Classic Shirt
The Modern Sewing Co

Classic Shirt
The Classic Shirt features traditional shirt making techniques with a chic, modern cut. It's fitted on the shoulders and flows into an A-line shape with a deep scooped V-shape hem. Works best in lightweight, breathable fabrics that have flexibility such as cotton poplin/lawn, linen, lightweight denim, needlecord, lightweight twill and flannel.

Of course, I also made myself a shirt in the same linen/cotton! (I bought 3m as it was only $10/m)š¤ This is the Classic Shirt #msclassicshirt by @modern_sewing_co ā½ļø Iāve made a few different button up patterns (Grainline Archers years ago and more recently the Bloom Shirt by The Fabric Store and the TAL Oversized shirt) but still really wanted to try this one - I love all the Modern Sewing patterns ā¤ļø ā½ļø Itās fitted across the shoulders and looser in the body, with a lovely classic shirt hem and generous length - and French seams for the body and sleeves ā½ļø I made small pleats instead of the usual CB and sleeve cuff pleats, just for fun ā½ļø this is a size 16 which fits really well

I made a foundational white button up for spring/summerš¤š¤š¤ My goal was learning how to make clothing that looks as good on the inside as the outside and mission accomplished. French seams to armholes, side seams and flat hem binding. I took the @modern_sewing_co spring capsule wardrobe to improve my seam finishing. Friends fear she's been taking crap photos of cute shirts again š«¢ Ending my accidental grid hiatus to share a few snaps of my most recent finished sewing project - this adorable #msclassicshirt (pattern by @modern_sewing_co) in an ancient Liberty print I've had in stash for probably about eight years. I've been on a proper shirtmaking bender these last few months - apparently I just can't get enough of a crisp collar and a sleeve placket. I'll try and remember to share some others soon - I think I've made at least three Olya shirts I haven't taken any photos of yet. Anyway, this shirt! I love the MS Classic Shirt pattern - it's got lots of lovely high-finish details like the split hem, and I gave it French seams throughout so it's durable af and looks great inside out, too (should I ever choose to wear it that way...!). I think I need a few fit adjustments if I make it again - it's a bit too narrow in the back and broad in the shoulders, and the cuffs have ended up too loose (as you can see in my grumpy photo if you swipe), but it's beautifully wearable and I'm not mad. This fabric is really lovely, but I'm not sure I'm really a Liberty gal, tbh - it's almost aggressively whimsical and I feel a bit like I'm back on Tumblr circa 2010. But if I'm going to go and frolic in a forest and hand-feed some woodland creatures, I know exactly what I'll be wearing for the occasion... #sewing #sewcialists #sewistsofinstagram #sewist #makersgonnamake #makersgonnamake #handmade #handmadewardrobe #imakemyownclothes #modernsewing #modernsewingco #sewqueer #thelittlequince

Chapter 8: The Classic Shirt by @modern_sewing_co My first Modern Sewing Co pattern. Who knew this would start an obsession? This was a sized up version after I made a wearable toile. I use this piece mostly as an overshirt and I reach for it all the time. Thereās something so satisfying about wearing a piece youāve made and really loving how it fits. I didnāt make any changes to the pattern, but I did use the long sleeve length. I have a thing about sleeves being too short, so I tend to go a little longer than necessary. Size: 10 Fabric: Cotton corduroy #msclassicshirt #modernsewingco #memade #memadewardrobe #slowfashion #sewing #thanksimadeit

