Stupendously happy with this overshirt, it was just what I wanted! Both the fabric and the pattern had been marinating in my stash for at least a year, so I was very happy to get both out and pair them up. The fabric is a beautiful light-ish weight wool, in my favourite windowpane check. I also have this fabric in a navy and lighter blue colourway, but decided that I needed the brown one for this pattern! The Overshirt pattern is also lovely, a very straightforward shirt pattern but with some really nice details. I love a tower placket, and all of the seams are neatly enclosed inside the yoke or flat felled seams. The only change I made was to also flat fell the armscye, it seemed like a shame to use the overlocker on just that bit! During Aotearoa’s summer I joined the @modern_sewing_co winter capsule course. It was full of excellent tutorials and advice/inspiration from other makers! Here is my full outfit (coat details below but other garments are in recent posts). Happy to share the comfiest coat ever: the #MSdarcycoat. I thought this make would be really challenging and because of that, I worked slowly and carefully and only had to unpick once(!!). The pattern and extra course tutorials were so clear that it felt surprisingly straightforward to make a lined coat – highly recommend! Made in a beautiful wool twill with a cotton/silk lining (a bit noisy with so much cotton tbh) and corozo buttons. It’s the short version in size 14 (following my bust measurement) which is nice and roomy for chunky knits underneath. I’d maybe size down for a more refined long coat. I love how customisable the pattern is – I chose the pointed collar, no sleeve tab, and two welt pockets. (Could not for the life of me get weave direction on the welts to correspond with the coat, but c’est la vie.) Worn with the #MSovershirt #MSfridashirt & #MSsundaytrackies.

Here is the #MSOverShirt by @modern_sewing_co in an upcycled cotton twill from @wearethefabricstore Super happy with the buttons from @drapersfabrics that I took about an hour to choose. I fell in love as soon as I popped it on and have worn it pretty much every day of spring!

#msovershirt by @modern_sewing_co in a size 12 with no modifications. The fabric is from a secondhand shop near Toulouse that I bought last summer and managed to fit into my free cabin bag to fly home 🌹🌹🌹 The pockets are deliberately the wrong side of the fabric, the sleeves are also wrong side due to a placket based incident 😬 having said that this is still my neatest sewn shirt to date. I do wish I had placed the pattern on the back differently so the yoke didn’t cut off the bottom of the squares, and centred the squares as they make the loop look off centre. I love how @modern_sewing_co patterns always include bound seams (not just overlocker/zigzag stitch) as it leads to such a luxe finish. More cute Czech glass buttons, this time with tiny four leaf clovers 🍀

This was my second version of this pattern as my daughter borrowed the first one I made and now I’m never getting it back 🧐. This one is lined and was also originally longer but something with the proportions were off and I didn’t use it, so last month I shortened it (more like the original length on the pattern) and it fits so much better now! My resolve to not buy any new fabric melted away completely when I saw one of the lovely owners in @flojofabrics in Bristol wearing a jumpsuit in this gorgeous green linen I have been wanting to make the #MSovershirt for ages and this felt to me to be the perfect match. I sewed up a size 6 - one size down according to my measurements but made no other alterations and I love it. It pairs beautifully with white and indigo denim as well as a host of other items in my wardrobe. I love all the @modern_sewing_co patterns which have a simple clean aesthetic, are well drafted and have great instructions. STORY TIME for this #msovershirt (@modern_sewing_co) 🇯🇵 I thrifted the fabric from Japan last summer. An old kimono that had a bunch of stains ( = cheap), but still beautiful and I thought I could save it! 🤓 I came home and did a bunch of research on kimono silks, how to wash and take care of them, took the whole thing apart, cut all my pattern pieces carefully, and sewed up the overshirt 🪡 (FYI: size 14, cropped) so far so good. 🚨 As a last step before doing the buttons, I tried to wash it one last time. There were still some spots in places that looked like mold, so I put it in a bucket with a whitening detergent, while I did other household chores 🤦‍♀️... I had inadvertently bleached the jacket in a matter of minutes! I was heartbroken 💔 and crying over a precious piece of fabric that I had fucked up for not thinking things through... After a few months of mourning, I gathered the courage to dye the jacket. I used an indigo dye in a plastic tub, turning the fabric every 15 mins, for a total of 45 mins. I took no photographic evidence because I was panicking 😂 but after what felt like an eternity of rinsing the dye off, I hung it up to dry, and... I had saved my jacket?!?! In the end, I’m in love with the jacket/overshirt, 🩵 the color is miraculously perfect, and I’m so grateful for a creative practice that reminds me that fucking up is normal and that almost everything has a solution (within and outside the realm of sewing, too ❤️‍🩹)

Cozy over shirt and a throwback to last fall 🍂 My dad picked out this Shetland flannel (by @robertkaufman) from @lestissees when he last visited me in Montreal. Well hello!! I’ve been drawn to sewing clothing the last few months and thought it would be a good time to dip my toe back into Instagram with a post. I really love so many of the patterns that have been put out by small businesses in the last few years. I have a healthy pdf library from each of these designers and look forward to many more makes. @modern_sewing_co as been one of my happiest finds. They offer lovely designs and teach high end finishes in their patterns. Also, they offer capsule courses which focus on just a few of their patterns in the course, and how to finish them beautifully.
