Cornell Shirt
The Cornell Shirt is a casual, oversized design featuring drop shoulders and a grandpa collar. View A has a button up placket at the front extending past the waist, while View B has a classic button stand. The insides are finished with French seams and facings. Suitable for soft cotton shirting, lightweight/midweight washed linen, lyocell, silk noil, hemp, or any soft natural woven fabrics with good drape.

Some more memade may. These Fulford jeans by Thread Theory Designs are probably my favourite and proudest make. They are about a year old now and have worn in beautifully. Yet another entry into #magamjelousjuly I do envy people who have curated coordinated wardrobes. Here are some of my attempts to get more ‘together’ outfits. These latest makes are predominantly from patterns designed by @elbe_textiles #howerdelskirt in a cotton batik. I may omit the bottom tier next time. A great fit around the waist. #wolfetop in a cotton jersey. I like the twist detail. At first I thought the fit might be a bit snug but I think it’s because I’m used to loose tops. The instructions were 👍and easy to sew. #fremantlepants these are not a new make, but have been dyed from white to blue. Much more functional for me! My most technical sew for a while is the #cornellshirt in an organic poplin cotton. I think I have mastered the art of button plackets! I will shorten the length and button placket on my next make. A versatile layering piece. I have a few #millerwaistcoat which go well with the shirt. Thanks to @suestoney @sewing_in_spain and @hportemanteau for hosting this challenge 😊Apologies for the squinting in the photos, the winter sun was so bright 😎#elbetextiles #magamsewalong #sewover50 #sewover50july24

I don’t think I will ever tire of the super satisfying ‘cut’ sound at the end of each print 🙌🏻 It has been completely thrilling to get this new A0 pattern printing service up and running and see the orders flooding in! And totally fascinating to see what everyone is making - so many PDF patterns to explore. I’ve already purchased and printed off five patterns for myself in the past few days - #akerfeldtcoat #cornellshirt #staleytop #marlosweater #peppermintmaxidress - will share project details once I make some fabric choices (not sure which to do first!) If you need some patterns printed, head to our homepage (link in profile) to read all the details and upload your PDFs 😃

#MeMadeMay day 2. An improved photo location that doesn’t make my phone go all weird and wide-lens on me. Double @elbe_textiles (I’m a fan girl) today, repeating the #CornellShirt and a #WeilandTank in @meetmilk_fabric Derby Ribbed Jersey underneath. Repeating my floral #PomonaPants. All topped off with a #IlfordJacket in tencel from @merchantandmills. Had fun with contrasting topstitching and my first foray into embroidery on the pocket. Took my newer #BuckleyTote out too but I’ll do a photo of that another day!

Family 'me-made' clothes. This is the first time I've managed to get my menfolk to actually pose in their shirts. ....Too busy wearing them to have time for photos!! L is in a newly made @elbe_textiles #cornellshirt, whereas T's was made last year, as was P's shirt #fairfieldshirt. All made in beautiful #merchantandmills linens. The black linen was so buttery soft and fluid it felt like sewing with silk. The other two's linens were slightly stiffer and might therefore crease less easily. But as far as I am concerned, you can do no wrong with Merchant and Mills fabrics. I actually managed with both of the Cornell shirts to sew the buttons the female way, not the blokes'. That latent feminism just creeps in when it can, haha!!! I am wearing one of my favourite #matchymatchysewingclub dresses. A great summer pattern which I have made three times now. BALI 🏝️ It took Patti & Niko over a DECADE to finally tie the knot & while I was growing impatient it sure was worth the wait 😘 While in Bali we spent a few days each in Uluwatu, Ungasen and Ubud. Took my first surf lesson & can’t wait to surf again (when my big toe is less angry 🥴). Learned all about indigo dyeing and tried our hand at it at @threadsoflifebali, ate lots of good food (& didn’t get sick!), & saw some very cool wildlife! We were hoping to take a Batik class, but couldn’t fit it in so we bought supplies & will try our hand at it at home! I wasn’t able to go fabric shopping in Denpasar, so no recs for that! Not gonna pretend Bali is my *vibe* but we tried to make the most out of it & here are some pics! I had lots of overlap with Japan outfits, although I did send some things home with my brother before traveling to Bali since not everything was going to be applicable. I also wore a few dresses that I realize I don’t have pictures of but were life savers for beach days. For the wedding, the fabric I ordered two months in advance never arrived so I rummaged through my stash and made a #CheriTop and #PeppermintWrapSkirt out of a wonderful @linenlab.co.uk linen. Kevin has become *accustomed* to matching shirts and gave me a hard time for not making him a matching top. That said, he wore a #M6044 top in washed linen and #JutlandPants which matched well enough. Rest of my outfits are (kinda in order) * #EdgewaterAlly (w/ a skirt I bought in Japan) * Two #S9240 sun hoodies, and #EASaturdayShorts * Kev: another M6044 with #DIASshorts and Me: #HallonDress * #DonnyShirt and Saturday Shorts * #MDCAvaTop and #SWSHenrietta * Ally top without the knot, and #SewingIris as swim bottoms * Ally top with the #EdgewaterRanger bottoms cheeky view, rise lengthened 2.5in * #CornellShirt and #RemoteTote coming in clutch always * Kev: #ChonkySling with #SageTee and another pair of DIAS I’ll share more in stories 🥰

