Steele Pinafore
Elbe Textiles

Steele Pinafore
The Steele Pinafore features subtly shaped bodice panels that meet deeply scooped pockets with adjustable straps that tie at the back. Available in two views: View A has an A-line skirt and View B has a gathered skirt, both finishing below the knee. Suitable for medium weight woven fabrics with good drape like Tencel, rayon, washed linen, silk noil, and soft cottons.

This lovely corduroy has sat in my cupboard for two years waiting for just the right pattern. And then Lauren (@elbe_textiles ) released the Steele Pinafore and I knew it was meant to be 😍 For this pinafore, I sized down two sizes, cutting out size A to get a more fitted look. The only modifications I made were following @bibbity_bobbity_buttons instructions for adding a facing to the skirt openings, and shortening the skirt by 10 cm. This pattern is magic - I love how the princess seams on the bodice flow into the pocket seams on the skirt, the bow on the back, and of course the giant pockets themselves. Worn with a rowan bodysuit I made to match (more details in a later post) #SteelePinafore #ElbeTextilesPatterns #MNRowan #MNRowanBodySuit #megannielsenpatterns #CanberraSews #sewcbr

Finally got some photos of my finished #steelepinafore from @elbe_textiles As someone who is not a fan of summer clothing, this pinafore has been great in warm weather. It's easy to pop on over a shirt and not overheat. It also has giant pockets for treasures and a super cute tie back detail. I've already got a good amount of wear out of it. It's made out of a linen blend, that was originally white (last pic). I dyed it using the color Raven/200. Fabric and dye are both from @dharmatradingco I made zero fit changes and opted to let the oversized fit of this pinafore do it's thing. I added 5 inches to the skirt, a hem facing and sewed up the sides of the skirt about 3" more than the pattern calls for. I also added length to the straps because....more bow is always the answer. If you want a more in depth review I posted one on @patternreview ▪️ ▪️ ▪️ ▪️ ▪️ ▪️ #sewistsofinstagram #sewing #memademade #slowfashion

Crocheted strawberries for our extremely brief foray to the Fayetteville Strawberry Festival last weekend (which got interrupted by a major thunderstorm). I put pin-backs on these but decided to bobby-pin them into my hair instead. Learning to crochet has been fun - it’s not my favorite craft but I do see how handy it can be when you need to whip up a handful of strawberries the morning of a festival or something like that, as one does. Also wearing my #steelepinafore dress

I have other things I need to share, but I am too excited about what I finished last night. My second #steelepinafore by @elbe_textiles took me about three weekends to make and I used the tumbled cross hatch linen cotton from @matchymatchysewingclub in cove blue. I was able to find matching thread from @kaimukidrygoods (and splurged on some cute buttons). It is all #handstitched of course and I learned how to do an overlocking stitch by hand to finish the edges so I guess we will see how they hold up. I had similar problems with the button loops, closures/shields, and length - I am not sure how that would change if I used a machine. Oh, and I still need to find more things to wear as an undershirt that isn't too cumbersome. Will make again in the future, but just not right now because I have lots of other things to finish up.

New top + well loved dress Top: #dawsontop pattern from @helens__closet sewn out of a clearance stretch mesh from @joann_stores in size 20 with the mock neck and half sleeve options. The Dawson has been a #triedandtruepattern for me for a while! I can always count on it! Dress: #steelepinafore pattern from @elbe_textiles out of fabric from @madewithharmony with details on an older post on the grid. I’m wearing it here with about 8” of ease which makes for a very comfortable outfit! #sewistsofinstagram #slowfashion #isewmyownclothes #madewithharmony

