This has been a UFO (UnFinished Object) for maybe 6 months.... Possibly 9 months?!?! After making my husband the camel coloured shorts, I cut these black ones out straight away and they've been in the 'to finish' pile for ages. This is a great pattern, well written with videos to show every step. This is the above the knee option sign back pockets. I did the same changes - slash pockets instead of patch and lengthened the shorts by about 1.5 inches. I also omitted the waist ties. I'm planning on making one more pair by the summer! Words that trigger me - “mama, I need x (item) before y (timeline).” And 99% of the time, it’s last minute. . He told he badly needed berms for a 4D3N church camp 3 days before he is to go in. While my mouth was busy yapping away at why he is so last minute, my fingers were happily sewing this pair of #TTCoveShorts from @twigandtale for him. Cut it in an hour, sewed it up in between errands and they were done within the day! . That one last puzzle to complete his packing for the camp! Happy he is proud to don stuff I sew for him. . Sewing notes: Size 32 to fit his hips. He’s 1.52m maybe, I shortened rise by 1/2”, but added 3/4” to the thigh area. He would like it a tad shorter, but I’m an Asian mom and that extra 1/2” longer is perfect in my eyes 😂😂 . It was eve of Mother’s Day. I had then just finished sewing Thing 1 a new pair of berms. I got him to try it on, and told him I would like to a joyful photography session as my gift from him. I was in luck for he gladly obliged. Such is life with this teenage boy these days. It’s a common joke amongst us parents that we have to make appointment with them to just ask them for a meal! . As I looked through the lens of the camera, I must admit he has become quite a dashing young man! If not school uniform, he’s in his usual standard sports outfit. This smart casual looks really good on him. I am glad he would still wear my sews at his age. . The new Cove Shorts he’s donning is part of my Sew + Show initiative with @twigandtale where I was presented the pattern for free, and in return, to sew it up and to give an honest review. The shorts were easy to sew up with very clear and detailed instructions. Fit is good in my view, but he requested for the next pair to be just a tad smaller because he’s in a phase of more fitted outfits. My younger boy has also asked for the shorter version. I didn’t think he would fit a men’s pattern, but was very pleasantly pleased that this pattern includes youth/tween sizes, bridging from where the children’s sizes finish! . The fabric is a lightweight linen/cotton blend denim that I carted out from @withtheweave. It has a lovely weight and drape that is perfect for this shorts. When it rains, it pours…more shorts! Steve liked the last pair of linen shorts I made him, so I picked out this gorgeous purple Essex linen for him to make another pair, this time using the @twigandtale #TTCoveShorts. The pattern goes to a 66” hip (🙌) and includes lots of helpful tips for pattern adjustments. Steve has a long torso and I often find myself increasing pant rise, but his measurements lined up nicely with this size chart. The only adjustment I made was tightening the elastic to the wearer’s preference. My husband recently passed a comment that his RTW shorts felt like they didn't fit well. My reaction was to remind him that he has a wife that sews! So here are two shorts for him and there will be one more on its way at some point. It was nice having woven fabric for a change and finishing the seams and then top stitching. I did find the herringbone fabric frays easily so definitely needed a zigzagged edge. I didn't want to sew the pockets on to the front, but rather have them on the inside, so that was deviating from the pattern. I'm happy with how they turned out. The turquoise one was my toile and the only change I made was to lengthen the leg so that it sat a bit closer to the top of his knee and omit the waist ties as they felt more decorative. When boys were little, I remember loving to see inspo photos of boys dressed in linen/cotton shirts and shorts, and vowed to dress my boys in similar fashion. Alas, they live and breathe t-shirts and sports shorts, every single moment possible. . I remember this fabric well. I bought it from a little fabric shop in Munich during my travel in 2017. I had then just started sewing, and those images flooded my mind and I had strong determination to change how they dress. The lady at the store said 0.75m would more than suffice for … probably Thing 1 then. . Fast forward 7 years, 0.75m is hardly enough to cover Thing 1’s butt and there was still no shorts. Don’t judge me 😂😂 . But. I managed to, thankfully, squeeze out a pair of shorts for Thing 2. While this is a far cry from my desired look like those in the magazines, the fact that he would wear chequered shorts is a big enough a win for me. . Loving this shorts pattern! Suspect this pattern is gonna be used a couple more times in the next few weeks as I seek