Sunday Trackies
The Modern Sewing Co

Sunday Trackies
The Sunday Trackies are designed for comfort with a roomy, slouchy fit. This simple pattern is great for beginners, featuring stretch stitch seams and a small amount of topstitching. Recommended fabrics include jersey (fleece or french terry) or soft wool with an elastic waistband and drawstring.

During Aotearoa’s summer I joined the @modern_sewing_co winter capsule course. It was full of excellent tutorials and advice/inspiration from other makers! Here is my full outfit (coat details below but other garments are in recent posts). Happy to share the comfiest coat ever: the #MSdarcycoat. I thought this make would be really challenging and because of that, I worked slowly and carefully and only had to unpick once(!!). The pattern and extra course tutorials were so clear that it felt surprisingly straightforward to make a lined coat – highly recommend! Made in a beautiful wool twill with a cotton/silk lining (a bit noisy with so much cotton tbh) and corozo buttons. It’s the short version in size 14 (following my bust measurement) which is nice and roomy for chunky knits underneath. I’d maybe size down for a more refined long coat. I love how customisable the pattern is – I chose the pointed collar, no sleeve tab, and two welt pockets. (Could not for the life of me get weave direction on the welts to correspond with the coat, but c’est la vie.) Worn with the #MSovershirt #MSfridashirt & #MSsundaytrackies.

Remember that late ‘80s and early ‘90s fashion movement- trying to get that narrow, tapered silhouette before skinny jeans were even a thing? You’d pinch the side seam in, fold it over, and then roll up the cuff a couple of times to lock the fold in place. “Pegged jeans” was the legit, innocent fashion term… though these days, it’s definitely taken on a very different (and very NSFW) meaning 😆. The fold-over waistband was another signature Gen X trend. It had a kind of causal, nonchalant rebellion to it. These #mssundaytrackies from Modern Sewing Co. are a reimagined nod to that unmistakable Gen X style, with the fold-over waistband and the ankle pinch roll I added for a perfectly locked-in nostalgic, tapered finish. A reminder that this era of style never really left and its revival feels natural, if not completely inevitable. Pattern: Sunday Trackies @modern_sewing_co Fabric: Organic Cotton Fleece @corefabrics 390 gsm/11.5 oz/yd² 20% on grain stretch 25% on the cross grain stretch Made in Canada :) Thread: Mettler col. 0791 Drawstring: Merchant and Mills Italian flat drawstring 80% recycled cotton, 20% cotton Colour: Navy Pattern Notes: * I reversed the waistband so the drawstring channel is on the inside of the pants (instead of facing outward as in the original design). The drawstring would then face outwards with the intentional folded-over style. To do this, I attached the waistband with the drawstring side facing outwards * Shortened the length by 2” for a slightly cropped fit. (I am 5’4” for reference) * For a tapered finish, I added two-1” box pleats 0.5” from either side of the outside side seam and stay-stitched in place at 3/8” * Reduced the ankle cuff height by 1” for a slimmer finish at the hem. I like a pseudo (half-messy) roll at the cuff

Day 8 - pm edition of #memademay2025 In the evening I usually change into comfy lounge wear, especially as the temperature drops in Autumn • Le Sweat Parfait #lesweatparfait by @maison_essentielle_ by was very kindly given to me by a sewing friend in Geneva who thinks it’s the best sweatshirt pattern around! I had leftover scraps of this blue and rust sweatshirting so decided to combine them to make a colour blocked version … I initially made a size M as it’s all the fabric would allow, but it was a bit snugger than desired - so I got creative and added contrast panels in the side and sleeves, plus a little piece in the centre back waistband! I was worried it might have been a bit too much but I actually love the end result! 🩵🤎 • Sunday Trackies #mssundaytrackies - now I have a (somewhat) matching set!

Here are my #MSSundayTrackies by @modern_sewing_co in a needle cord and laundered cotton poplin (a wearable toile that serves as a summer weight). Fit wise, they’re both 18 at the hip graded to 20 at the waist (due to the woven fabric), with the elastic cut to 16. I wanted the poplin version to sit higher on my waist, so redid the waistband by doubling the height and adding ‘paper bag’ channels. For the cord version, I lengthened the rise by 3cm and the leg by 8cm (rather than using the cuffs). Mods wise, the front patch pockets are from a MS co capsule course and I also used French seams everywhere. I omitted the drawstring and they don’t stay up super well (I think because the elastic isn’t great, which is a shame as it’s NZ made). I may need to redo the waistband at some point, and would probably use the opportunity to give the cord pants a paper bag waist too – I really love it! Overall, they’re a great pant and the pattern is so adaptable.

