Gibbons Slip Dress
This bias cut slip dress comes with multiple neckline, back and length options. View A has a deep V front with gathered bust, V cut back and calf length. View B is a mini dress with a subtle V neck, gathered bust, and optional buttons at center front. The pattern is cut on the bias to gently mold to the body and is available with B cup and C/D cup options.

Another #GibbonsSlipDress, this time with an added ruffle at the hem. I took my time with the finishes on this one as it is quite sheer, and I think it paid off! All of the sewing details are in my previous post, but please ask if you've got any questions - the last pic is how I'll mostly style it! @elbe_textiles

I made the @elbe_textiles Gibbons Slip Dress! I'd been looking for an easy sew, and this lovely 90s vibe slip fit the bill perfectly. It comes with a couple of necklines and a couple of lengths - which I totally ignored and chopped into a mini dress! This has been such an easy piece to fit into my wardrobe - as long as Scotland co-operates with the sunshine. The sewing pattern is excellent: well drafted, clear, and has all those little tricks to get a simple dress like this to look good - if you're an adventurous beginner with a couple of projects under your belt, this would be a great pattern! Dresses like this all hang on the fabric, so choose the drapiest, most liquid fabric you can, and sew slowly with a sharp needle, and tissue paper under your fabric. Also, I used strips of iron on interfacing as seam tape instead of stay stitching, and I swear by it. I immediately sewed another one in white cotton, which I will share as soon as I take some nice photos in it! #GibbonsSlipDress

I finally finished my first sewing project in two years, and it feels amazing! This is the #gibbonsslipdress by @elbe_textiles, completely inspired by @clairemadeit. I mixed views, as she did: the front is view B, while the back and the rest of the front are view A, size C. One of my favorite things about this dress is its versatility, it can be worn open at the front or tied up. The process (and result!) definitely has its imperfections, even if the photos don’t quite show them. Still, I’m really proud: not just of the dress itself, but of having finished something creative, just for me, after such a long sewing break and in the tiny pockets of time life allowed.

I did not post nearly enough of the photos from this shoot I did with @sophie.sews and @lukejohnsonpix Please admire Sophie wearing the Gibbons Slip Dress in a viscose sandwash twill from @wearethefabricstore and the Somerfield Coat in a printed silk, also from The Fabric Store. This coat sample is available to purchase on my Etsy store - along with a bunch of others. So head on over to my bio if you're keen for a one off garment- there's a link there that will take you to the shop. Orrrr if you want to make your own- go on then, I sell the patterns too 😏 #gibbonsslipdress #somerfieldcoat #sewingpattern

My 2nd version of the Gibbons slip dress 💚 I definitely get more boob coverage by switching to the View B bodice which features a subtly shaped V neckline. I added ties after seeing the version by @clairemadeit instead of the standard button loops. Love how it turned out. Made a size F graded to G at the hips. this is the #gibbonsslipdress from @elbe_textiles made in the Brussels washed linen/viscose from @stonemountainfabric. I made a 42 based on my measurements. The bust seemed high on my toile so I lengthened the top pieces about 1cm only to end up shortening from the shoulder seams after I put it together. I had never made a bias dress before but this wasn’t so bad.

My Gibbons Slip Dress Review 👇🏾 - Pattern is by @elbe_textiles - I made size F graded to G at hips (I’m currently 42”, 35”, 45”) - For this dress I used: View A front, bodice, length, & View B back with darts - Can’t remember fabric content sadly but it’s from @marshallfabricscgy - I took an extra inch off each side of the bodice so I guess I may have gotten away with going a size down - I’m considering taking half an inch off the straps too (to raise the neckline for this bodice view) - I’m going to switch out the bodice in my next version to View B for a little more boob coverage. - Pattern is drafted for 5’7 height but I didn’t mind the length on me (5’4) - Overall, relatively easy sew for a dress. The hardest part was honestly cutting it out since it’s on the bias and I used a projector. I’ll be tracing the pattern pieces out on paper for an easier process. - Love the way it hangs on my body so I’m determined to get a “close to perfect” version for myself - All this info and a bit more can be found on my @threadloop.app account too 💕 #gibbonsslipdress #elbetextiles #ilovetosew

⭐️ Patron : Gibbons Slip Dress @elbe_textiles ⭐️ Tissu : Viscose fleurs fond rouge @mylittlecoupon (référence DIM104 si ça vous intéresse) #couture #elbetextiles #mylittlecoupon #gibbonsslipdress #inspirationrouje #jecoudsmagarderobe #jeportescequejecouds

Heading to a wedding in my #memade #gibbonsslipdress by @elbe_textiles in sand-washed silk from @moodfabrics ❤️ I originally wanted to make the deep v neck view but thought that it might be tricky to wear once I stop nursing & my shape changes. Kept the length and the back as a v-neck! With the bonus contrasting decorative hem that I hacked as high-low shape - because I wanted to add some funky detail!

