Babywearing is getting more infrequent these days — especially with the big kid. But sometimes even a four year old just needs to be held. It doesn’t make sense for me to put time into babywearing specific clothes. When I saw the Overland Cloak design from @twigandtale, one of of my thoughts was that it would be perfect with or without a kid being worn, no alterations needed. I was right. This is made from a worsted wool I thrifted ages ago and a cotton lining. I made the knee length version in size 1 (I’m usually a size E in Twig and Tale’s patterns) and it’s perfect. I love how the pattern came together. This would be a great sew to get into outerwear making. And yes, it has pockets. The wrap is handwoven by @seawaterweaving. Overland cloak. Ceux qui me connaissent savent à quel point j'adore porter des capes. Bien plus que des manteaux, j'en ai d'ailleurs une belle collection. Cette cape, dernier patron de @twigandtale est pourtant la toute première que je couds et je l'aime à la folie. Rien que ça, oui ! Point de vue couture, c'est un régal. Tout est intuitif et très bien expliqué. Le livret est très complet et m'a largement suffit pour coudre ma cape mais pour les plus frileux, une vidéo de montage est également disponible. Cette cape offre plusieurs versions. Deux longueurs sont proposées, j'ai choisi la plus courte. On peut également opter pour une capuche arrondie (ce que j'ai fait) ou bien pointue. Pour les finitions, on a le choix d'une finition sans doublure finie au biais, une doublure courte ou complète. J'ai évidemment choisi la doublure intégrale et je me suis tellement appliquée que je crois que c'est la première fois que mon côté maniaco-maniaque de la finition est pleinement satisfait sans le moindre détail qui me déplaît et auquel je vais penser en boucle. 😬 Cette cape a une ampleur folle, de grandes poches intérieures intégrées à la doublure et se ferme par deux boutons sur le haut, il n'y a donc aucune entrave aux mouvements comme ça arrive souvent avec les capes complètement fermées à l'avant. C'est beau mais ce n'est pas pratique ! Bref ! Back in the day I made myself a cloak, oh how I loved the drama of it and I wore it all through the Autumn and Winter. Then next year the new thing was maxi coats, so I made one of those and discarded my cloak with the callowness of youth. Oh how I have lamented the loss of that make over the years! So when Twig and Tale announced the Sew and Show for their new cloak I signed up in a heartbeat. An Overland Cloak has been on my wish list for a long time. I remember when it was released and seeing all these amazing cloaks, but knowing that it was a project that I did not have the time to invest in yet. I’ve had this pattern in my account for a little while now, just waiting for the right moment. My cousin sent us a wedding invitation early in the year for a September wedding and I’ve been aspiring to make my dress all year, and sew an Overland Cloak in case it was chilly. For my cloak, I ordered twill suiting in Moroccan blue, with olive satin for the lining. I washed it all and got to work on my dress, suitable for a black tie wedding. Life got a bit busy for us- sick kids at various times, someone on crutches, kids that like to wake up before 5am…and with a week to go until the wedding, I didn’t have a cloak! The projector file had these clever little star markers which helped me cut the really long pieces. It came together very quickly once cut out, although I didn’t have time to hang my cloak pieces up before sewing together as recommended in the pattern. One of the buttonholes is a little wonky. My machine had a conniption midway through sewing that. The wedding was absolutely beautiful, the weather was a little chilly, with sprinkles of rain at various times, but the sun was bright during the actual ceremony. I’m so glad that I had my cloak, it was an elegant way to add some warmth and I’m looking forward to wearing with jeans or dresses in the everyday. Overland was one of those patterns that just captured my heart and imagination and I’ve loved seeing it come off my wish list and become a reality. 🌟 Quilting Journey Update 🌟 At the beginning of June, I embarked on what I thought would be my next quilted vest, inspired by @SunbeamFabricArt's YouTube video, "TAME YOUR SCRAPS!" 🧵✨ Captivated by the possibilities, I dove into joining my crumbs, scraps, and fat quarters to create fabric. Before I knew it, I had more fabric than needed for a vest, and my loved ones encouraged me to consider making a coat instead. However, decision paralysis struck: which pattern to choose? 🤔 I’d used up most of the material in my chosen colour palette, leaving only crumbs. So, I set it aside for a while (read: 2 months). Now, as I’m home sick, I decided to revisit the project and found fresh inspiration. @ShannonMakes’ video on Bilbo's Patchwork Housecoat from The Hobbit—One Robe To Rule Them All—was absolutely stunning! 🌟 This led me to @thesewloartist and her amazing, twirl-worthy coat. From there, I discovered the pattern #M7875, which I've just ordered. I also found @cosplaycyanide’s incredible journey in making a coat that leaves the house! 📸✨ Her modifications—button closure and three-quarter sleeves—make it perfect for adventures. I was initially unsure if the pattern would be suitable for more than just a dressing gown. Now, I need to figure out how to use the three meters of fabric I’ve made and extend it to 5-6 meters by merging it with other fabrics. I’m thinking I might need to separate some of the fabric I’ve already pieced together to mix in new fabrics for better cohesion. Since I’ve been using an improv quilting style and haven’t made blocks, just gone with the flow, I need to contemplate my next steps. If you have any suggestions, let me know! I’m also need to get started on a belated birthday present, the #TTOverlandCloak. We picked a lovely wine velvet, but I know she adores @katherine_everything’s checked patchwork creation. I’ve been collecting men’s shirts to possibly make it reversible, with one side checked patchwork and the other side velvet. I borrowed my daughter's recently-completed @twigandtale Overland Cloak for a walk and photos the other day, and am now convinced that I was born in the wrong century. He happily requested a Hobbit style cloak so he could live his best Tolkien life going for walks through the forest and imagining life in Middle Earth. I'm kicking off the 2025 storyteller season by getting underway with a marathon of a project.... a cloak that will tell the story of fenland peat and the wild landscape we hope to build as part of my work. #HandmadeHalloween 👨‍👩‍👦 I know I can’t get away with “family costumes” forever so I’m making the most of it! ♟️ This year we were “chess” - well some of the board. My boys are knights and I’m the queen, obvi 👸 🪡 The costumes were all from secondhand fabric - the red was an IKEA fleece blanket, my cape is an old wool blanket + a royal purple duvet cover for the lining, and the grey and white some old sheets. My crown is from an old garment which was full of holes! 🖤 I wanted black for my husbands cape, but dying a white sheet gave me that grey and close enough! I was more committed to not buying virgin fabric than to “authenticity”. (Shout out to @checkyourthread!) 🪡 Patterns: I used the #TToverlandcloak for the big cloaks, and the for the little guy, the #TTtravellercape (with the knight-hack instructions on the blog), both from @twigandtale 👑 My crown is a #freepattern from @wavesandwild. I was a little worried it’d look… cartoonish? But it was perfect. ♻️ I’m hoping all these costumes can be reworn. I’m wearing my cape to work this evening - gonna string a ring on a necklace and call myself a hobbit. Sorted!

