Well, it only took 8 years. I picked the sunniest time of day to take pics of this @grainlinestudio #cascadedufflecoat that I started sewing literally years ago. And technically this is the practice run for the real thing 🙈. Burgundy poly coating from @fabricland.canada , as is the apple green bemberg lining. The floral hood lining/zipper fabric was a gift from my sister's fashion school days. Leather is upcycled from a very beat up thrift jacket. The toggles. Oh man, those toggles are my fav. I got them off @etsy from a BC seller that no longer sells on Etsy. They're real wood! And you already know that flower on the back was hand embroidered by yours truly. Despite taking for-ev-er to make (not the fault of the pattern, I just lost interest), I am quite glad I tested the pattern before cutting up my wool coating. The jacket is pretty snug across the shoulders so I likely won't be wearing this out and about. The bottom is graded out but I think I'll grade out more when I do my "good copy", just so I can wear my bulky sweaters in it comfortably. ANYWAYS, whaddya think? I spent hours cutting and sticking the pdf, with a kingsized hangover from mum’s 80th birthday party the night before. Thank goodness I was sober for the pattern-matching. . The fabric is a wool mix from @colessewingcentre in Nottingham. I’m going there on Saturday for a Sit and Sew day with lovely sewing friends. . Details! For my #cascadedufflecoat I made several changes to the pattern. Typically, when I select a pattern to sew, any pattern, I do a web search to look at photos and read reviews of what people did and did not do with the pattern. So helpful. In that spirit, I thought I would share some secrets from my Cascade Duffle.  Let's start with the pockets. I felt like the pockets on the short version should be quite a bit smaller to accommodate the size and style of the coat. I took 1" off the width and 2" off the length. A few reviewers had mentioned that the patch pockets were cosmetic only and they aren't wrong. After making the pockets smaller, I also rounded off the bottom corners to mimic the roundness of the collar.  The zipper inset was my next point of change. I like that touch in theory, but I've learned that I've had to be careful when using contrasting fabric that "peeks" out because in the past, many times I've regretted that decision. This coating fabric was also really thick and I could see using the coating fabric as the zipper inset was going to add a ton of bulk to that area. So I opted to create a seam in the front placket piece to place the zipper in. This worked well and helped to eliminate some bulk in the center front. To tailor this coat, I decided to combine some methods that have worked well for me in the past. I wanted this coat to be very polished. I decided to padstitch the undercollar. I used fusible weft in the upper collar. I also used fusible weft throughout the body/bodice of this coat because I've really liked the soft structure this gives to a coat. I underlined the sleeves in cotton muslin to aid in keeping the elbow wrinkles at bay. During the muslin phase, I noticed that the shoulder could use a little help from a shoulder pad and sleeve head. This fabric was quite heavy and really pulled on the sleeves, so I had to double up sleeve heads to keep it from collapsing in the middle.  I could go on and on, but if you've made it to this point in this post, you're a champ!  . . . . #thejoyoftailoring #coatmaking #tailoring #memade #isewmyownclothes

We interrupt this social media hiatus for.... COAT SEASON! A couple of years (and a baby) ago, I decided that I could really use a new coat. I got a little greedy and wanted more than one. I ended up making 3 at the time and taking a deep dive into the very technical and architectural world of tailoring.  Here's the first of 4 coats (soon to be 5) that I wanted to show and tell. This was the first one I made that year and it's a hand tailored short version of @grainlinestudio Cascade Duffle. I made several changes to the pattern itself. I'll post about those next. I had a small amount of this synthetic aqua melton and had very few options for a coat so this short duffle was a match made in coat tailoring heaven. It's loaded with lots of hidden hand stitches and I created my own version of how to put in a lining, which is just a combination of several other versions out there. This coat was lined in a heavyweight silk charmeuse and topped off with handmade toggles, which are enough to give one a coronary. This trench is a recent make that I've been enjoying wearing much more than expected. I knew it would be a staple, since it's classic and versatile, but it's also surprisingly warm and the voluminous pockets are probably my favourite pockets yet! The pattern is from a French pattern magazine (not remotely size inclusive unfortunately) in a dead stock cotton twill and viscose acetate lining (spot the ants!) from @helloheidifabrics . My main mods were adding a hood (borrowed from the #cascadedufflecoat ), longer sleeves, reducing sleeve cap ease, large pocket bags, and shaping at the waist. The pinky purple flat piping is a fabric I was given maybe 18 years ago that has been waiting for the right project to do it justice. The trench coat collar hook and bar is from @newcrafthouse . Not sure I've shared the shirt before, it's a @grainlinestudio #archershirt in deadstock linen from @rainbowfabrickilburn in my favourite shade of orange. Managed to find perfectly matching buttons in my go-to local button shop!

