Somerfield Coat
The Somerfield Coat is a mix between a robe and a housecoat with a relaxed fit and deep V front that ties at the front. It features facings with mitered corners on the hem and splits on both sides. View A has 7/8 length sleeves with a large hem turn up while View B has mid length flared sleeves with a rolled hem. Suitable for light to medium weight woven fabrics with good drape.

A sweet linen @elbe_textiles set that I made who knows when. Perfect for this glorious day. Added a little flutter ruffle atop the shoulders of the dress. Somebody made an enthusiastic attempt steal the show and needed to be escorted off set #peppermintbardondress #somerfieldcoat #elbatextiles

Days 20 of #memademay2025. My go to pattern for a duster, #somerfieldcoat by @elbe_textiles. This is coat 2 out of 3. The ever so practical garment. #memademay @sozoblog #sewover50 #curvysewingpatterns

Day 15 I love everything about this lengthened #somerfieldcoat (pattern @elbe_textiles ). Not only do I love the garment itself, but I especially love it because it makes me think of @thiswaydelight who made the most beautiful dress out of this linen. Her version was the motivation to look for the fabric and I finally found a few metres in Switzerland. It was quite expensive but it was worth it. The fabric is exquisite and works so well with the pattern. The hallway of the @bratsera_hydra was the perfect backdrop for this photo. #elbetextilespatterns #elbetextiles #naniirofabric @itoitonao #memade #memadeeveryday #memademay #memademay2025 #imakemyclothes #imakemyownclothes #handmadewardrobe #sewsewsew #sewing #sewistsofinstagram #japaneselinen #nähenistwiezaubernkönnen #nähenistmeinyoga #nähen #sewcialist #sewingcommunity

I did not post nearly enough of the photos from this shoot I did with @sophie.sews and @lukejohnsonpix Please admire Sophie wearing the Gibbons Slip Dress in a viscose sandwash twill from @wearethefabricstore and the Somerfield Coat in a printed silk, also from The Fabric Store. This coat sample is available to purchase on my Etsy store - along with a bunch of others. So head on over to my bio if you're keen for a one off garment- there's a link there that will take you to the shop. Orrrr if you want to make your own- go on then, I sell the patterns too 😏 #gibbonsslipdress #somerfieldcoat #sewingpattern

I have quickly discovered the only downside to having an industrial straight stitch is how long it takes me to finish the buttonhole on an otherwise finished pair of jeans. • I have been compiling a BUNCH of denim inspo on Pinterest and wanted to make a pair of jeans with a fun twist. For this pair, I started with the #helenejeans from @annaallenclothing. I made the wide leg version with a 30” inseam in a size 00 with -1/4” from the rise and -3/4” flat seat adjustment. • I changed things up with this pair by adding a front yoke and inseam pockets (borrowed from the #coeteouser). I also swapped the traditional patch pocket on the back for a welt pocket (borrowed from the #closetcoremitchell). I love how much these little details change the aesthetic of this pair of jeans and it was really satisfying to bring my Pinterest inspo to life. • The denim I used for this pair is a dark wash Japanese denim from @saltlakesewciety. Ringing in at 13.5oz, it is definitely going to take some breaking in but I love the wash and feel of it! • I definitely have some more denim hacks cooked up, so stay tuned. • Top: #rioringer @truebias Size 0 in a Bamboo Rib Jacket: #somerfieldcoat @elbe_textiles size AA in a cotton I bought in Japan Jeans: #helenejeans @annaallenclothing with hacks above in a denim from @saltlakesewciety • #memade #deniminspiration #denim #japanesedenim #indiesewing #patternhack #sewistofinstagram #sewing #sewists #memadeeveryday