The thing I loved most about this make was that I made the dress using white corduroy fabric, white cotton for the lining and 100% cotton white thread, and then dyed it all at the end. I used Rit liquid dye and combined the Navy and Denim Blue colours and got this awesome blue. This is my second Steele Pinafore so I knew I could skip the side buttons and still be able to get it on over my head. Just because I’m lazy. The #SteelePinafore I am literally catching up on last summer’s sewing. This lovely thrifted linen was generously shared by Dorota @librarianka last summer and she made a beautiful sundress and hat out of her half. And I made… plans. I had the pattern but no time. This year, still not a lot of time, I was determined to make it as I really needed another sundress👉. #sewwhatyouneedjune and I jammed it into my busy summer schedule. I was very much spurred on by the week long heat wave we are at the end of, where the humidity melts one into a puddle. I love this pattern! I only made one mod and that was to add 4 inches to the length. (I’m 5’8” for reference) And I sewed up the side seams as many others have done. So I guess that’s technically two. I’ve never had any fun labels before so I had to use this one from the goody bag from #torontofrocktails On a roll, I also jammed another #sewwhatyouneedjune item into the mix. ( I know I could make this into another post but I’m jamming it all into one. And possibly seeing how many times I can use “jamming “ in this post) I had a purse that kept falling apart at the seams and at the joints of the straps. I mended it more than once and then one of the 3 zippers broke ( it was jammed! 😉) and that was that. I made a new purse, slightly larger, with leftover denim and reused the two remaining zippers and straps. I lined it with a little print that had been plopped into one of my indigo buckets at one point. Happy Me Made May for all who celebrate! Me Made May is a month long event in the online sewing community where we share outfits every day from the clothes that we made. Some people will post lots, some a few. It differs from person to person. I've been pretty good the past few years about posting most days and I'll try to do the same this year. Mostly, for me, it's just encouragement to actually get dressed in the morning and not throw on the same pair of jeans with a baggy t-shirt that I've been wearing the past few months. I'll probably share a few things that I made that I haven't posted about yet, but I don't foresee me making much, if anything new. We'll see how the month goes! Spring has been a tease where I’m at. It warms, the snow melts, then it snows again. Thankfully the freezer temps have held off. With all that I’ve found time to make my fourth #steelepinafore using linen and wool this time. I added some cute pocket detail, and trim in the back with hand embroidered asters on the bodice. I love this pattern and plan to make atleast one more for summer. Otherwise that I’ve been working on more kitchen towels that will be available at the #homesteadingconference at the end of June here in CDA. These are twill with a basket weave, again a pattern I’ve come to enjoy making.

Been sewing. This is the #steelepinafore from @elbe_textiles made from a lovely linen tablecloth I got at an estate sale. It has a few ghostly stains of peach cobbler from long ago and some holes I will probably never mend but that’s part of the charm! This is a good pattern but a word of warning- if you’re between sizes, size down and definitely absolutely add those “optional” extra buttons and also probably sew the skirt together even higher than the pattern calls for. You can see I still have a fiddly little gap in just the place you don’t want one! Buttons are mismatched from deep in the stash, Nikes from the Battlefield Mall in 2002, these shoes are older than I was when I bought them 😵💫😵💫😵💫

Delayed posting of my Christmas dress and my Honey’s matching Christmas shirt! ♥️ Believe it or not, Frank chose this festive fabric and it was his idea to coordinate as well! We had fun with these at some family get togethers over the holidays. The fabric is a quilting cotton with some sort of gold metallic paint (?) that wreaked havoc with my iron 😋 My dress is the @Elbe_Textiles #SteelePinafore with a modification at the side button closure (smaller opening and three buttons). I cut the skirt on the bias in an attempt to give it more drape, which didn’t really work 🙃 I used a gold metallic thread in my stash for mine, but a ordinary thread for Frank’s. Frank’s shirt is another Woven Polo Shirt (pattern from @WardrobeByMePatterns ) I am really stoked about my pattern matching on that pocket ~ swipe for close-ups. If you keep swiping, you will see something that rarely happens ~ me wearing a completely RTW outfit! 😏 Everything is ancient except the Gudrun Sjõden cardigan which was a Christmas gift from my Honey and I love it! Perfect summer dress 👗 This is a mash up of a few patterns 🧵 🪡 For the bodice I used the #lockhartdress by @helens__closet with the back from #darladress by @truebias I love the look of double spaghetti straps so these are another modification. For the skirt I used the #steelepinafore by @elbe_textiles and elasticated the back of the skirt like the Darla pattern. The fabric is lovely drapey navy rayon from @spotlightstores I tried a few different methods for the spaghetti straps or rolleau straps. They were very frustrating to make. The most foolproof method for me was using a bobby pin to turn the straps.

