Another #twigandtale #ttforagingsatchel! I have used my previous one every day since I made it, but since day one have wished I’d added extra pockets or loops. So I was brave on this one and added lots. Keeping up my raid of the handkerchief stash, the red fabric is a handkerchief, as is the checked fabric for one of the big pockets, the floral fabric for the main pocket, and the white pocket with the pink floral embroidery. The other little pocket is a solo napkin I picked up for .50c at an opshop over Christmas, and is actually two pockets - I left an opening in the top so that there is a mini pocket inside that pocket. Loops on either side to hook on keys etc so they won’t keep getting lost in my bag - a pet peeve of husband on the one day in the week he uses that car. The grey fabric is a remnant piece of wool blend picked up from the local craft store’s remnant box again - I can’t walk past it without having a look. Small flaws and quite small, but I was able to work around it. Embroidery from the (relatively) recently released #ttembroidery Undersea Garden. I’m not super happy with the fish, but this was as good as they were getting after a few unstitch-re-stitch loops. LOVED learning some of the new stitches in those patterns though. Very effective.

Have I mentioned I love sewing and making? Oh yea probably 😉 this is my latest make it’s a small #ttforagingsatchel from @twigandtale and it’s just the perfect size as a hand bag. Fits all the essentials I need, including an A5 note book and sewing pouch if I feel the need coming on when out and about. Our storyteller theme this month is renew and this bag fits right in. The lining is from an old linen curtain and precious tiny offcuts from a dress. The exterior fabric is a heavy weight linen for durability. I also added a cotton wadding to the back and flap and love how that turned out, along with some additional compartments in the big pocket perfect for my wallet, phone and a pen. Oh and a button closure to keep things extra secure. A project of mine would not be complete without some embroidery of course! I modified the Helena pattern from @kasiajacquotembroidery and added some extra stitching. This was such a fun make and I really enjoyed the process, as always super clear instructions along with a video tutorial. I highly recommend!!! Day 5 of the Satchel Sew-along is here! Where we left off yesterday, the Satchel is starting to take shape - how is yours coming along? Today, we’ll attach the Satchel Front to the Flap + Back pieces, using a bit of T+T magic for a bag that looks just as good inside, as it does outside! If you’re keen to have a bit of extra fun decorating your Flap, now is a great time to do so - you can incorporate applique and embroidery like @sashannahartmaker did in this amazing Foraging Satchel for her son, or let your imagination run wild with all sorts of decorative techniques. To begin, we'll start to form the lining pocket, for keeping all manner of treasures safe inside. Then, we’ll attach the outer combined Flap + Back to the Satchel front, followed by making a Satchel sandwich with the lining. This may feel a bit counterintuitive, but just stick it out - it’s so fun to watch a bag turn out at the end, just like magic! Tomorrow we’ll come back to finish off our Satchel with all the delicious details - a neatly finished lining, and beautiful topstitched or quilted flap. This will be a great chance to finish any extra steps you haven’t completed yet as well - there’s no such thing as “behind” in a T+T sew-along, as we love to let projects take the time they need, but if your goal is to finish within the scheduled sew-along, you’ll have plenty of time to catch up. Of course, we’re happy to answer any questions in the comment section - we’d love to hear what you think so far, too! Are you enjoying making your Satchel? We’d love to see where you are at as well - make sure to tag us @twigandtale and use #TTSatchelSewalong in your posts and stories so we can cheer you on. Until tomorrow, happy sewing! Xox

Combining leather scraps, the Kawakawa leaf blanket pattern, and the Forgaing Satchel helped to create a little bit of Everyday Magic for my life ✨️ I pieced together some leather scraps I had been saving to create a new piece of fabric the size of the large, landscape option of the Foraging Satchel. I then projected the Kawakawa leaf (from the New Zealand Leaf Blanket pattern), sized it to fit, then drew it onto the bag. Then out to the garage we went! Using a wood burner, I followed my template and carefully burnt the design into the bag before construction (in case I messed it up 😂). As the leather is quite thin, I made this on my normal sewing machine with a leather needle. The black lining and sides are made from a thrifted piece of felt, and the purple lining was a thrifted bed sheet. I was gifted the Foraging Satchel as a member of the Storytellers Team 🌿 #TwigandTale #TTforagingsatchel #TTleafblanket #ttforester #TTStorytellers, #SewYourStory #memademay #everydaymagic

Last Saturday I took Jack hiking at one of our favorite places on the Blue Ridge Parkway, White Rock Falls. I have hiked this trail numerous times and in probably all seasons. It was a gorgeous Saturday, with a high of 62 in the mountains. Jack took his beloved foraging satchel and we both were delighted to be wearing overalls again. Jack reminded me, "Mom, it is Saturday. We have no time table except sun up and sun down." We took our time looking at the mountain laurels which were in bloom and eating our lunch at the lookout. I counted more wild orchids than I had ever seen on the trail previously. Thank God for slow Saturdays, with overalls and flowers and no ticks! *I received the #ttforagingsatchel pattern gratis in exchange for photos and storytelling. #heydaydungarees #twigandtale #ttstorytellers #sewyourstory #blueridgeparkway #whiterockfalls #sewists #sewistsofinstagram #getoutstayout #adventure #fewersidewalksmoretrails

