I used a really nice textured cotton from @stonemountainfabrics. Trying to slowly add to my white top collection. . Having somewhat of a pants crisis right now - many of my handmade pants have worn out and I’m mostly wearing store bought Levis which are fine I guess but I would like to sew some more pants with a more modern silhouette - however as a short torso/long limbed body type not all pants look proportional - wide leg full length pants for example just look like a giant wall of fabric to me. Happy New Year! This is my first sewing project for 2024 and turned out to be my best make yet! This make was 100% inspired by @mmadalynne quilted slip dress. Here's my take. I made this as a pinafore dress for the colder season so I can wear layers underneath. This is fully reversible and some hand sewing was necessary but totally worth it. I love both sides and cannot choose my favorite side. Pattern is #S9729 #simplicity9729 Made size M. Lengthen skirt by 6". I washed in hot water and dried in high heat but it did not shrink as much as I expected so I took in at bust about 1/2". Fabrics: Black Essex cotton linen from Robert Kaufman and Skeletons of the sea cotton by @alexanderhenryfabrics Batting is Warm & natural. Edit--- Worn with my gray #seamworkastoria by @seamwork underneath the black side. This top is a perfect layer piece and this made me want to make this pinafore dress. Last weekend I got to meet Giuseppe Ribaudo (Giucy Giuce) and take classes from him in EPP and improvisational FPP. It was a treat to meet him, and to get this photo of both of us wearing clothing featuring his Mini Series blocks. Giuseppe was continuing to celebrate his 40th birthday at a @Salemstitches retreat at Berry Hill in South Boston, VA. It was the third Salem Stitches retreat I've attended with bestie @lapisquilter, and we had a great time! To prepare for his birthday party we were all asked to make a party hat, and surprisingly mine was one of four winners! In between the classes by Giuseppe, and a Laure Heine collage workshop, we both made quilt tops using the Write on White pattern by Zen Chic. Amazing how different a quilt pattern can look when using different fabrics! I've been asked to come back next year a teach a class in incorporating quilt blocks into a jacket like I did with my Mini Series blocks. Hi people, This is my first Tamarack Jacket by Grainline Studio. It definitely won’t be the last. I’ve been aware of this pattern ever since it first came out and finally bought it. I can see now why it’s stood the test of time. It’s beautifully drafted, goes together well and lends itself to all sorts of ideas and variations while remaining a simple quilted jacket. This is my very inexpert trial run with stash stretch poly jacquard (daft idea!) leftover lining, leftover thin batting. I kept this as straight forward as possible using patch pockets, serged insides, big straight line grid quilting with my walking foot. Even so it was quite a bit of work. A quilting refresher course! 😄 I lengthened the front a bit to minimise the high-low hem and I went a size too big not knowing if quilting would significantly shrink the pieces. I ended up trimming it down a size and it’s still roomy but I don’t mind that. I used cotton tape to stabilise the neckline before the binding went on. I have a stash busting version in pieced fabrics for spring in mind. There is all sorts of inspiration under the hashtag. I’m looking forward to responding to comments on my new #quiltcoat with “Thanks, it used to be a curtain”. 😜 I started this project in 2020 (during lockdown in Melbourne), when I thought it would be fun to cut up a curtain and some fabric scraps and sew them back together. I was curious to see how a budget cotton curtain would compare to Essex linen. In true craft tart fashion, I made exactly one block and then shoved it into a container (where it stayed for five years) while I started several other projects. 🤣 I pulled it out recently and had the idea of finishing it up and turning it into a quilt coat. The coats I made last year shrank in the wash so this time I washed the quilted panel before cutting out my pattern pieces. For those that are interested in the details, the quilt pattern is the free #tinytilesquilt by @purlsoho, the accent and lining fabric a combination of different Shimmer collections by @jennifersampou and the binding some long hoarded Nettorious by @rubystarsociety. The jacket pattern is the #tamarackjacket by @grainlinestudio (my fifth!) and the label is by @kylieandthemachine (how perfect is it?). I also turned some of the tiny triangle offcuts into some matching earrings using some ModPodge and a leaf-shaped die. I’ve still got heaps of offcuts and a whole other curtain to play with but they will probably go back into storage while I play with other projects.

