Spring Trousers
The Modern Sewing Co

Spring Trousers
The Spring Trousers have a high waist with a thick waistband that has a semi-elasticated back for comfort. The legs are full length and wide with front pleats to add volume. They can be made in a range of fabrics from linens and light cottons to heavier fabrics like denim, wool suiting, and corduroy.

Matchy matchy wedding guest set 💚 This is the #MSCaraTop and #MSSpringTrousers. I loved the silk version of this set that Hetty from @modern_sewing_co made for herself, so I decided to make my own. I used some beautiful emerald green silk from @newcrafthouse which is so floaty and breathable. For the top I made a size 12 in the shortened version. I couldn’t find any buttons that I loved that complimented the green, so I adjusted the pattern to add a hidden button placket. For the trousers I made a size 10 and the only modification I made was to lengthen the legs by a couple of inches. I could have done with lengthening the crotch a bit as well (and I’ll do this if I make these trousers again). There’s a definite wedgie but I think I’m just about getting away with it? #NewCraftHouseFabric #NewCraftHouse #ModernSewingCoPattern #ModernSewingCo #MeMade #MeMadeWardrobe #HandmadeWardrobe #MadeByMe #Sewist #IMakeMyOwnClothes #MakingClothes #Dressmaking #SewistsOfInstagram #DIYWardrobe #DIY #IMadeThis #IMadeIt #ModernSewists #MillenialSewist #MillenialSewing #LondonSews #SewQueer #SewingTall

Silly face brought to you by my neighbour walking in on my OOTD photo sesh 😳😳😳 Sharing my #msspringtrousers fresh off the machine! I would like to thank Gen Z for their commitment to huge pants for making these possible for me to wear. I had to fight my urge to shorten or narrow them and I’m glad I did (although I narrowed them a bit for fit lol) Altogether a very nice pattern. I like it a lot more on then I did looking at the samples or pattern flats. The tiny little pleats with the tiny little buttons is very nice and balanced and it has great volume in the leg. They were comically long in the longest length- I’m the exact height they draft for and I had to cut off 4 inches of the leg. I also found the instructions a bit sparse- I’ve made two other pairs of @modern_sewing_co pants (Daphne and worker trousers) and found those more substantial. The waistband of these pants in particular could have used some more detail. I found the back view a little lacklustre - there’s a lot of wrinkling over the butt that I think is intentional after I studied the samples. It does make them very comfy and the front is gorgeous so I’ve decided it’s fine and I don’t care too much. I didn’t take a pic bc of said neighbour arriving and my embarrassment Made in a UK 18/ US 14, only mods were to shorten them 4 inches, do my standard knock knee adjustment, and take in 3/8” from the side seam to reduce the amount of flare from the waistband to the hip #sewistsofinstagram #canadiansewing

On being Femme: (Details of the trousers in the comments) Over the past year I have been musing on my gender and specifically how I feel about my own gender identity and being a Femme lesbian. I am a Femme and I love being so but I feel a deep discomfort on how femme is used by (typically cis people who are not lesbians) because it feels over simplistic, highly reductive, and perscriptive; people see femme lesbians a lesser more socially acceptable face of lesbianism, they use it to erase my queerness, as synonymous with pretty, and they use it to box me into what they think femme should be. When I discuss my desire to bind my chest, to wear more masculine clothes, to not shave my body, to want to cut my hair I am told categorically that these things are not for me and that by pursuing and desiring the above I am trying to be someone who I am not. Yes I bind my chest sometimes. And I don't really shave. And I want to dress more androgynous because for a long time dressing more feminine was my only option and until I starting sewing I couldn't even really wear trousers because they did not fit my body. Sewing has given me an avenue to pursue this and had given me more depth and meaning to how I present and perform being Femme but I am not a femme because of my aesthetic - I am femme because despite how I look and that I could stealth I wear my identity loud and proud, because I desire and defend butchness, female masculinity, and all gender non conforming lesbians because I am not me without them. My comfort with you using Femme to describe me, even though I use it myself, hinges on how you see the Femme Lesbian identity in conjunction with the Butch Lesbian identity. If you think butch is ugly, or as lesser then I do not want you to call me Femme. If you call me femme because you think I'm pretty then I don't want you to call me femme. If you think that femme is more valuable and better than butch, then I don't want you to call me femme.