A full summer me-made fit. For the top made a size C based only on my bust measurement and measured out only 6 inches of the skirt to mod this into a shirt. I also added ties on the back from where the cups meet the front panel. I am decently happy with how this came out but it’s not quite fitting how I want. This is my second time making this pattern, and I thought the waist ties might address some of the looseness but they didn’t quite do what I wanted. I love the pattern and neckline and will be making it again maybe in a size B instead. For the shorts, I made a size 8 and dropped the waist 1” along the top (not at the lengthen shorten line) to maintain a little more room in the waist. Really happy with these but would maybe drop the waist another 1/2”. #gibbonsslipdress #helenejeans

Here with another brown linen co-ord set I made for a recent work trip to Thailand. I sewed an all-linen capsule wardrobe before I left in preparation for intense heat and humidity. I noticed the #st4s25 #CoordSets challenge was underway, when I returned and am lousy and posting, but I’m doing it with less than an hour to spare before the deadline. Here’s an unusual pairing. I started with the fabulous #gibbonsslipdress by @elbe_textiles (100% inspired by the amazing @sewimpatient ). I wanted an option to cover my shoulders, as required to enter Buddhist temples, and squeezed out a #kalleshirtdress by the great designers @closetcorepatterns. I used snaps to make it more jacket-y and was sooooo short on fabric that I not only created a center back seam, but included the selvege in that seam as is evident if you scroll. Thanks to @sewing_in_spain and @jenleggsews. I will try to get a tripod and a set up for photos in situ because fit is the real challenge in sewing… Why brown? I had it in stash, likely purchased from @stonemountainfabric, my local shop. #sewover50

En bref suis très contente du résultat, j’ai fini les bords avec un biais jaune pâle, la couleur est superbe, et le lin de belle qualité. living my very best tomato girl summer in the @elbe_textiles #gibbonsslipdress made from one of the cutest fabrics to ever exist by @lyricalfabrics 🍅 when i first saw @lyricalfabrics post about this fabric i literally set an alarm to buy it! also had to copy them and make the gibbons dress because i couldn’t stop thinking about it when i saw their post! i used the viscose linen slub from the collection i made view b in the front and back and used view a for the length. luckily i’m short because this pattern only fit on my fabric after i shortened it by 4 inches! i made a size d in the c/d cup graded to a size e at the hips! now i just have to wait for the tomatoes in my garden to actually turn red! 😁

This is how I think this slip dress should be styled, with no slip, nude underwear: hot weather perfection. Is it too naked, though? The fabric is pretty sheer 😅 Sewing details: •Pattern: @elbe_textiles #GibbonsSlipDress •Fabric: White textured cotton voile from my last trip to Melbourne •Size: I made a size 4 and used the shorter length with the deeper neckline both front and back, which fit pretty much perfectly. My measurements are bust 35", waist 30", hip 37". I shortened the body by about 2 cm, but that is an adjustment I do to every pattern I make because I have a shorter torso. •Alterations: I cut the length to just above my knee, then took a rectangle that was (length from that line to the ground) x (the whole width of the fabric), hemmed it on the short sides and the bottom, and then gathered it on to the bottom of the dress. • Construction: I used very fine French seams everywhere and used a narrower binding than the pattern called for to keep everything looking as light as possible. I also use light interfacing tape instead of stay stitching along the neckline, sleeves, and the top of the front body piece to help it keep shape - I find this works better as sometimes even staystitching light fabrics can stretch them. I also put this through the machine with tissue paper underneath the fabric because my machine wasn't loving the change in fabric density in the sheer stripes. Love this pattern, I'm planning another one of these in a red viscose for a pal's wedding later in the year!