Easy breezy black linen button up, check. Iāve been meaning to make this piece for ages, but it somehow got pushed down the queue by various other projects. Probably, in part, because I knew I wanted use some damn fine linen, but I was unwilling to shell out for said damn fine linen. However! When @modern_sewing_co reached out to me to take part in their spring suit capsule course (gifted with no obligation to post), I convinced myself (rather quickly, I may add) that if I use stash fabric for the pants, then it would be silly not to make my perfect #msclassicshirt in a drool worthy drop dead gorgeous fabric. I really enjoyed taking my time on this project, though at times, I stressed myself out with my strict adherence to perfection. All in all, it did turn out pretty perfect though, and I learned some new techniques along the way. Iāve sewn a number of shirts already (and own and implement techniques from David Page Coffinās book), but still found bits of the course content to be useful ā particularly the bias bound hem (š¤¤), the French seamed side slit, and the way Hetty trims the under collar. Also, watching Hetty sew, snip and press is a lesson in and of itself. I cut a size 8 up top and a 6 at the bottom based on my initial classic shirt. I straightened the side seams a bit more (maybe a touch too much š¤·āāļø) as my hip shape does not correspond to the pattern. Further modifications as follows: ā body and sleeves shortened by 1 5/8ā (Iām 5ā4ā) ā made cuffs tighter and longer (similar to the Genra shirt) ā curved the bottom of the sleeve ā topstitched in all topstitchable places ā fastened the button band at the edge only The fabric is Bellina linen in pitch black from Naturstoffe.de Seen here with @daughterjudypatterns #coetrousers #ventotank, and a vintage skirt. #sewistsofinstagram #sewing #sewstagram #springcapsulecourse #modernsewing #memade #memadewardrobe #blacklinen #linenshirt

I started sewing years ago but earnestly got into it because of safari wear - which is expensive and on average not a style I would wear regularly, so I did not think investing it in was sensible or ethical. So this year, when another safari was announcing itself, I made a pledge to document all my wildlife-friendly clothes (which are all with the exception of one top me-made). Anyone who followed my #memademay posts will know that I was, of course, kidding myself. What I ended up with were a handful of blurry mirror-selfies, of which these ones are maybe the least cringe worthy (plus one post-holiday pic, when I was letting that holiday feeling creep into my work wear for as long as I could). 1 - top #gingersweater by @yamagara in gorgeous wool from @catandsparrowuk | trousers #closetcoremitchell in twill from @merchantandmills 2 & 3 - shirt #msclassicshirt in linen from #merchantandmills | trousers #v1829 in deadstock wool, also from #merchantandmills | top - the only RTW item I have in any noteworthy rotation 4 - top #cousettesinguliere in fabric from @itokri | skirt #peppermintpocketskirt in fabric from ?I think? merchantandmills | blazer #closetcorejasika in deadstock linen-blend from #merchantandmills #memadeeveryday #imakemyownclothes #sewing #ichmachemeinekleidungselbst #iwearwhatisew #safariclothing

#skirtno2 @myfavouritethings.knitwear A pattern I saw and immediately bought when it got released. Itās such a good one! The lace pattern is pretty easy but looks so beautiful. And I love the little detail which creates a faux side seam. Although you knit the back and front exactly the same, I marked the back because I knew it will stretch out a bit more than the front. You can see in the second last photo how the back got a bit longer after wearing it for a few hours. Yarn: Cotton Merino @knittingforolive (color: natural white) + Cool Wool Baby @lanagrossa (color: 207) Size: I started with size 3 at the waist but made less increases to get size 2 for the hips. Finished measurements (after wearing it): waistband (flat): 40cm hemline (flat): 46cm front length: 35cm back length: 37.5cm And for all knitters: detailed information can be found on my Ravelry page (link in profile) Worn with #msclassicshirt @modern_sewing_co