Time for another Tamarack jacket! This is my second, and made with a quilted cotton bedcover, found at the Sallies for $3. Quilting wasn't fantastic so I ended up redoing quite a bit. I lined it with a nice colourful satin from Spotlight and bound it with the sides of the bedcover. I love this jacket, although I over-thought a lot of the binding and then the snaps. Glad it all came together so well. #tamarackjacket

Most of November was spent making this #Tamarackjacket from @grainlinestudio. I had purchased 2 yards of this quilted double gauze a couple years ago from @stonemountainfabric and it sat in my stash waiting for me to get over my trepidation of cutting into it. This year I added another lovely quilted fabric to my collection which pushed me to do something with the older one. I shouldn’t have worried. The muslin for the jacket came together really well. Except for blending between sizes (Sz 4 at the bust to 12 at the hip), I didn’t make any changes in fit. The jacket itself came together very quickly. I took my time hand sewing the second pass of the binding because I never catch the entire length when I machine stitch. It’s a good thing I like hand sewing :-) What took the most time was applying the snaps. I practiced once, but that wasn’t enough. 3 of 4 snaps wouldn’t close - I must’ve hammered the crap out of it ! So, after removing all the snaps and trying to mend the holes (swipe to the end), I used sewn-on snaps. The other thing I wish I’d done better was to practice applying the welt pockets. I don’t like how one of them turned out. For my next jacket I plan to use a zipper and patch pockets. #grainlinestudiotamarackjacket #isewmyownclothes #selfsewnwardrobe #bayareasews #sewingjackets

Made another @grainlinestudio #tamarackjacket, cropped and fully reversible, out of this amazing @danakinter quilted coverlet from @adairs (inspired by @frocksandfroufrou and @katieparrottmakes and their #danakinterxadairs makes). A lot of firsts with this @grainlinestudio #tamarackjacket: my first time quilting, first time making my own binding and first time making a jacket! Definitely the most long-term project I've taken on, but getting sick two weeks into term 3 meant that I spent my Saturday indoors finishing off what I started in the school holidays. Pretty obsessed with the result! While doing some Insta research for quilting pattern inspiration, I came across the tamarack that @hollybwel created and tried my best to get the different parts to line up, and they did! A lot of firsts with this @grainlinestudio #tamarackjacket: my first time quilting, first time making my own binding and first time making a jacket! Definitely the most long-term project I've taken on, but getting sick two weeks into term 3 meant that I spent my Saturday indoors finishing off what I started in the school holidays. Pretty obsessed with the result! While doing some Insta research for quilting pattern inspiration, I came across the tamarack that @hollybwel created and tried my best to get the different parts to line up, and they did! Love that I found the perfect use for the @miranda_illustration readers fabric from @hansenprintandtex. My English paper pieced @grainlinestudio #tamarackjacket is finally finished! It is another entry to #magamnovelnovember as it is my first time making the much loved pattern, and it is such a novelty that I have finally finished it!!! Thank you so much to @sewing_in_spain @suestoney and @finishedseams for hosting. I first started the project in March 2020 when we were living in Beijing and I needed something to keep my fingers and mind busy as we were in the midst of COVID-19, and I really appreciated the concentration needed to cut out and glue, and then hand sew the the pieces together in the + shapes. By May that year I finished piecing and quilting the back and then I put it down until February 2022. By then we had moved to Guangzhou in China, and whilst in the middle of a COVID related 2 week lock in in our apartment compound I finished piecing and sewing all the pieces and created binding from one of my husband's dress shirts. I didn't pick it up for the two years we lived in KL in Malaysia as it was just too hot to sew, let alone wear. The changing weather here in Mexico, especially the cold temperatures in our house, prompted me to complete it. I think it is too big, and the wadding is too thick, and I'm not sure yet whether I will add fastenings, but it is finally finished 😂 This was a complete #refashion as it was made from #upcycledclothing and fabric scraps from other projects in a mix of cotton and linen and some denim. Stitchmas 14 - the quilted tamarack coat ! One of my favorite projects of the year FOR SURE. I’ve made two quilted jackets prior, but both were out of old bedding quilts, thicker, stiffer, maybe just less nice material? I had to learn how to fit it better and wanted to make one from a quilt I made! I spent so much time making these half square triangles 😵‍💫 and just kept telling myself to be patient. All the HSTs were made from leftover stash fabric (mostly Brussels and Essex). Using good quality batting and fabric really made a difference in the comfort of the jacket. Learn from me! 