I tend toward (as you may have noticed) more subdued colors and solids, but I love this shirt. I took the time to make the inside extra finished and I feel really proud of how clean it looks. I used French seams for the armholes and side seams. This was also my first try for a double welt pocket and it turned out mostly nice. I made this pattern in the XS last time and I like the slightly oversized fit, but I wanted this to be more fitted. I also used the longest sleeve length, as usual. Other than that, the only change I made was to add contrast fabric to the cuffs and collar. Chapter 11: The Unisex Shirt by @modern_sewing_co Fabric shopping in London is such a dream. Having one great fabric store in the area is a win, but London is a wonderland of fashion and fabric. While I was there I visited Goldhawk Road and let me just say, I could live in those stores. I found this beautiful cotton shirting fabric that I couldn’t pass up. TBH I could have brought back enough fabric to need another suitcase, but that was slightly impractical. Having already made the Classic Shirt by Modern Sewing, I knew I loved the construction techniques and patterns, but wanted to try a slightly different fit. I took extra time to make the inside as beautiful as the outside, finishing with French seams. I think it paid off. I seriously love this shirt. Reunited at last 🐶♥️ We got back from England yesterday and while I already miss it there, it feels good to be home. Four things, some of which were made for one another. 1. Modern Sewing Co Unisex Shirt (@modern_sewing_co #MSUnisexShirt) in an embroidered cotton I found at the Salvation Army Fabric Sale a few years ago. 2. Helen’s Closet Patterns Ashton Top (@helens__closet #AshtonTop)in that fantastic Kaffe Fassett cotton. 3. A self-drafted skirt in that same Kaffe Fasset cotton. 4. A self-drafted skirt in @blackbirdfabrics sandwashed cotton, also from a few years ago. I sewed this Unisex Shirt in 15 minute increments across many, many days after a long period of not sewing. As a direct result, this shirt is patched in three places: at the back yoke and on either sleeve placket. I love this shirt, but I was surprised by how its proportions did and did not fit mine. The fit at the hip is so narrow that I won’t ever wear it untucked—at least not untucked and buttoned. Similar and opposite, the sleeves have a lot of ease. The fit would make a lot more sense if made in a different weight fabric and worn like an overshirt. That’s not to say the fit doesn’t make sense, given it is described and named as “unisex”. I ran out of buttons, so the two buttons holding the plackets closed are contrasting, and it’s my favorite detail that will almost always be hidden in the rolled-up sleeves. The skirts are each simple rectangles the width of the bolt (the sandwashed cotton being about 10” wider than the Kaffe Fassett), with slits and paper bag waists and deep hems. It has come to my attention that I have a set of fairly controversial Mary Jane tan lines. I know exactly what I am doing. I also woke up with one very dry and swollen eye, of which I know a lot less about what I am doing. Warm or cool compress? Let me know.

An outfit I wore earlier this week but forgot to share. I’ve been wanting to make some pleated pants for while and there are so many good options out there, why not make my way through a few a them? First up, the @blackbirdfabrics Taylor trouser and I found a winner on the first go! I’ve made welt pockets on a vest before but for some reason pants made me nervous…nothing to worry about with amazing instructions! I fall between a 14 / 16 and I decided to go with a 14 based off the finished garment measurements which was the right choice - the fit is perfect, especially since twill gives a bit. Only other mod was to shorten 1” before hemming. Oh and I love the addition of the back waistband elastic for the perfect waist support! I used a lovely washed cotton twill from @matchymatchysewingclub which I highly recommend. I’ve been on a sewing blitz the past few days focusing on a much needed pants gap in my wardrobe. I decided to give the Papercut Sera pants a try since I’m in love with the barrel leg shape and in all honesty, I should have stuck with the Coes. The fit on these isn’t bad, I just feel like the balloon shape isn’t balanced and collapses in on itself on the sides (it’s just the outside leg with the shape, inside is normal). I am also between sizes 6 / 7 and decided to cut right in the middle of the two and they were HUGE. I had to take an additional 3/8 (.75”) from each side and they are still roomy. I don’t have much experience with papercut patterns but the finished measurements seem off IMO. I used bull denim from @matchymatchysewingclub (*pr) and I am absolutely in love with this color (called bison brown). It’s an interesting muddy brownish green color which is really pretty and a neutral to me. The #msunisexshirt made for our favorite baker and dearest friend’s birthday. Thank you @artisanlavinia for being my first birthday shirt recipient. Lovely cotton from @designcofabrics in Salt Lake City. I love that the @modern_sewing_co pattern is unisex — making it for all friends and family! This final version is graded between sizes M at chest and S at waist, with an XS cuff, made longer with 2 buttons (11 cm instead of 7 cm, including seam allowance). Used bias tape to enclose the armhole seam and topstitched it in place. Used linen interfacing from #kentontrimmings instead of iron in for collar, collar stand, cuffs, and button placket. After following the @modern_sewing_co workshops for the first rounds of shirt making, it was inspiring to develop new techniques for the cuff placket and for attaching the cuffs and collar that made it even easier. I’m hooked on shirt making now — ready for the next one!

