I've lost count of the Scout shorts and pants I've made for B over the years, but each and every one never failed to inspire me to try new things. For this one, the chosen cotton fabric has an amount of texture and details, so I thought it would be a good opportunity to try my first traditional quilt block for the pockets, from the colourful scrap stash! Choosing colours always takes the longest for me, but luckily B was eager to help when she saw me with her pencils 😄 She definitely has a better eye than me! 🥰💙 It was all hands on deck (excuse the pun) when she agreed that it would be fun to add her handprints too 😁👋 despite the applique resulting in covering over most of the quilt block 😅😜 The last touch had to be a decorative i-cord bow, to go with the slightly frilly edges (due to a less wide elastic)... thanks to 'Knitting Nancy', who's been waiting for her first use since given by my MIL from her collection a while ago 🤭🎀 I really enjoyed the process of making this quilt block, called the Variable Star, following the blog tutorials by @farmandfolk 🌿 I have long admired Sara's amazing works on IG, and she very timely announced recently that she is doing a free quilt block sampler sew-along on her blog (starting this week!)... which I am super eager about and hopefully can make time to participate in! 🌼🌼🌼 Pattern: Scout pants @twigandtale with bias binding detail to pockets. I probably should have said no to a random bag of scrap jeans. But I didn’t. And then my tall and lanky kid needed pants that wouldn’t fall down so I made him some by upcycling the old pants. He loves bunnies and collecting acorns — I tried to reflect both those things with a bit of embroidery. I consider myself a fairly intermediate sewist but still a confident beginner with embroidery. Celebrate your outdoor adventures by making patches! These cute designs have just been released by @twigandtale #ttadventurepatches . I was invited to be part of the #ttembroidery team and got this pattern early to sew up for the #ttsewandshare . It was a lot of fun and I learned how to do long and short stitch which was new to me! I chose the longest version and made a size 10 (largest size). I had this beautiful handloom cotton from Assam and the border weave needed a pattern that would showcase its beauty. This is another 2024 make that hasn’t been shared here yet. Size 3 Scout shorts for my 2yo, made from a holey pair of my husband’s shorts. The dinosaur material I used for pockets and to patch up the holes. There wasn’t quite enough width for the waistband so I added a bit of purple material at the waistband sides. I intended these to be a spare pair for daycare so I have been pleasantly surprised when she has chosen to wear them over, for example, her fluffy tutu skirt. 🍂🐿️ Autumn Scout Pants 🍁🍄‍🟫 Pants without pockets are not an option 😁 I cut out the pants in Germany to take them to Australia for sewing, so my grandson could choose his woodland character for the pockets, but somehow I lost the waistband in the process🙈 I did not want to look for a matching linen fabric, so we decided to make a soft waistband from ribbing which was already in our stash… my daughter had to finish them for me which she did wonderfully 😉 Pattern: Scout Pants Embroidered: Woodland Squirrel. I feel a bit bad for my 7 year old as I cut out a dungaree dress for her and the used scraps to cut the shorts and made them first!! A fun, fast sew, because my kid outgrew all his PJs. I used @twigandtale Scenic Top for the top, but hacked a Henley placket on the front. I used the 3/4” sleeves for the grey pair and the long sleeves from the Harbour Top for the blue pair. The bottoms are Scout Pants, also from #twigandtale. I'm very pleased to be a storyteller for twig and tale again.this year. Sharing sewing with people and a little of their lives and inspiration is very fulfilling. I'm working on two projects at the moment but progress is slow so I thought I would share this picture of a twig and tale outfit from last year. This months theme to get us creating was imagination and there have been many different interpretations in our discussions. For me imagination is richest in the minds of children and I take great pleasure in helping their imagination take flight. Sewing is just one of the ways to do that, and a good one too. The @twigandtale #tttuipockets put the “fun” in “functional” 😂 of all the options included, the sunset pocket stood out to me. We live in the Canadian prairies, where we get lour 300+ days of sunshine and a proportional amount of beautiful sunsets, so my was to replicate a prairie sunset…lots of pink skies and crops as far as the eye can see 😍. Scraps are a mix of linen, canvas, quilting cotton, and jacquard knit (a cool cloud-like texture!). I added the pockets to the #ttscoutpants , in lava linen from @stitchhappensyqg ✨I was invited to join the twig and tale sew and show team, and recieved this pattern free in exchange for sharing my sew. ✨

Working on some back to school shorts for my youngest - after finishing my first pair of #ttscoutpants I went out and picked up some men’s pants from @secondharvestthrift with this project in mind. Never mind that that was over 2 months ago - school starts in 2 weeks so I have plenty of time to spare 😂

