Zero Waste Pouffe
The Modern Sewing Co

Zero Waste Pouffe
The Zero Waste Pouffe is designed to store fabric waste while being decorative for your home. You can use it as a 'bin' while saving fabric scraps, and when full, simply zip it up. The pouffe features piping and a zip that allows you to top it up over time as the fabric compresses through use.

I've had a little flurry of home projects this year and the latest is this #mszerowastepouffe by @modern_sewing_co I couldn't believe how fast this came together and then I was incredibly shocked by the sheer volume of scrap fabric I got in here! Ever the hoarder, my scraps pile was getting out of control so this was the perfect project to contain it! Swipe to see the two baskets I emptied into it and I even was able to empty my thread jar and it still isn't totally full! Such a great project and I was totally inspired by @bethanylynne_makes with her choice of fabric. This @merchantandmills canvas has been on my list for ages so it was nice to get a chance to use it. #especiallymadebyflorence #homesewing #zerowaste #sewing

April 2025: Just finished this pouffe and it’s already been approved by the cats. The cool thing about this is that it’s filled with all of my scrap fabric! It’s a bit saggy at the moment, but that’s good because it means there’s still room for more scraps (which there will always be). This was my first time doing piping. I was nervous because I thought it would be way harder to do. It was super straightforward and I love how it looks! The pattern instructions were very easy to follow and I’m really happy with how this came together! My Make Nine for 2025 is full of projects I plan to complete & practical items or garments that will fill the odd gap in my wardrobe. As well as a couple of gifts. I’ll continue mending items as required, I haven’t added it to the list as it’s definitely second nature now 😄 1. Green corduroy skirt (based on #Kewskirt by @NinaLeeLondon with additional pocket (already have the fabric). 🪡 2. Finish my #SeaglassSweater by @Wool.and.pine.designs. I started it at the end of 2023, made progress in 2024 and I hope finish it in 2025 🤞 🧶 3. Finish the striped Jumper I’m knitting @Sisson.Richard (75% complete) & my yellow #CottageCardigan by @JaqCieslak (about 50% there). 2 for 1 here 😜 🧶 4. A top to match and wear with my #WinslowCulottes I made last year. Possibly a #ScoutTee by @GrainlineStudio. 🪡 5. A project for my Sister (cashing in her Christmas voucher). She’s chosen #BrooklynRaglan by @ToriKnitsNYC in a mossy green. 🧶 6. #MusselburghHat by @Ysolda using stash yarn. I’m yet to find a hat I’m 💯 happy with on my little head. Ive loved all the different versions I’ve seen. I’m looking forward to playing with colours too. 🧶 7. Shirt (a roll over from last year). A #JoanieShirt by @SewLiberated I already have some lovely olive fabric for it. 8. Scrap busting project. I’ve had my eye on the Zero Waste Pouffe by @modern_sewing_co as a great use of fabric as well as storing scraps. #mszerowastepouffe 9. Summer skirt (another roll over project), I’ve wanted to make a #EstuarySkirt by @SewLiberated for a while. I’m hoping to use some lightweight denim stash fabric too. I’m already quite excited by my making plans, I don’t intended to put any unnecessary pressure on myself trying to complete everything this year. However I do enjoy having a bit of a guide and focus. Particularly since these are items I have considered and know should fit in with other garments nicely. #MakeNine25 #SewingGoals #KnittingPlans #HandmadeWardrobe #ConsideredWardrobe

This is the @modern_sewing_co #mszerowastepouffe pattern, made using Enigma linen from the lovely @croftmillfabric. It's a great way to use up fabric offcuts as the pouffe is stuffed with them and more can be added over time if it flattens out. It was such an enjoyable project as I was inspired by the beautiful sunsets in Margate which is why I chose these colours (so happy the Enigma linen comes in so many colours!). Instead of making the side pieces in one colour I made up new pattern pieces for three assymetric shapes.

POV: you’re the only bright piece of decor in the whole house. I made the @modern_sewing_co #mszerowastepouffe after hoarding fabric scraps for a long time, and I’m so glad that I did. This piece actually goes in my son’s room, but for lighting purposes, you’re getting it in my bedroom here (nearly 6 year old child for scale if you swipe). The red fabric that I used for the pouffe is a bottom weight from my stash and the red has been printed (painted?) on and I chose to show off the painted selvedge for the top piping, which you can see in the third photo. I think it adds to the kid’s-room/appropriate vibe of the whole thing. I did use batting to help give some structure to the sides and smooth them out, which helped a lot. A PSA for this is that the pouffe is HEAVY, which makes sense—it’s shoved full of fabric, not squishy poly fill. I included the handle which helps make it manageable for a kid to move around their room, so I’d highly suggest including the optional handle piece. #clairemadeit #memadeeveryday

Made the #mszerowastepouffe to store all my off-cuts of fabric. It needs filling a bit more (sure that won’t take long!!) love the navy jungle print furnishing velvet from @carolynroseschoolofsewing thank you Carolyn for your piping advice as it was my first attempt at it!! Really pleased with the pink piping and zip, inspired by my sewing class buddies! I didn’t have a piping foot at home, so the zipper foot was a good alternative. In fact, I found that it worked better as I could get closer to the piping. #zerowaste #fabricstorage #sewingjoy #sewingproject #sewingclass #imadethis #memade