I haven’t updated for a while, but I have been making a few things! I’m not making anything that needs to be fitted too much as I’m on a serious weight loss challenge! These @modern_sewing_co #mssundaytrackies are a very easy make, and very cosy in this fleece back sweatshirt fabric! #memadewardrobe #memade

I wanted a quick win so I decided to make the long sleeve top by @makeityoursthelabel without the ruched sides. I measured at a size 36 and selected a viscose rib knit. Boy was that a mistake. Because the fabric was so stretchy, the top ended up being fairly loose rather than being fitted. Also, the sleeves ended up being super long (refer to my last pic for reference). It’s still a cute top, but as it didn’t work out exactly how I wanted the thought of hemming it seemed like too much. So in the end I shortened the sleeves and did a really rough hem. I know it’ll be used as PJs and it’s still cute and cosy so it was a win after all. Worn here with my first ever @modern_sewing_co #mssundaytrackies

Winter is coming, or here. I’m not sure. And I hadn’t sewn in ages, work has been full on and moving house has been a pig. I feel like I might be coming down with something. So it was time to make something cute again, something cosy and nice. My friend @philiybob had been talking about making things out of fleece. Her planned projects are more ambitious than mine, but I thought it may be a good idea so enter the #mssundaytrackies by @modern_sewing_co I made a pair of these before in a size 6 and found them a little too loose on me. Nonetheless I wear them all the time because the fit is very flattering and they are so cosy so I decided to size down to a 4 this time and just extended the recommended length of elastic a little bit. I rummaged around to see what fabric I had available and I found this violet fleece waaaay at the back of the cupboard. It’s so exciting to use up a piece of my stash, and I actually think the violet colour is really flattering. If you need me I’ll be living in these for the next few days. They’re incredibly warm and cosy. I’d like to make another pair but lined with ripstop so I can easily slide them right on over a pair of leggings. I feel like that would be perfect for a comping trip 🏕️

#handmadenovember2024 day 3: #mssundaytrackies by @modern_sewing_co , a #nestsweatshirt by @sewliberated and handknitted socks (knitted by my mum😍). Because I don‘t feel comfortable wearing old cloth at home in my freetime, I started sewing my homewear clothes a few years ago. That doesn‘t mean I only wear These things at home😁 #handmadenovember #sewersofinstagram

It’s been pretty cold here, around 10-14 C so I haven’t been that inspired to sew summer clothes. Instead I made up these two #MarloSweater from @TrueBias in a heavy sweat shirting. My idea being I could use them to make summer dresses wearable! I made the green one first and thought since it didn’t seem that stretchy, I would add 4cm to each band – the neckband and the waist band. I really needn’t have and didn’t do so to the red one. My conclusion is that the shorter band sits better around the neck on the red one, but I quite like the longer waistband on the green one. I also added 2cm to the wrist cuffs on the green one, but not to the red. I’ve now made about six Marlos, including a few of the longer version. I like both versions, though I find the short one goes with more things like skirts, dresses and high-waisted wide leg trousers. This fabric is a thick brushed sweatshirting of 80% cotton, 20% polyester and I couldn’t get my machine to make buttonholes – even though I had tested successfully. That’s why I ended up using snaps. I have been able to use buttonholes on ‘soft sweat shirting’ in 95% cotton 5% lycra. The tracksuit bottoms are the @modern_sewing_co #mssundaytrackies of which I’ve made three and wear at least once a week. I love the shape and they’re really comfortable. The stripe Tee is the #JacksonTee from @Helens__Closet. I really love this pattern for a loose, casual long-sleeve Tee. I’ve also made the hoodie version several times (sizing up two sizes for the hoodie). #sewover50Mayl #IrelandSews #SewIreland #ThanksIMadeIt #handmadewardrobe #so50visible #isewmyownclothes #curvysewingcollective #Sewover50 #sewover60 #so50pants #so50tops #fatsewover50 #Fatsewingclub #CSCMakes #sewistsofinstagram #Imakemyownclothes

As there was a fabric parcel on the doorstep when I got home, as I had done my laundry and as it was raining there was no reason not to sew. I felt a post-swim throw on set for going to and from the pool in the autumn so I’ve made this outfit which I am calling the ´post pool prisoner’ look. I jest, I have made the Chalk and Notch Page Hoodie for the top and the Sunday Trackies from The Modern Sewing Co for the bottoms. I haven’t made the Page Hoodie before but I like it a lot. My only mod was to put elastic in the waistband channel. I have made the Sunday trackies before and have always been slightly irritated by the lack of front pockets which I have added for this version. I’ve also lengthened them and put on a conventional ribbing cuff rather than the original turn up. Both makes in lovely See You At Six French Terry from Lamazi fabrics.

