Wedding outfit ideas 💛 I love wearing silk and I also love seeing how different fabrics can transform how a pattern looks and feels. The pieces listed below work as beautifully in silk as they do linen and cottons so they're great choices for weddings or special occasions. 1 - Cara Top & Spring Trousers - silk waffle weave 2 - Spring Top & cami (simple self draft) - silk satin 3 - Sienna Dress - silk taffeta 4 - Jesse Jumpsuit with a tie belt - silk satin 5 - Darcy Trench Coat to throw over all of the above - gabardine . #MScaratop #msjessejumpsuit #MSspringtrousers #MSdarcycoat #mssiennadress

The Sienna Dress 🌷 This is the #SiennaDress by @modern_sewing_co – whilst my love of dresses will probably never go away 😂🙈 I’ve found myself wanting to experiment with new design features and silhouettes more this year, and the Sienna Dress felt like the perfect way to do that. I love the pretty design details in this pattern – the dress is made up of five panels, each with a series of meticulous pleats across the bodice that create a more fitted silhouette at the bust, and a lovely dropped waist detail where they end. There’s plenty of swish in that skirt – I used 3m of fabric and just had scraps leftover! 💃🏽 I was impressed by the instructions – they’re super detailed, with great illustrations, and even include a separate bodice facing pattern piece to help you toile to get the perfect fit. I really struggle to visualize 3D objects in my head (funny how sewing became my main hobby lol), so pleats have always been a bit of a challenge – but the instructions made them feel very doable. Stating the obvious, but there are a lot of pleats in this dress haha!! If you’re not a fan of pressing and precise sewing, you’ll definitely learn to love it by the end 😂🙈. In all seriousness, I found the pleating process really meditative once I got the hang of them. Sizing-wise: I used my upper bust measurement to choose my size, and this worked perfectly. Each size has a different seam allowance for sewing down the pleats — I almost missed that part of the instructions, so if you make this pattern just be sure to check the seam allowance box for your seam allowance here! I also found it easiest to press each pleat in its final direction as I sewed, rather than waiting until the end. Fabric is a gorgeous pastel cotton lawn from @fabricgodmother . It’s very fine and floaty, and I love how it holds the structure of the pleats but doesn’t feel stiff in how it drapes! 💙💕 . . . . #ModernSewingCo #msSienna #MSSiennaDress #fabricgodmother #fabricgodmotherprints #sewistsofinstagram #memade #imakemyclothes #isewmyownclothes #memadewardrobe #sewcialists #millenialsewing #ilovetosew #sewinginspiration

Last sewing project for 2024… I’ve had this block print cotton for ages and was really stuck on what it should become. After much indecision I settled on the @modern_sewing_co #mssienna I’ve never sewn pintucks like this before and I love the way the pleated create the drop-waist gathers. The skirt falls really nicely and works well with the drape of the cotton. I’m not entirely sure about how I feel about the bodice and strap situation - we shall see… I sewed a size 10 and shortened the bodice by 2 inches. I kept the length long. #memadewardrobe #mssiennadress

Out here trying to sew a whole new wardrobe for our honeymoon in less than a week 👀 This is the Sienna Dress by @modern_sewing_co which I’ve been admiring for a while now. It was my first time making pleats and it was super straight forward. All I have left are attaching the straps and hemming but I’m tempted to switch over to my next make 😂🤦🏻♀️ . . . . . #mssiennadress #blackbirdfabrics #bfviscoselinen #pleats #sewing #sewistsofinstagram #sewingproject #wip #workinprogress #memade #memadevacation #saturdaysewing #weekendsewing #vacationmode #create #blackdress #newhobby #laurenfindsahobby

