A fun, fast sew, because my kid outgrew all his PJs. I used @twigandtale Scenic Top for the top, but hacked a Henley placket on the front. I used the 3/4” sleeves for the grey pair and the long sleeves from the Harbour Top for the blue pair. The bottoms are Scout Pants, also from #twigandtale. I may have set a precedent by adding pockets to PJ pants. #TTScoutPants #TTScenicTop #ttHarbourTop

This month's @twigandtale Storytellers theme is 'Work In Progress', and it's been such an interesting topic and insightful way into understanding everyone's sewing practice! What is, after all, a work-in-progress and how can it be used in positive ways to motivate one's sewing? 🌿🌼🌱 I don't usually plan out my sewing much in advance, but as I decided to sew a new top with a stash linen, the theme had prompted me to consider if I could make any additional plan to make the most of the fabric I was about to cut into. The linen is a beautiful, deep purply-brown colour ('port' as hubby calls it) and I would love to be able to make a few cohesive, and still fun, spring/summer garments out of this 1.5m yardage for my fast-growing 6yo. After a loose mapping of pattern tetris, I felt fairly confident about making 3 garments - the first being this Harbour top as part of a set. No room for facings from the main, so a quick search in the scrap box proved resourceful with a good 'matching' colour and bias binding to finish 🤩 The dusty pink facing even inspired some enjoyable hand embroidery in the same colour to the cute neckline 💟 I've absolutely enjoyed making this top with its beautiful design details - the sleeve tabs (any excuse to use some cute buttons!), the side splits and the unique (optional) V-notch neckline. It's the perfect start to this 'WIP' 😉 and I can't wait to share the matching shorts for this set! I don't intend to sew ALL the port-coloured garments at one go (where's the fun in that for a WIP 🤭) but already it feels good knowing that I have, in readiness, more complete garments that I can look forward to sewing in this beautiful fabric! 🎉 Pattern: Harbour Top @twigandtale with modified sleeve length to roll up to short sleeves. This pattern is gifted to me as part of Storytellers - all opinions are my own 🌿 Fabric: Midweight linen 'Maple' @wearethefabricstore 💫 #TwigAndTale #TTHarbourTop #TTStorytellers #SewYourStory

Boys can dress up in cute pioneer clothes too and I am here to prove it. 😍 We had a field trip planned to an Oregon trail era historic area and it was perfect timing because we are currently reading the Little House series (recently finished Farmer Boy). So these boys were excited to dress up and I was happy to oblige! All fabric was from my stash. I really wanted the shirt to be a little more unique than a traditional button up so I went with the @twigandtale #ttharbourtop and I really love it! They’ll definitely wear it anytime. The chambray I had from almost a decade ago wasn’t my favorite color so I tie dyed it with a dark green for the marbled effect. Shorts are freaking adorable and from @northpatterns; the fabric is a Robert Kaufman yarn dyed linen from @raspberrycreekfabrics which I bought in 2020. I was saving it for a TBD “fun project” and I’m glad I did. I asked my buy nothing group if anyone had matching kids straw hats and my neighbor did. It was meant to be! 🥹

Do you see a pattern as what it is, or what it *could be*? 💕 Our creative community never ceases to amaze us with just how inventive they can be. @bomblesandmookin printed the Monarch Wings at a smaller scale, to make the most darling applique for a beautiful Harbour Top for her little one. So pretty! So here's to the pattern hackers, the think-outside-the-box-ers, the sewing dreamers - keep sharing and tagging us in your creative T+T makes, because we love to see them! ✨

Progress has definitely been slow on this slow sewing project. Thanks to covid and some wayward fabric I have only just pulled together the ingredients for my next project - a harbour top for miss mookin. I'm wavering between free motion applique or boro style stitching for the monarch butterfly. I think I'm going to cut out the pieces and have a play with position before committing to anything. At this rate it will be ready in time for Christmas, but there is no deadline, so no pressure so this can remain on the go slow and I'll just work more mindfully. #ttStorytellers #SewYourStory #ttharbourtop #slowsewing #gowiththeflow #ttmonarchwings

The beauty of experiments is that sometimes they don’t work out. I made this @twigandtale Harbour Top and Driftwood Blouse with cotton fabric and thread with plans to experiment with natural dyes. I used beet for the Driftwood and spinach for the Harbour. The other one (blue - I can’t show you the full garment just yet) is red cabbage. The image of the shirts being worn is before dyeing, the other two are after. I found a bunch of instructions that all matched up. I followed all the steps, but made the dye more concentrated than suggested. I let everything sit overnight. The results? Less than what I was expecting. The garments themselves are super sweet. I do plan to dye these again, maybe with a different attempt at natural dye - or possibly with more commercial dye. #ttharbourtop #ttdriftwoodblouse #twigandtale #TTStorytellers #SewYourStory

