Aaaand my third and last half term project is complete! Well, it still needs the lining slip stitching to the zip but I will call it done... So during this loooong term I planned and cut out a little capsule wardrobe of a Liberty #GilbertTop & a pair of navy hacked #soicigarettepants (swipe for the trousers, plus blouse and trousers are on the grid). The last item is a @grainlinestudio #reedskirt #grainlinereed I was inspired by @fabric_scraps beautiful winter versions of the Reed. The fabric is a very heavy rust cotton corduroy from @rainbowfabrickilburn - it shed like mad and my sewing machine was not happy with up to 4 layers of the stuff, but it is a lovely fabric and at £9 a bargain. I didn't have quite enough so pieced the cb panels, I figured with the number of seams it wouldn't show too much. I fully lined it and bias bound the waistband facing to stitch in the ditch and reduce bulk (swipe for pic of neat guts). Paired with @snagtights this will get a lot of wear! I like the 70s vibe of the skirt and Gilbert top, and those pockets in the Reed are just ace. I sewed a sz16 as per my measurements and the fit is good. With a less bulky and/or unlined fabric I might go down to a 14 at least in the waist; this version sits an inch below my waist. Lastly I added a label from @craftivists , 'use head, heart and hands' ... could not resist a bit of Pestalozzi.

Spent the day going to quilt shops with my sister. Fun day and good to get out of the house but I am totally exhausted now...off to bed soon. I am pretty excited about this purchase.... Especially to come home and find it is a perfect match to my linen Tropicana shirt. The teal blue fabric.... Is a Robert Kaufman Sevenberry Japanese Paisley homespun.. similar to canvas but not as stiff. This will either become a long #reedskirt or #imanskirt The Ivory plaid is a Japanese taupe homespun. This will become a cropped #ddfougere or #pesmittenjacket ... or maybe a vest?