Verdant summer greenery and the @modern_sewing_co Sienna Dress. This is my first Modern Sewing Co garment, and I was won over by the unique design the day it launched. I really love the simplicity of the shape but the drama of having several dozen pleats all in one. I chose a bit of an unconventional fabric for this dress as my hope was that all of the pleats would create a bit of a moire pattern with the stripes, and I think that ended up being a success! If you followed along on stories as I made this you’ll undoubtedly know that I ran into issues with sizing. Based off the finished garment measurements of the upper bust I cut a size UK 12, and when I got to the fit testing period of this garment (which ended up being the 2nd to last step in the instructions), I realized that we were in trouble. Based on other reviews the common consensus is that the dress does run on the large size, and I do that there is a good amount of room for error due to the nature of sewing this mani pleats on a garment. I could have stood to cut out 2 sizes down and I think this dress would have ended up fitting as intended. I was able to trouble shoot and add 2 additional pleats in the center back as well as take out volume from the 2 seams that join the back panels to the side panels, which did improve things, however I’ll say that the garment still feels looser in the upper bust than I would have liked. Will I wear this dress in the muggy summer heat and feel comfortable and cute? Yes to both. I would actually love to make another version 2 sizes down in a slinky black fabric and end the hem above the knee for a heat-conscious summer date dress. So, while I did have fit issues, I will still get use out of this garment and I would like to make another, so that’s does speak volumes for how much I like the design. Pattern: @modern_sewing_co #MSsiennadress Fabric: @blackbirdfabrics shirting Size made: a UK 12, but sizes down to a UK 10-ish #memadeeveryday #handmadewardrobe

This is the dress I wanted to make and wear for my birthday over the weekend and I’m obsessed with it! It feels elegant but casual enough for everyday 💚 I really appreciated the thorough fitting instructions for this pattern and made a toile of the bust facings as recommended to find the size I wanted to make. I was in between sizes on the chart so I sized down to an 8 (bust measurement 33”) and the fit is great. I actually took it in 1/4” on the front “side” seams because I didn’t want it too loose at the top. And in this linen I wanted to account for stretching out while wearing. I made the shortest length for my height of 5’3” and love wear the length hits. The pleats were surprisingly fun to sew! I got totally lost on the French seam pockets and couldn’t figure out where I went wrong…so I decided I didn’t want them anyway and picked them out. I like that the straps are put in at the end so it’s easy to get them just where you want them. I SO enjoyed sewing this beautiful dress and had a hard time putting it down. Will 100% make again! . . . sewing notes for #mssiennadress by @modern_sewing_co : i'd expected to need to size down based on feedback from those who went before me but found this dress fit like a glove based on the upper bust measurements provided in the instructions. i am 5'6" and sewed the middle length. some changes: i used spaghetti straps and raised the neckline a la hrlmakes- that was much easier than i'd anticipated but next time i will also raise the side panel (as i believe she did), as this one displayed my armpit flub a bit more prominently than i prefer. i added sleeves using the sleeve pattern from the elvira dress by tiana's closet (found on etsy). i was committed to this idea but it was sort of a stretch so i pleated the sleeves instead of gathering in an effort to keep things cohesive. i added elastic all the way around the top and bottom of the sleeve and attached the bottom of the sleeve right to the outside side panel of the dress. felipe inelegantly observed that the sleeves and bodice reminded him of a puddle jumper ("swimmies"). he is not wrong but i love the dress and him anyway. i extended the bodice facing and added elastic to the bottom to create a shelf bra to avoid wearing a strapless bra. the shelf bra worked perfectly with thin silicone inserts and it made for a really low key and comfortable dressing experience. some thoughts: once i decided to measure out and mark the pleats with a ruler and pencil, this dress sewed up really easily. it's the most fun i've had both sewing and wearing a dress in a long time. it is worthy of the finest silk you can get your hands on- but this fake taffeta was 2.50 from the upholstery section at jomar (iykyk).

