@elbe_textiles #akerfeldtcoat size C graded to D at hips. Fabric is poplin oilskin, very lightweight. Pretty straightforward pattern, keeping the pockets poufed was the most challenging part. #memade #sewist #mmthelma #fallsewing

It’s finally done! The #akerfeldtcoat by @elbe_textiles. I love the design of this coat! This is the first thing I have sewn for my husband, it also happened to be the first coat I have ever made. And to add to the challenge, he wanted it fully lined and to be made from oilskin! Both of which I have never done 😬. After many months of just looking at the fabric hoping it would make itself, I finally started it. And it actually came together pretty smoothly. There were still a couple of “oh no “ moments but fixable. The instructions for the pattern are really easy to understand and follow with great illustrations. And there are lots of tips on sewing with thicker fabric. The trickiest part was interfacing the oilskin as you can’t iron it. In hindsight it may not have needed it as it was quite thick anyway. I reached out to Lauren from @elbe_textiles for some tips on how to add lining to the pattern as it is mostly an unlined coat. She was amazing and gave me some fantastic resources which I followed. There is also a great tutorial on how to bag a coat by Tilly and the buttons that was really helpful. I was dubious that the coat could be turned inside out through the sleeve but it actually works! Details: - size 4 with no adjustments - black dry oilskin fabric from @merchantandmills - twill lining fabric from @spotlightstores - hardware from @spotlightstores - I also used upholstery thread and a size 16 sewing needle with a walking foot. (Unbezahlte Werbung) Finally I can show you the beautiful #akerfeldtcoat from @elbe_textiles . I gave it to my husband for his birthday. Doesn't it fit him perfectly! He wears size E, the fabric is a #dryoilskin from @merchantandmills . The lining is a rayon from @artgalleryfabrics . Trying to get better at sharing pics of my makes. I finished this Akerfeldt Coat by @elbe_textiles for my partner last weekend! Nick picked out the pattern, the bull denim fabric, and buttons! Pretty proud of this make, but could use an iron and I definitely regret not adding buttons to the top pocket flaps. More importantly, he loves it! “Wow. I wasn’t expecting it to be this professional looking!” 😂😏 My only mods were adding 3 inches to the length for my tall boy. #elbetextiles #akerfeldtcoat #sewistsofinstagram #memade #handmade #makeyourownclothes

Nobody asked, but I'm gonna tell you anyway. My plans for the next few weeks: 1. Update the Akerfeldt Coat pattern (adding a few more sizes and making it layered. After this, it's just the Somerfield Coat left to be updated! Huzzah). 2. Write some blog posts, make some video tutorials - any requests?? TELL ME. 3. Keep working on the two menswear patterns I have in development. One's halfway done, the other one keeps changing it's mind on what it wants to be. But I'd love to release both at once. 4. Avoid all shopping centres and shopping centre carparks. Emmanuel is wearing the #akerfeldtcoat in denim, over the top of the #daviscrossbodyvest also in denim. Don't worry, his pants aren't denim too. Photo by @catblackphoto

Hey mates, so I'm a bit all over the shop at the moment - finding it really hard to focus on what to do next. I've never been someone who can work on multiple projects at once, I've gotta pick one, finish that, then I'm allowed to move onto the next. Which isn't great as a one-woman business. Right now I'm trying to work on updates to the Page Dress (adding 2 more sizes to get it to my current size range) but I've been procrastinating heavily because after that is done I have SO many options and it's overwhelming me to the point of inactivity. I know I've said this numerous times, but I'd love to focus on menswear. It's what I love and there's a big gap in the market in this home sewing industry. In saying that - according to IG stats my audience is 96% female/female identifying. My menswear patterns do not sell anywhere near as much as my womenswear patterns. I know what I need to do to make money (release the Weiland Tank I previewed a while back/release more dresses) but that keeps steering me away from my OG plan to release cool menswear patterns. Anyway. There's not really a point to this post except it being a brain dump and keeping you guys posted on where I'm at. I don't need advice (thank you in advance for understanding). Also an excuse to post this photo of @paul.jurd.1 looking the goods in a cropped Akerfeldt Coat, worn over the Sanders Button Up. #elbetextiles #akerfeldtcoat #sandersbuttonup Photo by @catblackphoto