😂 OH and she’s reversible!!! I liked the fit of the #tamarackjacket by @grainlinestudio so went with that pattern! Then added some snaps for closures. This Tamarack from @remivailstudio immediately caught my eye when it popped up in our feed. Created for the #AurifilArtisan wearable challenge, Tamara made a whole cloth quilt from @fableism Sprout wovens and @artgalleryfabrics Foraged Garland Three, then long arm quilted the entire thing with an allover bird pattern from @sewshabbyquilting using @aurifil thread and finally cut and made the jacket. ⁠ ⁠ What really stood out to me was the detail at the binding, using a gingham really makes the lines of the jacket pop. I made a Liberty Tamarack! It’s a @notionfabric shop sample, and also an example for the @grainlinestudio #tamarackjacket class I’m currently teaching there. (But eventually it will come home to me 😎) I made size 14 from the plus size range—my current measurements match the size chart exactly. The plus version has a bust dart that’s been rotated to the shoulder; otherwise the design and construction look to be the same as for the straight size jacket. These were my first welt pockets, and they came out well(t)! I opted to hand stitch the pocket bags down on the inside of the coat because I didn’t want them flopping around. I thought a lot about the inner seam finishes and made a little sampler auditioning six different options, but I didn’t take any pics to show what I ended up doing! Going to try to make a reel about it… The fabrics I used are @libertyfabrics Tana Lawn, the Summer Blooms print in coral, and @figofabrics Tactile in lavender stripe for the lining. I Found a quilted throw at a resale shop for $7.00 that I thought would be perfect for making the Tamarack Jacket by @grainlinestudio. I really debated which side of the throw to make the outside, the floral or striped side. I finally decided to put the floral design on the outside. I unpicked all of the binding around the throw to reuse for binding the outside edges and all the inside seams. Fortunately I had plenty of binding for the entire jacket. I have not sewn clothing for many years so this is my first project moving back into sewing my own clothes again. I am thrilled with how this turned out. I did decide not to put pockets on since I didn’t have matching fabric for doing the welt Pockets. I did make two pockets out of the quilted fabric but felt they looked too bulky on the jacket. I plan on making another jacket but with making my own quilted fabric with a light batting. ✨Make Nine 2024 Review✨ ⁣ ⁣ I’m really pleased that this year I have managed to complete all of the projects in my #makenine2024 plans. There was a point when I thought I might not finish them but managed to finish 4 in the last 3 months. ⁣ ⁣ The first grid shows photos of my nine finished makes and the second grid shows the plans I had made. This year I decided to pick nine new patterns that I wanted to make but hadn’t had the opportunity to yet. ⁣ ⁣ Here are the details of my finished garments. ⁣ Working from left to right starting at the top row: ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 1️⃣ #donnyshirt @fridaypatterncompany I ended up making three of these blouses and love wearing all of them. I took a quilted jacket class almost a year ago and made this jacket. But I hated the length of it so I haven't worn it for a whole year. So tonight I decided to cut 4 inches off the bottom and now I'm loving it! I really want to add toggle closures to it instead of buttons... Most of November was spent making this #Tamarackjacket from @grainlinestudio. I had purchased 2 yards of this quilted double gauze a couple years ago from @stonemountainfabric and it sat in my stash waiting for me to get over my trepidation of cutting into it. This year I added another lovely quilted fabric to my collection which pushed me to do something with the older one. I shouldn’t have worried. The muslin for the jacket came together really well. Except for blending between sizes (Sz 4 at the bust to 12 at the hip), I didn’t make any changes in fit. The jacket itself came together very quickly. I took my time hand sewing the second pass of the binding because I never catch the entire length when I machine stitch. It’s a good thing I like hand sewing :-) What took the most time was applying the snaps. I practiced once, but that wasn’t enough. 3 of 4 snaps wouldn’t close - I must’ve hammered the crap out of it ! So, after removing all the snaps and trying to mend the holes (swipe to the end), I used sewn-on snaps. The other thing I wish I’d done better was to practice applying the welt pockets. I don’t like how one of them turned out. For my next jacket I plan to use a zipper and patch pockets. #grainlinestudiotamarackjacket #isewmyownclothes #selfsewnwardrobe #bayareasews #sewingjackets

Definitely a much quicker make when you don't quilt it yourself! I lazily just folded over the printed side for the hems, which added a cool detail to the plain side. This cooler weather means I cab get more use out of my hacked Tamarack Jacket from @grainlinestudio I got a little nervous when it was suddenly in the 70s and 80s a few weeks ago. A lot of firsts with this @grainlinestudio #tamarackjacket: my first time quilting, first time making my own binding and first time making a jacket! Definitely the most long-term project I've taken on, but getting sick two weeks into term 3 meant that I spent my Saturday indoors finishing off what I started in the school holidays. Pretty obsessed with the result! While doing some Insta research for quilting pattern inspiration, I came across the tamarack that @hollybwel created and tried my best to get the different parts to line up, and they did! Love that I found the perfect use for the @miranda_illustration readers fabric from @hansenprintandtex. It isn't perfect, there are lots of things that I probably didn't do exactly "right", and lots of lines that arent exactly straight, but I really don't mind! I added some length (about 3 inches) to the sleeves so that i could roll the cuff to reveal the lining, without the sleeves ending up too short. After trying it on, I also took in the sleeves to make them more fitted. Didn't add pockets because I didn't want to take away from the quilting pattern. Used the "finished garment measurements" rather than the suggested pattern measurements and it fits perfectly! Five hundred, twenty-five thousand, six hundred minutes 🎶… is how much time it felt like I put into this quilted coat project a couple of winters back. All jokes aside, it was SO worth it. Good things take time, and this is still my favorite garment. It feels so good to walk out into the world in something I created for me, and custom to me. This is a feeling everyone deserves! Sewing a larger project like this one used to feel impossible to me. I’m a busy lady! BUT 30 minutes (sometimes 5) here and there adds up. Remember, you are a precious object and you deserve time to yourself to do the things you love.
