My top nine for 2020 reveals a shift in my colour palette from cool to warm colours. Previously, I’ve almost exclusively dressed in neutrals and greens. I wouldn’t say I reach for these warmer coloured garments as often as I do the others, but they get their share of love and wear. They were among my most “liked” garments, so perhaps I’m not so badly suited to earthy colours as I thought! . Already posted my @stylearc #sahopewovendresshack (middle left) but you haven’t yet seen the #jedediahpants by @threadtheorydesigns made for my husband’s birthday; mixed success but good experience (top left). Bottom left was arguably the most sewing fun I had in July - helping my middle son make a banner in support of his London Aussie Rules club’s women’s side in their league final. I made this very early in pregnancy, with the hopes that it would work throughout and it really has! I can’t remember now (oops!) but I think I added a bit more width all around. Did everyone get through the full moon okay? I felt like I was vibrating nervous energy all day. Still trying to keep calm and not feel overwhelmed. One of the things that helps me feel calm is looking up to the sky. It’s part of the reason I started this project of documenting the sky daily. So many beautiful things happen up there and if you find yourself looking up you know you’re taking time for yourself. Even if it’s just a minute. Well, it’s been a VERY long time since I have sewn anything! Not that I didn’t want to, but the first half of this year was taken up with finding a new apartment (our previous landlord was selling up), preparing the move, moving, and putting stuff away. The latter phase is still not quite finished but at least I finally have my sewing machines up and running! I made something small to get back into the swing of things - the Sorrento Bucket Hat by @elbe_textiles . I can finally wear my new summer overalls! They are the expansion pack of the #partnerreadytosew by @ready_to_sew with a couple of mods. Today's me-made MVP is my #sorrentobuckethat from @elbe_textiles . I have a whole bucket hat spiele. Why pack a whole ass sunhat when you could pack a bucket hat? It packs easier, but it still covers your face. It's so functional. The year I made this one, I also made one for my baby brother (star wars themed) and one for my brother-in-law(eagles themed). I will probably make more. The thing I love about the Sorrento hat is that it comes in several sizes so they make great presents, and I think the brim is slightly larger than commercial bucket hats, so it really does do a nice job keeping the sun off your face. The last two photos are a couple bucket hat inspo pics I really liked, which I am including for anyone who likes the idea of a bucket hat but isn't sure how to make it cute. Please reference. On this hat: You know I love a contrasting fabric. Spring weather in Portland varies so much! One day it's 80 degrees, the next day it's 65. I just finished this #HomebodyQuiltedJacket from @MatchyMatchySewingClub and it's the perfect, snuggly layer for cool spring days. I loved making this jacket and it was a great way to showcase some English paper piecing, as well as using leftovers from other projects. Say hello to my full denim spring outfit! It’s been finished for a while now—and has already been tested in both Italy and Finland, so it’s a keeper. This #fibremoodkristy was made to match my #smartpatternbaggyjeans, and I topped it off with the #sorrentobuckethat for a full denim look. A few changes I made to the #fmkristy: a) Lengthened it by 2–3 cm (#sewingtall) b) Enlarged the pockets a bit—probably didn’t need to, they were already pretty roomy c) Left the raw selvedge edge visible on the back yoke seam d) Did the same on the sleeve hems—planning to always wear them cuffed for a relaxed feel e) Skipped topstitching on the front seam for a cleaner, minimal look (but added hidden hand stitches to hold things in place) The fit is wide and boxy—I made my usual size M, but sizing down to an S might’ve worked better for me, especially with this structured overstock denim. It almost feels like a jacket! But I do love the deep V-neck, the big pockets, and how easy it is to layer. As for the sorrento bucket hat? Total winner. Great sun protection and that unisex, urban-cool vibe I really love. Pretty sure it’s the first hat I’ve ever sewn (though I used to knit a few). There’s something I love about matching sets—they’re so easy to style, and look just as good pared back. Can’t wait to see how this denim softens and fades with wear. Still in exile from our home, so sewing and shooting content is tricky. Most of my clothes are packed away until June. Here's my #mmellsworthshirt made in a mad rush before my hols and using two 1 metre remnants of the same colourway cotton from @raystitch.🏵️🏵️🏵️ It's a great pattern for contrast fabric with placket, collar, cuffs and hem band easily switched up. I had no time to ponder this so just went straight in with the scissors.✂️✂️✂️ I like the high low hemline and grown on sleeve shape, although it's fabric hungry. Other #mmellseworth sewists suggest sizing down, this is a 12 and definitely roomy, but I wanted that in the humidity. 🌴🌴🌴 The buttons are vintage from my stash, I think picked up in a sewing swap somewhere. Different cuff buttons though as I didn't have enough. The #katm label is seriously wonky but hey "no toile club" or no time club it was on this make! Obviously now I owe Mr SoZo another pound 😆 (joke in reference to the fact that I pay my kids £1 whenever I take their photo for Instagram as disclosed on a previous episode of @checkyourthread) . Anyways, this #buckethat was actually the first thing I made this year. I was feeling pretty rubbish about all the excesses and waste of Christmas, and I really wanted to make something out of what others might perceive as waste. . I’d also spent the best part of two weeks away from my home (and therefore sewing machine) so was desperate to for a quick win project. . Cutting fabric the high-tech way! Got this #dittopatternprojector from Joann’s closing sale at 70% discount. It worked better than I expected! I was able to tap into my library of pattern PDFs and convert them into a format that can be uploaded to the Ditto app. I can also get their patterns which are ready to project upon purchase. I cut the fabric for the #sorrentobuckethat using the pattern I put together with #pdfstitcher and uploaded to my Ditto pattern library. It worked seamlessly! No more glueing pages of PDFs together and tracing onto tracing paper! . . #patternprojector #fabriccutting @dittopatterns @singernorthamerica

May be my favorite make to date!!! Kept almost donating this fabric but then kept taking it from the donation pile. Pretty sure it was originally from @chrisjoness91 ‘ mom’s stash which makes it even more special. The fusible fleece interfacing also came from her stash. Finally decided to use it to make it a bucket hat but then had to wait a few months until Christmas sewing was complete. Inside fabric is another special fabric- it was my Aunt Lib’s from curtains she had made for their smith Mountain Lake house where I spent many special times. I’ve also made a pair of #pomonashorts out of that fabric. I love how the fleece made it extra firm and soft and I really love the quilted brim. Pattern is the #sorrentobuckethat from @elbe_textiles . I’ve made their #serpentinehat many times@but just wanted a bucket hat with regular sized brim for this one . Might see if I have enough for a #rubyvest from @hisydgraham

I've been on a hat "journey" 😂. These might be one of my favorite things to make. . . . I think I've settled on the #sorrentobuckethat in teal as my favorite overall, and teal #serpentinehat as my favorite summer sun protection for the city. The #bisouvisor looks semi ridiculous on me but I love it for early morning walks with a ponytail on top of my head.