I have been planning this #steelepinafore for so long that I barely believe I’m wearing it! I made many of the same changes as @laura.wolfgang to be able to wear this with or without an under layer, which mostly included sewing higher up the skirt and raising the bodice height. I also flattened the neckline because I’m not a huge fan of scoop necks on dresses! It’s the perfect summer to fall transitional piece, and look at those leaves changing! This is a size C, View B in @blackbirdfabrics handwoven cotton. This fabric is pretty thin, so I’d consider fully lining a future project made with it. Worn with a #riseturtleneck (which I have many of and live in during cold weather). This was an easy and hiccup-free project to break my small sewing hiatus! #slowsewing #sewingclothes #sewing #imadethis #sewistsofinstagram #handmadewardrobe #memadeeveryday #slowfashion #elbetextiles #imakemyclothes #imakemyownclothes #memade #sewingdresses #sewmyownclothes #handmadeclothing #sewistofinstagram #selfsewnwardrobe #selfsewn #makeitsewcial #wearhandmade #indiesewing #sewcialists #bfhandwoven #bfcotton #blackbirdfabrics #pinaforedress #cottagecorefashion #cottagecorestyle

This #steelepinafore by @elbetextiles was #handstitched from old futon covers. Thanks to my favorite print shop, I had printed and cut my size out in March thinking I was going to sew this in time for my trip to Virginia. Oh, I was so arrogantly confident. I didn't finish this until about August after working steadily on it for a couple of weekends. I love it. The print is kind of overwhelming for me and not in a colorway that I see in the rest of my closet so it's hard to find an appropriate undershirt for, but I really am enjoying the fit so far. I should hem it to be more appropriate for my height, but the View B skirt is just perfect for twirling. The button loops are also kind of chunky so the buttons aren't really functioning as a way to help myself in and out of the pinafore, but that's ok because I sewed shut the little opening below it that other people have been adding closure shields to. The enormous pockets are great for chore days and for not carrying around a bag. Will make it again very soon.

My latest sewing make is the Steel Pinafore by @elbe_textiles, an Australian sewing pattern designer. This is the second time I've made this pattern. The fabric is "girl power" cotton duck from @spotlightstores I made a size D (b cup), and used leftover black mystery fabric for the lining. I finished this just in time to wear to an art gallery this evening. My daughter's artwork is part of an exhibition at the Lockyer Valley Regional Art Gallery. It's definitely an art gallery type garment! #steelepinafore #elbetextiles #isewmyownclothes #sewistsofinstagram #sewingismysuperpower

a little commotion for the back of the dress ✨ I was inspired by @leila.makes and @laura.wolfgang versions of the #steelepinafore to turn it into a stand alone dress. #MeMadeMay2025 day 3: pardon my extreme rbf. I have a two take max on videos and if I still can see the hem of my shirt through my pinafore or my hair looks shitty or I have a pissy facial expression, well so be it! It was surprisingly cold today and I didn’t realize until I was already out dog walking but really these sleeves are not sweater friendly. I hate doing anything on Saturdays because I am the queen of burn out but I managed to get through necessary chores today, including bathing my very geriatric cat, Henrietta. This is the @annaallenclothing #antheablouse and the @elbe_textiles #steelepinafore both in linen from @galafabrics. Any other Anne of Green Gables fans out there who will absolutely love a puff sleeve always? #MeMadeMay

#memademay2025. #steelepinafore that I think I made in 2022 ?? I’ve got no idea, keep zero notes and often have to reply on @seamsobsessed for clues about any adjustments I’ve made ( who doesn’t love trolling they 1000’s of voice notes ) I wear it more in winter with cardigans and jumpers than I do I. Spring. This Brussels linen made the bows sit very stiff so I did big chunky buttons instead.