Two @modern_sewing_co #msunisexshirt in the studio today, both with buttons from my mother’s collection. I’m still refining my shirt making skills, especially the cuffs, plackets, and collar. This is a great pattern for the inside looking as nice as the outside. One is a size XS cropped version with contrast collar and cuffs in a @letoffefabrics silk graphic print. The contrast fabric is a beautiful navy cotton from @britexfabrics. The flat-felled seam is challenging on silk so I used a French seam, sewed down after pressing. The other shirt is a size S made for a friend which did not fit so I will make him another one, adjusting between 2 sizes accordingly. It is made from a canvas duck which is sturdy and holds its shape nicely. Luckily it can fit me so it will get used if I shorten or crop it also.

Last hotel room #memademay Made it back home after 17 hours of driving (I'm exhausted). Both of these makes came from the spring capsule wardrobe workshop I did with @modern_sewing_co Shirt is another #msunisexshirt and pants are my first version of the #msworkertrousers. The pants fabric was a super cool find from an old upholstery business that closed down over a decade ago. The son of the owners had a huge warehouse of old fabric bolts that I bought from when I still had no idea what fabrics worked for what. I've since made a duvet cover, these pants, and a shirt for Baxter out of this fabric.

This button down shines bright! 🤩 It’s my third time making this pattern, and finally I nailed the fit for my husband. The last 2 I made fit him fine in the body but he couldn’t lift his arms much. 😝 This time, I made size XL1 according to his chest measurement. For the shoulders and back yoke, I did a broad shoulder adjustment with the slash and spread method and added 1/2” on each side. I also lowered the pocket position down 2”. His measurements - chest 45”, waist 41”, hips 44.5” Pattern - #msunisexshirt by @modern_sewing_co. Pocket template was from the shirting course by @thepatternline Fabric - cotton with neon web print from the former Spool & Spindle fabric shop (been in my stash for a few years).

Another @modern_sewing_co #msunisexshirt this time designed in collaboration with @ivania_dj and made for our dear friend, baker, and all around wonderful person, @artisanlavinia. Scroll to see her inspiration, found after deciding to follow a sustainable approach, using only fabric we had in small pieces, none of which would have made a whole shirt. All stripe fabrics are very fine woven men’s shirting from @britexfabrics and the dark blue cuffs, collar, and yoke, were cut from a @brooksbrothers shirt of my father’s. We also used the buttons from dad’s shirt. Changes include adding the bib front, cut on the bias (12 x 21 cm), extra long cuffs size XS, with 2 buttons, and collar stand sewn without the collar. I’ve been on a #msunisexshirt roll for a while with no plans to stop. Remember the hockey referee shirt I made earlier this summer? (Me neither but if you want to see the starting point, scroll down the grid.) It went through a total transformation and now it’s beginning to look like something I can actually wear. I overdyed it and cropped a significant portion off from the hem. I had to re-stitch some of the topstitching, but there are still some seams and finished seams that remain white. I’ll probably crop the sleeves or make some sort of cuff construction there, but overall I’m very happy to have this garment in my closet! The pattern is #msunisexshirt cut for an oversized fit. Travel outfit ✅ I posted pieces of this before back in May but was waiting to post wear it for this trip. 🛫✈️🛬 Today is a loooong day of traveling so wanted comfy. #msunisexshirt by @modern_sewing_co. I made the front pockets large enough to fit a phone and made them a little deeper. I used pearl snap buttons and they look so nice with this blue linen fabric from @fabricsstorecom. No modifications at all and I love how the pattern offers different length sleeves without having to modify. It was supposed to be a cool, oversized, bold, short sleeved button-up shirt for office days in the summer and autumn. But. I. Just. Can’t. The contrast is too much for me, I look like a hockey referee, and I’m just not the person who can wear this. I modified the #msunisexshirt and graded between several sizes: L for the neck and collar, XL2 for the bodice and shoulders, and XL for the sleeves. The fit is actually just what I wanted. But. I. Just. Can’t. 🥲 And even if it’s cotton, I can’t overdye it because there’s also white topstitching (and white stitching inside).