I started the year thinking that I would be sewing more for hubby and myself, but so far the sewing seem to be only getting smaller 🙈😂 I made this one by printing the small portrait Foraging Satchel at 50% and got the most perfectly-sized carrier for a pocket miscroscope (along with some simple stringbound A6 sketchbook)) as a birthday gift for an 8yo family friend 🥰 I used cotton duck outer and calico for the lining, and had no issue at all with the reduced 5mm seam allowance. I embroidered the recipient's initial on a piece of wool felt, and used it to cover the back of a sew-in Velcro patch. Very pleased with how this handmade gift turned out - it was so quick and a great scrapbuster! My big kid wanted a rainbow backpack for weekend adventures and I figured the new #TTForagingSatchel would make a great base. He painted the rainbow — making it a true collab. To hack it, I cut the back and top flap lining pieces twice instead of using the combined piece for the main. (You can look up the Contrast + Directional Flap Hack on the @twigandtale blog for more detailed instructions on this.) I cut the loop piece twice and used the alternate strap piece as a guide to create two straps (the larger size was great for a 4-foot-tall kid but you’d probably want to add length for a bigger human.) Then I basted the loops and straps to the back piece. You can see the last photo for a visual of what the back piece looks like before it’s sewn into the bag. The rest came together according to the instructions. He’s already filled it with treasures to take around the yard. And of course, the rainbow ties in perfectly to this month’s Storyteller’s colour theme. #SewYourStory #TTStorytellers #twigandtale #TTSatchel #TTSatchelSewalong

The T+T Annual November Sale starts tomorrow - one of just two chances each year to save on the entire T+T pattern collection. We choose to hold a sale in early November, away from the noise and chaos of Black Friday, which feels like everything that Twig + Tale is not - fast, cheap, more. We prefer the chance to come sit a while - carefully considering your pattern collection, and see what new additions you would like to add to it. A chance to plan for handmade garments and accessories that will bring joy every time you wear them. It's also a wonderful time of year to start making handmade gifts. As the season accelerates to a frenzied pace, you can make a conscious effort to celebrate the quiet joy of settling into slow, intentional sewing. Why not start getting your wishlist ready now, for an even more relaxed sale experience? Link in bio

Do you like to find ways to include your little ones in sewing projects? @againstthegrainline made this extra-special Foraging Satchel-turned-backpack with her son - when he said he wanted a rainbow bag for school, she knew he had a very specific vision in mind, and so let him have a go at creating his own artwork for a one-of-a-kind bag he can be proud of. What about you? Do you like letting your little ones in on the fun? Do they like to design projects with you, pick out fabrics, help decorate things? It's been such a joy as my daughter has grown and taken an interest more and more in learning to sew herself, and getting to join in the fun together! ❤

I have finished my first #ttforagingsatchel and what a fun sew this was! I enjoyed this pattern from start to finish. I bought the external fabric years ago and I have sewn a few beginner projects with it. From memory it is a lightweight cotton canvas and it is so easy to work with. I did encounter a small hiccup with sewing the back and front together. I mistakingly sewed them together with an open seam vs closing the seam first which resulted in seeing a raw seam inside the bag. I had a feeling I did something wrong but I must admit I was a bit keen to see the bag come together so I ignored my instinct to double check. I decided to unpick and sew again for a nice clean finish. I can’t say that I have completed a project to date without needing to unpick a seam! I am so pleased with the end result and my little is pretty happy with her new satchel to take on adventures. I’m quite impressed with how much fits in this compact bag. It was a very quick sew with clear and concise instructions. I don’t doubt I’ll be making another one in the near future. Thanks @twigandtale for another lovely pattern and fun sew along! We’ve reached Day 6 of our Satchel Sew-along, and it’s time to add those delicious finishing details that make every project truly complete. Today’s sew-along will look a bit different depending on whether you are sewing the Foraging Satchel or Leaf Satchel, as each has different details to help it shine. Firstly though, for either Satchel, you’ll want to close up your turning hole in the lining, for a Satchel that looks just as beautiful inside as it does outside. We recommend using a ladder stitch to close it up by hand - this will give you the cleanest finish, as your stitches will disappear right into the seam to end up almost imperceptible. From here, you’ll either topstitch the outer edge of your Foraging Satchel flap, for a nice crisp edge - or, you’ll quilt your Leaf Flap to give it its beautiful vein detail and dimensional feel, like this one by @mooseandpenguinphotography. And with that - your Satchel is finished! Come on back tomorrow, and show off your Satchel for a chance to win a T+T shop credit - yay! We’ll be sharing all the details in tomorrow’s post. Not yet finished? That’s ok - it’s so important to give these projects the time they need. Feel free to work at your own pace, and we will be leaving the giveaway open for plenty of time to allow you to enter. xox (Inspired to try a Satchel of your own, but haven't gotten the pattern yet? Only one day remains to enjoy sale savings, so make sure you pick yours soon! Link in bio.)

