We started 2024 moving house and ended it with a new grandchild so it’s been a busy 12 months. 🪡 2023: The Projects That Got Away - Part 3 . Over the next few days, I'm planning to share a few things I made this year which, for one reason or other, didn't make it to Instagram sooner. Some are gifts I couldn't share at the time; some I haven't managed to photograph 'properly'; some I'm not as happy with as I could be. But they're all things I made, and which reflect the cadence of my 2023. . First up today: Challenging trousers (which IS a category of its own, I assure you)! . 🪡 A pair of @modern_sewing_co #msworkertrousers in burgundy drill from @fabworksmillshop! These took me 3 months - not because they were especially hard, but because making trousers to fit your body means acquainting yourself with all the intricacies of your own size and shape, and sometimes that requires summoning up all the fortitude you can muster. . I used @ithacamaven's #topdowncenterout method to fit these - it worked really well, with the only errors being the result of my own fumblings (it's v hard to scrutinise your own arse in a mirror, you know). I've got a bit of extra fabric under the back waistband, but it disappears on sitting down, so I'd be loath to tweak it too much in future versions in case I over-fit them. . The pattern itself is good, although I found the fly construction notes unclear in places. I don't exactly feel a million dollars in the finished trousers, but they've been a real wardrobe staple this year so I think I may need more pairs. . 🪡 Another pair of @threadtheorydesigns #quadrajeans for @most_magical_mike, in lovely @fabricgodmother denim! The purple pair I made last year are his best-fitting pair of jeans (you BET that feels good 😎), so I made another pair with the same measurements and tweaks, adding length to the legs and height to the rise and rivets for extra sturdiness. . I love this pattern so much - it's really taken the fear out of trouser construction for me. #memademay2025 recap and my favorite outfits✨ Since I usually already wear something I've made myself, the real challenge this year was capturing the outfits and trying new combinations. I realised that, especially for work, I tend to wear quite basic outfits and rotate my favourite homemade clothing items. I would have liked to wear some of my more summery pieces, but I really struggled to find outfits suitable for the rather cool spring days 🙆🏼‍♀️ Ultimately, I mostly wore homemade trousers (rotating between my three pairs of #msworkertrousers by @modern_sewing_co and my #dadarcypants by @dressmakingamore ), and I realised that I could add some more shirts (ones that aren't basic tops or long-sleeved) 🌞 While I haven't shown much of it here (yet), I also managed to do a bit more sewing this month and finished four projects for myself and friends 🧵