Modern Sewing’s Spring Trousers and Classic Shirt. These pants have been so hard to photograph…turns out the best shots are the ones where I’ve not done up the second button, just so you know. I modified the pattern quite a bit as I went, so they were also a roller coaster ride to sew. But people keep on asking me about them…I’m taking this as a sign that my machinations have worked🔮 Notes: @modern_sewing_co #msspringtrousers in a beautiful heavyweight navy linen from @wearethefabricstore Size 10 with 2cm removed from both side and inseams and a significant amount of volume removed from the seat of the pants by carving out the back seam. My measurements put me at a size 8 in waist and 14 in hip, so I knew I could make adjustments until I got the back waist area sitting high and flat, then adjust the size of the curved waistband. To keep this area relatively neat, the elasticated panel only sits in the small of back and is about half the length of the pattern. The trousers sit at my natural waist which is quite high, meaning that I lost a bit of length - I cut the middle length and I would’ve liked them to be a tad longer (I’m 162cm). The waistband has also been reduced by a third so it wouldn’t fold in half sitting on my natural waist and I added belt loops. So many changes! I think I’ve been left with some drag lines along the inner leg seam, but I’ve thus far avoided the worst of the bagged out bum that I have with my other linen pants so I’m not fussed. I’m still very tempted to add welt pockets to the back…maybe next time. #sewworkwear #msclassicshirt

Todays challenge has been fly construction in my #msspringtrousers Concentration levels needed to be at 9! That’s it in on one side and tacked in on the second and I think it’s ok 🤞🤞🤞 Really technical sewing is HARD! #memade #memadewardrobe #sewistsofinstagram #themodernsewingco

In autumn I love nothing more than a really heavy pair of Spring Trousers #MSspringtrousers - these are made from 12oz twill from @merchantandmills and I love them. I scooped out a tiny bit of volume from the back crotch - from 0cm at the waist to 1.5cm down the back seam and back to 0cm at the inside leg seam. This helped to remove a bit of bulk from the back which has less flexibility when made in a heavier fabric. This cut works really well with the new Boat Neck pattern #MSboatnecktop as it balances the volume nicely. . I'm thinking of adding some outfit pairings to the website to offer 2 or 3 patterns that work well together at a slightly cheaper price... thoughts?

The #MSspringtrousers are the comfiest trouser in the range and such a flattering cut for all body shapes. Shown above in a multitude of fabrics, you can make it in almost anything and it will take on a new meaning - from silk to linen or corduroy to poplin. Another make from the Six Month Capsule Collection Course from @modern_sewing_co These are #msspringtrousers made in @fabricgodmother ‘Maggie’ viscose crepe which I love! The trousers are a wonderful loose but flattering fit and super comfy with a partly elasticated waist. I made a size 12 with no alterations and am very happy with the way they fit in this drapey crepe. #sewover50

Wedding outfit ideas 💛 I love wearing silk and I also love seeing how different fabrics can transform how a pattern looks and feels. The pieces listed below work as beautifully in silk as they do linen and cottons so they're great choices for weddings or special occasions. 1 - Cara Top & Spring Trousers - silk waffle weave 2 - Spring Top & cami (simple self draft) - silk satin 3 - Sienna Dress - silk taffeta 4 - Jesse Jumpsuit with a tie belt - silk satin 5 - Darcy Trench Coat to throw over all of the above - gabardine . #MScaratop #msjessejumpsuit #MSspringtrousers #MSdarcycoat #mssiennadress

A blue silk two piece for a gorgeous destination wedding! The trousers are @modern_sewing_co spring trousers which are an amazing pair of trousers, swishy, big pockets and incredibly comfortable (half elastic waist) whilst still looking well tailored. I was really inspired by a yellow wedding set that Hetty made with these trousers, but I wanted to do a fancy top rather than a shirt on the top half. I chose the garden dress top by @fruxstudio which I’d seen all over ig and admired for some time. The pintucks took a while and I found it hard to keep them consistent but I’m very happy with the overall effect! The fabric is a silk noil from @empressmills1927 . I really love raw silk like this, it’s much more affordable than the shinier finer stuff but I think the mix of slubby texture, drape and weight is a lovely balance of rustic and luxurious. I bought the silk undyed and experimented with mixing a few procion dyes until I got the teal colour I wanted #fsgardenblouse #fsgardendress #fruxstudio #msspringtrousers #modernsewingco #weddingsewing