I’m so pleased to be featured in a “Curated By You” post on the @fabricsstorecom online community “The Thread.” They generously gifted me this lovely black linen to sew a garment of my choosing and I made the #somerfieldcoat from @elbe_textiles You can read a bit about me and my sewing journey over that way (link in bio). Also be sure to check out the other features—there’s a wealth of inspiring and informative content there! By the way, I’m obsessed with this lightweight coat and wear it almost every time I leave the house. The linen and pattern are a perfect match! Highly recommend. Wedding guest looks!!! I made this @elbe_textiles #somerfieldcoat in this cupro bemberg from @lyricalfabrics knowing I wanted to wear it to my friend's wedding but having enough fabric left over (I shortened the pattern by 6 inches because I'm such a lil gorl!) to make a @helens__closet #orchardtop! The Orchard Top is really great for all the times you are like this would be a perfect Ogden Cami but I don't want to / don't have enough fabric for a lining. It's really scratching an itch for me and I'm sure it's going to be a heavily used pattern in my rotation. This was actually a wearable muslin for me, next time I will shorten the straps about an inch but I don't think it needs any other mods! The Somerfield Coat came out exactly as I envisioned it, perfectly drapey and I just love Lauren's construction method so much. It was so satisfying to sew. And I'm glad I was able to include a tag that my friend gave me for my birthday last year! I've been hording them for a perfect make like this! My skirt is a vintage gift from my aunt! #thanksimadeit #sewistsofinstagram #sewing #pocsewists

After much deliberation for far too long, I finally decided to take the sleeves off this #ElbeTextiles #SomerfieldCoat Which I then realised while on a Teams call, is now giving hi-viz vibes. I’ll have to wear my blunnies with it next time. #CottonDoubleGauze #CornellShirt #ArcherWorkPants

Finally cut into one of my more priced fabric and I'm really happy with the result. I made this dress back in March when it was still warm. Got to wear it a bit for autumn before having to layer it for winter. 🧵 Pattern: I used the #saadelinedress by @stylearc in a size 12. I modified it so I can use up all of the fabric. Instead of using the pattern as is, I chopped it off at the waist and made a gathered skirt using the entire width of the fabric. I also used waste off cuts to make the pockets. I love Styles Arc patterns for projects like this because I know their size works for me and their fabrics are simple enough that I can make those adjustments without too many issues. I didn't even make a toile, just went straight in. Because I only have a very small amount of this fabric, I end up using a generic, cheaper bottom cotton to do the internal facings for the dress. In the end, all I'm left with is a small palm size bit of left over fabric. 🧵 Fabric: a cotton fabric by #naniirofabric from years ago. #melbournesew #petitesewing #indipatterns #sewingmystash

Made this @elbe_textiles #somerfieldcoat right before our honeymoon for chilly London days, but didn't find a chance to snap photos until the very end of our trip! The pattern seems to have changed, as almost every version I see has princess seams and pockets, which are no longer included. This streamlined coatigan silhouette, though, is just what I was looking for to fill a spot in my wardrobe. I love the slits and mitered corners, and the drape of the flared sleeve on this view B. I used an inexpensive wool crepe from my local fabric store for this project, which turned out to be completely adequate. It's plush and a bit bouncy but drapes well, and is thin but warm. #elbetextiles #layeringpiece #transitionalpieces #coatigan #handmade #sewingproject #neutrals #diywardrobe #vacationsewing #americaninlondon #sewistsofinstagram

Here's the @elbe_textiles #SomerfieldCoat in @ladymcelroyfabrics Chloe linen-rayon blend from @stonemountainfabric in the iconic Cobra Corsage Noir. I made size E, no adjustments. I've been very into the idea of long jackets with pants, and also need a layer to throw on in overly air conditioned spaces in the summer. The colors in this print go with a lot of things in my wardrobe, the bugs and snakes keep the floral from being overly sweet - this is the fabric that broke my #lastsewiststanding2024 no buy streak (I promise to get back on the wagon!). I'll be honest, I did not enjoy sewing the very long facing, but I love how beautifully the mitered corners turned out. Labels from @intenselydistracted - her bookish "Courage, dear heart" is exactly the message I need right now. #elbetextiles #stonemountainanddaughter #ladymcelroy #cobracorsage #intenselydistractedlabels #tcsewists #isewmyownclothes

