I made both pairs 2 sizes bigger than their feet as per the instructions for thick fabric, and I would say they fit well but will be outgrown by the end of Winter. When I was halfway through I considered switching the wool and lining but decided to stick with them because of the butterflies / ladybirds. I’m not sure if that was the right choice as the pink ones especially are very soft and fluffy and pilling like mad. They have a layer of wool between the sole and lining for extra warmth / cushioning. Both my daughters initially rejected the slippers then changed their minds quite quickly!

A new pair of slippers for Bob! Bless him, he's been asking for a pair for ages as his 'boob slippers' are looking a little beaten (they are 🐾Merlins go to fetch item when you enter the house!!) The boob slippers are the same pattern but in boob printed fabric😆 . This is the @twigandtale Wayfarer Shoe pattern . My machine had a bit of a struggle with these this time as I had used some pretty hefty fabrics 🙄🤭 . There were A LOT of thick layers to get through. I changed my needle to a Jeans needle, extended the stitch length and reduced the thread tension and sewed really slowly and bless it, we got there in the end!!! I use a @brothersewinguk machine and it's an absolute beaut😍 . 🪡The outer is a canvas cushion cover from @ikeauk 🪡The lining is a 🧶wool blend from inside of an old jacket (it was pretty thick fabric but just looked so cozy☺️) 🪡The sole is some beautiful leather offcut I bought from a lovely makers shop in York before Xmas 🪡Then I have padded the footbed with some foam disable interfacing So LOTS OF THICK LAYERS😆😆 .
