Outfits of the day today... my shirt is a big 4 paper pattern which is really unusual for me! It's a really fun garment and I hadnt realised how long it had been since made it. Underneath I've got rtw trousers from way back when I was a new mum (eek) and a lavanda top. Its another German pattern and I really like the v-neck with the gathers. The back is a v too, but ungathered. It's a very flattering shape. This top is sleeveless but there is the lavandula which has sleeves and I really should make one. My youngest is such a kind soul who has been helping me with photography and she wanted to join in again too as she loves helping people and things everyone should have handmade, made-for-them clothes. She has on the smallest mens size shore pants from twig and tale and a titchy threads rowan tee that my nephew was very sad to have outgrown. #memademay #memademay2024 #SewnShownSeated #seatedmakeschallenge2024 #ttshorepants #ttshorepantsseated #ttStorytellers #SewYourStory #ttkeapockets #titchythreads #titchythreadsrowantee #titchythreadsrowanteeseated #firlefanz #firlefanzlavadula #lavandulaseated #newlookk6449 #newlookk6449seated @lolieya @thewheeliestitcher

Sewing for tweens + teens, but struggle to find patterns made just for them? As a part of our Size Updates, Twig + Tale patterns now include even more sizes that are specifically designed for youth/tweens, to help bridge the gap between child and adult patterns, so that you can continue to dress your not-so-little ones in T+T garments that are handmade with love. We thought long and hard about how best to package the tween sizing, and how our patterns will provide YOU with the best value. Although many companies offer a standalone tween block, we decided to add the youth/tween sizing, at no extra cost, to our adult size ranges. Come on over to the Twig + Tale blog to learn more about Youth/Tween sizing - link in bio. Then come on back later today, as we've some exciting news to share about the next pattern to include our new adult size ranges! 📸 Beautifully quilted Shore Pants (shortened) by @sashannahartmaker

What does sustainability look like? A life full of light and color. This month the Twig+Tale Storytellers are talking about sustainability. We are only three days in and already a lot of ideas are flowing. When I saw the theme for this month back in February I was very excited because, as anyone who follows me knows, I thrift as much as I can for my quilts. I also participated in @thescrapbin 's sustainability study last summer, saving my fabric scraps that normally would have been trashed and weighing them. In the end they were stuffed into a VERY heavy decorative pillow instead of in the bin. After being in France for just a few weeks I realized that though my fabric itself is sourced sustainably, my sewing practice itself had become unsustainable. I got sick, I had nightmares and strange episodes of heart racing and nearly passing out. All the medical tests came back normal, so I was forced to consider the possibility that I had been pushing myself too hard in lots of areas, sewing included. It had lost its joy. I had to take a break. And I had to reconsider the way I was using my most important ressource - my body. This was a super important message, truly necessary. I have slowed down, but I am enjoying the process so much more. I have made the beautiful items in these photos over the last six weeks. The materials have all been thrifted from stores in the States or here in France (other than the thread and pins which I got from the local fabric shop). They were made sustainably, slowly, stopping when I made errors or when my eyes felt tired. And I love them all so much, especially these new #ttshorepants that I just finished for Jack today. There is nothing so wonderful as clothes made exactly for one's body. He is delighted! #patchworkclothes #patchworkquilt #railroadcrossingquilt #whistlestopquilt #corahalfsleevedress #ttstorytellers #sewyourstory #sustainablesewing #sustainablefabrics #silkstarsquilt #secondhandsewing #secondhandfabric #donatedontdump #starquilt #starblock

Struggling with sewing for your tweens and teens? We've got you! Our updated adult size ranges both now include "tween" sizing - perfect for those "in-between" ages where children's clothing becomes too small, but adult clothing and drafting is still too long. These sizes pick up where our child size range leaves off, and are specially drafted for growing bodies as they make the transition from childhood to adulthood. The Shore Pants include this new sizing, and I'm thrilled - making pants for this boy of mine was easier than ever! What's more, these denim-look linen Shores were even tween-approved. 🎉 Growing up is hard enough - creating the perfect garments for it shouldn't be. I recently got to test @twigandtale shore pants pattern. Talk about a great pair of pants! My son is modeling and finding pants that he really likes is difficult. He's autistic and texture and fit is important when it comes to his comfort. The only step I had to add was stitching down the elastic on the sides so he doesn't have to tie the pants in the front (he gets really frustrated doing that). With a loose and relaxed fit, these #ttshorepants are like pajamas for every day wear.

