For the coldest days of winter, I understand why a plastic coat with down filling or similar is necessary, but the truth is that I hate wearing them. I hate the noises they make and how the plastic feels on my neck if I'm not wearing a scarf. I decided to try to make the warmest coat I could make out of mostly natural fibers. The green layer is cotton denim and there is a boiled wool interlining. I've found that I can wear this above 40F/4.5C. It's recently warmed up to this temperature range, so I'm happy I could transition to this coat! The ribbed cuffs were once a sweater that I thrifted, and the fuzzy hood lining was once a thrifted bathrobe. The adorable body lining was once a cotton sheet that I got from my very impressive and clever local friend who owns the awesome company @rookiehumans. This coat was a challenging sew and it's wearable although far from perfect. I added those little front tabs because I had installed the snaps too far away from the placket and the tab idea saved it from being a disaster! Thanks to my kid, Art, for the photos! Pattern: Twig & Tale Pixie Coat with changes to the hood design, the pockets, and the cuffs. Added front snap tabs, increased length. @twigandtale #ttpixiecoat #pixiecoat Fabric: Main: @cousette Grass Green Soft Cotton Denim purchased from @lamazifabrics Lining: Bedsheet from @rookiehumans #iusedtobeacurtain #njsews #sewingouterwear #modernsewing #modernsewist #millenialsewing #millenialsewist #handmadewardrobe

#twigandtaleinthewild #pixiecoat #ttpixiecoat My wool Pixie Coat is keeping me cozy on this 20 degree F day! There’s even room for my wool Pathfinder Vest underneath! Two hoods! One of my avocado pit buttons broke while on this extended trip away from home, so I had to buy replacements. Love my @twigandtalepatterns

Hi everyone and happy new year!! I did not do a great job of posting in 2024, mostly due to moving yet again, and I miss my exchanges with everyone here. While I cannot promise to be better in 2025, I decided to make a leap and post something today. I moved to a wonderful town with many people who have jobs in the arts and others who do crafting on the side. I still haven't met anyone locally who sews clothes as seriously as I do, so you, my IG friends, fill a special gap in my life! Here's a new funky coat I made using fabric gifted to me by a woman whose father worked for Vera Neumann back in the 60s or 70s. I have mentioned this amazing gift before. There was a panel that looked like it was supposed to be used to make a cute mod dress. The fabric is a dreadful polyester that I did not want touching my skin even though I loved the print. So I decided to make a coat, and the Twig & Tale Pixie Coat pattern worked perfectly with it. I added some coordinating fabric to fill out the sleeves, and it is lined in a quilted material I bought at FabricLand during a trip to Canada. It's very lightweight and pretty warm! Making it gave me confidence about tackling more outerwear in the future! Thanks to my kiddo, Art, for taking most of the photos! (He's out of practice 😜) Pattern: Twig & Tale Pixie Coat Women's/Curvy Fit with multiple modifications (tabs added to placket, opening of hood was decreased, collar shape was modified, welt pockets added) @twigandtale #ttpixiecoat #pixiecoat Fabric: Vera Neumann vintage fabric (main fabric) / Minerva Core Range Medium Water Resistant Fabric (sleeves) / Quilted fabric from FabricLand in Toronto #veraneumann @minervadotcom #minervamaker #minervamakers @fabricland.canada #iusedtobeacurtain #vintagefabric #70sfabric #vintagetextiles #njsews #sewingouterwear #modernsewing #modernsewist

Earlier this year I set out to make a @twigandtale #ttpixiecoat #pixiecoat for my daughter with this beautiful purple cotton coordoroy and Dashwood poplin from @ginertea.es ❤ I prepped the pattern, bought just enough fabric, but I never got around to actually making it. Last week I decided it was time only to realize that she had grown two sizes! I managed to squeeze out a straight 6 by piecing together the sleeve and button placket. The hood fits when her hair is in a ponytail, but I'll have to make a bigger one in the future because she's got a lot of volume. This month's Storyteller Theme is Texture and I think this cozy jacket fits the bill. It's so nice to the touch! She chose heart-shaped snap buttons to match, and it adds the perfect amount of cuteness. It was my first time using snaps, and I'm hooked. It's raining a lot and I'm already envisioning another Pixie with a warm sherpa lining and waterproof outer. We'll see! *I bought this pattern and love it very much! All opinions are are my own.* #twigandtale #ttstorytellers #ttstoryteller2024

