#makersdecember2020 day 5 is '2' . At first I was stumped, I thought about reposting my second ever Instagram pic .. but frankly it was terrible... then I was scrolling through my makes and there was this. My oldest child, named after a giant invisible rabbit from cinematic history, has no particular love of rabbits. My youngest, named for an early pioneer in computer programming, thinks bunnies are fluff balls of joy. There’s no particular reason that a person’s name should bind them to common associations of that name. In fact, I take great delight when a person defies the expectations of their name (and other surface aspects of their self). And yet, I can’t help but note the small in-congruency of my children’s interests. This is the @twigandtale #ttanimalcape, made almost entirely from supplies in my stash. The wool, in particular, was once an old, ratty blanket that lined my mattress as a kid. I didn’t think I had any sentimentality for it, given that it was mostly out of sight when in use. But I’ve kept it with me wherever I’ve moved, even though I barely used it as an adult. There’s a homeliness and hardiness to the blanket that doesn’t match with any memory or relic of my childhood. I don’t know where this blanket came from or why it was “mine” (I’m not even sure it was meant to be mine; maybe it was absent-mindedly forgotten). I don’t remember any other blankets like it in the house. Maybe they were all hidden on mattresses, growing worn and unseen? But in my mind the blanket was special; a symbol of warmth and comfort. It survived the many purges of childhood things, and even moved countries with me. It felt strange to cut it up, but it felt stranger to shove it back in a cupboard. I transformed what remained of the blanket to wrap up my little girl. I hope she likes it. #nzsews #sewnz #twigandtale

My kids are in full blown make-believe mode these days, pretending to be their favourite book or TV show characters. I love that I can sew them costumes that are comfy enough to wear as clothes. My 5-year-old got into the Princess in Black series recently and asked me for a Goat Avenger costume. His little sister immediately requested a Princess in Black costume for herself. I used @twigandtale patterns to make them all. (Note that as a Storyteller I receive patterns in exchange for sharing my honest experience - I’ve made most of these patterns before as part of past projects, but the cape and suspender pants were new to me for this one). For the Goat Avenger, I used the Animal Cape with the giraffe/donkey ears and modified the ossicones to have a pointed end. My kid insisted on burlap for authenticity’s sake. The Harbour Top and Pixie Romper with bar straps completed the look. For the Princess in Black, I used the Traveller Cape and Fernway Culottes. For the top I mashed together the Fable Dress and Scenic Top. I took the Fable bodice and cut the front on the fold (similar to the blog for doing this with the adult version). I added a slit similar to the Scenic or Harbour Top at the back and a flounce and appliqué. I slashed and spread the sleeve to make it puffed. Instead of a full skirt, I used the bottom bit of the Scenic Top to extend it to top length. My four year old at first wanted to be a wolf. I figured I would use twig and tales fox pattern to alter into a wolf. When showing him the cape or vest option I also showed him all the animals he could choose at which point he declared he wanted a dragon cape of red and purple. A dragon for his first ever ren fest was really quite perfect and now he can enjoy his cape in his every day play as well! I still hope to make him a little wolf vest or cape now as well. Since part of his name means keeper of wolves I can’t let go of his original desire. The pattern is from the wonderful @twigandtale travelers cape with the animal and dragon add on.
