I was working from home during the day and then went immediately off to the pub for the evening. Apologies to the sensitive amongst you for the decor! It’s a very friendly pub really! I have a lot to say about this pattern. First and foremost, the instructions and the way the collar and mitered hems came together are so clear and amazing and satisfying. I love the slightly asymmetrical lapel. However, you might note that I have no mitered hems, because the dress version of this pattern is just way to tent like—I think the cocoon effect doesn’t work with the split hem and it just looked like Scrooge’s nightgown. Fabric choice could have made an impact here too. So, TLDR; buy the pattern, make the top not the dress. ⁣⁣ 🥳⁣⁣ Mods include shortening the sleeves to more of a bracelet length and adding a touch of velvet. Since I am a glutton for making under pressure AND the sweater is ahead of schedule (I finished the back piece last night) I am attempting to make a full outfit for st Patrick’s day- a #grainlineaugusta in that super peppy green #tomatotomahtofabric and some black crepe lucille trousers. I brought a mostly me-made wardrobe to our Amsterdam trip. One of those items was my Augusta top. The asymmetrical lapels are super cool, and a fun, challenging detail to sew. Grainline's patterns are always extremely detailed and clear, so I had no problem getting good results. Augusta shirt pattern by Grainline Studio, long sleeve top view sewn in size 10. Fabric is a crisp cotton shirting.

Happy birthday to me 🎈 For the last couple years, I’ve eschewed making any big life plans for myself. That’s unusual — I usually have at least a couple things cooking. (Go big or go home, am I right?) But with the pandemic, it felt like just surviving was enough, and there was pleasure (or at least grim satisfaction) in slowing down a little bit. But over the last few months I’ve been quietly plotting, running numbers and scenarios in my head, and dreaming about what comes next. What I have in mind is audacious, and it’s going to take a year of intense execution to get it done. But oh my goodness, if I can do it — game changer. My birthday (yesterday) was actually pretty crappy. Full of bickering and histrionic teenagers, back-to-back meetings and missed deadlines, a frantic half-hour of rage-gardening, and an escaped dog who was not at all remorseful when finally caught. There wasn’t even cake or ice cream. But you know what? I have a million things going for me and every day doesn’t have to be joyful — not even my birthday. And today, the house is sparkling clean, I look cute, the puppy is napping at my feet, and I have 15 minutes to spare before my next meeting. Here’s to the long view, friends. I didn’t stop at one #GrainlineAugusta — here’s the next one! I loved the last one so much that I wore it once a week, so had to have another (and another coming up soon…). Based on how the last one rode up a bit in the front, I did a 1” FBA for this one and it really elevates the fit! The previous one was roomy enough in terms of circumference, but didn’t hang quite right — I need more fabric in front than the back to make garments fall well. So now the body is larger than before — scroll to the grumpy expression pic for how much it balloons out when caught in the wind! Pattern tweaks:  FBA, a chevron back yoke and stripes that line up all around the body. I also closed the box pleat for a short length below the yoke, because I like it that way.  A note of caution here — I wrote previously that size 0 fit me perfectly despite the recommended size being 6 or 8. Turns out, the long sleeves are drafted with more ease in the bicep. So while the body of this dress fits me well, the sleeves are a tad tight. I don't usually wear dresses, but I was gifted 2 metres of this beautiful fabric from #likesewamazing and with the really scorching weather I decided to make this #grainlineaugusta. The Augusta isn't a popular pattern, I don't know why, but I love it! I like how the asymmetrical collar looks with the bold print. The construction of the collar and the sleeve cuffs are really interesting and if you follow the instructions well they aren't difficult and turn out very tidy. I’m very pleased with my newly made Grainline Studio Augusta! I’ve passed over Grainline patterns in the past, because their loose and boxy aesthetic is not my style, but a couple of their more recent patterns (Augusta and Felix) have really resonated with me. In the Augusta, I like how the visual structure provided by the lapels  elevates the looser silhouette. I sized down considerably — instead of the 6 or 8 recommended for my size, I looked up the finished measurements and calculated that size 0 would fit me fine, and it did. Overall, the pattern was easy to cut and sew — or at least, it *should* have been — but more on that later.  I bought the fabric in one of those handicrafts markets that spring up inside the GIGANTIC central hall inside Bangkok’s government complex. (Yes, it’s pretty cool to be able to shop for fabrics while getting your passport stamped. Takes some of the pain out of that tedious process.) This particular one is a handloom, a muted red with random dark pinstripes, and indistinguishable RS to WS. So I designated one side as the RS while cutting, and stupidly chose the other as the RS while sewing. This wouldn’t have mattered, except that the neckline is asymmetric, and I ended up with horribly torquing lapels, before I recalled that a notch had mysteriously not lined up with its counterpart, and so figured out my mistake. Then I had to take apart and redo the whole front (shedding tears, shredding fabric). Worth it, though for the final results! I had less fabric than recommended, so made 3/4 sleeves, with split cuffs. And on Threads magazine, I found a really cool technique for French seams that end above vents, so that’s what I used for the sleeves and body (scroll for pic).  TLDR: I really like the result, and since finishing this in Nov 2021, I have made more Augustas! In fact, I’ve been doing a bunch of sewing, but been too lazy to take photos. Went to the seaside today. Was so preoccupied with the beach and swimming that I completely forgot to snap my outfit until my return. I much prefer wearing this out and about than shorts. The great thing about wearing a dress to the beach is that it makes changing into a swimming costume on the beach easier and with less potential for accidental flashing! How many pullover shirts do I need. I made a modified #GrainlineAugusta by @GrainlineStudio . The pattern goes up to a 49 inch (124.4 cm) waist. I traced out the front of the Augusta, lined my own self-drafted shirt pattern along the neck+shoulder point, and then traced out a new front pattern. I also modified the back neck to match the Augusta so I could use the collar and lapel. My shoulders are generally too wide for shirt patterns (they admittedly aren't usually drafted for men) so modifying this way let's me use fun collars while keeping a fit that I like. This shirt is made from a cotton and linen blend that was gifted a few months ago for a previous advertisement with @WeAreTheFabricStore I've shared these pants a couple times. They are a simple #SelfDrafted drawstring waist pant, with a quilt patch for knee pads. I used a heavyweight linen in the color "Ochre", purchased from #TheFabricStore but the quilt patches are made from leftover linen scraps from previous gifts. I know that, as a sewer (or sewist?) I can just make pants that are the correct length, but I like the visual bulk of cuffs on wide-legged pants. Probably the same reason why I make a lot of long-sleeved shirts just to roll them up.

I haven't had any sewjo for weeks and weeks and was unable to pull myself out of this slump. But over the last few days, I've caught myself daydreaming about these fabrics made up into these patterns. They're not anything that I've put in a list, or in my queue of "have to" projects, or part of my "wardrobe overhaul" or anything intentional like that. They're just where my mind wanders when I daydream about a hobby I love and miss. All this to say, sometimes we get in our own damn way. I have finished a statement silk shirt thanks to being given some precious sewing time by fab husband. I was wondering if there would be time as time is short but the couple of hours he gave gave me the oomph to get on with it. This is the Augusta shirt with an asymmetrical lapel. The silk is from @newcrafthouse and is a jacquard that feels fabulous, is a print from a designers collection so is very special.
