The attention to detail in the Modern Sewing Company patterns is what makes them a joy to sew as well as ensuring a lovely finished garment. The French Smock is becoming a favourite of mine - this is my second version and I'm already thinking a light-weight floaty one (in a print?!) might be nice for the summer. This is the longer length. I've omitted the cuffs and just hemmed and lined/faced the bottom of the sleeves. Lovely details of the French Smock #msfrenchsmock pattern. This is a great piece for showing your creative flare with lots of options for the front fastening included in the pattern instructions. Recommended for intermediate makers - if you'd like to build up to this piece I recommend starting with the Art of Shirt Making workshop 🍄

Hair? Makeup? You must be kidding. I’ve been too busy sewing this baby. What a lovely make too. Gorgeous shirting fabric so enjoyable to work with. Stripes for a little added confusion. Couldn’t figure out why the back was so long till I realised it was creeping over the shoulders to the front. Sleeves have a couple of tucks in my version for some reason… But I’m so pleased with it. This is the French Smock from the @modern_sewing_co made in linen from @likesewamazing in Bristol. There are lots of nice finishing details to get your teeth into with this pattern: 'run and fell' seams (like you get on the inside leg of your jeans), different front closure options, nice cuffs with tower plackets. Here in London the weather is slowly getting warmer 🥹🙏 It's such a nice time of year to sew cotton shirts as you know you'll get a good 6+ months wear of them before it gets cold again. A recent favourite of mine is the #msfrenchsmock which comes with a big section in the instructions to talk through design options for the front bib. If you're looking to sew a useful and practical shirt AND get your creative head on then this might be one for you. . These photos show the step by step process of the front placket. It's a fun piece to sew and there's no need to be intimidated by the front placket, it's just a big piece of fabric origami 🤗

This is the second version I have made of the French Smock pattern from the Modern Sewing Company. You can see the stripey linen one in earlier posts - I made full use of playing with the direction stripes in that one! This version is slightly simpler: I left off the cuffs and just hemmed and faced the sleeves for a more basic workwear look. The khadi denim from the Cloth House has a lovely worn in look and feel. My second #msfrenchsmock this time with the zip. Was just a short remnant from @bambersewing so had to be frugal in cutting. Helped in not having to do the sleeve plackets again. I do like it. Used the fraying selvedge as a feature frill. #sewistofinstagram #dressmaking @modern_sewing_co Added an elasticated bottom to avoid tucking in bulk. Had to sew the back together from odd pieces but got away with it.

My hacked #msfrenchsmock by @modern_sewing_co in cotton poplin 😌 I tried to loosely recreate a Rachel Comey top that I saw on IG. I cut a size 8 (1-2 size larger than my measurements) everywhere else except for the bib - which I chose to cut the largest size. Then I shortened the front button placket a bit to fit into the bib, added a collar stand, pipings on the bib and the cuffs, and modified the hem. This was my first time trying the henley style placket and the pipings. It actually went pretty smoothly! The instructions were really clear as always with Hetty’s other patterns. A hacked version of the #msfrenchsmock, made in classic ticking fabric from @merchantandmills. The buttons are from a pot of mismatched beads and buttons my granny gave me—I’m pretty sure they once belonged to one of my grandad’s old shirts. For this version, I removed the front placket and added buttons down the front. After making the original pattern a few times, I wanted to try something different, and I’m so pleased with how it turned out! #msfrenchsmock #sewing

Ghost set 👻 The @modern_sewing_co #msfrenchsmock has been on my to-sew list for a year, and I decided to make a wearable toile as a companion for my bow pocket pants. I’m so so happy with how this turned out, including my very first plackets and sleeve cuffs! I made a size 8 with no mods, which was one size smaller than the chart would have suggested based on my hip measurement. Next time, I’m going to make one size down and shorten the sleeves by an additional 1.5”. The French Smock in a sturdy cotton makes me feel like I could maybe be a really gifted painter. I’m dressing for the job I want 😄 I made this about 6 months ago and then put it aside while I searched for the right sized red buttons whenever I went op shopping. Finally found some last week so here we are! I wanted smaller buttons on the cuffs, so did a mix n match with the cute heart shape & a loner from my jar of random buttons. Apart from some headaches and confusion sewing the plackets (both front and sleeve) it was an easy sew. Pretty sure the pattern and instructions have since been updated, so I’m pretty keen to have another crack, and hoping it’s a much calmer experience! Anyway, love how this turned out and the loose fit/roomy sleeves/slip over the head/no fuss style of it is so good.