Completely failed at #memademay this year, but here's a dump of some makes I wore on our girls' trip to Croatia. #memademay day 30: the one with the top I don't think I've worn before I love this #cloudtop by @petiteknit but it's problematic. I bought the yarn from @fibrespace in Alexandria, VA last summer when I was in the area for a conference. I don't usually get to go to yarn and fabric shops these days, and all the beautiful yarns were so very, very tempting. So much so that I chose to ignore the yarn recommendations for this top and instead chose this gorgeous linen yarn from @dererumnatura - I mean, have you seen the colour? I don't usually wear red but when I do it's this shade. The colour isn't what makes it problematic. The fact that this is slightly heavier than the recommended yarn is (a fact I failed to realise as I was buying it). As a result the top is too heavy for the Mississippi summer heat and humidity. I was able to get away with wearing it today because the weather is currently doing its best impression of an English summer's day. In order to give this top the love it deserves I'm going to have to learn to layer it during the cooler months. Either that or I'm going to have to move back to the UK. Die letzten Tage habe ich in #fibremooddazzle verbracht. Ich finde es schwierig mit dem täglichen Posten, wenn sich meine Kleidung wiederholt…aber es war wirklich so, dass ich mein erstes Poloshirt nach dem Schnitt Dazzle aus der letzten Fibremood gar nicht wieder ausziehen wollte. Das erste war das blaue, aus einem French Terry aus dem Vorrat. Anleitung und Schnitt finde ich sehr gut, aber die Pololeiste ist mir nicht gut gelungen- um nicht zu sagen, ich habe gepfuscht. Deshalb musste ich gleich noch eines nähen, diesmal aus einem Jerseyjaquard. Der lag noch tiefer unten im Stoffstapel, wie gut, dass er jetzt seine Bestimmung gefunden hat! #memademay day 13: the one with the first repeat Today's outfit combines one of my newest makes with one of my oldest - and continues my efforts at trying new print mixing. The trousers - also worn on day 1 - are the @modern_sewing_co #msworkertrousers in a giraffe print canvas from @lyricalfabrics which I love. I'm going to get as much wear out of them before it gets too hot for them. The top is a #seamworksorbetto #colettesorbetto made from some cotton, the origin of which has been lost to the mists of time. I'm not sure exactly how long ago I made this top - it was definitely before I moved to Mississippi so that makes it at least 6 years old, and probably closer to 10. While I've learned a lot about sewing since then, I'm pleased that something I made so early on is still wearable. It rained last night!!! I swear I could hear the garden heaving sighs of relief at 3am. It felt strange waking to mist and dark skies here because we’ve had sun every day for almost seven weeks, except for at Easter. We had an early start for my 3-yearly breast screening appointment at 9 am, then a trip to the tile and bathroom shop to choose and finally the garden centre. This is my one and only @paper_theory #olyashirt in some linen from a duvet, and my @modern_sewing_co #msworkertrousers in denim from @stonefabrics. The shirt was an interesting construction that I’ve not seen before but I love it and the pants were a dream to make, even the button fly. They both fitted true to size. After lunch we walked up the lane to the barley field. It had grown so fast! If you swipe left, the penultimate photo was taken on 1 May in the same spot and the. The last photo two weeks before that on 14 April, so it has taken four weeks to grow. We have to keep the spaniel on the lead in case she hears a pheasant and flattens it trying to catch said pheasant! Tomorrow we’re off to Totnes for Mr T’s haircut and I’m getting to go to @stonefabrics, hurrah! Tag 11 des #memademay2025 mit einer Wanderhose mit Reißverschlüssen an den Bein Außenseiten. Fürs Wandern muss ich Orthesen tragen, damit kann ich meine Beinachse etwas korrigieren und meine Arthroseknie entlasten, und am anderen Tag schmerzfrei laufen. Für mich sind die Orthesen ein Gewinn denn es erhält mir Lebensqualität und bewahrt mich ein um das andere Jahr vor dem Einsetzen eines künstliches Kniegelenk. Das Hilfsmittel geht von Mitte Unterschenkel bis Mitte Oberschenkel und muss auf der Haut getragen werden, und sie machen kein schlankes Bein. Wieso ich nicht früher auf die Idee kam aus Funktionsstoff eine passende Hose zu nähen kann ich nach der heutigen ersten Wanderung mit der Hose nicht mehr nachvollziehen. Auf Bild 2 sehr ihr die Orthesen und den geöffneten Reißverschluss das erleichtert das an und ausziehen enorm. Denn in Ruhestellung soll ich die Teile ausziehen. This whole outfit ( and you know I make complete looks not just individual pieces ) was inspired by this pair of Googly eyes pins I got in Edinburgh. This is me entering my monochrome era. It’s been on the cards for some time, but sewing and knitting the colour black is so harsh on my poor wee eyes 👀 I guess this is easier now that the sun os around for a lot more of the day! The striped top was already on the needles. But when I saw those eyes, the whole outfit came together real fast! The pants are @modern_sewing_co #msworkertrousers (which I adore and have another finished yesterday!) these made in a heavy black cotton I think maybe from @woolcresttextiles… my new favourite trouser pattern! The jacket is the @merchantandmills #mmsandajacket which is also made in the matching black cotton. I’ve made this pattern a couple times. It’s super quick without adding lining! It’s perfect spring time attire. The jersey is @petiteknit #arossweater which I have also made once before in cheap and cheerful @dropsdesign it’s already started pilling so that’s fun! But the price point would indicate that this may happen. And the little eyes are from @lynseywalters. Fucking love them. Cute little number to pull the whole outfit together. Just another Saturday, curry simmering and a quiet opportunity to show off #msworkertrousers A straight size 12 and a little added to the length. Fabric is beautiful. A medium weight denim with some stretch in the Taupe colourway from @kwaintthreads The denim is lovely and easy to work with, pretty pleased with the outcome. Something went awry with the fly, I found it tricky and it is not right. Oh well, I’ll smile and move on. There’s a lot of crazy stuff out there in the world, and I’m trying to do my part to make things better. Doing careful, conscientious crafting is rejuvenating and feels like taking a stand against the chaos. I’ve been taking the Spring capsule course with @modern_sewing_co and for the first time learned how to really play with trouser fitting. Starting with the #msworkertrousers I,
 - Added a deep pleat and a much wider leg, using the K pants from #bigclothessmallclothes as an inspiration for widening the worker trouser leg.
 - Lowered the front rise half an inch - Followed the videos and applied a slight full seat adjustment. It’s the first time I’ve tried this kind of slash and spread paper adjustment!
 - Added back waist darts
 - Because my front pleats are quite wide, I moved them a little toward the sides, which meant I had to redraft the front pocket to cut into the front area less, to make room for the pleat. I think this does look balanced, but it makes the pocket opening a bit uncomfortably small.
 - I cut the back waistband in two pieces, attached it to the pants first, and then sewed the back center seam as single step, so I could easily modify the waist width by re-sewing the back center seam, both for the initial fit and if I change weight.
 