Due to a conversation I had last week, I’ve been thinking a lot about how we perceive maker skills and makers in general. Is our perception of skills determined by how the person acquired these skills? We talk about a vocation, a talent, we call people professionals or autodidacts, we use adjectives such as self-trained or call someone a hobby (fill in the blank). So clearly our language distinguishes between the way how we acquire skills and whether we get paid for what we do or not. Naturally all these words come with connotations that are sometimes more, sometimes less positive depending on who uses them and how they are being used. Thinking about it made me come up with a lot of questions that I feel can’t be answered generally. Does being trained by a professional in a professional setting outweigh skills that are acquired in a different settings, such as workshops and learning by doing? Does selling your art/craft outweigh making it for yourself and loved ones? What does it take for an autodidact to be considered a professional and is a professional necessarily talented? Ultimately I think I’ve got to answer the most pressing question that arose after the conversation I had: How comfortable am I with the terminology thrown at me when in conversation with people talking about what I do and how to respond to it. #somerfieldcoat @elbe_textiles #tfscasspant @makebytfs #memademay2024 #memademay2024day10 #memadeeveryday #mayformakers2024 #imakemyownclothes #makersofinstagram

Somerfield Coat is back in store, BABY. I'm stoked - this was the last of my patterns to be updated to fit my current size range (now up to a 60" hip) and to have separate size layers within the PDF. Existing customers from my website will have recieved an email with the updated files, but please feel free to contact me if you purchased the pattern via Etsy and I'll send you a copy. What's new? 3 new sizes Layered PDF I've also taken away view C and D. They didn't seem to be as popular as View A and B, so I thought I'd keep things more streamlined. Less paper to print now and a more condensed instruction booklet. Because of this, I've taken the price down a bit. If you haven't already snagged a copy, you can find the link to my store in my bio link tree. #somerfieldcoat #elbetextiles

My #memademay2024 posts are spotty at best - yesterday I bummed around the house in vintage shorts and an oversized vintage tee- it made me realize I need to sew some summer weather lazy/lounge clothes! Another #somerfieldcoat by @elbe_textiles in a floral velvet. My first time sewing with velvet & oh boy it was an experience. If you # ‘sewing velvet’ you get tags like ‘sewing velvet sucks’ ‘sewing velvet is the worst’ & I get why! 🤣 I have some gorgeous green silk velvet in the stash & wanted a less pricey first try. I made a few sewing velvet discoveries: 1. It creeped even with a walking foot! 2. It was easier to hand baste & sew than sew and continually unpick the seam . 3. For a novice like me, patterns with simple lines worked best. 4. I got so tired of hand sewing that I used Elmer’s glue to stabilise the hem facing & then sewed over it and it worked! Deets: I think this is a size D, I find I chose sizes in Lauren’s patterns that reflect my stats . The skirt is the #clobiasskirt ( previously posted) & the #laurencetop by #vivianshaochen is linen. I have now made 10 of these tops (7) for my daughter . #sewover50 #sewover50march #elbetextiles #sewingvelvet

Hey mates, I'm taking my Somerfield Coat pattern down for a couple of weeks while I update it! This is the last of my existing patterns that needs to be updated to fit my current size chart and get layers. YEE bloody HAW. I'll keep you all posted when it's back up. Until then, please enjoy this throwback to a shoot from many, many moons ago with the gorgeous Jasmin and @catblackphoto Jasmin is wearing the #somerfieldcoat in block printed cotton from @wovenstoriestextiles that probably no longer exists but I'm sure you'll find some equally lovely prints there now.

