Cara Top
The Modern Sewing Co

Cara Top
The Cara Top is a simple summer blouse with 2 length options - shorter to sit on the hip or longer to hit the top of the thigh. It features french seam construction with options for a double fold hem or a flat binding to finish the hem and armholes. Suitable for light weight cottons and linens.

Some more workwear sewing from earlier in the week š¤āļø Skirt is #reznorskirt from @elbe_textiles in size D. I love this pattern and Iām convinced that this is a great workwear match for me. I removed 10cm to accommodate my shortness (I am 162cm/5ā4). The fabric is a beautiful ponte from Fabric Box which is a little too thick (upwards of 280 gsm?) for both the folds and the self-lining, although I may feel differently in winter. Iām going to remake with a different lining fabric and keep an eye out for other interesting knit options. Iām a little unsure about my feelings for ponte/synthetic fibresā¦.but when I look at my most worn and longest lasting clothes, they tend to have some element of synthetic stretch. Also, this kind of skirt is so practical to cycle to work in š¤ Worn with @modern_sewing_co ās #mscaratop in a very sweet handblock cotton from @joans.finefabric I need to make more of these! #sewworkwear #worktober #patternmatching #sewcyling

Just in time for the summer weather! This is my @modern_sewing_co Cara top (#MSCaraTop) in a fun summery gingham seersucker bought via @destash4palestine I was between sizes on the recommended measurements for this pattern so based on the bust measurement I sized down. I changed the collar to a frill hack (mostly following the post on the modern sewing co's website), and bound the neckline and armhole seams with bias binding. I also added more buttons just for visual effect. And I sewed the shorter version. Other than that- no adjustments. What do I think of this pattern? There are definitely things I could change to get the "perfect fit", but I have a top here that I know will get a lot of wear. I love the frill collar (and the normal collar as part of the pattern is really cool) -it really elevates this top. I like that it's fitted around shoulders and bust and then kicks out around the waist (and hips if you make the longer version), making this a really airy summer top. Related to the pattern instructions - they are good. I like that this company focuses on beautiful seam finishes, so they are always included as seam finishing options (while still always having the easier option for beginners first). E.g. the bias binding needed for bias seam finishes is included as a pattern piece. And the real question - would I make this pattern again? Yes definitely! I will wear this one for a while- I like to see over time what I like and don't like. And this then influences any changes I might make. I'm also half tempted to length this pattern to a dress... So watch this space! Worn here with my @soften_studio #CloBiasSkirt #MeMadeEveryday

Spring outfit. I have made the Closet Core Pietra pants and the Modern Sewing Co Cara top in these two coordinating Atelier Brunette fabrics from Lamazi fabrics. I think the top may be half a size too small across the bust which I will rectify next time I make it, which I definitely will. I ADORE the beautiful inside finish on all the Modern Sewing Co patterns Iāve made and this french seamed top with bound hem and armholes is no exception. The Pietra pants are a known quantity although Iām quite pleased to have matched the checks down the front leg seam !

Letās talk about bodice fitting. I made this linen Cara top by @modern_sewing_co back in August after seeing Hettyās hacked version on IG. The fitting process was a real eye opener for me ā I always thought that I needed certain adjustments to get a bodice to fit well (the heavy hitters being: forward shoulder, narrow shoulder, round back, and full bust adjustments), but guess what? I was wrong! I didnāt need any of that. Yes, I did make adjustments to get a great fit (last image), but I didnāt need any of the body-part specific ones we all know and hate. I took a different approach to fitting this time around, one directly influenced by Ruth Collins (@ithacamaven) and her work on pants fitting. Many of the main concepts behind Top Down Center Out can apply to all garments, not just pants. Discussions with Ruth over the summer helped me see the bodice fitting process with a new perspective. I just shared a blog post with all the details, and Iāll put a few highlights in stories. āļøPattern details: š top: very hacked Cara top by the Modern Sewing Company š jeans: worship jeans by Daughter Judy š denim overshirt: second hand Apiece Apart #mscaratop #modernsewingco #msco2023

