Me made May Day 20 deserves a special post. Today we celebrated our 12th wedding anniversary. (It’s on the 23rd but we are both busy then!) A lovely Italian meal, Tuscan wine and a beautiful walk on the beach. Through so many moves, kids, a dog, jobs, this guy is forever my constant. This year’s Christmas shirt and dessert 🧵 Chang found this fabric himself when he did a lap around @merchantandmills whilst waiting for me, and asked if I could make a shirt out of it. I used the @twigandtale Breeze Shirt pattern as this fabric is large print and the shirt is one piece for the front and one piece of the back. I’m still not totally convinced by it - it’s pretty out there 🤪 Fabric is a medium indigo dyed cotton and buttons are also from M&M, I think a recycled cotton. The shirt comes together pretty quickly and the only modification was the usual lengthening of sleeves. Breeze Shirt It's incredibly motivating to see how much my partner enjoys wearing the clothes I make for him. His only request is that they be comfortable, and this year, we've committed to incorporating more sustainable fabrics into our wardrobe. We found this stunning, naturally dyed Khadi cotton fabric at our local Khadi store. The charm of handloom fabrics truly shines through in their little imperfections! Here's my take on the #ttbreezeshirt for men. I made it in size 36 with side hem splits and long sleeves, adding my own twist by including a button placket down the front. The inside seams are neatly finished with French seams. This pattern is just fantastic! He loves how comfortable the fit is and has already requested another one, but with short sleeves this time! For #memademay , I'm sharing some random sewing-related photos I normally wouldn't share on my grid. This was last year, but the town I was living in at the time held a Makers Day at the local library. I volunteer hosted a sewing table where kids could choose from about three crafts I offered. Most of the kids chose to make a tiny pillow. I think making something fluffy felt more substantial than the other sewing projects. This appeared to have been the most popular craft at the event, and my table was mobbed by kids. My son, Art, was kind enough to help me make sure kids were finding the supplies they needed, and my husband jumped in at the end, as well, when I needed help in a dire way. I am passionate about kids working more with their hands in the digital age, so I was happy that a lot of kids seemed into this craft. To be honest, I was totally drained after that afternoon and I'm pretty sure I just sat and stared into space like a zombie for the rest of the day. 😵‍💫 😆 Last pic is my friend Leonie @wunderlich882 's daughter's cute pillow made of a scrap of fabric by @artsytoocreations . I had a great time making these pyjamas with cotton flannel from @funkymonkeyfabrics ! The top is a @twigandtale child's Breeze Shirt, and the bottoms are @peekaboopatternshop Pajama Party Pants. The result was even cozy enough to help the recipient sleep through 2 chilly fall nights in a tent. #ttbreezeshirt #twigandtale #pajamapartypants #access : A pair of pyjamas lie on a grey floor. The pyjamas consist of pants and a long sleeved pullover top. The top has a short stand-up collar, and a front closure with three buttons. The fabric appears cozy and warm. It has a light blue background, with clouds, pink/yellow/blue rainbows, suns, and crescent moons in a repeating pattern; each of those elements has a face which is either smiling or sleeping. The buttons are translucent pink to coordinate with the pink in the rainbows. A rectangular white label is sewn into the back of the top, below the collar, which reads "you are so awesome" in purple.

My WIP theme Storytellers project. A Viking-esque Breeze Shirt for my husband. I did this freehand embroidery around the neckline and it’s certainly not perfect but I’m pretty happy with the outcome! This theme was really fun for me. I’m not normally one to set projects down and finish them at a later time (I usually have to finish things the same day I start or the next day 😬) so I don’t ever have multiple WIPs at a time but it was really relaxing to be able to pick it up to work on it when I had a chance instead of rushing. I definitely have plans for more embroidery projects in the future!! I still need to snap some pictures with my camera, but these quick phone pictures will do for now. Pure joy! Last week was spring break for Jack and one day we took a trip to the @militaryaviationmuseum in Virginia Beach. It was completely worth the three hour drive! The number of historic planes here is incredible, and the fact that 90% of them are airworthy still is even more impressive. Jack was in heaven! Oh, make believe, you are a wonderful thing. Even if you are a school assignment. :) Jack's big history assignment was a wax museum project in which he had a research report, and also a project board and costume for wax museum night where he, and his classmates, presented their famous Medieval to Renaissance historical figures. Jack chose St. Alfred the Great, which was fabulous because we had most of what he needed already made from his Frodo costume last year. The one thing we added to the costume were the boots. These are the #tttiebackboots from @twigandtale and he did a lot of the work himself! The video tutorial was very helpful as a guide to lead him through the steps. We used flannel lining, fulled wool for the exterior, and leather on the soles. They came together so beautifully and just made the costume an immense success. I didn’t realize how much summer would affect my sewing practice. During the school year, we manage to maintain a rhythm in our family schedule, but the heat and late nights totally disrupt that. We spend a lot more time than I’d like indoors until the evening comes, and by that point we’re all desperate for the freedom that fresh air brings. Now that both of my babies