I wore them today at Addie’s first ever Girl Scout event, a hike at Talking Waters Gardens in Albany. I’m excited to start a Girl Scout journey with Addie. It was a big part of my childhood. 😊

New shorts for the summer with fabric scraps from other projects vs summer shorts made last summer from scraps from other projects. This really does show so much improvement over a whole year of sewing and while I was seeing it every now and then it’s something else to see it now with two of the same projects created a year apart. Pattern: #coastalcuffedshorts by @twigandtale I added a thicker waistband and my elastic was a little short so I decided to sew it into my waistband for a new look and was pleasantly surprised it worked out. Fabric: washed linen from @blackbirdfabrics and cotton linen from @blackmountainyarnshop

I made the shorts! I’d seen that @urbanselfsufficiencynz sewed up a pair and the last time I went in to buy shorts they told me women weren’t wearing shorts yet 🤨🤷🏻‍♀️ . These are the coastal cuff shorts from @twigandtale. I am a visual learner so the video was awesome to be able to follow. I lengthened the leg and the rise but the chopped a whole lot of the leg again once made up - bit too short as it turns out 🤦🏻‍♀️ but still I like them. . What I love about drafting and making clothes is that no one else will have a pair of these and that I can tweak it and change it for me. The pattern said I was a 20 but really I trimmed back a lot and was probably 16/18 and a size 16 for the leg length. . Yay, my first foray into any kind of 'pants' making! 🖤 As a @twigandtale Storyteller this year, I have the happy pleasure of trying out their patterns and writing about the journey, as well as thinking about their monthly themes. There is a wonderful community of storytellers, sewists of many backgrounds, and it is a constant source of inspiration and encouragement to be part of this community. 😊 These are the #ttcoastalcuffedshorts which I highly recommend, they were a quick and easy sew, and have such a lovely finish, complete with waist ties and pockets! Four pockets, even. I am very proud of my sewing on these #coastalcuffedshorts. I think it’s the neatest I’ve ever done. I took my time and tried to enjoy the process. I did all of the optional top stitching to make the seams more secure and I made a last minute decision to add the back patch pockets. I’m really happy with the outcome. Today I am sharing the other two pairs of shorts that I made out of the new @twigandtale #coastalcuffedshorts pattern as part of the show and share group. These are very comfortable shorts and I have made them out of a number of different fabrics so they are quite versatile too. (see my last post for a patchwork version)The only modification I made was to lengthen them by 2 1/2" . The cream coloured ones are made out of natural linen and the blue are out of hemp fabric. I've been on a sewing roll... I really enjoyed making these @twigandtale Coastal Cuffed Shorts from vintage napkins and a tablecloth I'd found in a Wellington op shop. 🤍 I used denim scraps left over from another project to make the rest! I needed a new pair of shorts but humorously I finished them just as the weather started to get cooler. Looks like they’ll be put away for next summer 😆. Wouldn’t it be a dream to just snap your fingers and your project was instantly done? Sometimes I feel that way especially with a long list of “want-to-makes.” Kids grow too fast, you fall out of love with a fabric, seasons change, and what you wanted to make then becomes obsolete. Even though I dream of getting my to-do list completed instantly I remember that that isn’t the point of hand making your own clothes. There’s joy in the process, in the curating of fabrics, in every little stitch, and in finally being able to wear your creation. So even though these shorts will be put away for the next few months, I can bring them out next summer and have a brand new item of clothing to wear which is always fun. This outfit is summer. I got this gorgeous @atelier_to_naniiro_textile gauze remnant from @fivearrowspei’s moving sale and knew it had to be a Scenic Top. It took some careful pattern Tetris to fit everything on the piece. I was only left with the smallest scraps. I love the colours and the airy feel. I’ve also been jealous of @dietrichfriesen’s grey linen shorts since I made them. I had enough fabric for a pair for me, so made some Coastal Cuffed Shorts. They also sell fabric by meters but it's too tempting not to look at those unique pieces at @mercerialasninas... The cotton pincord of these shorts is from there and I love it! To highlight the waistband (and because I didn't have more fabric) I used a matching leftover scrap from these @nachetz.photo' shorts I made last year's summer. I also added a piping to the edge of the pockets with the same fabric (my first handmade piping!) Once I had added the pocket lining and used it as faux piping, hello rainbows 🌈 that song kept playing over and over in my head. We are finally settling into our house after our last move. Hopefully this is the last one for a very long time. I was able to unpack the sewing machines after about five months of not using them. My next #makenine2024 is finished! That takes me to four so I’m lagging behind a little but have all the patterns printed now and fabric for my two ready to go. These are the @twigandtale #ttcoastalcuffedshorts - I bought the pattern the day they came out because I loved the style. I’m so happy with the finish of them in this black cotton/linen and I used some @libertyfabrics scraps for the ties and pocket lining which feels so luxurious when I put my hands in the spacious pockets! I made the g because my measurements were at the bottom end of that but I’m always worried about things not fitting around thighs and hips. They fit perfectly as intended but I think I’d size down with a second pair as I actually would want them with a little less ease. Though I have made many pieces of clothing for the men in my life, this is the first time one has deigned to model. My husband was a bit apprehensive about showing off on ig so my daughter has graciously joined him in the effort. I was part of the sew and share team for the #ttcoveshorts @twigandtale. Pretty happy with these! I bought the Coastal Cuffed Shorts pattern when it was first released and have been waiting for the right material for them to jump out at me. Husband has discovered that the play offs game of his NFL team is playing tomorrow afternoon on one of the free streaming services here and it’s a public holiday so he can actually watch it even though it’s Monday, so I traded out an afternoon of sewing for getting the kids away from the house all afternoon tomorrow so he can enjoy the game uninterrupted. Did not expect to actually finish these in that time, but here we are! One of the thingsI have been trying to do in MemadevMay is to use the patterns I have for new makes, and if I want something different adapt them rather than buy new. Twig and Tale patterns ate a perfect starting point for adaptations. Each pattern already comes with several options, but it is very easy to use the line drawings to build up the look you want and then turn to the pattern pieces and make your changes. Here Coastal Cuffed Shorts become below the knee shorts. This was a very simple change that just involved lengthening and narrowing the leg pieces. Pleased to be able to have female body shaped shorts but with a longer leg length. These are made in a vintage look washed cotton with African Wax Print cotton inside the pockets and for the cord. #ttcoastalcuffedshorts #ttstorytellers #memademay @twigandtale