JAPAN 🇯🇵 Never thought I’d go to Japan, but my brothers wanted to and now I can’t believe I slept on this amazing place! Truly a WONDERFUL country to visit, and I just barely scratched the surface! I will be singing its praises indefinitely! We had 10 days and made up the itinerary as we went (I just had a flight into Tokyo and out of Osaka, hotels and experiences were booked on the fly). We spent 3 days in Tokyo, 3 days at @kakurinbo_temple outside of Fuji (the highlight of the trip!!), and 4 days in Kyoto. I hate most cities, Tokyo was overstimulating af but allowed us to each indulge our special interests, Kyoto was pretty cool & I’d def go again, but mostly I wish I spent more time exploring the wonderful nature Japan has to offer! My brothers ended up being super down for crafts, so we took an intro to Sashiko class at @canoha_sashiko, which became my travel craft for the rest of my trip! We went fabric shopping in the Nippori district, I bought knickknacks from many shops, but Nagato was my fav, & I got a few cuts of lovely fabric for a great price! We took a silk weaving class at @kyoto_traditional_textile , which was my first time using a loom! Then I found some great cotton prints for bag making at @nomuratailorhouse, and some amazing snips, hand sewing needles and a decorative pin from @misuyabari. Traveling for three weeks with just a carryon is no joke, but I think I did a good job of packing for the heat + humidity. Kind of in order, the me-mades pictured are: #s9240 sun hoodie, #peppermintwrapskirt, #donnyshirt, #sidetiedress, #mdcavatop, #peppermintbardon, #agustinatop, #arthurpants, #cornellshirt, #bobpants, #jacetop, #EASaturdayShorts, #henriettaskirt, and my life saver bags were the #minimakingbackpack, #crosstowncrescentbag and #RemoteTote . Double Gauze + Linen will never lead you astray! Also merino/nylon blend undies are the GOAT, esp when you find yourself washing undies in the sink on the reg! I deeply regretted wasting precious luggage space on my cotton + bamboo undies bc those suckers would not stay DRY 🥴 I’ll share more random fun things in stories when I’m up for it!

Finally made the @elbe_textiles #CornellShirt! Linen from @wollenberlin and buttons and thread from @selfmade_com. I learned some new techniques and am pleased that it's all French seams, so no overlocking!

Finally had some time over the holiday to get my sewing nook sorted. Still figuring out where the new photo spot will be, but so happy to finally be settling in. This one has taken a minute 😅 Wearing my @elbe_textiles #CornellShirt and elastic tiered skirt using @bethanylynne_makes blog tutorial, both in @wearethefabricstore fabric.

Herewith my current #CornellShirt. Still a work in progress, but certainly moving in the right direction. This shirt has been living rent free in my head for about a month now. Someone billed a coming pattern that spoke to just about what I want to wear as democracy comes crashing down around us. An oversized 0button up, with short sleeves and a Grandfather collar. The whole look is pretty Grandfatherly now that I look at it. 🤷♀️ I have been feeling icky about the push of capitalism on display in the Indie pattern designer world. (Joann's is a cautionary tale.) I wish all small businesses the best in all they do, but pushing out patterns with no regard for the market feels blindly commercial to me. We are all set with elastic waist pants! So when I saw a pattern being teased for a shirt like this I got frustrated by having to wait, and realized I could make what I wanted with some tweaks to a pattern I already have. I am not usually one to hack much, but.... This is a size D in the Cornell, with 1" removed from length, a 1/2" forward shoulder adjustment, the sleeves shortened to 6.5", and a shortened placket. I added abut 2" to the back pleat on the last one, but not here. Want more volume there. This what I want to wear this Summer. Voluminous linen barely touching my body. But with menswear leanings.... Functional but stylin'. My question now is can I make a matched set in two weeks, while dotting i's and crossing T's for camp? And if so, should it be linen? Or Double gauze? Thoughts? Also, should I make a pair of Arthurs with the linen I have left over from this? (Delicious cross weave from @fiddleheadartisansupply, still available on their website.) Shorts shown are the #DDGojiShorts and #PomonaShorts.

