Potters Jacket
The Modern Sewing Co

Potters Jacket
The Potters Jacket is a classic lined jacket with two pocket options - welt pocket or gusset pocket - and two different lengths. Construction techniques include welt pockets, gusset pockets, 2-piece sleeve, collar & facing and a full lining. Suitable fabrics include wools, wax cottons, heavy cottons and linens, with summer variations optionally unlined.

Chapter 20: The Potter’s Jacket from @modern_sewing_co Can you tell I’m vibing with the oversized look? My greatest sewing weakness might be making my sleeves intentionally too long 🌝 I haven’t had a chance to wear this one out and about yet because it’s already so hot in Nashville, but I have a feeling it’ll be a staple in the fall. Perfect for slipping on over a sweater. The pattern comes with options for lined or unlined and I obviously chose the latter. I went with a slightly dressier look with the welt pockets. I added a couple of inches to the sleeves (obvs) and added French seams and binding on the internal seams. Overall, I’m proud of this one. The welt pockets still need some practice, but better every time. Size: 1XS Fabric: 100% cotton twill #mspottersjacket #modernsewingco #memade #memadewardrobe #slowfashion #sewing #thanksimadeit

Daycare pick up outfit 😆 This was my first time making anything lined and with wool! It’s not perfect but I’m overall pleased by this #mspottersjacket that I made as a part of the winter capsule wardrobe by @modern_sewing_co. The instructions, coupled with tutorial videos of #msovershirt were super helpful!! Made with beautiful deadstock cashmere and wool blend by @stonemountainfabric ❤️ #memade #memadeeveryday #memadewardrobe

#mspottersjacket from @modern_sewing_co from dead stock fabric bought @fabricgodmother. It’s waterproof fabric so quite heavy but was easy enough to sew. Made for my youngest as an autumn jacket and they are very happy!! Unlined as the fabric has a gorgeous orange backing so pops well with the gusset pockets. I French seamed when possible and used bias tape around the armholes. Very happy and love sewing the @modern_sewing_co patterns. Well drafted, explained and classic.

Before I start to share the development work for my mini summer capsule I wanted to share a few pictures from this recent personal sewing project. I created this jacket using the #MSUnisexShirt as a base for the shape and it's turned out to look like a mens version of the #MSpottersjacket pattern. The fabric is a very beautiful @londonclothco twill which I bought from @raystitch along with a royal blue topstitching thread and a contrast pop of yellow for the details. I thought I'd be using a traditional button for this jacket but I found it needed a metal denim button to help it feel a bit more modern. I won't be sharing this garment in depth as it's so far off any of the patterns in the range but I'm so happy with the details that I couldn't resist sharing a few snaps. Flicking through the photos you'll find some development snaps that I took along the way. It really goes to show how far you can push a garment visually after the shell is complete. I slowly add details such as pockets and contrast stitching, starting with the ones I know I definitely want and then building up from there. It's a question of feeling the balance of the design and function as you go and having fun with the creative process 💫✨

#memademay day number who knows 😅. Wearing #mspottersjacket in slightly stretchy twill from @newcrafthouse. The colour was originally light brown but over the past year, since I made it, I just didn't reach for this jacket enough...and so I dyed it. Twice. I used one of those Dylon 'eggs' that you put in the washing machine to dye fabric. I first dyed it in colour called 'espresso' which turned a bit 💩brown. Second time round i used colour 'black' and that turned this jacket into a very dark brown, almost black in some light. And i love it! I also swapped the buttons for new ones from @newcrafthouse (I've been wondering if they could be from @toast lol 🤔) I find it so much more versatile now and easier to style with the rest of my (brown lool) clothes. The trousers are #msworkertrousers in cream corduroy fabric. Both fhe jacket and trousers are by @modern_sewing_co I am also wearing a barely visible vest lol which is the #vestno2 by @myfavouritethings.knitwear in Tinde by @hillesvagullvarefabrikk 👌 #sewing #MeMadeMay2023 #sewingproject #sewingofinstagram #sewistsofinstagram #memadeclothes #sustainablefashion #diyfashion #capsulewardrobe

#memademay day 5, also known as Children’s Day in Korea and Japan! Rainy and chilly but got to show off my new Spring Capsule set from @modern_sewing_co ❤️ I used the same lightweight deadstock denim by @merchantandmills to make this Canadian tux with #mspottersjacket and #msdaphnetrousers patterns. Added brown corduroy for inside the cuff (folded up in the picture), collar, inside of the pocket flap, and back facing. So proud to finish all the sides with either French seam or bias binding. One subtle contrast buttonhole because why not. It’s love ❤️ #memademay2025

Where to start with this one… I have made all the mistakes so you don’t have to… I was beguiled into buying this beautiful chestnut jumbo cord from Beyond the Pink Door without properly reading the product description and was surprised when it arrived to discover that it was really stretchy, not just a little bit. Never mind I thought, I can make this work. Well I then cut the back piece with the opposite nap to the fronts which left me short of fabric for one sleeve, a replacement back piece and the neck facing. Fortunately Andrea still had some left so I placed a second order. I had real trouble with the lower welt pockets and after three attempts I have had to bodge them (the welt just seems far too big for the opening) although weirdly the top one went in like a dream. I had to be REALLY careful not to stretch this fabric while sewing so as not to create puckers and the I sewed the sleeves to the sleeve linings the wrong way at LEAST three times ! I’ve done all this stuff before so don’t know why it went so irritatingly wrong on this project, and to add insult to injury the miserable weather we had been having has turned boiling hot so no need for this jacket yet. Ho hum…I have also learnt that there are some free download options of alternative pockets for this project which I would definitely investigate if I make this jacket again.

