I finally got around to sewing the Grainline Studio duffle bag in January- one of the first patterns I bought about 3 years ago. I used an old sail and straps are from reverse garbage. I used my industrial walking foot sewing machine to sew this one, it sews through anything and while the sail is thin, the straps are super thick. I#portsidetravelset #grainlinestudio #sailbags

In the middle of January we went to Victoria for a weekend. At the beginning of January, I decided to make duffle bags for my kids because the bags they have been using are too small now that their clothes are bigger. I came nowhere close to finishing these in time. I am not an experienced bag maker and I did not enjoy the process. They became a reason to avoid my sewing room. I've had this pattern since it first came out and I made a duffle bag then that turned out ok but not great and I blamed myself. This time I would also like to blame the pattern. I found the pattern pieces weren't always the right size and at times the instructions were incorrect/missed a step. I'm also disappointed that the littlest pouch isn't lined but I was pretty done by the time I got to those. These issues could be updated since I bought this pattern years ago and I will allow that there could definitely be user error. I'm unlikely to reach for it again. My kids chose their fabrics and zipper colours and I muttered things to myself like "they better take these with them to college" while I was making them. Tonight I showed them the finished product and both were really excited. Z said "wow, these look like they are from the store. They are so beautiful. You did awesome at sewing." They're ready for summer holidays at least. And college. I can finally share a few gifts I made for the holidays as they've all been recieved. This is the @grainlinestudio #portsidetravelset #doppkit . I've mentioned this previously on my old blog that the drafting for the duffel bag and little zip were great, but the dopp kit was off, so I made my usual changes: •Piece 9: I cut 0 contrast, 3 lining, and 0 interfacing with a note from past me to interface the outside pieces instead. •Piece 10: I added a cut one interfacing since this end up on the outer shell. •Piece 12: Again, I added another interfacing so instead of one it's cut two. •MOST importantly, I redrafted piece 14: While the cut directions remain the same, I added an inch to the width, and a half inch to the height, otherwise none of the ends match when assembling the bag. I used leftover black velvet for the solid, and a yellow plaid I had in my stash for the top. I'm quite pleased with my pattern matching (look at slides 2 and 5!), especially since it's matching across four separate cut pieces and a zip in between. The inner piece is leftover from my fav purple #kaffefassett cabbage dress I made quite a few years back. I went with purple and yellow (/gold) for school colours. I really, really love going through old fabric scraps and mixing and matching to find the perfect set. Plus it feels good to use what I already have! #carleemctsews #niagarasews

Hot off my sewing machine is this #portsidetravelset made entirely out of thrifted materials, down to the zipper, from @recreativedenver (the best place to buy zippers, if you ask me) and @craft_box_colorado where I got this squishy-soft quilted ticking-stripe cotton. I didn’t have quite enough to eke out the dopp bag, so I’ll have to make that another time. Last trip we took made me realize we need some more luggage, and since our road trips are usually to outdoorsy destinations, duffels are much more practical than suitcases. @grainlinestudio @recreativedenver @craft_box_colorado

Continuing on my sailing themed bags, may I present to you the @grainlinestudio #PortsideTravelSet #PortsideDoppKit . Everything came from my stash - the recycled sail, the chunky zips, the webbing for the handle, and the labels. This was a birthday gift for sailing-mad Mr DaisySewCrazy (aka @crazyflagman), so I filled it with some sailing essentials - very smooth Australian whiskey, Berocca, and a few travel sized toiletries. As usual, I had a few hiccups when making the bag 🤦‍♀️. I misread the instructions about the front zippered pocket, so the zip is not covered. I also didn’t want to bother lining the bag, but didn’t think through the implications of that for the pocket, so I retro-fitted the pocket with a few additional pieces I had cut but didn’t need (whaaat??). Sewing the curves around a rectangle was a bit tricky but the carbon fibre sail was rather forgiving, so I just went for it. This felt like my most ambitious sewing project, as I’d never tackled buckles and straps before. I got this brilliant Shining fabric printed on heavy duty canvas, and the hard-wear I needed was surprisingly easy to source online. I love a project where I learn some new skills, and this definitely ticked that box. The first time I used it, I was convinced it would fall apart on me, however it’s proved itself to be the most resilient bag I’ve ever owned. This luggage set now comes everywhere with me. Matching shirts/dress with fabric from @lakesmakerie Franks is a #ikateemarcel, mine is a #closetcoretshirt, and Mae’s is a Harper dress from Dear Darling Designs on Etsy. Andy originally said he didn’t want one but has changed his tune since seeing how cool we look. Mae is into the twirling lately and has three Harper dresses with garage sale fabrics that she’s wearing in solid rotation. We are safely home from our fabulous week at #berninauniversity2024 which means I finally have some time to post the rest of my handmade for the trip! This isn't technically an outfit, but since i struggle with allocating time for myself for personal projects, I used BU as an excuse to catch up on some #selfcaresewing . This is the duffel bag from the #portsidetravelset from @grainlinestudio . I've made this pattern many times, and love it, but the zipper broke on the one that I made for myself way back, and it was easier to start fresh than go backwards, so that's what I did! The outside is made from a #charleyharperfabric from @birchfabrics that I bought online during a small at @fabricworm . The zipper is from @textilediscount , and the striped coordinate is a cotton canvas bought years ago on the flat fold pile at my local @fieldsfabrics . The lining (a black Kona cotton) and this very cool strapping with a little bit of glitz both came from @seamsfabric.kzoo . Due to the nature of Vermont weather - dark and cloudy for many days on end- it is a rare day when I can capture the exact color, texture and feel of a bag. I’m so happy to document this custom duffle before handing it off to its person! . . This is the duffle from @grainlinestudio #portsidetravelset . I made one for myself and my kids earlier this winter and have found it to actually carry what I need for a weekend away, no extra bags needed. It’s simple, I love using it, and I love looking at it ✨. All of my hardware and leather for this bag came from @buckleguycom because their quality for heavy duty stuff is unparalleled 💪🏻. The cotton webbing is from @agraffsupplies - I have bought webbing from many different suppliers and this webbing is hands-down the best, sturdy not flimsy, a really great feel for a solid duffle. The hardest part was finding an antique brass double pull zipper in the size and color I needed, but I’ve realized that’s par for the course for zippers🤔…can any other bag makers relate?

Another homemade gift, this time for Nicole. My freshly finished @grainlinestudio #portsidetravelset ! With bonus self drafted matching makeup brush roll! I’ve been wanting a weekend size duffel and this is perfect! It might even be big enough for a week depending on how you pack and if you bring a laundry bag for your dirties. This actually went together really easily! And all the fabric I used was leftover from other projects, so I only had to buy the hardware and webbing for the straps. The plain black is a synthetic canvas that I had bought for my black fennel Fanny pack. The polka dots are quilting left from a popover dress, and the cat print inside lining was from a matching popover dress for me and button up shirt for my husband. These all went together really easily and I’m so happy with how they turned out! The Dopp kit and brush roll replace a makeup bag set that I made probably 10 years ago in high school that was still using! I’ll gift those to my little niece, she’ll get some good use out of them.
