Finally finished Mr Lolabear's hoodie. I've been working on this for a while, mainly because I messed it up by not interfacing the eyelets which I knew was a mistake. For no particular reason I avoid interfacing even though it is absolutely vital and skipping it never ends well. Luckily it was easily solved. #OkayMeMadeMay day 7: pattern hack/modified pattern. I do hack a lot of things... Here is my #SmithHoodie (pattern by @elbe_textiles) that I turned into a Tibi knockoff. No hood, cocoon back with O ring detail, two piece sleeves to add elbow slits, drop sleeve with slightly forward shoulder seams. Skirt is #TeagueDress hacked into a woven skirt instead of knit. Love the lace. Also made my earrings! I learned how to do brick stitch and now I want to make a ton of these, I love learning new things. #ThanksIMadeIt

Some better shots of this self-drafted sweatshirt I made yesterday. I used the @elbe_textiles #SmithHoodie as the base for this, and obviously altered that significantly. I added a cocoon shape to the back, and wrapped the side seam around from the armpit to the front. I cut the sleeve pattern in two, with the narrower piece for the front of the sleeve and the wider part for the back, where I added faced slits at the elbow. I added an inch or so to the back shoulder and took the same distance away from the front so the shoulder seam sits slightly forward. I also changed the sleeves from set in to drop. And I added a metal O-ring to the back. I cut cuffs and neckline out of matching ribbing and drafted a hem that I cut so the seams matched the side seams. I didn't think there were that many changes but now that I write it out, there were a lot! I've been thinking about this for quite a while, probably a year or so? Just trying to make sure I got all the details I liked from my inspiration piece (a tibi sweatshirt). That version has the front and front sleeves as one piece, but my fabric wasn't wide enough. I like that this is a "basic" sweatshirt that is kind of cooler than a basic. The fabric is a cotton french terry so this should be good for a large chunk of the year, not as hot as it would have been in fleece. But maybe I'll make another one. Worn with some Virginia Leggings that are a bit ratty but it's Sunday so whatever.

Autumn day out with a couple of homemade things.  I've been sewing shirts recently and I suspect I'll make a few more before I'm happy with the pattern. But the weather has made me realise that I'm lacking some homemade gear in the outerwear department, so hopefully I'll be picking up some waxed cotton soon. I haven't posted an in-progress project to the grid for a while, which seems a shame since the pleasure of sewing for me continues to be seeing how an assortment of flat shapes suddenly transforms into clothing. So here are a few mid-transformation components of what may or may not become a fully wearable hoodie. I've wanted to make a classic sportswear hoodie for quite a while. I always associate these with weighty knit fabrics, and so I was delighted to find this grey sweatshirt material, which aptly fits the brief. It's a UK-made, heavyweight (490gsm) french terry cotton from @neotrims. The manufacturer's website notes that the fabric is designed after a style of heritage American fabric, which was all the excuse I needed to go and read about vintage knit machines. Despite the weight, this is incredibly soft, but multiple layers of it do challenge my home machine. The pattern is the #smithhoodie by @elbe_textiles . As always with Elbe patterns, the design is spot on and the instructions very clear. I've made a few edits to the pattern, such as using rib rather than elastic, shortening by 3cm, and double layering the hood. I may also shorten the arms by a cm or two. Will this turn out to be a wearable garment in a few weeks? Who knows! Here she is!! 😍😍 My @elbe_textiles #smithhoodie is complete! Pictures wearing this coming soon (like post more coffee and shower - it’s been a long week… 🤣). I am super duper proud of the fussy cutting/pattern matching I was able to do with my #romaquilt (pattern by @quiltdstudios). The front pocket was really the only piece that I couldn’t match up, so I flipped it and am showing off the beautiful birds on the backing (then I had to flip the hood to match too because that is what we do. 🤷🏼‍♀️🤣). Again, this pattern is written for stretchy materials, so I did make some adjustments that were moderately successful. I widened the neck opening (I need to widen my next one a little more, it *barely* and I mean BARELY fits over my large melon… 🤣). I shortened the sleeves and length a bit to accommodate the ribbing on the cuffs and hem (I could have shortened them a bit more). This is my first time playing with ribbing and I probably just need more practice, but it seriously gave me fits. My serger gave up on me and I ended up having to zigzag it on with my Bernina - I will need to recover a bit before I try this again. 😅 BUT. I love the contrast of the dusty rose and I think the ribbing gives it a nice, finished look, I’m so glad I tried it. Okay. Last minute #quiltcon outfit underway. Wish me luck. 😳 I’ve been seeing all these fun hoodies made out of vintage quilts pop up, and have been super excited to try to make one myself. I’m using the #smithhoodie pattern by @elbe_textiles, Sizing it up a bit and widening the neck to account for the non-stretch fabrics I’ll be using. Praying it works. 🙏🤣 I’m using my beautiful #romaquilt I tested for @quiltdstudios gosh, almost two years ago now. I used #essexlinen in Nutmeg and Kona Oyster. It’s backed in this beautiful bird print from the #agfgloria collection. It was gorgeously quilted by @featherbed_quilting and has been sitting just waiting for binding, way longer than I’d like to admit. 😬 This project is saving this one from the #wipclosetofshame AND makes one less quilt I have to bind, win/win if it works? Little pup is not happy I am cutting out #smithhoodie number 2 instead of paying attention to her. I have been searching for an old-school hoodie pattern for a while now, so when Elbe textiles came out with the Smith hoodie. I jumped right on it. I made my first one out of some squishy, Blackbird Fabrics, bamboo fleece. Now I am currently cutting out number two in a zip version for my eldest. I will post more pics and details as soon as I am done with the second. Hey mates, as you may know I am a terrible multi tasker. I've been working on two patterns lately with the intention of releasing them around the same time. BUT I reckon the Smith Hoodie is much closer to completion so I'm going to focus on getting that out, then focus on the crossbody bag/belt! Because I want the latter to be truly unisex, I need to draft 3 separate blocks for different body shapes and I want to make sure I don't rush this 😊 In the meantime, start looking for sweater knits because I think this hoodie will be a pretty sweet Christmas present.