newest make: the #gibbonsslipdress in this beautiful chocolate linen! had to wear her out for a winery outing 🍇 i made view a in size b 🪡 i almost always need to shorten the shoulder seam when making tops/dresses when using a pattern, but this time i added ties at the back for a better fit and it worked well— plus, i feel like it’s such a cute addition to the dress. i’m definitely going to be wearing this dress a lot this summer, and want to make another in a mini version :)

✨ Introducing the most confortable dress ever : no zip, no buttons, the so called slip one ! This is the @elbe_textiles #gibbonsslipdress ; discovered thanks to @amysewsandknits and @thread.ringer beautiful versions. ✨ I cut the view A, size B & B cup. Small mods I’ve made : shortened the shoulder seam 1 cm (*resp 2 for the linen version) on both front and back and removed 1 cm (*) to the underarms to keep the overall ease. ✨ Quick sewing for a lovely and comfy result ! Let you guess which one is my fav ☺️ And wish you a very nice week 🫶🏻 #slowsewing #handmadewardobe #slipdress #elbetextiles #linendress #mylittlecoupon #batikou #handmade #summerdress #silkdress #cousumain

I'm not big on checking my analytics - so luckily Me Made May is a pretty good way indicator of what patterns of mine are doing the best. This latest MMM told me that you guys are feeling the Gibbons Slip Dress. I can see why - everyone who posted a photo of themselves wearing the dress looked GOOD. Finished my #gibbonsslipdress today. Hemmed and some cording added. Made a huge mistake of not cutting the back and front perpendicular to each other, won’t do that again. The corkscrewing of the fabric isn’t too bad so it is wearable. Added loops to both sides of the bodice, second set added by hand when I realised that buttons weren’t going to look right this time. I do like the laced up look. Have just enough fabric for a blouse. Absolutely love this viscose satin from #fabworks

May 31st — celebratory leopard print!!!! Went out to drinks in my fabulous #gibbonsslipdress that it was finally warm enough to wear. This was a toile, but it’s my favorite. Dress: #gibbonsslipdress by @elbe_textiles in a size D, in grey/white leopard print viscose. No modifications, although on my next version I might change the location of the back darts. #memademay 🐆

Do you know that feeling when you have a very clear idea of what to make with a piece of fabric that you bought specifically for that pattern and when you are about to cut it out an idea crosses your mind and you end up making something completely different? I am sure it’s not just me experiencing this creative phenomenon also known as “impulsive sewing” This dress is the result of that. I bought the gorgeous linen with @sew_sister with the idea of making a pair of pants because finding bottom weight suitable linen is hard and when you do, you have to make a pair. I had my fabric layout and my pattern over it and as I reached for the scissors the idea struck me and had to change curse. I know it sounds dramatic but if someone thinks that sewing is a relaxing hobby I would ask them to think twice because my experience is that is filled with excitement and unexpected turns. • Dress: #gibbonsslipdress by @elbe_textiles (up to B:58.5; W:50; H:60.2) size I at the bust grading to size M at the hips. This is my fourth Gibbons so I cut a slight A silhouette when cutting the skirt. I really love the end result and is extra fun to wear! I had a vision, about 3/4 of the way through thought I’d majorly ballsed up, but pushed through and now I want a million striped bias cut dresses. I am not one for making a toile (I know, slapped wrists) but I knew this would be worth doing because this is the style of dress I could never in my dreams get to fit in ready to wear. So I toiled, and despite fitting almost exactly the measurements of the size 4 D cup view, I needed a bit of extra length and some pinching out of the armscye. The aforementioned balls up was merely a panic that I’d actually cut out the new pattern piece (reader, I had, thank f**k) This is the @elbe_textiles #gibbonsslipdress in a linen from @newcrafthouse I cut View A in the length and back, but B for the bodice and added rouleau ties for interest and a bit of modesty. I’m off to eye up more striped linen as this now feels like my new summer personality… #elbetextiles #sewyourown #makeyourownfashion #makeyourownclothes #newcrafthouse #sewing #handmadeclothes

went big for my first wedding in a while, and decided to use this amazing viscose challis from @blackbirdfabrics to make the @elbe_textiles #gibbonsslipdress 🌞🌙✨ I loooove this pattern (my second time making), and made size 6 with a SBA (measurements put me between 4-6) buuut due to my fear of serging this fabric, I did French seams and the seam allowance ended up being more like 1/2”-5/8” instead of 3/8”. Fit is 🤌 though! My bias binding skills are improving, but I still find the v back so tricky to finish nicely on this pattern 🥲 #sewing