✨️Trousers of my Dreams✨️ Over the past 6 months, I have been yearning for a leopard print fabric, that wasn't cartoonish, with a plain neutral background, on non stretch denim* and fabric godmother delivered. This fabric is beautiful to work with and beautiful to wear, its £££ but feels worth it now that it's all sewn up. I know I will get a lot of wear out of these so the price is justified. The trouser are, unsurprisingly, the Modern Sewing Co Spring Trousers. I've waxed lyrically about my love for this trouser pattern many times and this is my 5th pair but only 3 are in rotation (with 1 being a linen pair so technically only two if we're talking seasonal suitability, the other two are out of rotation because they either dont fit or have been damaged beyond repair). I do intend to make at least 1 more pair because they're my favourite trouser pattern to sew up, and my most reached for piece to wear also. I love them, you know that, I know that, I'm sure Modern Sewing Co is also aware by now how much I love them. They're the same size and adjustments as my last pair I am currently on a mission to sew through my current fabric stash, and I'm not on a fabric ban but I am only buying fabric that I have a solid plan for at the time of purchase. Thankfully, I am currently on my creative break so I do have the luxury of spending time on this. *we need to free ourselves from the reign and popularity of stretch denim and corduroy on the fabric market (unless its deadstock). Please. I beg. Let's do 100% cotton denim and corduroy. Both soften over time, they last better over time. I personally find them better to last over time with more certainty and consistency and also don't curl under high heat #MSSpringTrousers #ModernSewingCo #FabricGodmother #SewQueer #MeMadeWardrobe

Summer capsule round up anyone? If you missed the start of this project, back in May I set myself the challenge of creating a mini capsule collection using my PDF patterns range. I wanted it to be totally interchangeable and functional - a range of 6 pieces I could pack to take on a weekend away and not need anything else. (Brief discussion about weight) Pattern: Spring Trousers by @modern_sewing_co Size 18 with 1cm added to front and back crotch curve Fabric from @croftmillfabric Logically, I know that one of the benefits of sewing your own clothes is that you can make them to fit your body. But if I am honest, spending time making clothes and then out growing them because you've put weight on doesn't feel great. I absolutely dragged my feet about re-tracing this pattern out in a larger size because in the back of my mind I believe that I am going to drop the weight quickly and fit back into my old clothes. I have been thinking this for the past 5 months. I did find the willpower to retrace the pattern in the size 18 and once the paper pattern was put away I completely forgot that this was even the larger size but I did notice that I felt more comfortable and confident in the larger size because at the end of the day I deserve to feel good in the clothes I am wearing regardless of what size they are and regardless of if I want to be that size or not. Internalising shame around weight gain doesn't benefit me and it likely does not benefit you either I might lose weight. I might not. I might need to retrace my patterns. I might not. I'm making clothes for the body I have now and not the body I had a year ago (Also, I think this pattern is wildly slept on by the sewing community. I think they're such a good everyday trousers) #MeMadeWardrobe #MSSpringTrousers #SewQueer

My second Modern Sewing Classic shirt in a beautifully crisp cotton from The Fabric Store. The little red bartack where the sideseam meets the curve hem is my very favourite thing. #msclassicshirt Size 10. I extended the sleeve placket by 3cm to cover a small tear in the fabric that didn’t notice when cutting. I also added about 3cm to the cuff, to which I thought about adding a second button…but opted to keep it simple. #sewworkwear #msspringtrousers #wearethefabricstore

The #msjaimejacket is a men's jacket that works great for women too (if you can keep your hands on it for long enough). I'm 5ft 10 and this is a size L which is a really nice loose fit although if I was making it for myself I'd use one of the shorter sleeves that's included in the pattern. I'm REALLY looking forward to some post-Christmas pictures of happy receivers of this piece 🎄🤗 Worn here with the #MSspringtrousers in a heavy brushed twill from @merchantandmills which I love.

