In autumn I love nothing more than a really heavy pair of Spring Trousers #MSspringtrousers - these are made from 12oz twill from @merchantandmills and I love them. I scooped out a tiny bit of volume from the back crotch - from 0cm at the waist to 1.5cm down the back seam and back to 0cm at the inside leg seam. This helped to remove a bit of bulk from the back which has less flexibility when made in a heavier fabric. This cut works really well with the new Boat Neck pattern #MSboatnecktop as it balances the volume nicely. . I'm thinking of adding some outfit pairings to the website to offer 2 or 3 patterns that work well together at a slightly cheaper price... thoughts?

I made the Zehra gilet from a deep burgundy knitted fabric that I found as a remnant in the bargain bin at @javrostoffen . The floral fabric was another hidden gem I discovered there. Continuing my quest to use fabric I already own, especially if it involves an upcycle of something I don’t wear. This vintage style rose wool used to be a dress I haven’t worn for years - thank you to @MaritaVan for the original gift (do you remember this??) 😘 I’m also trying to sew patterns that have sat neglected in the collection a long time. This is the @TrueBias #MarloSweater in a size 8. I used a black wool boucle for the back and bands as I needed to supplement the other fabric. Buttons from the jar. Also wearing a #BoatNeckTop @Modern_Sewing_Co. Made up in @WeAreTheFabricStore merino. Made a size 12 and love the neckline. The skirt is an earlier make. Pleased with my latest #MSboatnecktop by @modern_sewing_co . It's my second one and fits really well, I'll get a lot of wear out of it. I've used Fuchsia Organic Interlock Jersey from @newcrafthouse which was really nice to sew with and is lovely and soft.

And my very last make of 2023, in progress for a week and finished today. This is the Boatneck Top by @modern_sewing_co and it’s officially my ideal boatneck pattern! The neck facing gives it a beautiful finish and it’s just the right width - statement wide but with no straps on show. It was my first time using this company’s patterns, and I’ll definitely use them again. Lovely drafting and good instructions. Hetty the designer says the top should fit like a second skin but I didn’t love that on me, so I ditched my first version (size 18 based on my measurements) and made this one in a 22. I figured I could take it in if needed. Next time I’ll compromise and make the 22 but with slightly bigger seam allowances! I also lengthened this version by 2 inches which feels about right for me. An ode to @TessutiFabrics and winter dressing. 🥶🤧 For a few days every winter this five-year-old #TessutiEva makes a welcome appearance. Made from thick wool it’s like wearing a blanket. Topped with a #TessutiAmara with a reduced width so the neckline sits more snug, a gifted handmade felted brooch and underneath my merino #MSBoatNeckTop of which I have several. And before I ran out the door, threw on another old make, one of my first projects, a #TessutiFlorence in Tessuti boiled wool. I’m having a documentation moment. Here are notes on a whole bunch of little makes that get alot of wear right now: 1. Poplin skirt based on Tessuti’s wonderfully adaptable #tessutimultielasticwaistskirt. I often wrestle with full skirt proportions, but I got to a good place here. The panelled skirt rectangles have about 10cm less width than recommended, I omitted a third elastic channel and added a drawstring. Excellent navy poplin from @joans.finefabric 2. Modern Sewing’s #msboatnecktop which I also wrangled to fit. Neck/shoulders size 6 and body size 10. This is a great pattern that I’m making more of with little tweaks here and there. Still figuring out how knits work…from memory, this is an organic cotton knit from @missmaudenz with 5% elastane. 3. And scarfs! Incredibly boring to knit, but so good to throw on. Brown one is #sophiescarf in Wild Earth Natural DK. The pebbly one is my go-to scarf recipe in @darkharbouryarn ‘s amazing worsted merino/linen in Kelpie. I measure knitting in hours of tv watched - this took all of Pachinko season one 🍂🌊🌾

Oh heyyyyy. It's been a while, but I'm happy to report that despite the fact that I haven't posted in a while, I've been (slowly) sewing. I recent finished these two wardrobe basics - wide legged #mndawnjeans and The Modern Sewing Co. #msboatnecktop. This is my third pair of dawn jeans, and I made these up in straight 14. Fun facts: I sewed the jeans zipper facing the wrong direction and I would have had to unpick too much so now I just have to reach inside my pants to pull it up 😂. I also wore these for three weeks before I installed the button - I just used a safety pin, HA! I will likely unpick the hem and make them an inch longer. This is the first time I have sewed a @modern_sewing_co and I really loved it. I made a size too big, but I've been wearing this non stop. I also finished this quickly to bring on a trip, and so didn't top stitch the facing and haven't hemmed the body or the sleeves, and I may not! The next time I make this I'll lengthen the body by 2-3" because I like to tuck my shirts in and this is almost too short for that. It would also be very cute shortened by an inch or so for a more cropped look. Here's a question for those of you who have sergers - do you use jersey needles when you are overlocking knits? I may just need to change my needles, but my serger made tiny holes in some of the seams. Okeee, happy baby Friday! 😘

I've sewed a lot over the past few months but haven't posted. This black shirt is one of five #msboatnecktop by @modern_sewing_co that I've made for myself and my daughter. Two of them I hacked with a turtleneck. For this one I lengthened both the body and sleeves. The fabric is a cozy hemp/cotton blend from #saltlakesewciety. The wool felt necklace is made by @lynseywalters and I love it! The skirt is an old make, V1247 in orange denim. Socks knitted in Socks that Rock lightweight from #bluemoonfiberarts.

NEW PATTERN launch on Friday 💥 This is an old design from @henri_london (my previous business) when I sold finished garments instead of pdf patterns. I designed this piece in the first lockdown to fix the problem of feeling a bit gross when slouching around the house 24/7. I wanted to make a jersey top that 'lifts' you a little bit and looks more intentional and stylish. It's a piece I've worn consistently since that first lockdown - a quiet and unassuming staple. We were on vacation last week so I missed the first couple of days from MeMadeMay. Before I made this Boatneck top (and the three other ones). I wore them a lot on vacation, they go well on their own, but they are also great for layering. The Boatneck is just right, not to big and because of the neckband, it's not really a band, but a separate pattern piece, the opening looks bigger, if you know what I mean 😊 The Boatneck top is a pattern from The Modern Sewer.
