Jaime Jacket
The Modern Sewing Co

Jaime Jacket
The Jaime Jacket is a casual menswear piece designed to feel quietly smart and easy to wear. It features a curved yoke that flows into the under sleeve seam which turns into a slit opening at the cuff. The front pockets have a dual opening and the back loop is on the outside of the jacket to create a unique design detail. Suitable fabrics include denim, canvas, twill/drill, corduroy, waxed cotton, or lightweight wool.

A #MSJaimeJacket for Sean 💕 I don’t sew for other people very often, but my partner wanted a chore coat for his birthday and I wanted to sew one 😌 We chose the Jaime Jacket by @modern_sewing_co for its interesting design features and clean finishes. This 10oz denim from @galafabrics was really nice to sew and it’s breaking in beautifully over time. Pattern mods: - Size M shoulder graded to XS hip according to his measurements. Pay attention to the size chart bc the chest measurement suggested size S, but the finished measurements for the shoulder (which are so detailed!!) showed that M would be better. It’s a perfect fit in the end ⭐️ - Longest sleeve length - Self-drafted chest pocket - Self-drafted pocket flaps “so I can climb trees without losing anything” 😘 Recommendations for sewing it: - take seam grading seriously for a clean finish - Take as much bulk out of the flat felled seams in the seam allowances as possible - Test your run and fell seams on scraps of self fabric before you start to get a sense of how far apart your topstitching lines will be - I found this helpful for designing my decorative topstitching - STEAM This jacket was a challenging piece to make and the flat-felled armholes aren’t perfect around the underarms, but overall we’re both super happy with how it turned out. I think it’s some of my best work to date and the planning we put in ahead of time really paid off. Sean looks so sharp in it and says he’s never had a jacket fit so well 💗 #sewing #slowfashion #handmade #memade

I finished a project! This is the #msjaimejacket by @modern_sewing_co, sewn with a thick organic cotton twill on the outside, and a printed cotton poplin as the lining. I’ve never made an outerwear garment before, so I figured it wouldn’t be that much harder to self-draft a lining. And if you’ve got a little lining, shouldn’t you make a little internal pocket? I had to make a few other alterations to the pattern: I cut it in XS initially (I am 34” chest, 29” waist), and had to: - Make the arm holes a little (~3cm) larger, as they were tight around my arm pits. - Reduce the shoulder slope by ~2cm, as there was cloth bunching between arm scye and shoulder. - Increase the width (~3cm) of the back panel at chest height, because I was getting drag lines with arm movement. - Extend the front panels (1.5cm each) at the centre/button edge - as it was just a *little* too tight to button up. Always make a draft / muslin if you can ! My poor domestic machine had a little trouble with the top stitching thread, and tried its best to chomp through the cloth a couple of times. So if you notice inconsistent top-stitching… it’s because I got tired of taking the plate off my machine to free the thread. You’ll notice a hand-stitched leaf on the bottom left pocket. This is entirely unrelated, and in no way key to the structurally integral to the jacket, following one such incident. Given how thick this cotton twill is, it’s freed up a lot of space from the fabric stash, so that’s a bonus. #sewing #menwhosew #mensewtoo #sewing #guyswhosew #fashion #tailoring #handmade #sewersofinstagram #isew #coutureaddict #handmadewardrobe #sewingblog #sewingblogger #sewersofinstagram #boyssewtoo

My last garments from @modern_sewing_co Capsule Wardrobe Course. Not entirely a showstopping end to a capsule wardrobe but here are the 5 men in my life all wearing a variation of the Jaime Jacket. From left to right they are made from corduroy from @fabricgodmother , corduroy from @merchantandmills , a recycled wool blanket from @britishblankets Co, Harris Tweed and 19th Century French linen flour sacks. Hacks include a variety of pockets, an action back and lining. I have so enjoyed this course. While I haven’t entirely acquired the discipline required to produce a coordinating capsule I have learnt many many core skills. I’m no longer intimidated by trousers and positively enjoy shirts with tricky plackets etc. I have also come to appreciate beautifully created patterns and am beginning to have the confidence to hack small details. #sewover50 #msjaimejacket