Ha! So I missed #memademay even though I wear a full me-made outfits almost exclusively. Just the idea of taking photos of myself every day is overwhelming. But I did pledge to rework some handmade items, which for some reason I didnt't wear that much. This #cornellshirt was one of them. I was very proud with myself when I finished it, especially with the cuffs which were pure perfection. But they were just a tad too short and too snug in the wrists. And so I didn't reach for the shirt as much. Finally yesterday I chopped them and now it's just awesome! So here are my today's me-mades: - Cornell shirt #cornellshirthack by #elbetextiles - Pocket skirt #peppermintpocketskirt by #peppermintpatterns and #papertheory - Fennel Fanny pack #fennelfannypack by #sarahkirsten - Chubby tote bag #chubbytotebag by #sotakpatterns I didn't make the shoes 🙃, it's my beloved #belenka #imadethis #sewingismysuperpower #memadejune #handmadeclothes #linenlove #sewist

Still self medicating with sewing. I want to make a matched set for this Summer. I believe I have hit upon the shorts part. I am digging these #DDGojiShorts that I lengthened by 2". I will note that I am in the largest size they draft, and that is not cool. But right now they work for me. Herewith 2 top options: The #SnowTopPattern in midweight linen, size 12, which was too low cut and exposed until I took 1.25" from each front piece. If this is my set piece I will go down at least one size. I always have to adjust wrap tops. Maybe I should just give up on that style...? I would also do either the sleeveless version or shorten these sleeves. Top # 2 is my latest #CornellShirt in the coolest lawn I've had in my stash for ages. I sized up to my measurements this time (D) and forgot how long it's drafted. Need to shorten it some next time. This is a loud print, louder than I am used to, but I kinda dig it. If this becomes the set top I would probably cut short sleeves. I want a button down for the Summer, but lately can't abide anything on my neck in the heat. This flat collar solves that issue.... Fabric being considered include a burgundy and navy double gauze gingham, a rust/natural shot linen, and a cherry red/tan gingham linen. Will I get this figured out and sewn up in the next month....? Who knows. I do still have another pair of these shorts (red linen) already cut out, as well as my neon pink Tie dress to sew up.... But it is giving me something to focus on other than the dumpster fire of our democracy. That is when I am not finishing up retreat admin.... 😏

#memademay day 23! a friend is having a birthday/pajama party tonight so like of course i needed to sew an outfit for it right? i’ve had this chicken print cotton/flax sitting around for a while and when i bought it the original intention was pajamas so this was the perfect push to actually use it. bias tape is my preferred method for finishing the curved hem but i fucked up and bought one that was too wide(i also thought it would be a cream color and it was a very stark white but whatever) but it’s all fine, i was in too much of a time crunch to make my own or buy more. the party is in 2 hours and i just finished it. pants- #mdcmilapants by @michelledesignco in fabric from @madewithharmony tank- #axistank by @sophie_hines top- #cornellshirt by @elbe_textiles in rayon/linen blend from @iseefabric . . . . . #memademay2025 #slowfashion #memade #memadewardrobe #indiesewing #sewing #sewist #sewistsofinstagram

Do your clothes define you? And I mean that in the most non superficial way lol. Last week I shared my #MeMadeMay pledge on $ubstack and talked about how our values show up in what we wear and how we wear it. Find my username on $ubstack to check it out or click my bio link. #memademay2025 Day 24. You can see that most of my outfits are just variations on a basic theme. Today I was heading out to the shops between rain showers. The details for these pieces are all back on my grid. I’m wearing another @paynterjacket jacket but this is one I made from the excellent @merchantandmills pattern. I wear this often. It has great details and cut. Under the jacket is a well-worn (2020?) @elbe_textiles #cornellshirt (one of my top 3 shirt patterns) in @blackbirdfabrics cotton and a pair of #closetcoremorgan jeans in denim from @corefabrics. #sewover50may #sewover70 #imakemyownclothes #memademay