19 years ago, I took a long walk around the neighbourhood and stopped for one “last” lunch at the beach wearing my favourite roomy wool embroidered coat (only pic I have is #7) a coat I’d had since I was 19. The next day, on the 19th, I became a mother. When the coat became tattered and threadbare, I gave it away. But I could never forget it. One of my main #fallplanner2022 goals: to recreate that piece. And so I made this updated version, which uses ribbon instead of machine embroidery and has a hood! I don’t think I’ve ever cried looking at a finished garment before. It’s just…so many feelings, and warm… #thenorwayoftheyear Pattern: @grainlinestudio #cascadedufflecoat View B Fabric: Brushed Wool Melton Blend in Black from @blackbirdfabrics - Rayon Bemberg lining from @affordabletextiles interlining/cotton batting from @macfabhome Ribbon from stash. Snap kit online. Modifications: instead of using the toggles, I added magnetic snaps along the inside zipper placket/placket and on the underside only of the outside placket. Decorated with ribbons as shown. I broke 3 all purpose needles along the way, until I switched to a jeans needle. Ahhh. And I’m still not done lint-rolling the melton, which got fuzzy from the interlining. This coat took at least 36 full hours to cut and sew. At my hourly rate, I’d say that’s couture. #sewistsofinstagram #isewmyownclothes . 🪬

My other big work in progress! First coat I’ve ever tried to make and it is slooooow going. It’s really taking me a while to get used to the pace of sewing with a baby in the house and having to do everything in short bursts rather than the marathon sessions I used to do! It’s good though to take my time over this project and aim for quality over speed. This beautiful navy (hard to photograph) wool was a Christmas present and I really want to do it justice and not rush. Deshalb ist dieser Mantel für den #wintersewalong von @kleidercolle und @verurira auch erst gestern fertig genäht und heute fotografiert worden 😅. Aber ich liebe ihn. So sehr. Alle anderen Jacken können ausziehen! Eigentlich schlicht, aber irgendwie doch nicht. Und so ein bisschen neonpink schadet ja auch nie! Und auch einfach saubequem! Aaaaber genug philosophiert. Hier sind die Fakten: Genäht habe ich den #cascadedufflecoat von @grainlinestudio . Der Schnitt liegt schon ewig hier und die Vernunft hat gesagt, dass ich keinen neuen Schnitt kaufen sollte. Aber ich hatte eigentlich viel mehr Lust auf einen Parka... Tja, und so wurde eben ein - wie ich ihn liebevoll nenne - #cascadeduffleparka daraus. Our quilted me-mades 🪡⁠ ⁠ Helen and Caroline have made several quilted garments between them:⁠ ⁠ 🧵 Helen made a @GrainlineStudio #TamarackJacket from yarn-dyed cotton and a linen/viscose slub. She quilted it with wide horizontal lines and closed it with hooks and eyes. ⁠ ⁠ 🧵 Caroline made her own Tamarack from ⁠a lightweight denim shirting, lined it with a gingham cotton flannel, and put snaps down the front. ⁠ ⁠ 🧵 Helen hacked a Grainline #CascadeDuffleCoat into a vest! My other big work in progress! First coat I’ve ever tried to make and it is slooooow going. It’s really taking me a while to get used to the pace of sewing with a baby in the house and having to do everything in short bursts rather than the marathon sessions I used to do! It’s good though to take my time over this project and aim for quality over speed. This beautiful navy (hard to photograph) wool was a Christmas present and I really want to do it justice and not rush. I sewed a real coat! This is the @grainlinestudio Cascade Duffel coat, which I finished ages ago and have been wearing a whole lot but have finally just photographed. You can see more if this outfit on my blog. Link in my profile 👉🏻 I made the size 0 on top & 8 on bottom. (My bust is 31.25” & my hips are 39”.) My only real mod was to leave off the toggles & use magnetic snaps for closures instead. Oh, and I sewed the sleeves with a 1/4” SA cause they were too tight & I was so relieved that worked! I got that wool/mohair coating from @blackbirdfabrics. It’s super warm & practical & I love it almost completely. I accidentally sewed the lining shut before doing the fancy trick to attach the lining to the shell so the lining does sometimes poke out if the sleeve cuff if I forget to adjust it. And my hem isn’t perfect but for a first coat, I’m pretty pleased. It took me a very long time to sew and I made a lot of mistakes as I went, but the directions were good & I’m glad I learned so many new things. Tell me about a project you made that took forever!