Who's been saving their fabric scraps for the Zero Waste Pouffe...? Looking lovely in two colour ways here! #mszerowastepouffe

Clearly, Nina is looking at a treat here :) lil' birthday present for my mom. #mszerowastepouffe in a cotton canvas I picked up from @bigduckcanvas, stuffed with copious amounts of scrap fabric and other fabric castoffs. I didn't have a good string for piping, so I used several strands of a smaller one that I had already and was not going to use for any other projects (it was from my mom's stash, so maybe she'll appreciate it coming back to her ;) #mszerowastepouffe @modern_sewing_co

👋 Football’s over TG! I wanted to show you my patchwork footstool “Zero Waste Pouffe” that’s filled with fabric scraps. The top and bottom were made from fabric samples, and the side panel is Liberty velvet from an outlet. It’s even filled with fabric and old tights! And it matches my slippers perfectly. 🥿✨ 🪡 Pattern Review - This was my first time attempting home furnishing, and it went pretty well! Although piping isn’t my favourite pastime, I loved the zero waste ethos of this project. Instead of basting the sides, I found it quicker and easier to use curved safety pins, a trick quilters use to attach all the layers of fabric and wadding together. 🌿🧵 #zerowaste #diyhomedecor #patchwork #libertyoflondonfabric #upcycling #homefurnishings #sustainableliving #mszerowastepouffe #homemadehomefurnishings

My version of the #mszerowastepouffe is in a couple different green canvases (the chartreuse is a beautiful Japanese canvas from @stonemountainfabric and the circles are a remnant from @blackbirdfabrics) and a bit of natural denim piping from @wearethefabricstore. A fun and quick project primarily because of the genius zipper situation (love @wawaksewing for my zipper and thread needs) which hides fabric scraps and doubles as stuffing. I somehow didn’t have enough to truly fill out the pouffe yet?! Give me a few weeks 🤓 #notsponsored #sewcialists #sewistsofwesternmass #sewistsofpioneervalleyma #singer401a

Here is Pumpkin the cat enjoying the @modern_sewing_co #mszerowastepouffe . Made for my son and his girlfriend, Pumpkin is enjoying the pouffe too!

Fabric sourcing is a large factor in ethical fashion. But it’s the supply chain after the fabric gets to its maker that is the biggest differentiation between factory fast fashion and home sewing. Here are a couple ways to keep sustainable sewing practices front of mind: - curb overconsumption habits - invest in your skills so that you make high quality garments that last - don’t throw away offcuts and use them for your projects such as the #msZeroWastePouffe Share your sustainable sewing suggestions below, we’d love to hear them! #sustainablesewing #ethicalfashion

As soon as I saw the @modern_sewing_co #mszerowastepouffe I knew I needed to make (at least) one! I’ve accumulated soooo many scraps this last year sewing and felt foolish moving with garbage bags of them. I finished the pouffe just in time for my move and it’s incredible how much scraps fit in! I cut 2 for a matching set (inverted though so the second will be green with gold piping) thinking I’d definitely have enough for both, but the 2nd one will only be 1/10th full. The fabric is a beautiful upholstery I was kindly gifted by @sewariasew when I complimented a shirt she made in it—I love this community! #memade #sewing #sustainable #nowaist #DIY

I’m a bit of a scrap fabric hoarder so I finally did something with *almost* all of it and made the #mszerowastepouffe by @modern_sewing_co 😁 There’s about 2+ years worth of scraps stuffed in there and it’s heavy! I’ve already had requests from my husband and kids who want their own so I better start collecting scraps again haha. I used a gorgeous @merchantandmills ditsy floral canvas from @ewefibers and I love it so much. It’s a 14oz canvas so it’s very sturdy and perfect for this project. A little tip, if you use a metal zipper, wear gloves or something to stuff the fabric in. 😅 . . . #memade #sewing #sewistsofinstagram #sewist #scrapfabric #zerowastepouffe #modernsewingco #merchantandmills #ewefinefibergoods

Zero waste pouffe from @modern_sewing_co ☁️ My fabric scrap bag was overflowing, so I finally sewed one of these. This quick-to-make pattern is designed to be filled with all your offcuts, saving them from the dumpster. I stuffed some old toiles and end-of-life RTW in there as well 😝 I used a fun Marcus Bros cotton twill that I picked up a while ago from the local sale section. There's enough left for a second, coordinating one--can't wait to build up some more scraps so I can make it! Planning to add a few inches in height next time to reach ideal couch-lounging altitudes. #mszerowastepouffe #scrapbusting #sustainablesewing #diyhomedecor #handmadehome #sewingproject #sewinglife

Latest project, the Zero Waste Pouffe by The Modern Sewing Co @modern_sewing_co. Good way to dispose of scraps, I bet I’m not the only one who has boxes of scraps that ‘will come in handy’ one day😂 well now is that one day. I also used clothes that I had put aside to go to the dump or charity shop. #MSzerowastepouffe #modernsewingco #sewing #sewing #sewingproject #sewersofinstagram #homemadeisbest #zerowaste #zerowasteliving