Happiness is - all #memadeclothing and a #memade tote bag full of fabric from my favorite Creative reuse store @scrappyelephant ! I am really making an effort to lean into the #ttstorytellers theme for September which is "slow sewing". So today I walked to the store rather than driving (not just because of the theme but also because the weather is incredibly mild and beautiful). I always buy pre-owned fabric, but today I was more judicious in what i bought, as I have a lot of fabric already and even though it was on super discount I still have a houseful already! I bought items with intention to make them into specific things, other than a sweet and rather small piece of chambray with gold dots that i simply loved. ’Are you coming with us?’ I asked my uncle yesterday. ’I don’t know,’ he said, ’depends on where you’re going’. ’To my favourite place on earth!’ I answered. This really is one of my favourite spots, and I was so happy to visit again yesterday now that the snow is gone! Olle cycled there, 11km, and he was very proud 🌟 During april, the #ttstorytellers theme was color, and it made me think about my favourite color. I like earthy tones, rust, green, ocre, but apparently I like brown best, judging my wardrobe! I made a set in towelling fabric for Noah and when that was finished I got a bit jealous, so I made a set for myself as well. The fabric is vintage deadstock from @lusefine 🤎 This is the first time I made a shirt in woven fabric and it is very comfortable! It’s the #ttscenictop and if I make another one I will probably make it a bit higher in the front. I added a button on the back to match Noah. The pants are #ttcoastalcuffedshorts and I added 5 cm to the rise but that wasn’t really nessecary, I think I’ll make another one in linen and cut a straight size 14. I’ll share more photos of my outfit soon 💚 Linus is wearing a #ttbarefootromper and it’s one of the first things I have made for him! Time is just flying by and he is growing so fast, suddenly everything was too small. I hope to make him some more things soon! I've been on a sewing roll... I really enjoyed making these @twigandtale Coastal Cuffed Shorts from vintage napkins and a tablecloth I'd found in a Wellington op shop. 🤍 I used denim scraps left over from another project to make the rest! I love the Twig and Tale patterns, they are so versatile and lend themselves to upcycling and little creative touches. ✨ In the third photo, I've paired the shorts with the @hubbadingpatterns Julia dress as a top. Yay, my first foray into any kind of 'pants' making! 🖤 As a @twigandtale Storyteller this year, I have the happy pleasure of trying out their patterns and writing about the journey, as well as thinking about their monthly themes. There is a wonderful community of storytellers, sewists of many backgrounds, and it is a constant source of inspiration and encouragement to be part of this community. 😊 These are the #ttcoastalcuffedshorts which I highly recommend, they were a quick and easy sew, and have such a lovely finish, complete with waist ties and pockets! Four pockets, even. Aprils theme for the @twigandtale storytellers is colour. What’s your favourite colour? While I was packing my bags for our trip I saw a clear pattern - brown is apparently my favourite colour now. Maybe it’s because my brown hair is getting more and more white, so I have to compensate?