Olle picked a way too thick fabric for this top and I didn’t think he’d wear it because of that, but he’s actually been wearing it almost daily for the past year! It’s the Harbour Top by @twigandtale that was gifted to me as a part of their sew & show last year. I love the pattern and it has made me feel more excited to sew in non-stretchy fabrics which is great for upcycling! #ttharbourtop

When we release a pattern at T+T, we know it's ready to go with your family on all of life's adventures - because it will have already been on them with ours! Our development process is scheduled slowly with intention, to allow for plenty of time for us to thoroughly "road test" garments on our own everyday adventures. This allows us ample time to ensure that only the most loved designs make it through to become a part of our collection, as the very best they can be. Our Harbour Top came collecting summer strawberries, exploring the seaside, and more, before becoming a part of the T+T collection, and we hope you can feel the warmth of all of those happy memories as you "road test" your own, as well. ❤🍄 (Keen to try Harbour for yourself? The PDF pattern is available in the pattern shop - link in bio.)

What little treasures do your little ones like to give you? 💕 From the tiniest of flowers to hand-drawn masterpieces, to the best rock from an adventure and more, it always feels like a treat to see the things they value so much, and the glee they feel getting to give it to you. Loving this photo from @mother.mending, of her little one offering a sweet little dandelion gift in his Harbour Top!

Happy 100 days of school! This was a collaboration between my darling husband who figured out how to use the Cricut machine and my sewing. There’s 100 soccer balls on this top. I’ve been saving my Flybuys points for a little while, enough to get a cutting machine and heat press. Hubby has some wood projects, I’ve got a few and we know our kids will have ideas. I haven’t quite figured out to work it. This is a @twigandtale Habour top, which is a particularly special pattern for this kid. He wore his first one all the time. It had a Yoda button on the back. Even though he can squeeze into it, it’s much too short. This new soccer themed Harbour will get lots of wear, not just one special day at school. Experiment, parts 2 & 3. Experiments are about learning something new. I’ve learned a lot from this one, including that I have a lot more to learn about dyeing if it’s something I want to get good at. I’m not sure I have the time or capacity for that right now, but I can appreciate the art of it on a new level. These started all white. I posted previously about how my efforts to dye them with vegetables were less than stellar. So I got some Rit (readily available) and dyed them sage green. They came out okay but not super even and with a lot of dark splotches. I think this likely means I didn’t stir it enough, even though I felt like I was doing a lot of stirring! While I was super happy with the patterns and the garment construction, I wasn’t completely sold on the results of the dye, so I decided to continue the experiment, and set the kids up with fabric paint and instructions to paint their own shirts. Not having any rules or expectations of the end result was freeing and they had a blast. Now they can’t wait to wear these garments with a story behind them they had a big part in. #TTStorytellers #twigandtale #ttdriftwoodblouse #ttharbourtop #SewYourStory @twigandtale

