Finished up my #ttpixiehat from @twigandtale for a sewing challenge on bluesky (join uuus). I was inspired by a hat from Hood, but my head is just too big to fit into most hats, so I made my own. One of the nice parts about this hat pattern is that comes with multiple sizes (I went with a size M/L). Plus, the pattern uses a pretty small amount of fabric, so it's a good scrap busting project! I made my version out of 2nd hand wool coating and rayon lining. I removed a bit of length from the back so it sat closer to my head. Inspiration is the theme this month for the @twigandtale story tellers, and most of us agreed that the struggle is more often around a lack of time than of inspiration! So for my niece's 13th birthday (and my nephews 9th a few days later) I knew I needed a project simple enough, not only to make multiple garments, but for my kids to have a hand in the creation of them. Pixie hats were perfect! My 10 year old did all the machine sewing for his cousin, and my 13 year old embellished both her own and her cousins. In the end all the kids had a matching-but-different hat, with hand embellishment and upcycled lining carefully chosen to match each personality. I hope the hats inspire them all to remain true to their own sense of wonder and playfulness but especially the newly minted teenager! When I shared my Twig and Tale Pixie Hat last week I promised close ups of the embroidery. I used #TTEmbroidery pattern, Bunny in Clover, which would be perfect for any upcoming Easter gifts. The pattern comes with brilliantly detailed instructions, indications for which stitch to use and direction of stitching, which makes it ideal for beginners. It also has suggested #DMC thread colours. I changed colours slightly to show up on my mustard blanket and doubled up the thread weight, from 2 strands to 4. I can’t give all the colours I used because a lot were from my Granny’s and Mum’s stashes I inherited. I used a DMC Perle cotton in Size 8 for the pink ear and the clover patch itself. On the other side I used a free #DMCEmbroidery pattern, Hand Stitching. This is a simple outline piece, I used the green #perlecotton from the clover patch to outline the hand, and one of the colours from the bunny for the thread…. dropping it down to the edge of the hat and tying it into the blanket stitch that I’d used around the outside. I’m so pleased with how these #embroideries finished up. With just a couple colours of #embroideryfloss and some perle cotton to add even more texture, my #TTPixieHat feels uniquely me. If you’ve not tried embroidery before, a little project like this is an ideal place to start. I used my projector and a #pilotfrixion pen to transfer the pattern. The #TwigandTale pattern comes with one included, the #DMCpattern needed me to create my own but it was perfectly possible using the technical drawing sheet. I‘m a bit overwhelmed by holiday shopping for my kids (now 3 and 5) right now. Everything is in huge amounts of packaging and not necessarily designed to last. They do have some of those toys, but I wanted to throw something different into the mix. So I made them some slow-sewed stocking stuffers out of scraps I had hanging around (the bunny is even stuffed with the tiniest of fabric scraps). I tried to go for something that ties in with their interests and would have good play value – and I couldn’t resist some matching hats for dress up. All of the patterns are from @twigandtale. For the bunny set, I used the Evergreen Bonnet and Bunny patterns along with the Wildflower and Garden Posie embrodieries. And the doll set uses the Pixie Hat and Pebble Pocket Doll along with the Woodland Alphabet and Toadstool embroideries. When I shared my Twig and Tale Pixie Hat last week I promised close ups of the embroidery. I used #TTEmbroidery pattern, Bunny in Clover, which would be perfect for any upcoming Easter gifts. The pattern comes with brilliantly detailed instructions, indications for which stitch to use and direction of stitching, which makes it ideal for beginners. It also has suggested #DMC thread colours. I changed colours slightly to show up on my mustard blanket and doubled up the thread weight, from 2 strands to 4. I can’t give all the colours I used because a lot were from my Granny’s and Mum’s stashes I inherited. I used a DMC Perle cotton in Size 8 for the pink ear and the clover patch itself. On the other side I used a free #DMCEmbroidery pattern, Hand Stitching. This is a simple outline piece, I used the green #perlecotton from the clover patch to outline the hand, and one of the colours from the bunny for the thread…. dropping it down to the edge of the hat and tying it into the blanket stitch that I’d used around the outside. I’m so pleased with how these #embroideries finished up. With just a couple colours of #embroideryfloss and some perle cotton to add even more texture, my #TTPixieHat feels uniquely me. If you’ve not tried embroidery before, a little project like this is an ideal place to start. I used my projector and a #pilotfrixion pen to transfer the pattern. The #TwigandTale pattern comes with one included, the #DMCpattern needed me to create my own but it was perfectly possible using the technical drawing sheet. Inspiration is the theme this month for the @twigandtale story tellers, and most of us agreed that the struggle is more often around a lack of time than of inspiration! So for my niece's 13th birthday (and my nephews 9th a few days later) I knew I needed a project simple enough, not only to make multiple garments, but for my kids to have a hand in the creation of them. Pixie hats were perfect! My 10 year old did all the machine sewing for his cousin, and my 13 year old embellished both her own and her cousins. In the end all the kids had a matching-but-different hat, with hand embellishment and upcycled lining carefully chosen to match each personality. I hope the hats inspire them all to remain true to their own sense of wonder and playfulness but especially the newly minted teenager! A few weeks ago, I was offered a place in the @twigandtale Storyteller 2025 community. I was delighted! The Pixie hat is my first project. Whenever I find myself lacking inspiration, I try to remind myself why I enjoy sewing in the first place. I was never really into fashion and clothing, but since starting to make my own clothes, I realized that clothing and dressing are as much of a creative expression as any other art form. And I love expressing myself creatively. When I decide to sew something, I ask myself the question ”would a hobbit wear this?”, and if the answer is yes, I make it. I am highly inspired by imaginary worlds, and I like to pretend I’m part of those worlds. Often, I feel more like a whimsical forest creature rather than a human being. And I like to express that with my clothes. Bringing that essence of whimsy into my daily life makes me happy. The pixie hat makes me feel like I’m a tiny creature living in a hollowed out tree. And isn’t that something we’d all like to be sometimes? I made it using boiled wool, using scraps from when I made the Grove Coat. I added a blanket stitch to the edge of the hat for an extra touch of personality. The March Storyteller’s theme is Imagination. The pattern for the hat was gifted to me. Finished up my #ttpixiehat from @twigandtale for a sewing challenge on bluesky (join uuus). I was inspired by a hat from Hood, but my head is just too big to fit into most hats, so I made my own. One of the nice parts about this hat pattern is that comes with multiple sizes (I went with a size M/L). Plus, the pattern uses a pretty small amount of fabric, so it's a good scrap busting project! I made my version out of 2nd hand wool coating and rayon lining. I removed a bit of length from the back so it sat closer to my head.