Our April Storyteller theme has been a fun one... it's all about Colour! 💛💖💙💚 Inspired by the theme, Storyteller @little_wild_creative explored and experimented with some of the myriad of colours which can be extracted from wildcrafted natural dyes - the photos show just a small selection of the dye colours that she has made using wild foraged materials and kitchen scraps! She then compiled a collection of these hand-dyed scraps to create an incredible Foraging Satchel to take along on future wildcrafting adventures. Natural dyeing can feel complicated - like there's some sort of magical alchemy involved - so we're pleased to share some of her wisdom and experience on the T+T blog this month to help demystify the process. We love her relaxed, experimental approach to natural dyeing: experience, intuition, and an attitude of creative exploration have yielded a rainbow of colours with such beauty and subtlety, they could only come from nature. Visit our bio link to read more about the process on the blog and see her gorgeous photos - by the time you're done reading, you'll be inspired to go foraging and make some dye yourself!

I picked up some mystery translucent remnants for nothing two years ago from a neighbourhood curtain shop which was closing down, without the faintest idea of what to do with them (curtains, maybe? 😅) ... until I saw this dreamy tote bag by @jojogohgoh that was made in tulle on @bag.uettes 's IG story. It's been on my mind since to try something similar, so when I had the opportunity to sew something for myself with the new satchel pattern by @twigandtale , I decided to give it a go. The pattern is probably a stroke of blessing for me as my first with the shifty but stiff organza-like fabric - the simple lines, easy to follow and true to all T+T's patterns, aspires in its tutorial to achieve a good, beautiful finish. I feel encouraged to add some hand stitching in the process, to tack down the inner and outer lining, and this turned to be one of my favourite features on this bag 💛 I also added a button loop closure to the front flap in anticipation of the 'floatiness' and almost got carried away with how I could feature the bias loop - I mean, nothing gets to hide here! 😂 (Tip you didn't ask for: If you are making bias strips with organza, I find marking and fingerpressing the fold lines much easier before ironing them directly 😉) And I love how it turned out! The satchel is surprisingly durable as it's fully lined (with limits of course, but fit enough for my everyday use). It is the *most* lightweight bag I've ever had - it literally floats on my shoulder when there's nothing in it 😂 I've gone rogue with the material recommendation on this pattern, but the great thing is that it still works and the best part has to be the non-essential hardware option, which means that I could sew straight from my stash (which will come in handy again as you shall soon see 😂). I know there will be many more of this satchel in my future, in many different styles and sizes 😉 And my year-long sewing itch finally scratched!! 🤣 Congrats on the release, T+T - it has been amazing to see all the beautiful satchels in the Sew+Show ❤ Pattern: Foraging Satchel @twigandtale (small portrait, knotted strap) 🌿 This pattern was gifted to me as part of the Sew+Show.

Happy to be jumping back into sewing with the Twig and Tale Foraging satchel sew along. It has been so fun choosing fabric and thinking of all the different ways I could make this bag. This pattern has been fun to explore with this month’s Storyteller theme of color as the possibilities are endless. The new Satchel patterns have been so inspiring to us behind the scenes already - so much so, we just had to test out some different ways to hack them. The possibilities are endless! I've found this Hip Pouch to be an elegantly versatile option - with self-made swivels to allow for the strap to sit comfortably no matter how they are worn, I love the option to go about my day with a hands-free carrying option that includes an extra bit of whimsy. ✨ Perfect for everyday adventures, it would also be a delightful option for Faires, LARP, costumes and more as well! Want to make your own? Come visit the blog! I've shared a full run down of how to create it, complete with photos, videos, and more. I'll pop the post in our bio link for easy access. I hope you love making and using yours, just as much as I have. 🌿 -Erica xox

There's so many ways to prevent textile waste...and make it look amazing! @dustlandcreek saved up waste leather scraps, piecing them together to create pieces large enough for this landscape Foraging Satchel. Then, with a spark of creativity, she projected the Kawakawa Mini Leaf onto the leather, resizing to fit the space, and used her pyrography tool to print it into the leather. So cool! What unexpected ways have you embellished your sewing projects before?