The hacked #mscaratop by @modern_sewing_co using my Dadās work shirt and scraps from my Momās vintage skirt, also redesigned (see previous post for details). A labor of love, honoring their love, for each other and me and my siblings, coincidentally inspired to create this at a poignant moment for them and us. This is day 4 of #memademay2024 and I am wearing something new and something older. For this month I try to combine handmade pieces to get a better understanding of what I like and want to sew in the future as well as how to adjust fit to my body. This is the #mscaratop which is part of my ongoing #summercapsulewardrobe course and a #mmevetrousers I made a few years ago. Both arw made from cotton and feel very comfy and classic #handsewn #sewing #memademay

Wearing the #mscaratop by @modern_sewing_co in a beautiful and soft cotton by @atelier_to_naniiro_textile. I managed to use all the fabric with so little waste, this made me very happy #nowaste. The top has a mandarin collar and wooden buttons. I made no mods to this piece, and it turned out long enough 𫶠Inside, I've sewn all seams as French seams and used bias binding for the hem and armholes in the same fabric. It's a super neat finish and frankly my favourite way to finish a garment. I am such a sucker for a pretty inside 𤣠The trousers are the #mmevetrousers by @merchantandmills in size 10 in a cotton toile fabric. #sewing #memade #sewingproject #capsulewardrobe #näheninbiel #monochromeoutfit

Itās still quite warm so I made this Cara top by @modern_sewing_co for some early fall layering. I had gaping front armholes like in every top I made this year so I had to put in extra darts to get rid of it. The quilting fabric is from the #duvalfabric series that I especially love in this colorway š #agfduval #mscaratop #sewing #nƤhen #klamottennƤhen #suzyquilts #suzyquiltsfabric #plussizesewing

Like many things in life, for this project, I did not know the full extent of the steps i would take, only the first one. After that it became clear what was next and so on until the project was complete. In this case the first step was shortening the skirt. It was not only too long for me, the full length limited its wearability to formal occasions. Shortening it also provided one row of patchwork which was refashioned into the skirt belt, the shirt collar, and the shirt hem. The original shirt was my fathers; the remake is based on Hettyās #mscaratop using her #mscarahacks. I made the collar a little larger to cover the cut top of the original shirt button placket. The original skirt was my mothers, ā70ās vintage, on which I replaced the ribbon wrap tie with buttons and the gathers with 4 pleats in the back. I debated between the Cara top and a few other designs but Iām so happy I went with this one. It preserved the button placket, and the shirt pocket with its small pen stains, which are meaningful. Together they make a very sweet combination. Just like the last photo, a few years ago, the three of us were in a local restaurant in my hometown, and as I reached for my phone to take their photo, my father reached for my mother and pulled her close to him, in a gesture I hadnāt seen for years. And just like that the magic of photography captured the moment. Much has happened since then but that moment, like many before it, lives on. Their love lives on in this outfit, a combination of his and hers.

Whipped up this ensemble for a work trip to Hawaiāi! It was so nice to make something quick and fun. The #mscaratop is a size 14 with neck and armhole binding and extra buttons. I cropped/straightened the hem and took in about 3cm from front and back at each side seam. I bought lots of this cotton twill with a dress in mind but itās quite transparent, so I made a simple voluminous skirt to match the top. Highly recommend walking along the promenade to watch the sunset in a two-piece šš