I got my husband's new shore pants done, he wanted them to be about midcalf in lenght, and wanted one inverted pleat pocket (from the new Kea pockets pack) for his mobile on the back. I think I nailed it 😍 #ttshorepants #ttKeaPockets #sewformen #sewforsummer #twigandtale #skandinaviasyr #sytilmænd

The @twigandtale Storytellers theme for the month of June is "Adapt." There are a lot of ways that I could apply that theme to this past week of sewing for Jack in preparation for camp. I determined when we came home that I needed to make him five pairs of #ttshorepants shorts so that he would have enough things to wear at camp. I didn't want searching for fabric to slow down my process, as five pairs of shorts in a week is plenty of work without going on a hunt for fabric. However, as a quilter I have a lot of fabric that isn't suitable for shorts/pants as it is too lightweight. After a deep dive into the recesses of my fabric stash, including some cabinets I had forgotten about, I discovered a random assortment of fabrics that were the right weight. The ecru colored fabric was probably intended for tableware (a tablecloth or placemats) and is super boring, so I dressed it up by color blocking with some other more interesting pieces I had hanging around, and with a few leftover #hrtblocks from a quilt project. The bright teal fabric is most likely a wool/linen blend, very tough feeling, but with some discoloration from storage. I disguised the discoloration with leftover #hstblocks from another quilt project. Lastly I made a pair of "fancy shorts" from some rayon for wearing to church. They should be nice for super hot days. I even had enough elastic from an old belt for the backs of three of the shorts. I utilized sandal straps for three sets of waist ties as well. Overall, for the whole project I only spent around $5 for the additional elastic I needed. I am so pleased with this project and with the ways I was able to adapt some strange fabrics to become extremely useful items of clothing that will be well-loved. So holidays have infringed on sewing time here 😘, but the upcycle shore pants in a kind of three quarter length have had a work out on the way home today, and he is a happy young man (although a bit shy about photos these days). It was a size 18 pair of ladies linen trousers that fit the 34 mens shoes with relatively little trimming. I took off the waistband, cut the legs apart along the seams, re cut the two fronts and backs with the shore pant pattern with a shorter leg and I reused all of the pockets! Reassembled as per the excellent tutorial and the reused the whole waist complete with drawstring. Winner! I've been using the last bit of leg for and embroidery test too, so no scrap left behind! Btw they are an even leg length but I've noticed he never ever stands straight 😳 #twigandtale #ttStorytellers #SewYourStory #ttshorepants #ttupcyclechallenge #sewingforboys #upcycled #reused #reclaimedfabric #upcycling #tweensewing

He claims not to be a good model. But I think he’s the best. @twigandtale #ttshorepants I got to test this pattern and it was the simplest make with a lovely result. Could be pjs or fancy pants. And honestly I might steal them cause they are perfect scrub pants.

My latest pattern test for @twigandtale was the Shore Pants. These were so quick and easy to make and fit really well - just as well with both maker and wearer sick during this time 😬The fabric is a cotton linen blend which was perfect for this casual style. There’ll definitely be many more Shore Pants to come. As with all Twig and Tale patterns the drafting is perfect and the instructions plentiful and very clear. I changed the opening in the waistband after the test by switching the clever opening in the centre font to the inside. A bit fiddly to do after but will be easy next time, during construction. #twigandtale #twigandtalepatterns #ttshorepants #twigandtaleshorepants #cottonlinenpants #casualpants

Upcyling project for the books! Back before we left for France I bought Jack a few pairs of pants on eBay. Two of them were great, but one, not so much. When @twigandtale announced their #ttupcyclechallenge for April I decided that I would repurpose the pants into a pair of #ttshorepants in shorts length, since Jack was so pleased with his first pair. I definitely was in for more work than I realized. As I took apart the pants I discovered that they had been dyed after they were put together, so there were places in the seams where the dye had not gotten into the fabric. Also, the shape of the pieces once I had ripped out all the original seams were very different from the Shore pattern pieces. I realized I would have to use other fabric that I had around to make the pieces large enough. I went with the left over bright yellow cotton from a curtain I had thrifted for a couple of projects last month. I was worried that it might look a little too much like Jack was wearing a can of peas and corn, and so decided to make this whale applique in a beautiful blue fabric gifted to me my my dear friend, @tessellate_textiles . In the end I also used it for the waistband, as the original waistband was in rough shape, and the rest of the shorts looked so good that I couldn't stand the thought of an ugly waistband. I learned a lot from this project. It was particularly eye-opening to see the difference in the pattern piece shapes. I got to see exactly why RTW clothes don't fit Jack well. It made me feel justified for all the tears and frustration when we go shopping together. I am so happy that Jack now has two new pairs of shorts that he loves and that make him feel great when he wears them. #upcycledclothing #earthmonth #sustainablesewing #slowsewing #intentionalsewing #ttstorytellers #sewyourstory #twigandtale #applique #fiberart #patchworkclothing #quiltersofinstagram #sewistsofinstagram #thriftedfabric #thrifted #repurposedfabric