New colors, same slubby goodness. • We've restocked a rainbow of our tried and true Viscose Linen Noil. Slubby with a bouncy drape and cool hand, this woven fabric is a dream to wear. We especially love this fabric when made into flowy pants like the #arenitepants (33.5" to 61" hip) or lightweight dusters like the #somerfieldcoat (31" to 52" bust). • You can shop our full selection of viscose fabrics in store or online now! • [ID: bolts of colorful fabric with a slubby texture are stacked in four piles of similar shades. Even in summer I rarely leave the house without a layer. This Duster gives me the freedom to wear my lighter clothing pieces on our many cooler days. The long lines and open style of this coat act like a frame to the primary garment , so nothing is busy or interrupted. This time I made my #somerfieldcoat in the heavyweight bone linen from @wearethefabricstore . I previously posted another one in a deadstock poly crepe ( also sourced from #thefabricstore ) but thought it would be interesting to see how the Duster works in a heavier fabric. @elbe_textiles designed the pattern. Thanks Lauren for this 💎 As layering gives me the Freedom to wear lighter clothing in my changeable climate I’ve entered this Somerfield Coat for ‘Freedom February’ a #magamsewalong hosted by @blakandblanca @suestoney & @sewing_in_spain .. thank you Blanca for a great theme! #elbetextilespatterns #sewinglinen #summersewing #SewOver50 #sewover50february24 #magamfreedomfebruary #elbetextiles

I'm terrible at marketing myself, so you'll never hear from me unless I'm dropping by to give you a discount on new things. Winning. There is not much else to say but that I’m enjoying these cooler temperatures and being able to wear the #somerfieldcoat as a top layer ALL DAY. The photos were taken at a sacred heart church nearby. It was built in the late 19th century and I love the red brick façade. Some features like the column in picture two remind me of the series “Secrets of the castle” showcasing a castle being built with medieval tools. If pressed, I wouldn’t be able to pick my favourite technique, tool, craftsmanship, etc. All I know is, I would love to be part of something like this. I know I haven't been posting as much as I should on here, but I've been busy working on a lot of things for Elbe Textiles behind the scenes. Example A) here is Basil and I in my new studio space in Fremantle. It's nice having an excuse to wear clothes other than my PJ's to work. B) I've got 3 patterns left to update to become layered PDFs and add extra sizes to. I've been spacing them out between new pattern launches - currently working on the Sanders Button Up. C) Some other extra cool shit that I don't want to disclose yet because I'm scared of jinxing it but I am VERY excited about this and hopefully you will be too. If not *shakes fist menacingly* D) I also have 2 menswear patterns in mind for the next launch but I am shocking at multi tasking, so should probably focus on A, B and C for a little while before adding D to the mix. I am wearing my #somerfieldcoat in a Japanese deadstock mystery blend from @homecraft.textiles And the #peppermintbardondress that has been separated into a top and skirt and I lengthened the skirt panels - block print cottons from @wovenstoriestextiles

Where to begin with this one? It all started with a dress that @thiswaydelight made in this most wonderful #naniiro linen. I looked for the fabric for ages and finally found 4 metres of it in Switzerland. Needless to say, I bought all of it because I hadn’t made up my mind yet what I wanted to make. I absolutely adore Randeep’s choice of pattern to make the fabric shine but you know what it’s like, you can’t copy. 😆 I knew I wanted to make something big, in order to give the fabric the space it deserves and I wanted to make an item of clothing I could layer, so I would get a lot of wear out if it. So I went for the @elbe_textiles #somerfieldcoat It’s light, it’s flowy and it requires a lot of fabric. (Especially as I lengthened the pattern by 25cm. Just as a point of reference, I’m 171cm tall.) I did not interface anything in order to keep it as relaxed as possible, however, I bias bound all my seams. The fabric deserved it and it gives the coat some structure without making it look formal. I’m absolutely in love with it and so happy that all the stars aligned and I was able to find this wonderful fabric for this beautiful coat. All that’s missing is to meet up with Randeep in person. 🖤 #elbetextilespatterns #elbetextiles #naniirofabric @itoitonao #memade #memadeeveryday #imakemyclothes #imakemyownclothes #handmadewardrobe #sewsewsew #sewing #sewistsofinstagram #japaneselinen #nähenistwiezaubernkönnen #nähenistmeinyoga #nähen