It's been a while! 💚 The year has zoomed by and I feel I have barely scratched the surface of what @twigandtale has to offer 😢 As a T+T Storyteller this year, The Pixie coat was definitely on my list and I had this tactile, forest green babycord earmarked for it. Perfect for October's theme ✨️Textures ✨️ Whilst I do enjoy the sun and occasional warmer temperatures here I don't think I have a favourite season because each one brings something different and we're lucky to mostly experience all four in the UK. The seasonal rotation is a chance to say hi again to previous makes and add new ones to the collection. A wonderful time! I sized up on the coat so I can wear more of my handknits underneath and of course I had to add a pop of colour with a fun lining. This is becoming a bit of a signature move, I love to add something unexpected ☺️ the Kea scallop pockets and my leaf satchel paired so well with this! A trouble-free relaxing sew, the minute I flipped it inside out I could not believe I'd made a proper coat! I used a strip of the selvedge for the hanging loop and handstitched the lining in place. The buttons were found in my local charity shop, salvaged from a camel wool coat. No doubt it has stories of its own as well 🍂🍃 *Coat pattern was gifted* Needlecord outer is from my fabric stash and lining is The artists home - Sallie ann @libertyfabrics #twigandtale #ttpixiecoat #memadeeveryday #autumnsewing #petitesewing #corduroy #pfaffuk #pfaffliberty #sewistsofinstagram #ttleafsatchel #TTstorytellers

Today I’m sharing what is maybe my favourite @twigandtale Storyteller make so far - a vintage-inspired coat! :) This is the classic Pixie coat pattern with the Peter Pan collar add-on. It was very straightforward to put together, and again I would really recommend this pattern if you are new to making coats or outerwear - the instructions are thorough and very gentle. Notes on this make: - I decided to use my main fabric for both the outer and under collar pieces (the pattern tells you to use lining for the under), which looks fab but did mean that the collar had to be pressed a lot to sit nicely as it was bulky. For added security, I hand-tacked it down at the collar points and the back, and now it is sitting perfectly! - I used a deadstock viscose to line it, with a mock-blockprint pattern on it. It looks lovely but was probably the wrong choice for lining - it has a very open weave and it has dropped further even though I left it to hang for a day or so before I joined the outer to the lining. The weight of it is pulling at the hem a little bit, although not too badly. - I wanted to lean into the whole Peter Pan collar vintage-inspired look, so I went for covered buttons, which were new to me. They were surprisingly easy to do. My machine couldn’t make corresponding buttonholes big enough, so I have opted for snaps under each button instead - which works very nicely! This was a great project for thinking about our theme for this month: transitions. It marks the start of my Autumn/Winter sewing for this year, and has got me really excited for cooler weather when it arrives, as I cannot wait to wear this! ✨ Outer fabric - wool mix coating by @atelierjupe ✨ Lining fabric - deadstock green viscose from @rainbowfabrickilburn ✨ Pattern - #ttpixiecoat with Peter Pan collar add-on. I wanted to show a few more details of my @twigandtale raincoat. It has a little coat hook to make hanging up an option in my laundry, which is great for drying. I used this beautiful @dizzydaisyfabric for both the hood and the main lining. When I’m wearing my coat, you can see a little of the dotted fabric on the hood but I didn’t have enough for the whole coat. I figured it adds to my story! Softshell is from @fabricbymissyrose. Pattern: @twigandtale pixie coat and Kea pockets. #ttpixiecoat #ttkea #ttstorytellers

The first @twigandtale Storyteller theme has been Stories. Once I became a “school mum”, I realised that a raincoat would make life easier for me. It rained for about three weeks straight during that first term of kindergarten. As a relatively new sewist, I ordered softshell with every intention of sewing my raincoat. I couldn’t find the right pattern, I was scared of ruining my costly fabric, I was time and sleep deprived. The raincoat became a shelved project. The story didn’t end there. I’ve been intentionally making steps towards my raincoat since the Christmas holidays. The need for raincoat ownership becoming more apparent. I used the Pixie Coat as a base, but as I want to carry two school bags, one on each shoulder, and chase a toddler, I sized up one size so I would have adequate arm movement. I also added 20cm in length, for more coverage. Something that I struggled with when searching for a raincoat pattern was flap pockets- I couldn’t find one. The Kea pocket pack embodied my vision, so this truely was the right moment for this project. I used the zip pocket on the inside, and to add my story to this project, my initials are embroidered in the Woodland Alphabet style. I added a little Manuka flower as I’ve always admired this embroidery set. I top stitched the bottom hem in addition to the bottom facing. It seemed to help the softshell turn out better. This was my first time using softshell, and it wasn’t quite as difficult as I imagined. I’m excited for the next rainy school day! I can’t wait for the opportunity to create stories in my raincoat. #ttstorytellers #ttpixiecoat #ttkea #ttwoodlandalphabet #ttmanukaflowerembroidery

I know it’s a win when @dietrichfriesen puts it on as soon as I put the last snap in and has been wearing it since. I thrifted this piece of wool a while ago and knew I wanted to make him a coat for the transition to cooler weather. The September #TTStorytellers theme was “transitions” and while I didn’t get this finished last month, I planned to — because it’s a great transition piece. I used the @twigandtale Pixie Pea Coat as a base and added box pleat pockets and a classic collar thanks to the add-ons they have. I also added a concealed zipper, following the blog post. As a Storyteller, I received the patterns in exchange for sharing my honest experience. #TTPixiePeaCoat #TTPixieCoat #TTKeaPockets #TTKeaPocketAddOn #TTCollarAddOn #TTBoxPleatPocket #TTClassicCollar #TwigAndTale #TwigAndTalePatterns #SewYourStory