The oil skin jacket 🫒 I bought oil skin fabric with the intention of making a jacket I can wear when I ride my bike (which I do every day from April-Nov). Oil skin is quite wind resistant and can take some light rain - perfect for a lot of Norwegian days. 🌦️ 🚲 The pattern is #mspottersjacket and I did the same adjustments Hetty did when she hacked this pattern. It’s been lengthened with about 12 cm, and widened at the bottom. The sleeves are long, but perfect for riding a bike. I also made the pockets she had drawn especially for the hacked version, and I really like the look of them. I struggled with two things: Button holes and placement of the pockets. The button holes widened a bit when I opened them. And it was really hard to both align the pockets and making sure they were straight when I was wearing the jacket. Spoiler: they are not straight. I won’t redo them as I find the fabric prone to fraying, and I can live with some crooked pockets. But other than that - the jacket has definitely been what I hoped for! I wear a windproof jacket underneath when I bike in the cold morning, so I’m glad I made it oversized.

I took last week off to spend some quality time crafting. I wanted to sew some spring/summer wardrobe pieces but also I did pottery and knitting. What else would you even take time off from work for anyway? This is the #mspottersjacket by @modern_sewing_co. I made this jacket some time ago but I've been struggling to style it - likely because of the colour of the fabric. Well, it turns out that all I needed were some blue trousers! So I've finaly took some pictures of it. I can't remember what size I made 😬 (I'll check) and the only alteration was shortening the body by about 5cm. The fabric is deadstock stretch cotton twill from @newcrafthouse. Because of the stretchy nature I messed up my button holes 😭 but a little bit of Fray Check liquid seems to have fixed it.🤞. Buttons are from @merchantandmills For the trousers I've been loving anything with elasticated waist band lately and the #millertrousers have worked pretty good! I will show more of those next time. #memadeeveryday #memade #memadewardrobe #sewing #sewinginspiration #sewyourown #sewist #sustainablefashion #sewistsofinstagram #handmadewardrobe #millenialsewing #makemyclothes #themodernsewer #seamstress

Chapter 21: The Spring Suit from @modern_sewing_co The culmination! At the beginning of the year I signed up for the Spring Suit course from Modern Sewing Co. The class was three months long and included patterns for the shirt, jacket, and pants featured in my last three posts. The course included a forum where all the makers could share their garments and questions. I love being part of the home sewist community, mostly because I love to see people expressing themselves creatively and supporting each other. I frequently see makers trying to create space for everyone, and that is a lovely thing to be a part of. One of the best things about sewing garments is creating something made specifically for a single body. We’re all different, and all bodies deserve clothing that fits well. Huge shout out to @charleslordstyle for helping me choose the fabrics and notions for this suit. I purchased all of this at the now closed (sob) Textile Fabrics, and Charles spent a significant amount of time helping me choose fabrics, color match buttons, and decide how much fabric I would need. Thank you so much for all your help, Charles ❤️ #msunisexshirt #msworkertrouser #mspottersjacket #modernsewingco #memade #memadewardrobe #slowfashion #sewing #thanksimadeit #casualsuit

#sysy #syglede #see #visygale #sew #memade #Fjellsom #fjellsom#minnebamser #memorybears #keepbears #syiull #babysøm #gjenbruk #syom #syinsta #sypent #Janome #Babylock #omsøm #hjemmesydd

When you finish sewing your project, everything seems great, and then you discover that you've still got one piece left... 😅🤦♀️ Another coat. Pattern is the Potters Jacket #mspottersjacket by @modern_sewing_co Made in a size 10 using a wool jacquard coupon from @lestissusduchienvert The coupon was only 140 cm, and the pattern specified 180 cm, but it all more or less fit. I used the DeepNest software to plan how to lay out the pieces and then just had to piece together the back facing from some smaller leftover pieces after I somehow made the size of that piece too small when I was preparing the input file. The instructions were mostly fine, apart from the small welt pocket, which just tells you to re-follow the steps for the main welt pockets. The shape and the pocket bag is different for the smaller pocket, so I didn't find this part very intuitive. I did it wrong the first time and had to unpick and redo, having already cut the opening... Then after finishing the coat I realised I must also have done it wrong the second time, because I discovered when tidying up that I still had one of the pieces for the small welt pocket sitting on the ironing board 🤦♀️ I guess at least I have something left to use for a patch if it ever gets a hole in it! Otherwise the fit and the cut are how I was hoping. I was worried that it was going to be huge whilst I was sewing it, but once the lining was in it was all fine. There are some nice instructions for the finishing, so it feels solidly made, and I'm hopeful it will last a long time. Bring it on winter!