Some recent personal sewing projects 🌿 1. New fav black linen pants: #closetcoremitchell @closetcorepatterns 🖤 sooo happy with these, worn with an older make: silk #ogdencami @truebias (lace hack on my blog). 2. The first try on that same pattern in navy Tencel twill (I have to go back and fix the leg width, long story, will write in a blog post). 3. New fav black knit top: #weilandtank @elbe_textiles in a mystery rib knit, worn with an older make: stone washed linen bias skirt, started out as a #clobiasskirt, but I ended up redoing the waistband like on one of the bias skirts I got from Uniqlo (took away the waistband, made the skirt tighter, added simple elastic). 4. Linen #gibbonsslipdress @elbe_textiles cut as a top. I already made one bias cut garment in this pretty lavender linen (a long bias dress), and it was giving major Swedish nurse vibes on me (not sure how to describe that in another way 😂), I blame the color, although it should be "my color". I recut that dress into this top. Let's see if I manage to pair this one with something, but it's kind of turning into a cursed fabric, I think. The pattern is cute, and I have other plans for it, and I'd love to try the dress! 5. Alone time in my happy place 🤍 I'll post all these makes more in detail on the blog/ Threadloop once I have a bit more time and energy. Hopefully, both work and the heatwave will behave at some point 🫠.

grimseamripper
i really wanted to make myself a birthday dress lol. cutting slinky fabric on the bias is tough enough - throw in the heatwave we’ve been having at the moment to make it sweaty, and a self imposed deadline (+ incurable procrastination habits) to make it a good ol bag of fun. this is take 2 of the #gibbonsslipdress in view B - i went down one size (regrettably), shortened the length by 2”, and got it out in time for yesterday’s sweaty, sweaty day and lovely lunch with fb. i think i did a better job on the bias binding phew! but maybe third time’s the charm.

My wearable toile of @elbe_textiles #gibbonsslipdress for a friend’s wedding coming in a couple of months. I never make toiles but decided that I’d need one for this pattern to avoid… flashing 🙈 Mods included 1/2 inch narrow shoulder adjustment and shortening the length by 5 inches. I had put in the darts but like it much more after unpicking them. Made a size B but graded down to A from hip and below. Now I’m trying to decide whether I’d want to make view A or B with the actual fabric!

sewimpatient
Another @elbe_textiles #gibbonsslipdress since I loved my first version so much! If you missed that post quick deets are that this dress comes with multiple neckline options, two cup sizes and two dress lengths that can all be mixed and matched. The back features optional darts for shaping. See earlier post, not far back on my grid, for more details and sizing. The pattern is cut on the bias and just slips over the head. There is also a free sleeve add on available to download from the Elbe Textiles website. This time I’ve sewn view B (more modest neckline) for the front and view A (deep V neckline) for the back with the dress length of view A. Instead of the button neckline closure I opted once again to do what will be forever known to me as lovely Claire’s @clairemadeit long tie hack 😉❤️ I’ve sewn this version in 185 European laundered linen (colour Big Sur) from @merchantandmills . I sewed the same size as last time between a size B and C from the waist up and just a little smaller than a size B from the waist down as my measurements put me between sizes. The only thing I did differently was to hand finish all of the neckline and armhole bias binding by hand - yes, it takes time, but a much nicer finish is achieved😉 once again I’ve included a photo to show how easily this dress can be worn for a more casual look. Another bonus is that despite being cut in the bias I only needed 1.8m of fabric for this dress🤗. A great pattern with lots of great versions on the hashtag. #elbetextiles #merchantandmillsfabric #sustainablefabric #sustainable #memadeeveryday #slowfashion #ethicallymade✅ #handmadewardobe #isewmyownclothes #sewover50 #sewover50jun

unhemmed #gibbonsslipdress in view A - bias binding needs work 😭😭 but also i lazily hacked the front bodice to raise the v neck without making adjustments to the skirt and it maybe looks floofier in the front. tencel feels amazing btw i never wna take it off but i dont think this yellow sits well with me. i’ll maybe just chop the top off to make this a bias skirt one day and we can forget this happened