I’m not generally that keen on joggers but I read so many rave reviews about the shape of the #mssundaytrackies I thought I’d give them a try. I’m so glad I did, it’s all true! I saved something! This is Modern Sewing Co. #mssundaytrackies and #msribsweater The fabric was deadstock French Terry and it doesn’t have much recovery and the loops on the back unravel at the cut edge. (Think old school French Terry 😬) I fixed the bottoms. They were thrown onto a fix/save pile ages ago. For some reason this was the project I decided to tackle. I put a new waistband on and tapered the side seams to my preference. I’m quite pleased. I’m sure I’d like it better if it was black 😆. #memadeeveryday #memadereworn #frenchterry #loungewear #sewcanadian #dirtymirrorselfie #sewover50december #sewover50plus #sewover60

I am a beginner quilter so I am really pleased with this, my fourth finished quilt, even though there are plenty of slightly wonky bits. It’s the first top I put together but I needed to finish the other three for Christmas presents first. This one is for the daybed in my husband’s office where he sometimes takes a nap! I used a wave stitch built into my machine to quilt the layers together, first one way and then the other. I don’t measure or rule but generally follow the vertical lines in the quilt and then fill in any areas that look too gappy. So some lines are much closer together than others and I’m fine with that. The wavy lines mean discrepancies look kind of intentional – I think! To my surprise I find the actual quilting quite easy doing it this way. The finished quilt is 44” x 66”. I glue baste the layers together on my cutting table using the wonderful tutorial from @ericaarndt on YouTube. The pattern is based on a tutorial from the @missouriquiltco For the quilting I followed the directions from Christa Watson @christaquilts. This involves starting at one edge, quilting to the middle; flipping the quilt and continuing from the middle to the other edge. This works really well for me. For the binding, I cut my strips 2 1/4” on the bias and sewed them together. I just think the bias is a little easier to work with. I sewed the strips to the front, flipped them over, glue basted them on the wrong side and stitched in the ditch from the front. You can see that this way catches all of the edges, but sometimes there is a little surplus on the back. I am still experimenting and if doing a really special quilt I would probably hand sew it down on the back. When I bought my sewing machine about four years ago, I did think I might want to quilt some time so I bought machine with wide throat plate, the Pfaff 710 and that’s really helpful. This trackie set is from the @Modern_Sewing_Co and I really love it. Is it time to crack out the sweatshirting?? We're definitely inching that way. This is a cute fabric without being cutesy. It's a brushed back sweatshirting so has a lovely fluffy reverse of the fabric to keep you cozy against the skin. This would work for all sort of jumper and cardigan patterns - I'm tempted to make a longer length #marlosweater by @truebias. But a bit of me REALLY fancies making some lounge trousers for hibernating in - the #msSundayTrackies by @modern_sewing_co look like a really lovely shape and oh-so-comfy. It's been almost one year since I launched the #MSsundaytrackies pattern and I wanted to revisit it by turning it on it's head. I originally designed this pattern to be made with cosy jersey but I envisioned a slinky evening pair with some 'cargo pant' details. This make ended up being a real mixed bag and I'll be sharing it all in tomorrows 'long read' newsletter. As always, head to the link in the bio if you'd like to subscribe! ☕

I’m on a roll of making things I actually like and think I will wear a lot! Sometimes it’s the other way around. This set is from a company that is new to me the @Modern_Sewing_Co and I really love it. It’s the #MSSundayTrackies and #MSRibSweater I had seen ads on Insta for ‘Airport clothing’ and this is what got me started on all these knit items. This is a cotton mix jersey from deep in my stash. And the stripe is rib fabric, which as the pattern name implies is essential for this #RibTop. I got this rib ages ago from @maeve_sews closing down sale! This top is a little different to the normal sweatshirt or long-sleeve T in that the sleeves are shaped and voluminous and the top is generous around the waistline. Even using rib fabric I needed to stretch it to its limit to make it fit. I love the result. I was between two sizes for the top and I sized up; and for the #SundayTrackies I sized up from the hip down. I wanted this set to be loose and generous. I’ve included a pic here of the cream ones I made with the top tucked in to show the lovely fit around the tum. Very satisfying even if I will probably always wear a top outside. The instructions are extensive and extremely clear and well explained. There is plenty of information for someone new to sewing knits that would be very helpful. However, a beginner might find adding the rib to the top tricky. On the AOs of these patterns I got printed, the size lines are included on the actual pattern pieces but not the size numbers. I found this confusing. There are plenty of size guides printed on the spare paper, but I tend to throw the spare paper out. I had to go rummaging in the bin to see what size I had used. It would be great if these patterns went up another couple of sizes. The Sunday Trackies go up to size 28: W45.2, H54.7. The Rib Sweater goes up to size 28: Chest 51.6; W45.2; H54.7 #Styledseated #shownwhileseated #sewingtnt #IrelandSews #SewIreland #ThanksIMadeIt #handmadewardrobe #so50tops #so50pants #isewmyownclothes #curvysewingcollective #Sewover50 #sewover60 #fatsewover50 #keepcalmandsewon #keepcalmandsew #sanitysewing #sewconnected #Fatsewingclub #CSCMakes #sewistsofinstagram #Imakemyownclothes