Can we all take a minute to admire this gorgeous Akerfeldt Coat made by Ana @theslowclothes !? I know it can be a bit intimidating to sew with these heavy duty fabrics, so there's a blog post on my website devoted to this very topic, AND a very averagely filmed YouTube video on how to sew the pockets for this coat 😬 Reposted: It’s finally done! Well, someone was waiting very patiently for this to be finished. This coat #akerfeldtcoat took me out of my sewing comfort zone with flat felled seams and using #waxedcottoncanvas from @overseasfabrics. Thankfully the instructions written by @elbe_textiles for this coat were very thorough and understandable. I did a hack on the hood by adding a tab at the back because I was asked to make it fit better and it worked. I’m pleased with how the coat turned out and grateful for a long weekend to spend on this project, just in time for the cool wet weather. #fallvibes #fallcoats #fallcoatseason #waxedjacket #waxedcotton

There are some things that I feel especially proud of sewing - and this #akerfeldtcoat would definitely be up there. This coat took me a while to sew: I knew I wanted to make my husband a raincoat with this pattern, and with all the rainy weather Sydney has been having I wanted to make the right fabric choice. I decided on the @merchantandmills dry oilskin and on our last trip to Melbourne we visited the lovely @fibresmith store in Yarraville to see their oilskins. He fell in love with this beautiful rust coloured oilskin (and so did I!). I made a size C with some mods: shortened the length by 15cm and the arms by 3cm. I like that you don’t iron this fabric, instead you finger press it. I found the pockets and the snaps tricky but I love how they look now they’re finished! My husband has said he loves the coat, and it’s had some successful outings already with all the rain about this week. @elbe_textiles #akerfeldt #merchantandmills #fibresmith #sewing #memade #isewedthis #sydneysews #diyraincoat #sewsewsew #memadeeveryday #sewistsofinstagram #oneofakind

🧵🪡🧵🪡 Next project? An #akerfeldtcoat from @elbe_textiles for my husband. I will use 2 different left over from my stash for my test. I already sew pants and a vest in these fabrics I bought for 20$ in a local store. Good for our budget!

Waxed canvas coat for my dad. I proposed the idea to him this summer and he loved the idea of a classic British field jacket. I waxed the individual pieces of fabric using beeswax, then assembled it using my Singer 301a. I used Button and Craft thread. With a few adjustments and a size 18 needle, the machine handled the heavy duty fabric and thread beautifully. The pattern is the Akerfeldt coat from Elbe Textiles. I shortened the coat and made the hand warmer pockets a little smaller to fit the proportions of the shorter coat. Great pattern with clear instructions. I used my magical Kamsnaps press for the utility snaps. The label is from @intenselydistracted , he will love the classic Star Wars reference. It was a labor of love ya'll, working with the large stiff heavy canvas. I felled some seams but it wasn't going to happen on the sleeves, I finished those seam allowances with a serger. I also made some attempts to use an iron and more wax to even out the color but eventually I just embraced the irregular look of waxed canvas. #akerfeldtcoat #elbetextiles #handmadewithlove #isew #sewing #kamsnaps