Our newly minted ten year old got a week long birthday celebration which ended yesterday on a quiet note. The highlights included a proper birthday party with fifteen kids, first time ever an ice cream cake, new clothes (more about that below) plus a proper chocolate cake to end the celebrations. As per tradition I made him a new set of shirt and pants— the #schoolbustee by @oliverands and #ttscoutpants from a pattern by @twigandtale . Despite my taking his measurements right before making both garments they are both on the small (and short) side! 😀 I put him in a size 8 as per measurements but I think he is a 10 now. Thankfully both garments fit for now and are not uncomfortable in any way, so I know he will wear them. The T-shirt fabric, with shiny gold stripes as per request is from @sahnifabs in Nehru Place. The pants, a wonderful versatile patterns is in handloom cotton— fabric for both is from left over scraps from other projects. I cannot believe how fast the sewing on the shirt went with my new serger and I really can’t wait to use it more! I do wish both were the correct size but I think I should be just happy that the T-shirt fits. The cake— a super simple, yet utterly delicious chocolate pound cake is from the recipe on @skoranne ‘s stories. I topped it with the burnt caramel sauce (already in the fridge) — an old and trusty @davidlebovitz recipe. Aus den Ferien habe ich noch Bilder von der neuen Sommer-Kombi des Goldjungen mitgebracht. Das Set ist schlicht, aber eben doch mit vielen besonderen Details. Das Kind liebt ja Vögel, also sein Lieblingsvogel auf dem Hemd, aber auch die Hose hat ein Vögelchen bekommen. Die Schnitte für Hemd und Hose sind von @twigandtale mit kleinen Änderungen: ich mag es, mit guten Basics arbeiten und eigene Versionen nähen zu können. So, wie hier das #ttharbourtop beim Oberteil: der Schnitt sitzt super, aber er wird im Nacken mit Knopf geschlossen, das mag der 9Jährige nicht mehr. Also habe ich einfach vorne eine Knopfleiste ergänzt, wenn man das schon mal gemacht hat, ist es keine grosse Sache. Zack- super Schnitt für Grosse. Scout pants with fantastic pockets! My 8 year old helped me to design the sunset patch pockets (I received the Tui pocket pattern as part of the sew and tell in the summer). She is SO happy with the end result! The 8 year old is very slim of leg and also moving into autumn/winter in the UK we decided that having some elastic in the hem would help keep them flapping about and getting muddy as well as keeping her legs warmer! I used 3/4 inch elastic and cut so that it just sat round her ankle rather than being tight. Up until now autumn has been quite mild around here. A few weeks ago we celebrated my son’s baptism. I was sure we would all be wearing jackets, thick fabrics and rain boots, but when summer decided to come back for a final round, I decided to make my son a new outfit. With sunshine all around, my fabric of choice was a light blue/greyish linen I’ve been hoarding for a while, waiting for the perfect project to come along. Linen is usually not the kind of fabric you would expect for mid October in Germany. That's climate change for you. I used the @Twigandtale Pixie Pea Coat (omitting the collar) and the Scout Pants patterns to make his outfit. Of course, all children go through a nature-collecting phase, don't they? Sticks, bugs, flowers, leaves, bones, feathers, shells... and rocks. So many rocks. Rocks in the dryer. Rocks in the cupboard. Rocks in boxes, baskets, bags, and buckets. Rocks tucked away in MY shoes for safekeeping. Rocks big enough to break a toe on under the piano, and pockets overflowing with tiny pea gravel and sand.  My 7 year old daughter built a shed out of pallets in the yard to create a rock museum, and she draws up elaborate tickets and gives them away to anybody who will take one. This is where she teaches "geology class" to her cousins, who are also homeschooled; and she knows more about the fossilized coral specimens of Michigan than most people who have lived here their whole lives. And every day, she brings home more rocks. I would be well within my rights to put my foot down. I find rocks in the bathtub -- and sometimes in my bed! But then I think about the things I loved as a child; things that were not valued by any grown-up in my life. I was drawn to hobbies that made me a mystery to my family and a joke to my friends, so much so that I put them away in shame and embarrassment for decades. Sometimes I wished the weight of it all of it would extinguish my creativity completely, and I could finally be "normal" instead of messy, disorganized, and weird. Twenty years later, not only have those things become one of the greatest gifts I can offer my family... they've led me here to this wonderful, irreplaceable community of makers! So, no, I don't put a stop to the rocks. I just make her bigger pockets.

Connection - My very last Storytellers project, as this year is coming to an end. It felt so bittersweet and special making this dress because this whole year has been filled with lots of sewing and inspiration while being a part of the Storytellers team. The connections we all made will never be forgotten. I decided to make a linen Fable with cuffed sleeves and also use up more of the denim scraps from the scrap exchange. I did the same snail appliqué (I am a bit obsessed) and I will think of this past year every time I wear this dress and all of the beautiful creations I’ve seen from everyone! Twig + Tales community is filled with so many wonderful sewists and it was special to be able to be a part of it this year. I didn’t get nearly as many projects done as I had wanted to, but I feel like it helped me to slow down and create more quality and special garments and try things I never would have tried before. Also spotted is my little photo-bomber wearing a pair of her new Scout Pants.