#memademay day 20!!! brand new @annaallenclothing #helenejeans i just finished last night!!!! i am so fucking thrilled with them. i feel like i finally cracked the code. this is my fourth pair and the others were like okay but i was never super excited with how they fit, the butt and back thighs were always kinda saggy and had drag lines and the front crotch had some camel toe issues on me but i was never confident enough to make changes to the pattern but i finally said fuck it and made some minor adjustments that worked out pretty well. started with a size 0 and -scooped the front crotch a lil to fix the camel toe -3/4” flat seat adjustment -sewed side seams at 5/8” -substituted a curved waistband i’ve had like an unhealthy obsession with this pattern for a long time and scoured the hashtag for more hours than i can count. i’d literally never heard of rudy jude or ever seen these double front patches before seeing everyone’s copycat versions and i’m easily influenced so i had to give it a try obviously. i followed @jessilous_closet tutorial on youtube to draft the patches and i like the visual interest it brings!! honestly i might end up bleaching these because i don’t know how i feel about the dark denim and white topstitching but im gonna wear them for a couple weeks before fully deciding on that. i cannot wait to make another pair now that i have these adjustments down. okay wow that was a long caption 😮💨 . . . . . #memademay2025 #slowfashion #memade #memadewardrobe #indiesewing #sewing #sewist #sewistsofinstagram #slocantank #cornellshirt

Cornell Shirt pattern by #elbetextiles with some mods for my dad from 2023. ✂️ Bodice and sleeves lengthen 5cm, size D, which is one size down from the size chart to match his favorites shirts' measurements. One thing he doesn't love is that it's sliding backwards, so he has to pull the front of the shirt down (actually I have the same problem with my cornell shirt). Checking the IG photos for the #cornellshirt this seems like a quite common problem. Other small issues: too tight collar, but he doesn't button up anyway. I wouldn't even know how to fix it. 💥 Hot tip if you're sewing half placket: the instructions and pattern cover only women's version and doesn't even mention it. ( Men's shirts typically have buttons on the right side of the placket, while women's shirts usually have buttons on the left side). This was very disappointing as once placket is done it's done and again I see all guys in Cornell shirt with buttons on the wrong side. Still, he wears it a lot and I'm gonna make new improved version! I cut the new one with forward shoulder adjustment and mirrored placket. Exciting, let's see how is goes! #imadethis #elbetextilespatterns #handmadeshirt #sewinglinenshirt #sewistofinstagram #makersgonnamake #sewingismysuperpower #handmadeclothes

Day 13: #MeMadeMayButMakeItWeird Prompt: Dress like you’re a children’s book illustrator who lives in a converted barn In my barn this morning I sipped oat milk chai from a chipped mug while sketching a mischievous tap-dancing hedgehog named Clive, who’s working through some intergenerational trauma. He stars in my upcoming children’s book “Clive Can’t Cha-Cha Anymore (And That’s Okay).” It’s been shortlisted for the Most Emotionally Niche Animal Book at the Indie Illustrator Barn Awards™. Sure, the barn has questionable insulation and a possum I’ve named Gerald who judges my colour palettes. But what it lacks in plumbing, it makes up for in creative freedom and rustic echo acoustics when I read aloud my manuscripts to no one. Naturally, I dressed the part: ▪️ The oversized pink #cornellshirt (@elbe_textiles) (with bonus collar for narrative drama) gives “I live among rafters and refer to spiders as flatmates.” ▪️ The #adriftshift @bygraciesteel in a print cotton with sketched faces which makes it clear I’m a visual storyteller with opinions about pen nibs and emotional nuance. ▪️ A red gingham scrunchie made from leftover scraps because no fabric is ever truly wasted. ▪️ Birkenstock Bostons, because laces are a construct and I’m too busy storyboarding squirrels. P.S. If you haven’t read Clive’s breakout hit, I can only assume you’ve been emotionally stable this year. Let me know in the comments if you want the title, just know it made several librarians cry and one squirrel reevaluate their life choices. #memademay2025 #memademaybutmakeitweirdday13