After one failed pattern selection and two toiles …. My husband said “it’s just what I wanted” ❤️. It doesn’t get better than that! 😊 This is the @modern_sewing_co #msjaimejacket or a very cool chore coat/travel jacket for an upcoming trip this fall. Light enough to wear over a shirt but also roomy enough to layer as the weather gets cooler. This had a lot of fittings and my client is fussy! 🤣 I originally cut an XL based on his chest measurement and finished measurements. It was too small. As I outlined in my last post, I used @inhousepatterns learnings to measure the pattern and a jacket that fit him well. I ended up sewing an XL2 and graded to an XL1 at the hip. He’s thrilled with the fit and it has room for a sweater underneath. He’s the king of layers.😂 I really love the design of this coat. All flat felled seams and the front patch pockets have a second hand opening at the side; very cool design. I added a small breast patch pocket not in the pattern at my husband’s request. He insisted my custom sewing label from @dutchlabelshop was on full display ❤️. I also added an inside zipper pocket for his passport and wallet when travelling. Label from @kylieandthemachine is a nod to our love of the Star Wars franchise. #ifyouknowyouknow I know that pocket will get plenty of use on our trip. Who doesn’t like more #pockets ? In the end we omitted the #cuffs and sewed small buttons to close the #placket. He preferred an open cuff to one that needed to be buttoned. #customizationsarecool The fabric is 12 oz non-stretch denim (colour Indigo) from @blackbirdfabrics . I pre-washed and dried the denim about 5 times to get the dye out and to soften up the denim before sewing. It was beautiful to work with and the blue colour is gorgeous. After many #toilesandtribulations we are done and he’s happy. Another #msjaimejacket from @modern_sewing_co . This time for no.3 son. Made from vintage French flour sacks with wooden duffel toggles. Hopefully get some photos of the boy in time! Size XL with very little alteration, different pockets as the linen fabric is super heavy.

And onto the next!! I found 2 whole rolls of old Halley Stevensons’ fabrics in a @scrapantics sale day last year and have been holding off using them until I knew exactly what I wanted to make. I think I’ve settled on the #msjaimejacket with a nice boxy fit and (hopefully) crisp lines. Haven’t decided on buttons yet…. And I’m hoping this stuff is still semi waterproof. It’s a Barbour design!! There’s plenty of this stuff, so I think I’ll make an #oxbowtote too.

Note to self - always check the printer scale when printing pdf patterns 🤦♀️. @modern_sewing_co #msjaimejacket @merchantandmills 300gsm 8 wale corduroy. Absolutely love this pattern, will have to make another in the right size!

Proud of this chore coat I made for my father this Christmas! The details in this pattern are amazing. The sizing is a bit interesting as my dad's measurements called for size XL, and I think he usually wears a size M in men's clothing but it fits very well based on the sizing guide. The only major moderation I made was cutting the body length to the XS size as the pattern is based on 6'1 measurements so the proportions are generous. Pattern: #msjaimejacket from @modern_sewing_co Fabric: Beautiful flecked denim (probably 12gsm) from Goodman Fabrics in Montreal. I used a contrasting grey thread which is 😚

I don't post my sewing creations much but I wanted to shout-out this pattern designer @modern_sewing_co for a really well designed pattern #msjaimejacket. I made this using some old purple twill and leftover indigo denim from my first attempt at making jeans. Plus some scrap batik from auntie @ishbellelow. Buttons from @stonemountainfabric

BACK IN STOCK: Our green needlecord is great for this time of year. It's thicker than a regular cotton but still has some drape to it, meaning it'll work well across a range of garments. There are lots of new patterns out at the moment suitable for corduroy and needlecord. The new @tillybuttons #sonnyjacket would be a really versatile make. Or for a men's pattern, the #msjaimejacket by the Modern Sewing Co looks like a really enjoyable sew. (And we have a dead ringer for their blue needlecord sample dropping on the website on Thursday this week.) The #msjaimejacket is a men's jacket that works great for women too (if you can keep your hands on it for long enough). I'm 5ft 10 and this is a size L which is a really nice loose fit although if I was making it for myself I'd use one of the shorter sleeves that's included in the pattern. I'm REALLY looking forward to some post-Christmas pictures of happy receivers of this piece 🎄🤗 Worn here with the #MSspringtrousers in a heavy brushed twill from @merchantandmills which I love.

A big, little project for myself 🤎 The #msjaimejacket by @modern_sewing_co in a beautiful green garbadine from @atelierbrunette. I shortened the body, made the cuffs a little wider and finished the facing with a floral bias binding 🪡

This is the Modern Sewing Jaime Jacket 👉 My new constant companion for a summer evening. I’ve been wanting to make this for sometime, specifically the arc of the yoke which is such a satisfying design detail. This pattern was designed for men and because I’m not very straight up and down, I made a lot of modifications, which were pretty easy to do. Two basic toiles got me there. The high contrast topstitching was the tricky part! This wonderfully soft, lighter-weight denim from @missmaudenz provided the casual drape I was going for. I might swap the buttons out in a year or so for something less 60s, but loving it for right now. I’m also planning a winter corduroy version with a bit more heft. The details (also in the last image, my New Year’s resolution 📝) #msjaimejacket in 90oz/300 light wash denim and lovely chalk buttons from Miss Maude Modified for A-line shape: Size M at shoulders, XL at hem. Length is size L and the low pocket placement also uses L markings. The fit is roomy enough to easily accommodate a winter jumper through the armscye. My measurements at the time were #89/34–75/29–103/41. The dress is also a recent self-drafted sewing finish! More details soon.