Oh, make believe, you are a wonderful thing. Even if you are a school assignment. :) Jack's big history assignment was a wax museum project in which he had a research report, and also a project board and costume for wax museum night where he, and his classmates, presented their famous Medieval to Renaissance historical figures. Jack chose St. Alfred the Great, which was fabulous because we had most of what he needed already made from his Frodo costume last year. The one thing we added to the costume were the boots. These are the #tttiebackboots from @twigandtale and he did a lot of the work himself! The video tutorial was very helpful as a guide to lead him through the steps. We used flannel lining, fulled wool for the exterior, and leather on the soles. They came together so beautifully and just made the costume an immense success. Overland cloak. Ceux qui me connaissent savent à quel point j'adore porter des capes. Bien plus que des manteaux, j'en ai d'ailleurs une belle collection. Cette cape, dernier patron de @twigandtale est pourtant la toute première que je couds et je l'aime à la folie. Rien que ça, oui ! Point de vue couture, c'est un régal. Tout est intuitif et très bien expliqué. Le livret est très complet et m'a largement suffit pour coudre ma cape mais pour les plus frileux, une vidéo de montage est également disponible. Cette cape offre plusieurs versions. Deux longueurs sont proposées, j'ai choisi la plus courte. On peut également opter pour une capuche arrondie (ce que j'ai fait) ou bien pointue. Pour les finitions, on a le choix d'une finition sans doublure finie au biais, une doublure courte ou complète. J'ai évidemment choisi la doublure intégrale et je me suis tellement appliquée que je crois que c'est la première fois que mon côté maniaco-maniaque de la finition est pleinement satisfait sans le moindre détail qui me déplaît et auquel je vais penser en boucle. 😬 Cette cape a une ampleur folle, de grandes poches intérieures intégrées à la doublure et se ferme par deux boutons sur le haut, il n'y a donc aucune entrave aux mouvements comme ça arrive souvent avec les capes complètement fermées à l'avant. C'est beau mais ce n'est pas pratique ! Bref ! The @twigandtale #ttoverlandcloak was made in @fabricfindersinc green chambray and lined with a peacock feather quilting cotton from @northcottfabric. I love how this pattern has options for different lengths and a half or full lining. This chambray is light, so it will work wonderfully for keeping the sun off during long days at the Renaissance Fair, and it’ll go with my new garb I’ve been planning. I paired the cloak with my beloved #charmpatterns #carouseldress by @gertie18. I am so excited to be part of the @twigandtale Storytellers team for 2025! Our first project theme is Imagination. For me, sewing sparks my imagination in so many ways, my general view is that if something is made of fabric, it can made into nearly anything! I get the majority of my fabrics from thrift stores, and I sometimes come across items I can't bear to leave behind! One example was a vintage net curtain. I just kept imagining all of the neat things it could become. It just pulled me in, and for $2, I couldn't say no! My initial plan was to use part of it to add to the waistband of a Meadow Skirt, but then my imagination sparked, and I wondered if I would have enough to make an Overland Cloak as well. To add the detail to the Meadow waistband, I just cut an extra front piece and treated it as one piece during construction. The Overland Cloak is unlined, and I'm a sucker for French seams, so it is sewn together using French seams to give the inside a finished look. I also chose to use the front facing pieces of the lining to help stabilize the front, and hemmed the raw edges. Babywearing is getting more infrequent these days — especially with the big kid. But sometimes even a four year old just needs to be held. It doesn’t make sense for me to put time into babywearing specific clothes. When I saw the Overland Cloak design from @twigandtale, one of of my thoughts was that it would be perfect with or without a kid being worn, no alterations needed. I was right. This is made from a worsted wool I thrifted ages ago and a cotton lining. I made the knee length version in size 1 (I’m usually a size E in Twig and Tale’s patterns) and it’s perfect. I love how the pattern came together. This would be a great sew to get into outerwear making. And yes, it has pockets. The wrap is handwoven by @seawaterweaving. Does the Overland cloak work in double gauze? Absolutely! Made in a beautiful soft almost clay pink slub gauze and lined in a rust cotton poplin. In my head I am a sun loving creature but in reality I’m as sensitive to the sun as a vampire. So this cloak is perfect for a summery sun cover! Because sun cream feels ick and hats like to be anywhere but my head.
