My top nine for 2020 reveals a shift in my colour palette from cool to warm colours. Previously, I’ve almost exclusively dressed in neutrals and greens. I wouldn’t say I reach for these warmer coloured garments as often as I do the others, but they get their share of love and wear. They were among my most “liked” garments, so perhaps I’m not so badly suited to earthy colours as I thought! . Heading to the garden to frog a sweater (see my stories) wearing my new Serpentine Hat, pattern by @elbe_textiles . Similar to the Sorrento bucket hat but w a larger brim. Made up in linen and both layers interfaced but the brim was still floppy so I added a wire and topstitched a spiral. Now the brim is a bit bumpy but functional. I think next time a stiffer fabric choice and heavier weight interfacing would give it a slightly more elegant look. Regardless, I’m gonna wear this a ton this summer. Worn w Tessuti Alice and Chanterelle shorts. Behold, the first dress I ever made! A recent hat-themed party gave me the chance to take out this little coordinated set. Back in 2020, when we started hearing of the first lockdowns, I ordered two sewing books to keep me company. From this, with some lovely linen-viscose blend, I attempted my first dress, the #chemisedress from #gertiesewsjiffydresses. There was much I didn’t know, including how to properly grade across sizes or why it’s a good idea to make a mockup before cutting your nice fabric! Needless to say that I had to go back for many adjustments 😂 The fit is still not perfect but I’ll never forget how proud I felt of my first dress! I made a cute hat! It's reversible! It's the #serpentinehat by @elbe_textiles and it was a super fun, quick and easy sew. I used some light denim and linen from my stash, with iron-on interfacing on both layers for stability. Don't look too closely at the topstitching🙈 I would love to make more, it was a very satisfying sew💫🤸🏼‍♀️

I'm posting my entry to #SewSkinSummer25 this evening. I've made an #AspenDress and a matching #SerpentineHat from this absolutely gorgeous floral cotton poplin from @heysewsister.co.uk The outer of the hat is a canvas from my shop @tuesdayschildfabrics I've worn my denim version of the Aspen Dress loads, and knew I would keep the added length from last time. It has worked beautifully in this lighter weight fabric, which is good because I have a third version cut out in poplin too, ready to sew! For the Serpentine Hat, I added G700 interfacing to the poplin brim pieces only. Everything else I left uninterfaced. It's sitting perfectly and has just the right amount of structure. The hat's reversible, but I think it might be too much for me with the pattern on the outside when wearing this dress. Although, @sewdisorganised was rocking an Aspen and matching hat at the Stitch Fest, maybe just should give it a go? All in all, this is ideal for the Sew Skin Summer awareness raising challenge. The dress has a collar to help keep the sun off my neck. It's a loose-fitting dress, with longer sleeves and longer skirt again to protect from the sun. The hat has a decent sized brim, and shades my face, shoulders and neck from the sun. Of course, I'll keep up with the factor 50 too! #MeMadeMay2025 #MatchingDressAndHat

May be my favorite make to date!!! Kept almost donating this fabric but then kept taking it from the donation pile. Pretty sure it was originally from @chrisjoness91 ‘ mom’s stash which makes it even more special. The fusible fleece interfacing also came from her stash. Finally decided to use it to make it a bucket hat but then had to wait a few months until Christmas sewing was complete. Inside fabric is another special fabric- it was my Aunt Lib’s from curtains she had made for their smith Mountain Lake house where I spent many special times. I’ve also made a pair of #pomonashorts out of that fabric. I love how the fleece made it extra firm and soft and I really love the quilted brim. Pattern is the #sorrentobuckethat from @elbe_textiles . I’ve made their #serpentinehat many times@but just wanted a bucket hat with regular sized brim for this one . I have finally turned my machines on- first time since May and since the big house move 🥳😭 it took a lot longer to feel the pull of making again than I thought. My time has been occupied with catching up on work, unpacking, setting up and trying to recover my senses (& find my stuff!) This Serpentine Hat only needed the crown stitched down, but I experimented with using buckram in the brim and was not sure how it would go. I think I will reshape the back brim shallower and make the crown a bit deeper. Brim is 2cm smaller all around but still hits the back of my neck and I don’t like the feel. Its a M. I also made a bumbag for work, a simplified version of the freedom hip bag. It’s pretty fun and useful. All stash for both of them. Though I did start buying fabric again this year. Sunhat made from original 1970s curtains that came with our folding caravan (swipe to see some catalogue pages from the time featuring this fabric!) I used thin wadding as well as interfacing in the brim to give it some soft structure, and took lots of care over flower placement to make sure each type of flower was featured somewhere. After I made my sister a #serpentinehat for her birthday, I was itching to make myself one too! This time, I purchased a cord and toggle for an adjustable chin strap. One mod I would make for future hats is to reinforce stiffness and rigidity by creating stitches around the hat brim at closer intervals (maybe 1 cm width). Slovenia Outfits ✨ I wish I could say this was a unique packing list but it’s essentially the same pieces I took to Maui, NYC and LA this summer (and have been wearing at home) 🙈 I like what I like! VERY HAPPY SKIRT 🌻 Seriously, this fulfills all of my naked girl summer DREAMS. It’s airy and light and so perfectly comfy that I’m still wearing it 8 hours after finishing it and don’t feel like I’m wearing pants at all which is always my goal 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Pattern: @closetcorepatterns #ClosetCoreFiore - kindly gifted Size: I made size 4 based on my 26.5” waist and 35.5” hip measurements. It fits perfectly!!! This pattern comes with 3️⃣ distinct views and I truly love each one! This is view A at the midi length, my only mod was to combine the front skirt pieces so that the front is seamless. The instructions are fantastic and it’s super beginner friendly as the booklet includes illustrated instructions on various things like grading seams, sewing French seams, understitching, etc. The 5/8” seam allowance makes French seams a breeze. The only iffy thing is that the side seams hang lower than the CF and CB at the hem, I hung and balanced the hem as they recommend but I do still notice this tendency, which is probably bc the side seams are cut on the bias. It was also hard to cut the hem accurately with the busy fabric + my projector so it could very much just be my own cutting errors. Fabric: viscose challis from @joann_stores - it’s a teeny bit sheer but so drapey and soft. THE HAT: @elbe_textiles #serpentinehat made in my recommended size, using 12oz brushed cotton twill for the outer and @riflepaperco cotton for the lining. Two quick makes for spring, both are @elbe_textiles patterns, the #buckleytote and #serpentinehat. These are easy patterns that sew up fast and I love the design, so modern! I used the beautiful @atelierbrunette gabardine fabric in tangerine for the main pattern pieces and the antique wash linen in dove for the linings. Both fabrics are available at Stash! Tulips on linen and juuusssttt enough of it for my fav simple n sweet #ashtontop pattern from @helens__closet 💜 Pattern Modifications: The L shape scwappy ($5 from the destash market) wasn’t wide enough for the front AND back cut on the fold. So I cut the back pieces separately, using the extra limb of the L shape but cut them an inch wider to overlap the centre back and leave it open like a nice easy breezy flappy flap. I love a burrito & burrito method facing, but I finished the armholes and neck with a contrast purple bias binding instead. Said bias I got 2nd hand too and I had only 1inch past my required length - how good?!? Offcuts? 🌷cut 1 x small bumbag front to go in this months drop 🌷cut into strips to make some bias binding but I think it’s too funky to go inside something so I’ll save it for another project. I've been on a hat "journey" 😂. These might be one of my favorite things to make. . . . I think I've settled on the #sorrentobuckethat in teal as my favorite overall, and teal #serpentinehat as my favorite summer sun protection for the city.