Jaime Jacket from @modern_sewing_co A lot of you may already know the emotional rollercoaster this jacket put me through… on a recent trip to Vancouver, my partner tried on the Filson Mackinaw Jacket and confessed he’s been eyeing it up for years but would never buy it (it was $700 and all the edges were raw on the inside? a true crime LOL) Conveniently, I had some deadstock Italian wool laying in my stash, so I decided to sew one as his Christmas gift 🎄 I picked the #MSJaimeJacket since it had a similar shape as his inspiration and I fell in love with the curved back yoke that flows into the sleeve + high end finishes like flat felled seams throughout. I can’t praise the instructions and construction enough, as it was such a breeze sewing the jacket, especially with a thicker wool. However, the size chart is extremely tricky - I originally sewed a size L based on his chest measurement and it fit extremely small, so I had to completely restart. Measuring other jackets he owns and comparing it to the finished garment measurements, he ended up needing a 2XL in this pattern which is a huge discrepancy. I’ve seen at least one other sewist post about the same issue, and I wish I knew about this before sewing my first Jaime Jacket! 🤪 After rushing the second Jaime Jacket in the right size for my partner, this first failed attempt turned into a lovely matching jacket for me! I cropped the jacket significantly to be hip-length and I couldn’t be happier with the boxy fit, but keep in mind this is how size L looks on my body (usually size 2 or XS). Despite all the issues with the size chart, I think I’d still recommend the pattern due to the lovely finishes and instructions, but be very very careful when picking your size! ❤️

This picture is from an Izakaya in Matsumoto, Japan. We hung our jackets up and this picture was born. So cool! We are 45 days into our 59 day tour of South Korea and Japan, and their unseasonably hot and humid fall has left these #memades in our suitcase. My husband calls them the #travellingjackets ❤️. But it’s full on fall now and we are wearing these every day. My husband keeps seeing jackets like his in stores, and always says “I like mine better.” ❤️❤️❤️❤️ 🧵Brian’s is on the left and is the @modern_sewing_co #msjaimejacket in a gorgeous denim from @blackbirdfabrics . 🧵 Mine is the @patternemporium_kate #pedowntowjacket in a periwinkle twill that I think I picked up at a garage sale for my #toile box. 🤯. A birthday present jacket 🧥 a month late but mainly because I initially chose the wrong type of pattern (the Ilford) and then I didn't have enough fabric with the new pattern! But we got there. I absolutely loved working this pattern, it was so well explained for a newbie and the run and fell seams meant that it could be unlined as all the seams are encased! It fits perfectly too. My favourite features are the hidden loop behind the collar and how the pockets are actually a side pocket (for hands) and then a top entry pocket (for everything else). So easy but so effective. The fabric was a heavy-weight linen from Drapers Fabrics in Newtown. It was such a joy to sew - ironed easily, and despite being thick was quite spongey (?) to sew so it went easily through my machine. I regret pre-washing it myself as I later realised it was dry clean only, but any splotchiness is undetectable now thankfully. All in all, it's been my favourite project so far! #msjaimejacket for my partner!! Sewed during my second round of COVID 😷 Feeling like this was the most challenging (but fun!) project yet, with my first contrast top stitching, slit cuffs, and run/fell seams. Mr Whistlebare wanted a summer jacket made from the Harris Tweed we bought from @harristweedcarloway when we visited a few years ago. This is a hacked @modern_sewing_co #msjaimejacket which we are both really pleased with. Hacks include pleated pockets with flaps, action back pleat and mohair and wool blend lining. #sewover50

Usually I’m a pretty selfish sewer but as soon the #msjaimejacket by @modern_sewing_co was published I wanted to make it. It’s a very good pattern, I thoroughly enjoyed the process and can highly recommend. An absolute winner with my reluctant model, made with soft jumbo cord I bought from @backstitchshop he loves it! Next up, their newly released men’s worker trousers? Probably!

All is not lost. My oversized #msjaimejacket is not a bad fit on no. 4 son and is even approved by his girlfriend! Still a bit long even on 6’1”, maybe try it on no. 1 son, he’s 6’3”.

The #msjaimejacket in its many forms. This has been a real hit since it launched in November. The first jacket was the first sample of this design and you’ll spot it has slightly different pockets. The next 2 versions are much cleaner which I preferred. It’s a unisex design but cut to accommodate a male body to help build up our range of mens patterns. More on this soon as March will be MENSWEAR MONTH ⚡️