Posted by Cindy @the_sew_sew “Welp, we celebrated my husband’s 39th year last Thursday and I felt the occasion called for his own special coat since coats are one of my favorite things to make. This project was one of those projects that just fell into place. I saw the @elbe_textiles #akerfeldtcoat and instantly fell in love with the design. The search for fabric was surprisingly easy. It took one browse through @merchantandmills dry oilskin fabrics and voila! his coat was all but made! The make itself was mostly smooth since the pattern instructions were damn near perfect. The flat felled seams were a clean design solution to creating a visually pleasing unlined coat. I particularly enjoyed the pocket construction and attachment process. The toughest part was attaching the sleeves to the bodice with zero stretch material as well as making sure the inner facing attached precisely. It took a lot of patience since working with dry oilskin does not allow for many mistakes and unpicking... oh the pressure to not mess up! (Disclosure: I still had plenty of oops moments throughout 🤷🏼♀️) Prior to making the coat, I reached out to several people who had already made this coat for sizing advice including Lauren, the pattern designer, @the.nimblethimble and @sewmuchtodesign and received amazing feedback. Big thanks for the help! Knowing his style, I made Cort a size G to allow for layering while trimming 3” from the length (he prefers shorter coats). The fit is perfect and boy does he love it and all its design features. His favorite part are the large pockets! I am already planning to make this coat for myself in an ice blue dry oilskin for the spring. Pattern: #akerfeldtcoat @elbe_textiles Size: G (46/36/42 5’-10”) Fabric: camo #dryoilskin from @merchantandmills Hardware: size 24 black snaps purchased locally This make was worthy of my pink #qualityshit label by @kylieandthemachine “ #sewingmenswear

I don’t think I will ever tire of the super satisfying ‘cut’ sound at the end of each print 🙌🏻 It has been completely thrilling to get this new A0 pattern printing service up and running and see the orders flooding in! And totally fascinating to see what everyone is making - so many PDF patterns to explore. I’ve already purchased and printed off five patterns for myself in the past few days - #akerfeldtcoat #cornellshirt #staleytop #marlosweater #peppermintmaxidress - will share project details once I make some fabric choices (not sure which to do first!) If you need some patterns printed, head to our homepage (link in profile) to read all the details and upload your PDFs 😃

I had already used its fabulous 3D pockets on a different jacket, and now I finally made the whole #akerfeldtcoat - with a twist. Long story short: I got a new mattress, I looked at the old mattress cover and wondered whether it could be used as a coat lining, I remembered an IKEA fabric in my stash. Born was the idea to wax the fabric and make a coat with removable lining. All very logical, no? To my own surprise, it worked out! I made the outer 1 size larger than the lining and took inspiration from another pattern how to attach the lining - only once or twice did I end up with zipper halves inserted facing the wrong way 🤷♀️ I'm glad I managed to squeeze out the two large pockets even though I had 1m less fabric than the pattern asks for. Initially I thought I'd just skip them; don't know what I was thinking. And imagine how surprised I was to discover the lower pattern border on my front pieces just so happened to come out symmetrically! The whole thing with lining is a bit monstrous but also rather warm and windproof, and somewhat water repellent. The only items I had to buy to make this was the wax and zips for the lining (the centre zip was also part of the mattress :) Although this coat doesn't exactly look minimalist it has zero extras, just the basics needed for February in the northern hemisphere, so I'll put it up for #nofrillsfebruary . #magamsewalong #sewover50 #sewover50feb #sewyourstash @suestoney @sewing_in_spain @yogabyrdsews #sewinginberlin #berlinsews #näheninberlin #elbetextiles

For Tim’s birthday (albeit finished a little bit late), I sewed him this fun and hopefully functional water-repellant hooded coat. I was inspired to sew the @elbe_textiles #AkerfeldtCoat with its awesome 3D pockets for Tim when @stashfabricvt started carrying a beautiful line of waxed canvas fabrics. Sewing with the waxed canvas was fun, but exhausting! The fabric sews up really well, but is a challenge to manipulate through the machine. I love how the waxed canvas shows every place you touch or bend or fold it. I think it is such a cool texture and gives the coat a lot of character. I made this jacket for myself using the Akerfeldt Coat pattern because I wanted to test out how it'd go with a lining (a pattern addition on my very long to-do list). I made size C. The only alterations I made were to cut off the pattern to finish just above my hip and I slightly narrowed the shoulder because this pattern is drafted on my menswear block that has a broader shoulder. I used corduroy on the main fabric, a faux shearling fleece on the collar and a rayon for the lining, all from @spotlightstores P.S. I dropped my phone the other day which has resulted in a crack over the glass over the camera. So please get used to a lens flare on the right hand side of all future photos as I am one of those stubborn people who holds onto phones for a ridiculously long time. I'd still use my Nokia from highschool if I could.