Did someone say texture? We are suckers for a bit of texture at P.S.C, in fact we are generally more drawn to texture than print. We love how it adds dimension to a garment, breaks up even a monochromatic outfit and how it gives even simple, classic shapes a high end, designer feel. Our Mara Linen Blend from @meetmilk_fabric is one of our favourites for its texture and functionality. This beautiful blend of Tencel™ and Linen is both practical and luxurious. At 200gsm this fabric is perfect for a drapey pair of trousers (#zwblockpant or #msspringtrousers), a cool jacket (#thompsoncoat), comfy jumpsuit (#zadiejumpsuit or #mssjessejumpsuit) or a versatile transeasonal dress (#msceliadress or #baronsdress)…. To name but a few! Also, it’s the perfect pair for our Organic Cotton Sewing Thread (currently on offer - see previous post or website for details). 👇🏿What would you make out of it? I was recently a groomswoman at a good friend's wedding and was given a brief for a cream-coloured suit. Needless to say I immediately knew exactly which patterns I would be making 😏 The trousers are my favourite trouser pattern- #msworkertrousers by @modern_sewing_co . I actually wanted to make the #msspringtrousers initially but was silly and didn't order enough fabric.. nevertheless I love the workers and they have already had a lot of wear in my day to day life since i've made them! The jacket is the #Heatherblazer by @fridaypatterncompany which i've only ever made once as an occasion piece, so unfortunately it hasn't gotten much wear. I've been meaning to make it again in a neutral colour and so this was a perfect excuse! I also lined it with some leftover block print fabric which I was pretty pleased with until i noticed the day after wearing this outfit that the dyes had stained the tops of my trousers green 😢 (luckily it's subtle enough that it hasn't stopped me wearing them) The fabric is a lovely cotton/linen blend with a bit of stretch from @minervadotcom , gifted as part of the ambassador scheme. I have to say I'm really leaning more towards natural fibres with a bit of elastane content as the fabric creases so much less. I have no idea how that impacts its sustainability so if anyone is the wiser I would love to be educated! Underneath I've worn the #rovingromper by @bygraciesteel although admittedly for the actual wedding I hastily sewed up a satin sicily slip blouse to go under it, but i wasn't a huge fan and actually much prefer it with the romper underneath. Fabric for the romper is a beautiful punti di milano (i.e. fancy ponteroma) from @dittofabrics and is pretty delicious to wear. #memade #memadeeveryday #imadethis #isewmyownclothes #slowfashion #sewfun #sewingismytherapy #sewingismysuperpower

My next @modern_sewing_co make in the works 👌🏼 This fabric does look a bit crazy but luckily it’s just for a wearable toile where the sleeves will be shortened into a #lodsshirt 👯♂️ although I’m never opposed to a bit of a crazy shirt 👀 This past year has been the year I said I didn’t want to buy clothing for myself (bar le wedding dress and anything else associated with my wedding👰🏻♀️- I think that’s a fair pass) Trends seem to be changing so quickly, our personal styles are just that and prices of clothing seem to skyrocket or plummet depending on where you are sourcing your clothes🥴 I am lucky enough that in PE I have a great spot for up to date dead stock fabric, lots of beautifully curated and reasonable fabric shops in my local area and a love for sewing🌼 This pattern comes from what has to be my favorite pattern maker @modern_sewing_co ❤️ and the past year I have made #msworkertrousers , #msspringtrousers #msclassicshirt #msribsweater #msjessejumpsuit and #msceliadress ❤️ each item has been super wearable with an incredible fit, has taught me something new and grown my sewing abilities🔆 This #msunisexshirt is going to be for the lovely and ever patient Chip Gough ❤️❤️ Updates and fit in the next day or so and then on to the linen fabric for a final 👏 If you look closely my scissors are chewed courtesy of @kubu_the_staffy 🥴 #smallbusiness #handmade #southafrica #swimwear #swim #summer #activeliving #beach #proudlySA #madeinsa #southafricasews #activewear #supportsmall #slowfashion #sewist #memade #handmadewardrobe #sew #sewistsofinstagram #sewingproject #memadewardrobe