Rayon & viscose aren’t fibres I have much experience with so I decided to practice with rayon from Spotlight. This dress is #mccalls7925 view C . It has a lovely shape although I prefer it worn belted or with the #somerfieldcoat by #elbetextiles ( deets in previous post). I learned to sew with the ‘Big 4’ & sewing their patterns always feels nostalgic . Deets: cut a size 14 & expanded to 16 in the waist . I did my usual mid round back and short waisted adjustment. It was also a bit long . I think I cut at least 5cm from the length (I’m 165cm). I used a light wt knit interfacing for the button placket & the fabric waved a bit. I’d be keen to know fav interfacing for rayons & viscose from others more experienced with the substrate. #mccallssewingpatterns #m7925 #modernsewing #sewover50july #sewover50 #summersewing .

#sewankarafabric23 -Jackets and Coats This silver embellished @vlisco fabric begged to be a jacket. It is a modified #somerfieldcoat . My first instinct was to put the embellished side on the inside… thanks @sewnonthemap @kissntuss @consistentlydifferentdesigns and @septemberfaden for talking me into embracing the sparkle. I just realized it never made it to the grid so I’ll post some more details soon. The fabric takes me right back to the moment I first saw the Taj Mahal… I immediately burst into tears. In May I got the wild idea that I might be able to make my own swimsuit and to my own amazement I ACTUALLY DID IT. My friend said “this is witchcraft!” and I tell ya, I’ve never felt so intensely that 🪄sewing is my superpower🪄 I knew the @helens__closet #sandpiperswimsuit would be the perfect place to start because I’ve sewn exactly *one* knit before and Helen’s instructions and blog posts are always fantastic. Swipe to see the @elbe_textiles #somerfieldcoat I made as a swim cover up. Here are the deets for sewists, because I always find other people’s mods/info so helpful! - my measurements put me between a 14/16/12 for the top and 20/18/16 for the bottoms. After reading the HC blog post for Laurie’s mods I opted to take in the bottoms to make a straight 16 and it was the right choice. The 20 at the waist was super comfy dry, but would have been way too loose once they got wet! I cut a straight 14 for the top but at the last minute took in the underbust to a 12. Combined with power mesh in the top, it makes it quite comfortable and supportive. - I ended up making a lot of adjustments to the waist. Long story short I needed to scoop out 2.5 inches from the center back and grade back to 0 at the center front. The way I figured it out was to have my partner help me pin a piece of elastic around the suit parallel to the ground; that gave me a visual for the mods I needed. So the bottoms look very uneven front to back when laid out, but when they’re on me they look straight and just right! - Oh! I also think the crotch width on this pattern is tiny so I’ll compare to other swimsuits and undies to grade out next time. - I made a size F in the #somerfieldcoat with the bell sleeves. Even though I’m a B-cup in sewing patterns (not the same as bra cup size) I sewed the C/D view so I could try princess seams for the first time. I like the added detail. If I make it again for regular clothes I’d size up because I like more ease, but just worn over a swimsuit it works. Stay tuned for a color blocked version next! 🩷💜

We went out to a rare child-free outing last night dressed to the nines. The dress is RTW (and actually also my wedding dress) but I made the coat which is an @elbetextiles #SomerfieldCoat in @merchantandmills fabric (Woolsey) that my husband brought home as a gift from his recent trip to the UK. The embroidered ribbon ties were a gift from my mother in law and were passed down to her from her mother in law! I made a straight size F with no mods. There was no time to toile. I’m pretty happy with it actually. I’m trying to make things that are going to be multi-functional in my wardrobe and this definitely fills a gap for dressier warm layers. My vision is it will mostly be worn over a t-shirt and jeans. #midnorthcoastsews #australiasews #sewistsofinstagram #memadewardrobe