It worked better for me to sew the fly/center seam first, and then the side seams and back seam last. I learned that I need to baste the fused waistband in when I’m doing the fitting. Perhaps due to the softness of the corduroy and fullness of the leg, fitting without the waistband or with only the unfused waistband gave me an inaccurate fit.

 There was a lot of waistband unpicking! I fiddled with the depth of the pleats, the back darts and back center seam. I did a lot more work with pattern paper and trying different adjustments before cutting any fabric than I ever have. I was intimidated by the fly, but it was surprisingly straightforward for me. I’m happy with the final results. I’m so pleased with how the fly bindings and French seamed pockets look that the other day, I ahem, unzipped my pants while wearing them to show a friend what the insides looked like!

Currently on my way back home from a wonderful holiday in Denmark and Sweden and I already can't wait to get back to sewing! It is officially starting to be very cold here in Aus, and it dawned on me yesterday that this means my beloved pair of winter jeans get to come out of hibernation 😍 These are the Worker Trousers and throughout winter it isn't unusual for me to have weeks where I wear them every. single. day. 😂 They are made with this super awesome stretch denim that has a slightly fleecy inside. It's from Potter and Co, and if I see them get anything like this in stock again I'll definitely be jumping right on it! It's a game changer! My amazingly creased top also hasn't been worn since last winter (can't you tell?? 🤣). Denim short toile of the #msworkertrousers. Far from perfect but def good to have a practice run of the fly construction 🥵 These are size 18 from the hip down, grading to a 16 waist. They’re a bit roomy in places but v comfy! @modern_sewing_co have an excellent trouser fitting guide. For my trousers, I’ll use smaller buttons inside the fly (2.5cm are too big) and make further fit adjustments if I’m feeling brave enough! p.s. pls ignore the chalk marks lol this was pre-wash

Last hotel room #memademay Made it back home after 17 hours of driving (I'm exhausted). Both of these makes came from the spring capsule wardrobe workshop I did with @modern_sewing_co Shirt is another #msunisexshirt and pants are my first version of the #msworkertrousers. The pants fabric was a super cool find from an old upholstery business that closed down over a decade ago. The son of the owners had a huge warehouse of old fabric bolts that I bought from when I still had no idea what fabrics worked for what. I've since made a duvet cover, these pants, and a shirt for Baxter out of this fabric.

Heavy rain yesterday made for a productive sewing afternoon, and I finished this @sewingwithliliya #arlovest . I made it in leftover @merchantandmills black denim from my recent Coe Pants and it’s lined in black cotton voile also from them, with corozo buttons from @newcrafthouse . There are lots of lovely waistcoat patterns out there, but I was particularly drawn to the high neck and longer line of this one, which I think gives it quite a late 90’s feel. I’m loving it as a co-ord set but also with jeans. I think it’ll be less practical for layering under, but something slim fitting would work. I’ll need to try on a few things. But in the meantime, it’s fine on its own on our less freezing summer days, especially as these days my average core temp seems to be about 5 deg higher than everyone else. I made a couple of changes: I omitted the waist ties, and added tiny pocket bags to the otherwise faux vent pockets. If I’m going to the effort of making vent pockets, I thought they may as well be functional. And I slightly messed up the positioning of the button holes so ended up with 9 rather than 8, just for personal comfort and preference. I also cut the lining ever so slightly smaller than the main fabric, so it doesn’t peek out. Finally, I took about 1cm off the centre front on both sides just at the very top to reduce a bit of gaping. This is a great pattern for a metre or less of fabric (for my size at least), although not a massively quick sew due to the vents and all the understitching. But it’s all finished off beautifully with just a bit of hand sewing at the back hem. Worn here with matching #coetrousers (which bizarrely looks a different colour here!), and new to Mary Janes from @nicci_de_vries and also #msworkertrousers with Hush sandals via Vinted.

I’ve had this @modern_sewing_co #msworkertrousers pattern for a couple of years now and only just plucked up the courage to have a go. I had bought what I thought were two pairs of charity shop jeans in the same shade but they turned out to be not quite the same colour. So I decided to lean into that, bought some contrasting jeans and went full patchwork. I made a size 14 no modifications. Fits not perfect but pretty good for a first attempt. Bought entirely too much fabric at @UrbanOre today (two rolls of 100% cotton twill for $10!!!) Urban ore is my favorite place in the Bay to find secondhand fabric, but it couldn’t be such an amazing place without @urban_ore_workers I was inspired by the workers who held the strike for 40 days, and I am glad that it led to continued bargaining.