What is the difference between inspiration and desperation? Have you had the conundrum about your maker feelings before? You see someone's post on Instagram, or the latest quilt magazine shows up in your library app, or your Pinterest search pops up a rabbit trail of ideas that make you question all the things you are currently making and sure that the one thing you "should" be making is not currently on your list. Because I am overseas, and I have a sewing machine with more limits than my machines at home and whatever I make here I have to find some way of shipping home I have to parse out those inspiration vs. desperation feelings. Yesterday four new quilt magazines popped up in my library app and I felt so excited to make a new quilt top, but I can't quilt it here if I make it. So how can I use that excitement as inspiration to make something that satisfies my itch to quilt while being a reasonable make for the place I am at this moment? I decided to pull out a pattern I already own #silkstarsquilt by @tessellate_textiles and scale down the blocks to 12", which is a great size to put on clothing. Jack needs shorts as he has grown out of every pair he owns, so I am planning a pair of #ttshorepants for him with this cheerful star on one leg. I can take my inspiration for quilting and make something useful of it, rather than feeling desperation because of the limitations placed on my craft at this time. Also, I avoid going home with yet another WIP to add to the pile! #sewyourstory #ttstorytellers #starquilt #starblock #thriftedfabric #upcycledfabric #emmausfinds #emmausbeaune #sewingoverseas #intentional #intentionalsewing #hsts #inspiration #inspiredbyquilts #quiltspiration #twigandtale

I have been super quiet because the past two weeks have been completely overwhelming for our family. Back when we were in France we had determined to sell our place in the country so as to simplify our lives, but only a few weeks ago did we decide that we needed to do it NOW. So the preparation of the house was a thing a couple weeks back - an exhausting thing. We also made the very difficult decision to put Jack in private school. It was so emotional for me and for him. For Kevin it was less emotional and simply made sense. Thankfully the whole process has been made much smoother by us finding a wonderful, very small elementary school just two miles from our house. It is such a comfortable space, with really excellent academics and devoted and kind teachers. Jack is doing well already, and I like the idea of more space in my day, though to be honest I haven't really gotten to take advantage of it yet, as there is so much to do when putting a child in school! Last night Kevin went to a lecture, so Jack and I took a picnic to the hill (as we call it) after homework was done, and he showed me what he had learned on the recorder (Hot Cross Buns anyone 😂). It was good, refreshing, and reminded me of all the things I love about being together. Sorry, that was a lot of personal. Just feel like life is a lot right now, but I am excited for this new chapter. The quilt we used for our picnic was a 99 cent steal from Goodwill and I love it! Hubby has been asking for some new garments now that I've made a couple of shirts for him (also because he would avoid any form of shopping possible 😏). He doesn't have a big wardrobe, but what he does have is a small pile of clothing from old office days which he doesn't wear anymore. I recently picked an old shirt from this pile, considering what I could make for B, when he pulled out *three* more shirts from his current wardrobe that he had not been wearing for years 😌🌱 Of course I decided to make him a pair of shorts, as you do 🤪🙈😂 This was a bit of an adventure for me, as I had only attempted upcycling on tried-and-true patterns and relatively small children's clothing previously. I ended up cutting three of the four shirts, with some leftover fabrics that I think I may be able to make into a woven T-shirt later!🤞🏻 All the cotton fabric was fairly lightweight, so I decided to do flat-felled seams on all the patchwork for strength (and seeing some beautiful bojagi-inspired makes recently). I am now absolutely in love with this beautiful seam finish, both inside and out! 😍 It was fun to make some 'features' of the upcycle too - an existing chest pocket in the perfect spot, salvaging the button placket for precious usable fabric and some simple embroidery to cover up the old button marks. I also found some perfect cotton twill scraps for the waistband and pockets, that I took some extra time to piece to make it work 🙂🌿 There was definitely a lot of 'ummm's and 'hmmm's along the way, but I am glad that it has all come together well - and most importantly, the recipient is very happy with both fit and look 🥳🎉 (I hope to do a little snippet of the process on my story/highlights for those interested 😉) Grateful to @twigandtale for another wonderful, easy-to-follow pattern (pattern is gifted on request as part of Storytellers') and their super-inspiring #TTUpcycleChallenge this month, which partly spurred this make! 💪🏻💕 Using secondhand textiles in my mind always takes more time and resourcefulness, on top of the motivation to sew your own, so it has been both humbling and amazing to see what others have done and can do! ✨✨✨