Finished my @grainlinestudio #reedskirt this morning. Made from all my old worn-out jeans. I adjusted the pattern to add the length extension into the pattern pieces, and then I used the line of the front pockets to determine the patchwork. Some #memade fit picks from Spring Break. Yesterday I turned 41 and went with my middle child to see Frozen the musical. I wore my #reedskirt and #saturdayskirtset top. Before that we made a quick family trip to DC. The first day was cold 🥶 and I didn’t get a pic of my zadie jumpsuit/ fieldchores sweater combo. One thing I’ve really loved about leaning into vintage style is how it breathes new life into some older pieces in my wardrobe.   I’ve been decidedly “meh” about this skirt since I made it a couple of years ago—something about the fabric + length read “90s evangelical” to me, which is very much *not* my jam.   But paired with this striped Patina Blouse and my favorite hat, it gives a general feeling of “Agatha Christie on an archeological dig.” It’s not my most period-accurate outfit (best I can tell, bottom front A-line skirts like this were a ‘70s thing). Another fit of just wearing my makes and not pressuring myself to produce new stuff. Wore my other updated #reedskirt (see reel) with a #camdensweater that’s like 10 years old and a #douglascardi that was a pandemic knit. The #douglascardigan was part of my pandemic knitting revival. This hat is a basic beanie that I made from an elaborate beret that I frogged. Turns out I don’t really wear berets. Right after these pics, I used my trash tongs to fill a bag. It’s the urban equivalent to mowing the lawn 🤣 but way weirder. #Memademay2023 Day 2. This is actually not something I would have worn if not for Me Made May. I tend to think that a lot of the things I have made are not good enough and I wear them a couple of times and then put them away. So it is for this #reedskirt by @grainlinestudio. I made it out of a very large pair of men's jeans that I thrifted and then cut carefully to eke out the panels in the skirt. You can see that I have taken off the back pockets and used the back panels of the jeans to make the front outside panels of the skirt - so you can see the fading around the erstwhile pockets. It's actually kinda a neat garment although I don't love the fit! Also wearing my recently finished #littlesomethingtee by @minimiknitdesign. This is my second #reedskirt I sized down and gained a little weight so probably between sizes now as this is a little too tight and riding up. 🤦🏼‍♀️ Both sizes I had to rip out the waistband and open up the seam allowances for get the body of skirt to match waist. 🍁Rhinebeck Weekend🍁 I was so lucky to be able to attend Rhinebeck this year and to be able to go with my mom and my friend and just geek out about yarn for two days. We started at #indieuntangled2023 and #woolandfolk2023 on Friday and then #nysheepandwool on Saturday. Friday's Outfits: I gifted my mom my old #poetriapullover because I never felt the color suited me. She wore it layered with a tank top, a tunic, a vest, a balaclava, fingerless mitts, and a jacket and was somehow STILL COLD. I am wearing my #eclairraglan in @explorerknits Timber. I was in Ali's booth and totally parasocially chickened out from saying "hi" and showing her my sweater. My friend is wearing her amazing test knit #darkacademiasweater in @murkydepthsdyes and she got so many compliments. Saturday's Outfits: Mom and I wore our matching #saltyairtee s. Hers is knit in a discontinued bamboo merino yarn from deep stash (and again worn under so many layers you can barely see it). Mine is knit in @sewrellayarn Surf City in their silk fingering base which is so stinking soft. I haven’t sewn clothes in a lllooonnnggg time. I need a tan/khaki colored bottom for concert attire. I prefer a skirt and had no luck finding one in the correct color. Finding khaki pants proved to be equally frustrating. Mail order is hit or miss and pretty pricey if you have a lot of misses . Nothing in my size, slim fit, $$$$. Almost forgot to post this. Yesterday between work and kid pickup #1, I did an awkward photo shoot at City Hall. This is my new #saturdayskirtset top in @mindthemaker viscose crepe from @stonemountainfabric I’m wearing it with my #reedskirt that I think needs some fusible interfacing worked in because the fabric is too light and bunches a bit. I love the silhouettes of both the #saturdayskirtset pieces and I don’t have many blouse type shirts. After sewing pants and a vest with welt pockets, this was a breezy make. I have been wanting to make the #reedskirt (Max waist 49”, max hip 59”) by @grainlinestudio for ages but waited until I could get my hands on the paper pattern, which I bought from @riversidefabrics. This is my wearable toile, which I made from a large corduroy dress I bought for $6 at Value Village! I did some strategic cutting and if you look really closely you can see that there are some extra seams but it is very satisfying to make use of almost all the fabric! Last pic is of the waste that’s left over. I had to do a bunch of fitting… even though my measurements indicated that I should make size 14, I ended up increasing the SA on most of the princess seams and taking it in at the side waist. However, I kept the waistband at size 14… so I am a bit confused as to why/how it all fit together. I was wondering while I made it whether it was worth all the extra time, when I normally just make a regular a-line skirt … but it really is! This skirt is VERY comfortable. I love the pockets, too. I think the next one I try will be without the buttons because that is yet another step. I am looking forward to making many more Reed skirts in the future! One last photo of a detail from my @grainline #grainlinereedskirt. I really love how these pockets came out. The way they are constructed makes them fun to sew, too, and the end result is really satisfying. I often omit pockets on the things I make, but on this garment the pockets are a central design feature. Oh and I fixed the waistband. Running some elastic through it cinched it down and now it sits where it belongs. This also stopped the fabric from clinging to my hips and thighs. I got this sweet little floral cord @stonemountainfabric. Finished putting buttons on this @grainlinestudio Reed skirt just before leaving for the airport. Flying out to visit my daughter in Washington state plus a couple of days at the sewing convention in Puyallup. #needabiggersuitcase Cotton corduroy from fabric.com. Buttons from @blackbirdfabrics. Size 2 waist blended out to size 10 hip for the curvy girl I grew in my womb. #clothesthatfit

Working on a @grainlinestudio Reed skirt this week. Blue cotton corduroy. I split the self fabric pocket bag, added 1/2” seam allowances, and used a scrap of multicolored cotton for the pocket facings. Adds a bit of fun to the pocket and reduces bulk at the hip when using a thick fabric like corduroy. Swipe for photo peek at pocket. #grainlinereed