A sweet little foraging satchel for a sweet little 3 year old. Otis is master 6’s school friend’s little brother and gets on well with Miss 4 at school pick ups and a few play dates we’ve had. We all found ourselves at the same camp site on the same days over the Christmas holidays and the kids all had a ball of a time together. I am often presented with stones, leaves, flowers etc, and his mum’s pockets get full with them on walks. I think he’ll love having a little bag he can fill with his finds. I’m sure his mum’s pockets will appreciate it! His birthday party is on the weekend - this will be both present and gift bag for Zog and the Flying Doctors and his favourite crackers. Much smoother sailing making this Foraging Satchel - and I learnt my lesson from last time and made sure to add some extra length to the security band so it all reached properly. Not sure if I’m cutting it strangely or if the pattern pieces are too short? First time using the Woodland Alphabet embroidery. Kept it simple on this one. Miss 4 wanted me to include every available image and cover the whole front flap but I have another gift I’m trying to complete for the weekend so time wasn’t on my side. #twigandtale #twigandtaleembroidery #ttforagingsatchel

The headaches this project has given me! I have a few other projects on my radar so I thought I’d join the #TTSatchelSewAlong for this bag as a good way to ease back onto the sewing machine after a bit of a break. Ha! Not the fault of the project, which is a really lovely bag and I’ll be making many more over the years, but this one just didn’t seem to want to get made. The thread just kept bunching - I tried all the usual tricks and nothing worked. It would be fine, fine, fine, then bunch. I’d unpick it, tweak something on the machine, start again and it would be fine, then bunch. So A LOT of unpicking to begin with. And then I misunderstood an instruction and sewed the loop on the wrong place. Unpick. Then the security band was somehow about an inch too short. Ah well, I’ll sort that out later. Finally coming together, just a few steps to go and I decided that it needed a Kōwhai embroidery on the front flap. Hours enjoyably embroidering that. Lovely. Came to sew it together and I’d embroidered the wrong side (lesson learned re: when the instructions say ‘do any embellishments now’, don’t then decide to do them last minute instead!). Unpick the handsewn turning hole. Unpick the main part of the bag. Unpick the 'back and flap' from the rest and turn it over. Unpicking so often had led to very weakened fabric, so rips in the fabric, so some trimming of the flap, and deeper seam allowance everywhere else. Sew it all back together, and sew the raw edge of the security band that, being too short, hasn’t tucked away into the lining like the other side has. Press the bag, ready to topstitch the flap and be finished, and, end of the night, not enough sleep, glad to be nearly finished, I didn’t think and ironed over the embroidery. Too hot for the embroidery threads, which have gone a bit flat and maybe nearly melted?? Any of you who embroider and know how long one like this takes will know my heartbreak at this point. But it’s done! And I’ll probably make another, smaller, one soon. Hopefully that one will go more smoothly! @twigandtale #twigandtale #twigandtaleembroidery #ttforagingsatchel

Did you see the @twigandtale satchel sew along? I’m on my own timeline, with just up to admiring my fabric. It was a busy end to term and I’ve been playing around with my projector and placement as I only have about 40cm of this beautiful border print. It’s going to be an amazing #ttforagingsatchel . We watched the new 28min episode on Sunday. It’s definitely a tear jerker.

I borrowed my daughter's recently-completed @twigandtale Overland Cloak for a walk and photos the other day, and am now convinced that I was born in the wrong century. Been feeling a bit of the creative doldrums lately...I can't quite decide what project to pursue next. Ever had that happen to you? I'm thinking it's time to dig through the scrap bin a bit and see what inspires me - I often find a wonderful creative spark hidden within those little bits and bobs of fabric! And goodness knows I have enough. (You, too? 😆) Perhaps it's the puzzle-like challenge; the satisfied feeling of eliminating waste; the fun memories of projects past - or a bit of all of it, that makes it so fun! Thinking back to these Foraging and Leaf Satchels I made a while back, which started life as a bag full of leftover bits of cotton ripstop. Pieced together and appliqued with some cotton upholstery materials, they've become favorite everyday-adventure bags for my daughter and I. What about you - is the scrap bin inspiring for you? -Erica x

It's still -21C here but I have another wool tee to wear. This is the @greenstyle_patterns #gstrailjacket made out of superfine merino wool from @discoveryfabrics .The fabric is lovely and sews up beautifully. I am guessing because it is lighter weight it doesn't drape as much as the heavier weight wool jersey does (see last post). Also shown is my patchwork #ttforagingsatchel @twigandtale which I neglected to post after testing it almost a year ago. It's a great little bag and I use it a lot. Both made out of well seasoned fabrics! #2fromstashamonth @salixsews and @septemberfaden . #fibremoodclover pants posted back on my grid. #sewover50 #sewover50feb #nofrillsfebruary #magamsewalong @yogabyrdsews @sewing_in_spain and @suestoney #bcsews #imakemyownclothes #memadeeveryday #discoveryfabrics #greenstylepatterns