I made the #fringedresspattern from @chalkandnotch out of a thrifted fabric 🌿 It’s very comfortable and one of few things that fit at the moment! I’m planning to make one more 🌼 The fabric is unfortunately a little bit too vintage, very soft but also very thin, so it has already ripped in some places.. I’ll have to do some mending! Seeing the one our creative community comes up with is always such fun. @uralba_handmade took the new Harbour Top, added a skirt, and came out with this little upcycled peplum top - just darling! I'm very pleased to be a storyteller for twig and tale again.this year. Sharing sewing with people and a little of their lives and inspiration is very fulfilling. I'm working on two projects at the moment but progress is slow so I thought I would share this picture of a twig and tale outfit from last year. This months theme to get us creating was imagination and there have been many different interpretations in our discussions. For me imagination is richest in the minds of children and I take great pleasure in helping their imagination take flight. Sewing is just one of the ways to do that, and a good one too. Whatever they can see in their minds eye, I can help capture in cloth. This picture brings me great joy. It was an amazing fun mother-daughter day out and a memory I treasure. In case you are wondering she is sporting four t+t patterns. Following my previous post, here is the 2nd of my Storyteller 'WIP's... and with a bit extra! 🤭💝 This was in fact the first garment I was planning when Twig+Tale made the sampling call-out for the newly released Undersea Embroidery collection ⭐🌊🐚 I've made these shorts countless times because they are the comfiest for B (they're designed as elasticated bloomers/pantaloons), and the embroidery has truly brought all the sparks and excitement back into sewing these simple shorts 🥰 I stitched two sets of embroidery - one for each pocket - but ended up choosing just one with the Undersea Garden... I got enamoured stitching the tiny little fish and decided to have a school of them! 🐟🐟 Can I also mention my two new favourite stitches from this collection? The fly stitch, which you have already seen on the Harbour top neckline, and oh my, the whipped backstitch! I used this stitch for the first time on the tiny starfish and the Seashells (pic 4), and it felt like the dark magic of embroidery to me 😂 Maybe a little disappointed that the seashells didn't make it to the shorts, but in the spirit of Storytellers, that shall be another WIP to look forward to 😜😁 The Undersea collection is indeed fun to sew, with delightful textures and colours only limited by your imagination 🌈 I feel as though the sewing stars have aligned for me this month 💫 Thanks so much @twigandtale for the sampling opportunity! Feeling grateful to be part of the wonderful Storytellers community that is always so generous and inspirational with their ideas and perspectives 🙏💖 Pattern: Treeclimber Shorts @twigandtale Embroidery: Undersea Garden (on shorts) and Seashells Embroidery @twigandtale Embroidery patterns are gifted to me as part of the sampling team - all opinions are my own 🌼 #TwigAndTale #TTHarbourTop #TTTreeClimbers #TTEmbroidery #SewYourStory 💫 #Linen #WIP #LinenLover #BluffPatchPocket #Embroidery #UnderTheSea #SeaGarden #Seashells #HandmadeWithLove #LetThemPlay #OneOfAKind #SewingMyKidsWardrobe #IMadeThis #MeMade #MeMadeEveryday #MakeItSewcial #MakeSmthng #SewYourOwn #SewingLove #SewingMama #SewingForKids #SewAllTheThings #SewHappy #SlowSewing #SewistsOfInstagram

My kids are in full blown make-believe mode these days, pretending to be their favourite book or TV show characters. I love that I can sew them costumes that are comfy enough to wear as clothes. My 5-year-old got into the Princess in Black series recently and asked me for a Goat Avenger costume. His little sister immediately requested a Princess in Black costume for herself. I used @twigandtale patterns to make them all. (Note that as a Storyteller I receive patterns in exchange for sharing my honest experience - I’ve made most of these patterns before as part of past projects, but the cape and suspender pants were new to me for this one). For the Goat Avenger, I used the Animal Cape with the giraffe/donkey ears and modified the ossicones to have a pointed end. My kid insisted on burlap for authenticity’s sake. The Harbour Top and Pixie Romper with bar straps completed the look. For the Princess in Black, I used the Traveller Cape and Fernway Culottes. For the top I mashed together the Fable Dress and Scenic Top. I took the Fable bodice and cut the front on the fold (similar to the blog for doing this with the adult version). I added a slit similar to the Scenic or Harbour Top at the back and a flounce and appliqué. I slashed and spread the sleeve to make it puffed. Instead of a full skirt, I used the bottom bit of the Scenic Top to extend it to top length. Friday happens to be “Dress Like Your Favourite Book Character” day at daycare and the kids are super excited to wear these. #TTStorytellers #SewYourStory #TTAnimalCape #TTTraveller Cape #TTFableDress #TTScenicTop #TTHarbourTop #TTPixieEssentials #TTPixieExpansion #TTPixieRomper #twigandtale #twigandtalepatterns #theprincessinblack #princessinblack #thegoatavenger #goatavenger @squeetus @uyenloseordraw

This quickly became a favourite “fancy shirt” in his opinion. He can be picky about how clothes feel so I was uncertain if he would reach for a woven top when he wears primarily t-shirts… well there’s no better compliment than him almost being in tears because he wanted to wear it to his hockey wind up and it was in the wash! ❤️ It was his idea/request that I apply for a “sew & show” to make him a shirt, so when we were selected he got to choose the fabric and button from some fabric recently handed down to us from a family member and he kept me company while cutting and sewing quite a lot of it. He loves bright fabrics and was excited to have something with so many colours. It fits well, and moves SO WELL while playing. Tadah!! It took me ages but every moment was a pleasure and as you can see she is loving it too. This is my first harbour top and she has requested many more to come. Sadly she is modelling size 10, the largest of the childrens sizes so I'm going to be adapting the adult patterns to recreate her dreams before I know it. My smallest small is not so small anymore 😨 It will be emotional to pack away the children's patterns. She was worried grown up patterns will be boring but when you sew your own anything is possible and boring is only sewn when someone insists on it! #twigandtale #ttStorytellers #SewYourStory #ttmonarchwings #ttharbourtop #TTScoutPants #sewingforgirls #applique #boroinspired #prettyinpink