to replenish the clothes they have outgrown. . Cove Shorts 🌿 I love my husband. I wish I could sew more often for him. Being well over 6 foot, I have to adjust every pattern and it’s a lot of fabric if I miscalculate. What I appreciated about the Cove shorts was the ease at adjusting the pattern. I used the projector file, which is really great on its own with thick lines, easy to read and mirrored pieces, and easily found where to adjust and added the measurements directly as I cut. I used “mystery” fabric (ie I have no idea what it is!) which was given to me by my children’s swim teacher and received the pattern for free in exchange for my photos. He’s really happy with his shorts and would like more pairs, but in a few months when winter is over!! It gives me time me to sew now and be ready. I got to test out the amazing new @twigandtale Cove Shorts pattern a few weeks ago and I absolutely love how my first pair came out. Probably not the best photography I've ever done, mostly because we had to keep stopping to manage our wild toddler (see last picture for a sneaky pic of how that went 😂) but the shorts themselves were super easy and fun to sew up. And @mattneilsmart was made up that this pattern was for him. He said the shorts were really comfy and cool so perfect for the lovely weather we've been having ☀️🌼 Fabric: duck egg ramie linen from @northernmonkeymakes which is amazing and I'm planning to get it in more colours asap. Though I have made many pieces of clothing for the men in my life, this is the first time one has deigned to model. What’s better than a new pair of Cove shorts you ask? Two pairs of course!! Made these #ttcoveshorts for my husband’s birthday last month and he was pleasantly surprised at the fit and how comfortable they are to wear. This is my first time making clothes for him so I am very happy he enjoys wearing them. I used a cotton drill (crazy easy to sew with) and opted for double stitching the seams and I think it gives them such a neat finish. Even dared stitch one pair with a contrasting colour. Added a little tag with a reminder for him too ♥️ These were a relatively quick sew and as always the tutorial by @twigandtale are easy and clear to follow. I didn’t realize how much summer would affect my sewing practice. During the school year, we manage to maintain a rhythm in our family schedule, but the heat and late nights totally disrupt that. We spend a lot more time than I’d like indoors until the evening comes, and by that point we’re all desperate for the freedom that fresh air brings. Now that both of my babies are older, summer feels more dynamic and fun in ways that it didn’t before. Car rides are no longer as stressful. Pools, libraries, splash pads, evening beach trips, and the aquarium have been our home away from home which means a lot more knitting for me these days. This month’s Twig + Tale Storyteller theme is “Dream”, and I reflect on how much I’ve learned in the past year and a half. I’ve wanted to sew for as long as I can remember, and where I am in my journey feels like just that, a dream. I could also say that most of my sewing time happens at night when my children are dreaming, another perk of these endlessly long days 😅. This is the T+T Breeze shirt #TTBreezeShirt and the #TTCoveShorts in a 42 worn together as a set. The top is cotton chambray and the shorts are a cotton linen blend from Ribes y Casals. The fit guide in both patterns is spot on, and I was able to get a great fit without adjustments despite his measurements falling in different sizes. His shirt is finished with french seams and a bias bound split hem, and he loves it. I made the shorts for his birthday last month, and he wears them all the time. After trying out a bunch of other pattern designers, it’s clear that T+T is in a league of its own. When you know your garment is going to turn out right the first time, there is no feeling like it. My husband and my oldest son in their new Cove shorts. These I made in gauze, and I had to reenforce the crotch seams with bias tape, so the seams don't rip. Here's the 2nd pair of #TTCoveShorts that I made recently for my husband. Since the 1st pair was a bit artsy, I wanted to also sew a plain version that would show off all the original pattern lines. The topstitching on the pockets and shorts was a makeshift solution inspired by the thread-dyed multicolor weave of the sturdy linen fabric - I realized at home (Saturday evening) that I did not have a beige-brown thread at home. To emphasize the orange topstitching I also chose a few tags in the same colour family, et voilá - an original and unique pair of shorts was born. The 13 year old requested new shorts and I thought I shouldn’t waste time…how long will the teenager want Mama-made clothes?! He was specific with his requests - pull on, green (maybe blue), front pockets and long. This guy is often talking about how he needs new shorts. I thrifted this piece of linen with the idea of making him a pair of airy shorts for summer.