The #MSclassicshirt in a gorgeous handwoven cotton from @missmaudenz. I love shirt construction, and the @modern_sewing_co instructions and tutorials were fantastic. I adore the buttons, which from memory were from my dadās stash of spare shirt buttons. The shirt is French seamed with a bound hem. I followed my bust size to make a 14. Catholic school girl Ć la emmatron⦠because we all know who wears the pants around here. Iād been searching high and low for my perfect pleated pant ā tapered leg and non elastic waistband ā for ages. These are none other than the #msworkertrousers @modern_sewing_co modified using the spring suit capsule course, which I received free of charge without any strings attached. Iād long admired the leg shape on this pattern, and it turned out to be just right! I loved learning how to add a pleat, and found the tutorial for this to be quite helpful. Otherwise I didnāt use the videos this time around, as Iām not particularly fond videos in general, and am relatively well versed in pants making. As far as the fit is concerned, I owe a big thanks to @modistadeandarporcasa and @kathleenbmur for assessing my awkward top down center out videos š . Never did I imagine I would be sending out images of myself in my underwear to people on the internet, but somehow the ig sewing community just feels so cozy š Anyway⦠I mostly just reduced the rise on the sides and the back (next pair I would also do the front a bit too), and straightened the side seams. Love my new #msclassicshirt from @modern_sewing_co. Made with some gorgeous viscose twill from @maisonfauveuk. Harder to work with than poplin but such a lovely drapey lux feel. And that colour! Very pleased with my collar trim invention using #ricrac. I invented that, right? And ended up using poppers rather than buttons as I like the simplicity. I think Iāve finally perfected the #GenraShirt by @daughterjudypatterns! This is my ā¦4th? 5th? time making this pattern and I always love it, but the mods on this version are my favorites yet. I always: - Use the burrito method (this is only briefly mentioned in the instructions, but makes a much nicer final project). - Omit interfacing on the shirt facings (but leave it on the collar). This time, I also made the following changes: - I donāt like how the cuffs are constructed on the Genra Shirt, so I kept the sleeves but used the #msclassicshirt @modern_sewing_co cuffs and plackets instead. Note to self for next time: There is too much excess sleeve fabric when I do this (I either have to make a small third pleat or change the pleat size ā I did the former on an earlier version and the latter on this one), but in the future, I need to remember to narrow the sleeve opening width while cutting (just by ~1 inch). - I shortened both the center front and back by ~3.5ā, smoothing out the curve to the sides. The original version has a pretty deep shirttail curve, and while I like it, I think this works better for me + my short torso in terms of proportion. - I finished the whole thing with French seams (mostly because I was too lazy to change my serger thread, but it is a special detail!). The change to the cuffs and hem length in particular are what makes this version work so well for me. I think theyāll become standard mods in all future versions! The fabric is @merchantandmills linen, an absolute dream ⨠Oh, and happy #memademay! I have no promises for how Iāll keep up, and in truth I wear me-made clothes nearly every day anyway, but I love the excitement of the sewing community this month and canāt wait to see what everyone creates ~

What are we Americans, those of us who are opposed fervently to the current dissolution of our State, to do with this waning of American exceptionalism....? I imagine there are those who feel relieved that they donāt have to even try anymore, they can just be their singular consumptive selves, fulfilling their own animalistic needs selfishly. For the rest of us, we have to re-calibrate to a universe that will look at us sideways and with suspicion going forward. There is SO MUCH more to say on this view, and this forum is not the place to get into it in any depth. Every interaction I have now begins with some attempt to understand what is going on. It is the preamble to every conversation. We canāt get to the human stuff until weāve wrestled with the political. There are no conclusions drawn, but many attempts at comprehension. In addition to my anxiety about fascism, I now also worry about how so many people in my Maker universe may be put put out of biz by these tariffs. The ignorant, short-sighted cruelty of it all is breathtaking. The orange thing is off watching golf this weekend while the world absorbs the shit he just took in our living room..... I donāt want this post to be about the chaos. Hmm, maybe too late? I spent some time with my friend Heather this afternoon and we are looking forward to our weekend of garment sewing with a small group. (There is still room if you want to join us!) Yesterday I was depressed about the world, today I am determined to be the fullest version of a liberal, progressive, creative humanist I can till I draw my last breath. I will be at the Portland #HandsOff protest tomorrow. I will continue to advocate for those who our government neglects or attacks. I will use my privilege wherever I am able. Most importantly, I will not let the joyless small minded, insecure, scared people of the universe impede my creativity and my joy. I will Make and create as acts of resistance. (More in comments)