I am sad, but I’m getting dressed. A mantra for a hard day. #hepburnturtleneck @itchtostitch and #steelepinafore @elbe_textiles with my beloved Frye boots that I found at the thrift store last year. Wearing things I’ve made myself feels comforting and also like armor for the world. Colors and textures I like, the memory of making things with my own two hands. The distraction of picking out what I want to hang on my body. All of it quite important to my heart today. They sang this hymn for communion today and I cried Lord of all hopefulness, Lord of all joy Who’s trust, ever child like, no cares can destroy, Be there at our waking, and give us we pray, Your bliss in our hearts Lord, at the break of the day.

For about ten years now I have been on the hunt for the perfect pinafore pattern, and by god I think @elbe_textiles has done it with their excellent #steelepinafore. The Steele is probably the first pattern I ever coveted from @elbe_textiles, so it’s a little surprising that it’s the third - after the Homme Jumpsuit and the Reznor Skirt - that I’ve purchased and sewn. It does mean that I can say with some confidence that Elbe’s patterns and grading are consistently among the best fitting I’ve sewn. Available up to a 60” hip, and in both a B-cup or a C/D cup, the Steele features the unique take on a classic style that Elbe is known for. It has a shaped, panelled, fully lined bodice that ensures you don’t get any of the gaping at the sides that’s so prevalent in pinafore styles - yes, even on a G cup (I made the larger cup size version, and didn’t bother with an FBA). The seams on the bodice match up with the seams on the a-line skirt (either gathered or straight), and the scooped sides - fastened with a pair of dainty button-loops - mimics the satisfyingly voluminous pockets. My favourite feature is the back, where the adjustable ties can be fastened in a bow. The whole bodice is fully lined, and the instructions give you the yardage requirements to make it with a lining fabric, but I wasn’t sure if the shaping on the bodice would conceal it properly (it turns out: yes) so I just used the same fabric. I also naively assumed that stabiliser was the same as interfacing, and only realised my error after I’d begun the project, and by that time I was too deep to hit pause and go out to the shops to buy some. The interfacing worked absolutely fine, and to be honest I’m not 100% sure why you’d use water soluble stabiliser on a seam anyway (to reinforce it? Though doesn’t that reinforcement disappear as soon you wash the garment?) The fabric is an incredible textured linen that I was gifted as a @wearethefabricstore ambassador, and it’s the perfect choice for this pattern. Rustic but soft, with a weight that pulls the volume of the skirt into soft folds, and a deep inky black hue. #steelepinaforeplus #elbetextilespatterns #elbetextilessteelepinafore

This bag has been a long time in the making! It’s completely made from scrap fabric, and even embroidery thread remnants 😊 After seeing similar little hand quilted pieces done by @MorrisSews and @SueStoney ~ I wanted to try it out. It’s just the type of hand stitching I like to do when traveling or watching a show with my Honey! I did four quilted pieces in ten-inch squares and used them for a #DumplingBag by @Motif_Studio_Patterns ~ so fun! This is the large size, and it did end up having a capacity I didn’t expect! I added inside pockets along each of the four sides (swipe for close-ups), and also added a plastic mesh piece to the bottom inside the lining to give the bag more structure. I was hoping to have it done in time for our recent vacation, to hold my handwork projects ~ but I was too slow! I’ll be ready for all our holiday travel though 🤗 Despite not having my cute bag, we had a wonderful time on our trip. This state park has it all, our bike trails, beaches, pine forests, grasslands, and my favorite ~ great oaks draped with Spanish moss. 🥰🥰🥰 Keep swiping if you would like to see a few photos from our trip ~ but watch out for the alligators! 😉 (Wearing: #SteelePinafore @Elbe_Textiles and a #RaeDress (shortened to a top) @TessutiPatterns ) 🌼🌸🌼🌸🌼🌸🌼🌸🌼🌸🌼 #SewOver50 #SO50Dresses #SO50Floral #MotifDumplingBag #MSDumplingBag #SO50Bags #SewOver50November24 🌸🌼🌸🌼🌸🌼🌸🌼🌸🌼🌸

Uansett: hva tror dere om denne her? Jeg er usikker, men har gått med den et par timer nå og den vokser på meg.