I’ve made a capsule! It’s the @Helens__Closet #JacksonPullover (with hood and pocket from free extension pack); the #WhitlamSkirt from @MunaAndBroad; and the #SundayTrackies from the @Modern_Sewing_Company. The fabric is a gorgeous quality French Terry gifted to me by Minerva as one of their ambassadors. The blue-green cuffing is from my stash. The only I haven’t written about before here is this particular skirt. So here are the details on that. I’ve already made the Whitlam Skirt three times! I really love the fit of it, but I had a bit of an adventure with this one. This French Terry is not as stretchy as the other skirts I made so I added 3/4” to each side of the front piece. I then also added this to the centre back seam. Mistake! This seam is beautifully shaped in the pattern to fit the bum and I shouldn’t have messed with it – I should have added the extra to the side seams. The result was a wavy bubble bum - not a good look. I had topstitched the centre back seam on my Coverstitch too. It wasn’t too bad in the end. I basically undid affected part of the seam, basted it back to the original pattern shape, tried it on and it worked. Then I re-serged and re-topstitched it. I was really relieved. I did the last inch or two near the waist on my sewing machine using a zigzag as I didn’t want to risk cutting a hole in anything with the serger blade. The only other change I made was to to do two rows of topstitching on the waistband from the front. On the others I did one as the pattern shows, but it’s knit elastic and I find I have to fiddle about with it on the inside. The extra row keeps it nicely in place. The Trackies go up to size 28: W45.2, H54.7. The Whitlam Skirt goes up to size M: W60, H71.5 The Jackson Pullover goes up to size 34: Chest 60, W52, H62 #MinervaMakes #MinervaMakers #MinervaBrandAmbassador #so50visible #curvysewing #fatsewing #plussizesewing #IrelandSews #handmadewardrobe #so50tops #so50pants #isewmyownclothes #curvysewingcollective #Sewover50 #sewover60 #fatsewover50 #Fatsewingclub #CSCMakes #sewistsofinstagram #MsSundayTrackies

These are the #SundayTrackies from a company that is new to me, the @modern_sewing_co and I just love them. I was gifted this beautiful French Terry from Minerva as an ambassador. It is really easy to sew with, and has a beautiful texture but it is only moderately stretchy so wouldn’t suit all projects that need stretch jersey. The fit on these is amazing straight from the pack. I just graded from 22 at waist to 24 from the hips out and I really love the fit. They are designed for 5’8” and I’m 5’ 51/2” so I took 2” off the length just before adding the cuff. I wouldn’t do this the next time as I’d like to turn up the cuff even more. Although this length would work well without socks in the summer. However, while the size range goes up to 28, this 28 is just waist 45.2” and hip 54.7”, which is a pity. It would be great if they went up another few sizes. I did my own thing on the construction of these until it got to the cuffs and here I followed the instructions exactly – they are made using a standard straight stitch. I’m not sure why, but it works! I also topstitched the seam allowance on both sides after joining the two cuff pieces together. This made it easier to get a nice crisp edge. I sewed the two backs together at the centre back and the two fronts likewise. Then I topstitched the seam on my cover stitch. I think this flat faux fell finish is more comfortable to wear. Likewise I did this on the inner legs. For the waistband, because this French Terry is only moderately stretchy, I cut it 1.5” longer than the pattern piece. The waistband pattern piece is smaller than the hips and I wasn’t sure this would work in this fabric. I’m also wearing #FreeRangeSlacks from @SewHouse7; the #JacksonPullover from @Helens__Closet; and the red top is the #TarleeTee from @MunaAndBroad. The navy is the #LBPullover from @PaperTheory #MinervaMakes #MinervaMakers #MinervaBrandAmbassador #so50visible #curvysewing #Styledseated #shownwhileseated #fatsewing #plussizesewing #IrelandSews #handmadewardrobe #so50tops #so50pants #isewmyownclothes #curvysewingcollective #Sewover50 #sewover60 #fatsewover50 #Fatsewingclub #CSCMakes #sewistsofinstagram #MsSundayTrackies