I would not recommend going back into the studio after a solid month of motion, illness, stress, and general disruption, to work on a project with a woven gingham fabric with french seams and a flat bound hem. I am happy with this @modern_sewing_co #MSClassicShirt in one of the cuts of delicious linen I brought back from Korea this Fall courtesy of @linenlab.co.kr . But, damn if I didnāt do a whole lot of seam ripping and second guessing on this shirt. I had to replace all of the bound hem (bias bound!) pieces, after having trimmed them, because I sewed them on the wrong side.... š¤¦āāļø I just couldnāt keep my brain on task. All in all this was a straightforward sew. Any foibles in the assembly were all mine. Working with the smaller seam allowance (1cm) took some getting used to. And Iām not exactly sure whether the shoulders fit me. Gonna wait till after I sew buttons/holes and give it a wash before I decide. The fabric is dreamy, and as written, this button up has less top stitching than others Iāve made. That gives the whole shirt a softer more relaxed feel. My inclination is to immediately cut and sew another one, but think I will wear this one a bit first. I do love me a button up shirt! From a distance this one looks a bit like chambray.... Heather of @herselfclothing and I are doing an open sew weekend at her studio 4/11-13. It looks like we might have a spot, or two, available. If youāre interested send me an email through my website and I can get you details.... Pants are #CoeTrousers in olive twill from #BlackbirdFabricsā¦. Such a good pants pattern!

It's been a few weeks since I was last working on making my mini summer capsule. With the launch of the new pattern updates I've had my eye off the ball with it but I'm excited to say I'm getting back to it this week. If you missed the introduction of this idea, I've been making my own mini summer capsule and sharing the process. You can catch up by reading the blog called 'How to Make a Summer Capsule' - I've put the direct link in the bio. Have a swipe for the pieces that have already been completed along with my original mood board. The photos were taken on every camera device I own (digital, film and phone) so there is no visual consistency which bothers me. But you get the idea... 1 - #MSceliadress hack 2 - #MSclassicshirt with short sleeves 3 - #MSdaphnetrousers as shorts 4 - #MScaratop without the collar (and a little bit more fitted and cropped) 5 - #MSworkertrousers with a pin-tuck hack . How many linen shirts is too many?Ā Asking for a friendā¦. This is another version of the @modern_sewing_co Classic Shirt, made in cobalt linen originally purchased in 2021 from @merchantandmills, with the intention of making this shirt - at least I got there eventually! I have made this pattern several times and it is definitely my TNT for a casual shirt.Ā As with my previous versions of this shirt, I lengthened the sleeves by a couple of inches, included a breast pocket and did some additional topstitching.Ā I also adjusted the side seam curve, as it is a little high on me ā #sewingtall ā this involved increasing the length at the sides and reducing the curve slightly at front and back. This is another useful addition to my wardrobe that I will wear all year round ā thatās why I love a linen shirt, it can be worn in so many different ways according to season, and this one is such a beautiful colour too! #memadeeveryday #handmadewardrobe #isewmyownclothes #imakemyownclothes #diyfashion #diywardrobe #diyootd #lovesewing #2025rtwfast #stashbusting #sewistsofinstagram #sewover50 #so50shirts #over50style #fabulous50s #sewoverageism #modernsewingcompany #msclassicshirt #merchantandmills #SewOver50Aug