are older, summer feels more dynamic and fun in ways that it didn’t before. Car rides are no longer as stressful. Pools, libraries, splash pads, evening beach trips, and the aquarium have been our home away from home which means a lot more knitting for me these days. This month’s Twig + Tale Storyteller theme is “Dream”, and I reflect on how much I’ve learned in the past year and a half. I’ve wanted to sew for as long as I can remember, and where I am in my journey feels like just that, a dream. I could also say that most of my sewing time happens at night when my children are dreaming, another perk of these endlessly long days 😅. This is the T+T Breeze shirt #TTBreezeShirt and the #TTCoveShorts in a 42 worn together as a set. The top is cotton chambray and the shorts are a cotton linen blend from Ribes y Casals. The fit guide in both patterns is spot on, and I was able to get a great fit without adjustments despite his measurements falling in different sizes. His shirt is finished with french seams and a bias bound split hem, and he loves it. I made the shorts for his birthday last month, and he wears them all the time. After trying out a bunch of other pattern designers, it’s clear that T+T is in a league of its own. When you know your garment is going to turn out right the first time, there is no feeling like it. It totally makes the late night sews worth it. I was gifted both patterns as a #TTStorytellers , but all opinions are my own. #sewyourstory

I had so much fun designing and making costumes for the two leads in our school's production of Aladdin! Very glad that I managed to come back to visit during the week of the performances and got to see them in action 😍 All the costumes were so great, and the kids put on an incredible show! I tried to combine elements of the iconic outfits from both the original cartoon and the live-action remake. For Jasmine's bodice I used the #vikisews_tally pattern, drafting the overskirt and pants myself. Both of Aladdin's shirts (I made his street rat costume too) are based off the @twigandtale mens breeze shirt pattern. ~ Breeze Shirt ~ My latest Storyteller project was the Breeze shirt - men’s fit which I made for my husband. This was my first time sewing up a men’s garment and I am so pleased with the result. I wish I could say it was a breeze- but honestly it was a bit of a challenge for me. Although I encountered a few hiccups along the way, I really enjoyed and welcomed the challenge. I learned a lot from sewing this one up and I’m glad I gave this pattern a go. This project has definitely been a WIP taking me nearly 3 months to complete. I found myself procrastinating with the initial decision making particularly choosing the size. I’ve found that I’m quite comfortable sewing garments for my littles and myself but a bit intimidated to sew for other adults. Completing this project has given me more confidence to sew other garments for my adult loved ones. Twig and Tale is on a mission to make all of us lovers of slow sewing and beautiful little touches to our handmade garments. I don't know how they are doing with everyone else, but with me, they are succeeding enormously! My husband loves handmade everything, but I have been really bad about making him everyday clothing because menswear scares me. He wants button front shirts,which isn't something T+T does at this point, so I had to use a different pattern. I happened to have the #fibremoodharold hanging around, and while it isn't exactly what I want to make Kevin over and over long term, there is something to be said for trying what one already has. I bought this awesome, 70s vibe cotton a while back on super last chance discount from @joann_stores, and decided to just cut into it and hope for the best. However, even though it is pretty cool fabric already, I wanted to add some special touches, and decided on the #ttbeeembroidery to embellish the collar. I am LOVING how it looks. The Storytellers are capitalizing on Color this month, and choosing threads that stood out against this busy background, while also working with it was a fun challenge. We will see how it all looks once the washable stabilizer comes off. Now to sew it up! Channeling my grief into making this week. Decided to make the kiddos some things. They both asked for fun, floral shirts, and I was happy to oblige. I also picked up the Robin Pullover pattern, and it’s great, and they are loving them. 1. & 4. Robin Pullover made of random knit scraps (pattern @fibremood —I love their kids patterns!) 2. & 3. @twigandtale Breeze shirts (they both complained that I didn’t put in a button loop, so NEXT TIME, I guess I’m reminded that the act of creating and caretaking can be centering, though I’ve been needing to listen to things (@readingglassespodcast & @lovetosew.podcast & @checkyourthread have all been great sewing companions this weekend) to avoid worrying and stressing and raging while sewing. I typically try to work with linen for summer clothing. It's the most comfortable option for our hot, humid summer weather. I realized during this month's "origin" theme, that beyond knowing it comes from flax, I know very little of the history and origins of this wonderful textile. So, while sewing a fresh new #ttbreezeshirt for my partner to wear this summer, I decided to learn more about the linen I use so often. Linen has been used back to around 4,000 B.C. in Egypt and possibly even tens of thousands of years ago in Georgia! I'm Egypt, linen was used not just for clothes, but also for burial shrouds because it symbolized purity for them. The use of linen spread across the Mediterranean and into Europe. Places like France, Belgium, and Ireland became big on linen production. People loved it because it's cool to wear, keeps you fresh, and can soak up moisture really well. It's a sustainable fabric too, needing fewer chemicals and less water to make compared to other fabrics like cotton.