I can’t think of a coat I’ve made that has brought so much cheer! How colorful and cozy does this coat look! Huge pockets, a hood that swallows your head, flower buttons, all lined with a beautiful vintage floral sheet. The rainbow wools are some of my faves, and so whe. Eliza chose this one - I was thrilled. I have another rainbow vest coming next week too! One feature of this coat which makes it stand out to me in terms of a quality make is the facing - the way the wool outer extends into the front, bottom and sleeves of this coat. It’s an extra detail, that whole taking a whole lot of extra time, make the garment a bit more special. This beauty is on its way to @elizajune94 and I can’t wait to hear how she turns heads this winter! . . . #woolcoat #woolblanketcoat #blanketcoat #rainbow #rainbowwool #rainbowfashion #rainbowcoat #vintage #vintagefashion #vintagesheets #pixiepeacoat Pattern by @twigandtale using the #ttpixiecoat

My swim jacket is finished! Made with softshell and toweling lining, it’s a bit of a Work in Progress-Dream-Transitions @twigandtale Storyteller’s project, from reflecting in July that swimming lessons solo with three kids was really hard, to dreaming of a solution last month, to finally getting some photos in September as I’ve transitioned to using my coat. It has a lengthened Pixie Coat base, using the zipper closure option from the blog. I’ve used the Collar add on, Tui pocket add on and the Fishing Vest add on. I debated about snaps on the pockets and ultimately decided not to, although using my coat at swimming today I have decided I will put some on. I will need to acquire a matching colour of snaps, although I haven’t finalised what colour that is. Did it make swimming easier? Yes it did. Hoping to get nicer photos soon. It’s a bit too hard to get photos when it’s just me and the kids. #ttpixiecoat #ttembroidery @twigandtale #ttfishingvest

Just as the weather gets warmer, I’ve made my first proper coat 😆 I was very excited to be included in the @twigandtale Storytellers’ team for this year, where we pick projects to sew with different monthly themes to inspire us! Our theme for this month is colour. I was watching the Fold Line’s recent round up of current spring trends and Kate was saying how little colour there was on the high street. I love how my instagram feed and my own project plans continue to be a wealth of beautiful colour as sewists use their skills to add exactly what they want to their wardrobes 🌈 In the spirit of that, I was thinking a lot about colour when planning this project. The lining is a deadstock ASOS fabric, with the most beautiful combination of purple and red - which you get a peek at from the outside in the hood lining 🥰 The coat fabric itself has a lovely little lick of green and pink, another of my favourites, and it honestly makes me so happy to have been able to create a piece of clothing that will hopefully be a wardrobe staple for me, while expressing my particular colour favourites so well. I’ve made a couple of Dani jackets and a Heather blazer before, but this is my first coat proper. I’m very pleased with how it’s come out, especially my pattern placement with the checks which I was nervous about! I would highly recommend this pattern if you’re new to making outerwear, as the instructions are simple, gentle and thorough 😊 ✨ main fabric - plaid coating from @higgsandhiggs ✨lining fabric - floral satin from @rainbowfabrickilburn ✨ pattern - #TTpixiecoat, with box pleat pockets from the separate Kea expansion #ttstorytellers #sewyourstory #twigandtale #sewist #sewing #millennialsewist #imakemyownclothes #memadewardrobe #handmade #sewistsofinstagram #imadethis #memadeoutfit #thanksimadeit #sewinginstagram #sewingUK

One of those TIFU moments… but it all turned out good in the end. My daughter stopped napping months ago, so when her daycare blanket appeared in her locker, I figured it was being sent home. Since we didn’t need another crib size blanket, I started cutting it into a coat for her to stay cozy this fall. Queue the email from daycare saying “some parents” took the blankets home and to ensure your preschooler has one for school. Whoops. We swapped in another blanket (which was net by a few protests from the kid) and I kept going on my coat project. I used the @twigandtale Pixie Pea Coat and omitted the hood and pockets because I didn’t have enough fabric. I also omitted the lining and bound the seams and edges. I think it turned out so cute. The drama at the start of the project was totally worth it. #TTPixieCoat #TTPixiePeaCoat #TwigAndTalePatterns #TwigAndTale #TTStorytellers #SewYourStory

Had a bit of a sewing bee this weekend! Purple jacket was my first attempt at this pattern and I thought it was time to get in and cut up the fancy fabric I had stocked up on now that I know I can make one 😂 This is going to be my new winter work jacket - it is made from a stretch sports fleece (think tracksuit pants with the soft fleece on one side) and a cotton lining. It’s not too heavy but still plenty warm, and even though I sized down this time it is still roomy and VERY comfortable! I also experimented with patterned pocket flaps, sleeve trims and my first attempt at fabric covered buttons!! I can see myself ending up with a whole wardrobe full of these 😂 @twigandtale #ttpixiecoat #twigandtale
