Behold my #GrainlineFelix! I made this a couple of years ago (wait was it all the way back in Nov 2021? Yes!), in a beautiful black and gold Ajrakh print. My only regret is not inserting a piping in the neckline and front waist to show off the cool design lines, which get lost in this busy print. I made a size 2, graded out to 4 at the waist, and it works well. The pockets are perfectly positioned, which doesn’t happen often with my long arms. My fabric has more body than recommended, which makes the flutter sleeves wing out slightly, but that's fine. The neckline technique is very clever and by sewing different sections in different stages, you end up with everything clean finished and no seam allowances in sight. So I was mildly annoyed to find that the armscye seam allowances would remain visible as written. But here’s how to get around that: 1. Finish the bodice up to the point where the neckline is done but side seams are open. Stitch the side seams of the main and lining only a couple of inches immediately below the underarm 2. Finish your sleeves. They should be tubes, not flat. 3. Baste your sleeves to the main fabric’s armscye, RS to RS as usual. 4. Now reach in between the layers of the main and lining bodice, up from the waist towards the armscye, and grab the raw edges of the main armscye + basted in sleeve and lining armscye. Sew them together. You won’t be able to do this in a continuous circle, but will have to work from underarm to shoulder in two passes. Trim and finish the armscye seam allowance, press everything, and rejoice in your clean finished armscye! I'm reposting some pictures of the Felix Dress which I made nearly four years ago because it's been such a great make. I'm on holiday in France at the moment and was enjoying wearing it today - again. The pattern is from Grainline Studio and it's a faux wrap dress, fully lined with great, deep front pockets set into the curved waist seam. The waist seam dips round and down at the back. Let's continue the parade of dresses, shall we? It's the path of least resistance. 😂👗 I tried out the Felix Dress for the first time. I love the curved waistline shape and the beautiful crossover front. Total perfection when paired with linen. Based on reviews, I'm not the only one to be surprised that the whole thing is supposed to be lined! 👀😂 Definitely guilty of not reading all the details before purchasing, but I know that's on me. I was poking around to find unlined hacks and really like the one by @cocos.loft and her mention of several adjustments. I narrowed the shoulders (good call!) for the sleeveless version and used two right front bodice pieces for a true crossover. It was initially still quite enormous. Before my on-the-fly adjustment, the bottom of the front V ended quite below the bottom of my bra(!) and that's more exposure than I bargained for, so I ended up crossing over the front pieces a few more inches and gathering the center front skirt surplus, and eh, I think this turned out fairly wearable. Which is to say, I've already worn it twice. I also ended up gathering the center of the back skirt too. The back skirt is a solid 4" wider than the back bodice, and there was no way that seam was going to ease together well and lay flat. 🤔 Maybe I missed something since I went utterly rogue on the instructions, though. 🤷‍♀️ I shall just deem this a continuity detail now that the front and back match. I will totally sew this again, but likely size down the top on paper before cutting, and narrow the skirt pieces so only one or none needs gathering. The overall dress shape is stunning and exactly how I want to flounce around in linen. Felix Dress from @grainlinestudio. Linen from @fabricmart. I know, brown. But in person, it's really golden and nuanced and very beautiful. Taming challis. This is the bodice of the Grainline Felix dress, all bias cuts. Left on their own they would go wonky. I pinned the fabric on the pattern piece, pressed the challis into place, and applied stay tape to every single edge.