Two months late from completion but today I’m finally feeling ready to reflect on my #mspottersjacket from @modern_sewer . Part of why it took me so long was that I didn’t wear it much after I finished it. I understand much better *why* I didn’t, after wearing it out today. When I first finished it back at the end of Oct, I was hoping it would serve as my warm winter jacket and this just didn’t do it!! I still remember how cold I felt in my first outfit! 🥶 The finished garment was too roomy all around to keep in heat wearing only a cotton long sleeve under. So it got relegated to the ~maybe when Spring comes round~ part of my closet. Fast forward a few weeks/months, I had to learn a lot more about winter dressing, what layering actually entails, acquired my first wool sweaters ever! Since I’ve been in coastal California all my life, I seriously thought cotton long sleeves and sweaters + light jacket *were* winter wear. Now, my winter wardrobe rotation is entirely long sleeves (or thermal) + wool sweater of the day + thick jeans (which I now have three of, previously having been 0) + wool jacket. Today was a bit too warm for my #vikisews_ingrid and I wanted something shorter for my base outfit today. I remembered this existed and figured I’d give it another shot as I went for a walk outside, close enough to go home quickly if I was freezing. To my surprise, this jacket ended up being an excellent layer for a medium cold, mildly raining day like today 🥳 Wearing a sweater under filled out some of the space that was making this jacket feel too large and drafty. The light wool Melton repelled light rain and stayed warm when slightly wet. The mini D ring I attached outside for holding various winter accessories did its job holding my umbrella hands free when it wasn’t needed! Altogether way more delightful to wear, with the right layers underneath now. I’ll share constriction notes in another post. Happy first winter in England for me!

Cold days are definitely creaping in, but there have been a few days warm enough to enjoy this outfit. My twice dyed #mspottersjacket The original colour was fox brown (made up the colour name but feels right), I then used a coffee brown Dylon dye - didn't like the result so I overdyed it with black. And here we are - chocolatey dark brown jacket :). I think the buttons make it though, great quality from @newcrafthouse Corduroy pants are my trusty #msworkertrousers Both pants and jacket patterns are by @modern_sewing_co I had a few people ask me recently where to start with sewing and I always recommend Modern Sewing because of the incredibly well done accompanying video tutorials. The Worker trousers were one of the first things I ever sewed. I bought the video workshop and have come back to it time and time again. When Hetty @modern_sewing_co reached out to see if I could review this pattern #mspottersjacket , I jumped at the opportunity. Since I already have a few short chore coats I decided to make it Ionger by adding 4" to the pattern length . To make the pockets I used the gusset pocket tutorial that I found hidden on her blog (under inspiration board, genius hacks, April 22). I only had 3 of these elephant buttons so the pocket flaps shall remain buttonless. They were also too big for my buttonholer, so had to go freehand! This is my first time lining a jacket and I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was. The pattern includes a genius method for joining the lining and sleeve cuffs. The collar and flaps were originally intended to have the contrast underneath but I loved the fabric so why not! It also breaks up the blue canvas. #modernsewingco #sewover50 #sewover50june #sewover60 #sewover50jacket #blackbirdfabrics #bfcanvas #jennifersampoufabric #sewwhatyoulove #bcsews

A little line up from the studio a while ago. From the top left: Potters Jacket, Classic Shirt, 'mystery piece', Celia Dress, Jesse Jumpsuit, Over Shirt and the Worker Trousers peeking out from behind. I've been wearing the 'mystery piece' (AKA a big raincoat with no name) all autumn and I'm about to develop it further to create a wool coat. This is the next new pattern I'll be working on and I'll be sharing the process as I go. I've chosen a punchy green wool for the next sample so you won't miss it 👀

My #MSpottersjacket has been a life saver this winter. I know that a fully lined jacket can seem like a challenging piece to make so thinking ahead to next year, would people be interested in an online workshop in this style? I could potentially show 2 options, a wool winter version and an unlined summer option in the same workshop. Let me know your thoughts 💭 🤔

modern_sewing_co
Finished my winters #MSpottersjacket in black harris tweed 🐑 For this version I added 18cm to the length and 2cm to each side seam (giving it an extra 8cm width in total). I cut a size 12 again for a bit more room (I’m usually a size 10). I also had a play with developing new pockets. I wanted something jazzier than a classic welt pocket but I found the wool too bulky to fold for patch pockets. In the end I overlocked the edges of the pockets, added little pleats and then topstitched them on. I love the detail of the overlocking on the outside of the garment which is something I haven't done before! They’re also fully lined for extra strength and comfort. I now have 2 new pocket styles for this jacket (see the last post for the waxed cotton version) so I'm currently working on a free pdf download with the pocket patterns. I'll also add instructions on how to add to the length to this style as the lining needs taking into consideration.