Release sale pricing ends today + why we love linen ❤ It's no secret that linen is one of our favourite fabrics at Twig + Tale! The Shore Pants can be made in a number of different fabrics - chambray, twill, or lightweight denim for example - but for that relaxed, beachy vibe, we really had linen in mind when designing them. Here are some of the things we love about linen: -The "rustic elegant" look of linen combines beautiful texture with great drape, making it ideal for garment sewing. -Linen is a durable fabric that softens with age and has a beautiful "lived in" look (we like to embrace the wrinkles!). -The breathable nature of linen fabric makes it ideal for summer clothing - keep the sun off skin while staying cool. -One of the most sustainable fibres for fabric production, flax requires far less irrigation than cotton, and can often be grown without pesticides. Have you tried sewing with linen? It has become more accessible in recent years, and is often available in an array of inspiring colours. We highly recommend giving it a try, for Shore Pants, or many other projects! @susanne_holm_ did, crafting both these Shore Pants and Breeze Shirt from it. Here at Twig + Tale, we create PDF sewing patterns your family will love. We know, because they are the patterns our own families love! You won't find the trendy, here-today-gone-tomorrow styles of many other designers. No, the pace is a bit slower around here - and we like it that way. This slower pace allows us the opportunity to road-test these classic garments over a longer period of time, so that only the most worn and loved favorites make it into the T+T lineup. From their very beginning, some patterns will have seen years of wear and development before making it to you - really! This way, we can ensure they are just right before you entrust your time and materials to making them. Haven't tried a Twig + Tale pattern yet? We've received a number of questions about Shore Pants for women - and we'd love to get those answered for you! The Shore Pants were drafted based on our Men's/Straight Fit pattern block, and thus are made to fit on masculine-shaped bodies. That said, @pennythephysio from our Sew + Show team made a pair for herself, and loves them, too! She likens the fit to a unisex pair of scrub pants. So whether or not they will work well for you or the women you sew for, is all a matter of fit preference. However, we're pleased to announce that we will be releasing a new Women's/Curved Fit pattern for shorts in the upcoming weeks - with many similar features to the Shore Pants, but made to fit feminine bodies, they may be just the thing you are looking for. So whether you would prefer the fit of the Shore Pants, or something a bit different, we've got you covered. The Shore Pants PDF pattern is available in the pattern shop now - link in bio. Or, stay close, because we will be sharing more news about the Women's/Curved Fit shorts soon!

Happy to be a ‘Sew and Show’ person for @twigandtale ‘s new pattern: Shore Pants for men. #ttshorepants They have a flat front and elasticated back and Chang says they feel like fancy scrubs. I used a medium weight @mindthemaker organic cotton twill in Chang’s favorite color. The pattern is very easy (suitable for beginners) and the instructions are excellent as always. The fit pretty baggy - I guess this is the point but I’m not used to seeing Chang wear this style. Next time I would do a flat seat adjustment and probably size down. I had trouble with the waistband and elastic sizing being way too big; I actually took them in more after this photo. Chang says they are very comfortable though, and likes the deep pockets.

I'm getting geared up for the @twigandtale upcycling challenge. I love repurposing things I have either been given or rescued from a charity shop (thrift shop). I never throw anything away so here I have three quarters of a pair of linen trousers (the other part made a baby gift years ago 🤣). They are being transformed into shore pants shorts for my fast growing tween. Hearing about the upcycling event made me revisit all those things I've been keeping just in case and there were some forgotten treasures in there. Some are now in the to-sew pile, others I'm still scratching my head over. It turned out the trouser into shorts transformation was a quick sew. I could reuse the pockets and even the waist band! , plus someone else has done the hard work of breaking the linen in and making it super soft. A real win win! #twigandtale #ttStorytellers #SewYourStory #upcycling #ttshorepants #linen #minimumwastesewing

It had been a month since I picked up my camera, so when Jack and I went out searching for wineberries this evening I grabbed it as we went out the door. Here are the #TTShorePants from @twigandtale I made for my husband during testing. When the T+T call came for the tryouts, I immediately knew I wanted to try these. We have been looking for a nice Inbetween pants pattern for a while now and these fit the bill perfectly. On daily basis he wears regular fit jeans and in his off days he mostly wears trekking pants, these pants will fit right inbetween, for when you need something else, something nice, relaxed but also a little bit fancier than trekkingpants . The fit is perfect, sizing placed him right on the size 38 so we made that size and didn't alter them in anyway. The fabic is a cotton pants fabric and gave them a nice crisp feel. I can't wait to try this for him in a linnen or a linnen blend, but first some nicer weather because it's been cold and snowing and these are not made for cold or snow. #twigandtale #twigandtalepatterns #madewithlove #ilovetosew #imademyclothes @macgyverew