Hacked Sienna Dress details for the grid! The pattern is the #mssiennadress by @modern_sewing_co which I made in a size 8 and in length 2. I love the pintuck details and the drop waist silhouette of the design, but I knew I wanted to edit the neckline a bit. The only real change I made to the pattern was raising the front neckline by a few inches. I based the shape off of the Romy top, and altered the bust facing pieces to match. I also made the straps skinnier. I sewed this in a lightweight silk dupioni from @stonemountainfabric which is difficult to capture on camera. It has a beautiful drape that adds just the right amount of poof to the dress. I’ve never worked with silk before, so figuring out how to get neatly pressed pin tucks without scorching the pricey fabric was a bit stressful. It all worked out okay, with only a few water stains from my leaky iron. I wore this to a wedding in LA (congrats Kaley and Joe💗) with thrifted heels, two brand new tattoos, and a gingham bow I made based on a tutorial I found online. I’m so happy with the way it turned out, but I’m also looking forward to not sewing on a deadline!

Remember my funny dog fabric from Japan? I bought it thinking it was a funky triangle shape and it turned out to be dogs…haha. Anyhow I decided to make the #mssiennadress and didn’t really think too much about how the tucks would affect the dog print. I figured it was abstract enough it didn’t matter if the dogs were messed up. But to my surprise/shock, the dogs ended up nearly perfect. Like it was meant to be. Wild. It was a bit daunting to have to do so many tucks. I am not as precise as I’d like to be. I did shorten the dress and made some other mods to make it fit better. I did a little shaping under the arms as the straight underarm wasn’t working for me. Also the facing was smaller than the outside and I had to do two extra tucks in the front. I don’t know for sure if that was my error and I just missed the tucks, but it seemed to work out ok. I would omit the pockets on future versions as it kind of drags on mine, probably because the fabric is so light. @modern_sewing_co

🥂 cheers to the launch of another beautiful pattern by the @modern_sewing_co - the Sienna Dress ✨ I had the pleasure of testing this pattern and am so pleased to include the finished garment in my summer wardrobe. This first version was sewn with a viscose/linen blend (85/15%) and it has lovely drape and movement from all of the pin tucks. It would be fun to make this in a crispier fabric as well, to show off the volume a bit more. I made a straight UK size 10, and the fit is lovely. #mssiennadress #sewing #memade #memadewardrobe #slowfashion

Here are some stills for #MsSiennaDress by @modern_sewing_co. Sizing and mods were mentioned in the previous post. I made some additional notes about the pattern and instructions. What can I say, the dress is beautiful inside and out! It is all french seamed including the pockets. It feels like a piece of art with the unique elements of the dress and thoughtful details. I found the instructions straightforward. You may need to do some googling if you don’t have experience attaching invisible zippers. What i did struggle with a bit is making the pleats simply because i thought the seam allowance was 3/8. However that ended up in the pattern piece being too small. Once I measured the seam allowance, i realized the seam allowance for the pleats was just under 3/8 inch and once i re did it the end result was perfect. I am not sure if i missed that part of the instructions. Once i figured it out, sewing the pleats was easy and so satisfying! I loved that it has instructions on toiling the facing before printing the whole pattern and i highly recommend doing that. Like others, I sized down. I would also recommend checking the placement of the pockets. Mine ended up being a bit comically low. The dress has several length options for three height ranges. I chose the longest version and I loved that for once i did not have to add any length to a pattern. I will also note that I ended up using 3 meters of fabric but it was a bit of a tight squeeze and i did not have any leftover fabric. #LinenDress #SewistofInstagram #ModernSewingPatterns #SummerFashion2024 #IndieSewing #IndiePatterns

Det har akkurat passe med volum og fall 👌🏼 / Black linen + 44 pintucks = The Sienna dress and my new favourite summer dress. And yes, it has pockets. Pattern: Sienna dress by @modern_sewing_co. After sewing the bust facing to check the sizing, I chose a size smaller than usual, and could probably have gone down another size because it became a bit looser with wear. But I don’t really have a lot to fill the bust area with, so if you actually have boobs you might not need to do this 🤷🏼♀️ I’m 1.68 and sewed the longest length option. As usual with @modern_sewing_co, the pattern has a bunch of pretty details and finishing. I (of course) underestimated the need for precision when sewing all those pintucks, so I had to unpick the first panel I sewed, but after that it went smoothly and it turned out to be a really fun sew.