Chapter 21: The Spring Suit from @modern_sewing_co The culmination! At the beginning of the year I signed up for the Spring Suit course from Modern Sewing Co. The class was three months long and included patterns for the shirt, jacket, and pants featured in my last three posts. The course included a forum where all the makers could share their garments and questions. I love being part of the home sewist community, mostly because I love to see people expressing themselves creatively and supporting each other. I frequently see makers trying to create space for everyone, and that is a lovely thing to be a part of. One of the best things about sewing garments is creating something made specifically for a single body. We’re all different, and all bodies deserve clothing that fits well. Huge shout out to @charleslordstyle for helping me choose the fabrics and notions for this suit. I purchased all of this at the now closed (sob) Textile Fabrics, and Charles spent a significant amount of time helping me choose fabrics, color match buttons, and decide how much fabric I would need. I don’t know why I even try other button up patterns because the @modern_sewing_co Unisex Shirt is literally perfection. This is my 5th one! I did decide to modify the side hem so that it comes up a little bit / more curved to give it a bit of shape because I love wearing button downs fully closed over bigger bottoms. Made the second pattern on my pleated trouser list, the merchant and mills Pegs pant. I’ll be honest, when I first put put these on after I made them, it wasn’t love. But, after a wash and fresh eyes they are pretty darn cute. I made a size 16, only mods was adding belt loops and omitting the leg turn up. Chapter 5: The Unisex Shirt (Dress) by @modern_sewing_co A few months ago I was shopping for a shirt dress and came across a beautiful corduroy version from Sezane. I tried it on, loved it, and then thought, “I bet I can make this.” So I went shopping for patterns instead. I had already used other Modern Sewing Co. patterns and found Hetty’s videos incredibly helpful. I attribute most of what I now know about shirt making to her and her wonderful patterns. I decided to modify the Unisex Shirt because of the boxier fit. I added six inches to the length (I have a very short torso, so it was almost a dress already 🥲) and graded the width up a size toward the bottom. I wanted it to read a little oversized, so I started a couple sizes bigger than I normally would have. It turned out almost exactly how I was imagining it. The plackets were a little more challenging with the bulky material, but good practice nonetheless. Overall, I call it a win. Before I start to share the development work for my mini summer capsule I wanted to share a few pictures from this recent personal sewing project. I created this jacket using the #MSUnisexShirt as a base for the shape and it's turned out to look like a mens version of the #MSpottersjacket pattern. The fabric is a very beautiful @londonclothco twill which I bought from @raystitch along with a royal blue topstitching thread and a contrast pop of yellow for the details. I thought I'd be using a traditional button for this jacket but I found it needed a metal denim button to help it feel a bit more modern. I won't be sharing this garment in depth as it's so far off any of the patterns in the range but I'm so happy with the details that I couldn't resist sharing a few snaps. Flicking through the photos you'll find some development snaps that I took along the way. It really goes to show how far you can push a garment visually after the shell is complete. I slowly add details such as pockets and contrast stitching, starting with the ones I know I definitely want and then building up from there. It's a question of feeling the balance of the design and function as you go and having fun with the creative process 💫✨