After I finished my last project, I thought, "big", polished projects with high-end finishings would be my new thing ^^ So I thought Hattie's workshop at @modern_sewing_co was perfect! In the beginning, I was really motivated, got my patterns printed on A0, curated my fabrics and notions... but then the school year got really stressful, and I had to pause. For the shirt option, I chose the #msclassicshirt in a dreamy quail egg colored cotton polin. While working on it, I was delighted with how everything turned out! Hattie does such a great job explaining all the steps and I got a chance to try out some new techniques and really focus on the detailsāI've never seen such an easy way of sewing the plackets and I even nailed the french seam arm holes that I didnāt think Iād pull off after I read some of the comments in the forum. But after I had sewn the side seams together, I realized that I accidentally cut itĀ three sizes too small. I made it in size 6 while I'm a 12 (lesson learned: pattern tracing and The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives donāt mix ^^) I still finished it anyway because I still enjoyed the process. I really liked the pattern and enjoyed all the details and will definitely make another, actually fitting version in the fall. Itās #memademay Day 3 and I found myself on a sunny beach in the greatest summer make of all time š When I got dressed this morning it was 14 degrees and cloudy (obvs, classic bank holiday) so I played it safe and wore trousers and a t shirt and added this pink shirt for an extra layer. At the last minute before we left the house I had a glimmer of hope that the sun would come out and grabbed the matching shorts. My optimism paid off and we had a gorgeous day in the sunshine down in Dorset. Honestly everything about this set just works: š The colour is so bold it jazzes up literally any outfit š it also somehow just goes with everything š the double gauze fabric (from @good_fabric_store , where else?!) is soft and light but also somehow cosy, idk how that works š the shorts are the most comfortable things and the shirt is a perfect cover up for my pasty skin If you donāt already have a double gauze shorts & shirt combo in your life consider this a hard recommend. @modern_sewing_co #msclassicshirt In my opinion this pattern embodies a āclassic shirt.ā Itās so professional and sleekā the design fits well, itās sharp! The curves! The stiff collar! You get it. The only problem isā Iām not professional. I tried to photograph this in the way I feel it should be worn rather than in a way that showcases the awesome design details. IMO to wear a classic shirt you should be messy, sweaty, wrinklyā maybe you just laid on the couch for a few hours. Itās a uniform so it should look worn. After some brutal unpicking though I am much happier with the fit! This pair began as size 14 but I think Iāll start with size 12 next time. Denim is a beautiful organic 12oz from @merchantandmills The shirt is @modern_sewing_co #msclassicshirt size 12 with no modifications made in viscose from @fabricsgalorelondon Love this pattern! #sewover50 #memadewardrobe

I love a yearly round up and this year I've done two... the first was our 2023 Inspiration Board newsletter of wonderful makes throughout the year - swipe to see a few of them. The second will hit your inbox tomorrow morning and features my reflections on the year as well as a short Q&A of questions that you sent in. My brain capacity this week isn't going to stretch to summarising all of that in a short post. So make sure you're subscribed to receive it and if you miss it check the blog in a week or so and it will be saved on there! 2 - @emilyburtner #MSovershirt 3 - @nonbinary_bind_off #MSRibSweater 4 - @_andreamakes #MSclassicshirt 5 - @sophiesewsherwardrobe #MSspringtrousers 6 - @pieintheskypress #MSclassicshirt 7 - @marguerite_by_m #MSdarcycoat 8 - @sophiesewsherwardrobe #MSspringtrousers 9 - @thecolourandtheshape__ #msjessejumpsuit 10 - @elephantinthestudy #MSworkertrousers

Modern Sewingās Spring Trousers and Classic Shirt. These pants have been so hard to photographā¦turns out the best shots are the ones where Iāve not done up the second button, just so you know. I modified the pattern quite a bit as I went, so they were also a roller coaster ride to sew. But people keep on asking me about themā¦Iām taking this as a sign that my machinations have workedš® Notes: @modern_sewing_co #msspringtrousers in a beautiful heavyweight navy linen from @wearethefabricstore Size 10 with 2cm removed from both side and inseams and a significant amount of volume removed from the seat of the pants by carving out the back seam. My measurements put me at a size 8 in waist and 14 in hip, so I knew I could make adjustments until I got the back waist area sitting high and flat, then adjust the size of the curved waistband. To keep this area relatively neat, the elasticated panel only sits in the small of back and is about half the length of the pattern. The trousers sit at my natural waist which is quite high, meaning that I lost a bit of length - I cut the middle length and I wouldāve liked them to be a tad longer (Iām 162cm). The waistband has also been reduced by a third so it wouldnāt fold in half sitting on my natural waist and I added belt loops. So many changes! I think Iāve been left with some drag lines along the inner leg seam, but Iāve thus far avoided the worst of the bagged out bum that I have with my other linen pants so Iām not fussed. Iām still very tempted to add welt pockets to the backā¦maybe next time. #sewworkwear #msclassicshirt