008 With those first few feverish makes out of my system, I realised I wanted to develop my skills with a little more consideration than the āfuck around and find outā approach Iād been taking. I wanted to know which of my mistakes were easily avoidable, I wanted to learn the little details and sophisticated finishes that Iād sometimes see in my IG feed. I wanted to be able to make beautiful things and make them well, and everything The Modern Sewing Co. shared seemed like magic to me, so I invested in The Wardrobe Workshop. The first piece in the set is the Cara Top, which Iād seen Hetty hack into a simple summer crop and wanted to try for myself. Because Iām a moron, I thought that having pro videos to follow would suddenly make me very good at sewing so I visited Drapers for the first time to buy The Good Fabric for my imminent, inevitably perfect projects. Quelle surprise, Iām still shit at sewing, but I chopped into my first piece of ~special~ stuff (a light, plain bit of black cotton lol) with great, oblivious gusto. Turns out working with light fabric is tricky (sleeve puckers pictured). Who knew? You knew. I also didnāt know how much ease youāre meant to allow around your chest (bust pulling pictured) and I, of course, didnāt make a toile. I love this top because it signifies the start of my Next Phase of sewing, but it doesnāt fit quite right. I want to crop it straight and bring it in and increase the room around the neck and fix the bust and I donāt really know how to do any of those things yet but I genuinely canāt wait to learn. DETAILS The @modern_sewing_co #MSCaraTop in a lightweight cotton from @drapersfabrics. Size 12, shorter length, sans collar. Finished 23 June 2024.

Iāve been wearing my #mscaratop from @modern_sewing_co all summer. Literally. I sewed this one up in a linen a while back. I tried to go for some decorative topstitching which looks cute but in the future Iād go for some thicker thread (I didnāt know topstitching thread was a thing!) The pattern was very detailed and the video instructions super helpful for someone like me who had never made a button stand before. #sewing #memade #memadeveryday #capsulewardrobe #mscaratop #modernsewing

Summer capsule round up anyone? If you missed the start of this project, back in May I set myself the challenge of creating a mini capsule collection using my PDF patterns range. I wanted it to be totally interchangeable and functional - a range of 6 pieces I could pack to take on a weekend away and not need anything else.⣠I absolutely loved working on this project and I've written up my thoughts up for this weekends 'long read' which will hit your inboxes on Sunday morning ā⣠Wearing above: ⣠#MScaratop #MSspringtrousers #MSworkertrousers⣠...

It's been a few weeks since I was last working on making my mini summer capsule. With the launch of the new pattern updates I've had my eye off the ball with it but I'm excited to say I'm getting back to it this week. If you missed the introduction of this idea, I've been making my own mini summer capsule and sharing the process. You can catch up by reading the blog called 'How to Make a Summer Capsule' - I've put the direct link in the bio. Have a swipe for the pieces that have already been completed along with my original mood board. The photos were taken on every camera device I own (digital, film and phone) so there is no visual consistency which bothers me. But you get the idea... 1 - #MSceliadress hack 2 - #MSclassicshirt with short sleeves 3 - #MSdaphnetrousers as shorts 4 - #MScaratop without the collar (and a little bit more fitted and cropped) 5 - #MSworkertrousers with a pin-tuck hack . You can catch up on the details of all of these makes on the blog! Just one left to go, I've thought of a new hack idea and I'm very excited to make it.

Matchy matchy wedding guest set š This is the #MSCaraTop and #MSSpringTrousers. I loved the silk version of this set that Hetty from @modern_sewing_co made for herself, so I decided to make my own. I used some beautiful emerald green silk from @newcrafthouse which is so floaty and breathable. For the top I made a size 12 in the shortened version. I couldnāt find any buttons that I loved that complimented the green, so I adjusted the pattern to add a hidden button placket. For the trousers I made a size 10 and the only modification I made was to lengthen the legs by a couple of inches. I could have done with lengthening the crotch a bit as well (and Iāll do this if I make these trousers again). The #mscaratop by @modern_sewing_co was a warmup project for the capsule wardrobe course starting in February. I love this make and decided to make a second one that will actually be part of the capsule as it will be in a colour tone that works with the rest of the fabrics. This fabric is a cotton satin bought as a bed sheet in sale a few weeks ago⦠it is actually a great way to get a big amount of good fabric for a good price.