I was planning to have a new pattern today to replace the Sorrento Bucket Hat as my pattern to raise money for charity. But then I got sick and a bunch of other things happened that meant I couldn't work as much as I'd like. So while I'm thankful to have a pretty rad boss who let's me take days off when I need, it also means nothing gets done. So next month is the new aim. In the mean time, please accept my apology in the form of a photo of a very handsome man. Couple of things: 1. A few weeks ago I accidentally deleted my entire folder of photoshoots from the last 5/6 years of business. Good job, Lauren. I'd like to blame it on Mercury being in retrograde when it happened, but really it's because I'm a big ol' dingus. Hopefully I can find the hard drive I haven't updated in a year or two for the older shoots, and salvage the rest via emails. But hey 🤷🏼♀️ it's an excuse for more shoots. 2. At the end of last year I updated the Akerfeldt Coat pattern to be a layered PDF and also added 3 more sizes. Previous customers were sent the new files and I emailed my email list to let everyone know, but then my social media battery ran out and I didn't do a post. Sorry mates. New year, new me with a resolution to post more and not delete entire catalogues of important photos. If you have purchased it in the past but didn't recieve your email, please feel free to get in touch and I'll send it to you. This also applies to Etsy customers! @paul.jurd.1 is wearing the #akerfeldtcoat in cotton canvas, layered over the #sandersbuttonup and #fremantlepants Photo by @catblackphoto These patterns are all available to download on my website now!

Continuing my trend of posting 99% done garments. This guy still needs buttons but the thought of leaving the sewing cave to go to my local fabric store during school holidays makes my insides shrivel. This is an Akerfeldt Coat that I have shortened into a jacket, so I left off the bottom level of pockets. I used the Heavy Weight Linen Blend Tweed from @wearethefabricstore The texture of the fabric is GOOD but because it's quite thick, I didn't follow my instructions that call for flat felled seams. Instead I bound them. So now I'm showing you all because it took me an extra couple of hours but it's pretty. I also left the pleat out of the chest pockets because there's no way even my industrial machine can handle those layers. #akerfeldtcoat

Much needed wardrobe necessity complete ☑️ and I’m super pleased! I really needed a warm but not heavy jacket, mainly for walking the dog so big pockets and hood necessary. I made the Akerfeld Jacket by @elbe_textiles in a (now sold out) Japanese Serge (a heavyweight, super tight twill) with our Japanese Cotton Dobby for the facings and Charcoal Check Low Volume Woven for the binding. I really like the shape of this jacket and can see using it again and again as a base. I made a few adjustments along the way, deciding to use binding instead of flat felled seams completely as personal preference and adding an inner button flap as I wanted to use larger buttons instead of snaps. The pattern is available directly from @elbe_textiles as a PDF which we can print out on our snazzy wide format printer 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 (Also on the model, a Wiksten Shift top in our Velvet Finish Wool, Eve Trousers in Hemp/Organic Cotton Denim Twill and Chevron Scarf by Ochre in their beautiful 306 Merino, Yak & Silk yarn ❤️) #akerfeldtcoat

Epic project for #sewtogetherforwinter is this jacket based on #olyashirt heavily hacked inspired by a rtw jacket. Different collar, zipper, two piece sleeves with pleats, lining with pockets, various patch pockets on the outside (one of them borrowed from #akerfeldtcoat - haven’t yet gotten around to making the whole thing), cropped with drawstring … Long periods of thinking and re-thinking, several errors and rescues, and now it’s finally finished!!
