He’s now impatient inside the garage all dry and calling “321 smile!” He’s about to sprint out and grab the recycling bags you see behind me (oooh the glamour) and he isn’t entirely chuffed at being my photographer today. MeMadeMay photos aren’t our strongest suit but…I made him a dressing gown…so he owes me. Meanwhile my wise little black cat stays indoors sitting on my fabric and looking better on it than I do in it. Back to business. Two memades in action today: #thayerjacket by @grainlinestudio sewn in hi-lo corduroy from @fabricgodmother with cosy cotton shearling lining from @minervadotcom . I’m getting SO much wear from this make. The jacket deets are a short stroll down my grid with close ups of buttons and all that yummy stuff. #vogue9090 skirt made from 1.8m of faux suede knit from @minervadotcom This skirt has a lined yoke in place of a waistband, pleats to front and back rather than gathers 👌🏻 pockets and an invisible zip at CB. I cut pockets from lining fabric so they’re nice and slippy against the suede. I didn’t hem the skirt, just cut a clean raw edge with the rotary cutter as I would if it was a genuine hide. No hemming…does it get any better? The Thayer jacket has been on my to do list since @endless_seams posted her stunner back in July 2021. I bought the same fabric in October 2022 and the pattern in May 2023. I mean, no point rushing things 😂 I took the project to the recent @brisbanespoolettes Sewaway but didn’t finish it. Too much chatting, eating and drinking I think! Anyway it’s now all finished and I love it. We just need the weather to cool down a bit more here in Brisbane. I added a facing to the lining as I didn’t want to see lining when I have the top button open. I also made a detachable Sherpa collar that fastens with three buttons on the collar stand and triangles of lining fabric at the collar points. A full Sherpa lining would be far too warm for our climate. Finished my #grainlinestudio #thayerjacket in a dry oilskin from #merchantandmills lined with a Robert Kaufman mammoth flannel, and I love it! Sleeves are lined with a viscose satin which I quilted. I really enjoyed sewing parts of this with the @sewvirtual Wednesday morning team which @sewlikedotty hosts. El año pasado compré un paño de lana negro a precio de ganga en Julián López. La idea era hacerme una chaqueta corta pues ya tenía un abrigo negro. La chaqueta ha estado todo un año en mi armario hasta que por fin le he podido hacer unos ojales con mi nueva máquina de coser. Me gusta mucho como queda esta chaqueta de corte A . De forro le puse una tela preacolchada también de @julianlopeztelas . Quizás la única pega es que no puedo ponérmela con un jersey muy gordo debajo porque me aprieta los brazos. Pero creo que es ideal para nuestro clima ya que pasando enero el frío es mucho más llevadero y podré llevarla con algo más fino debajo. Very pleased with how my first ever home made jacket has turned out. Pattern by @grainlinestudio #thayerjacket made in a wool plaid and lined in a “teddy bear” fabric from #craftswomanfabrics #cwfabrics. Added a phone pocket on the inside. Was relatively straightforward except for the buttonholes when the sewing machine wasn’t cooperating. We had the most glorious morning @tyntesfieldnt today. The fresh air and beauty was just what we all needed after a busy week and at times the sun even shone for us as well! I was extra chuffed to give my new #thayerjacket a road test too. This one was a bit of a labour of love and a test of my resolve to take my projects more slowly! I wanted a lumberjack/trucker style jacket and the #thayerjacket from @grainlinestudio was the closest I could find to what I imagined. I lengthened and slimmed the body and sleeves, added cuffs and extended the collar a little and I’m so happy with the outcome. It’s a great pattern, with really helpful instructions… bagging it out through the neck then attaching the collar last was a revelation! The fabric was my birthday present fabric from @theknittingandstitchingshows and I love it, despite the pattern matching challenge it posed! The outer is a fabulous checked wool and the lining is a teddy fleece on the bodice and polyester lining for the sleeves. I interlined the whole thing with wool and it’s super cosy now. Made from vintage linen that was only 35 inches wide. The detail of all the pockets and topstitching is hard to see with this print. #memademay2024 / #okaymemademay day 5 True Sewing Confessions: When sewing collared shirts, I can almost never catch all of the inner collar stand when top-stitching the outer collar stand. Never! So all of my me-made collared shirts have some hand-sewn elements because, to me, life is too short to unpick and redo perfectly reasonable topstitching to enclose the collar stand. Just hand-sew that shit! Hand-sewing the collar stand used to make me feel like a mediocre sewist, but the more I do it, the more I appreciate that it allows me to give a neater finish to the inside of the garment. Now I take pride in it. Today I’m wearing one of the aforementioned collared shirts: another @elbe_textiles Cornell shirt in rumpled linen with @annaallenclothing Helene Jeans, and because it’s chilly today, I’m layering it with my @grainlinestudio Thayer Jacket and a @jared_flood Skiff hat.

May I present to you a random head-to-ankles sun-squinty handmade ‘fit from today’s faux-springtime walk between errands: #rokuhat, #orthogonalshawl, #thayerjacket, #helenejeans, and matching #bfbestiebag made from the same @blackbirdfabrics denim as the jeans. I just finished this Thayer Jacket by @grainlinestudio in hi-lo corduroy I bought @fabricgodmother at last year’s open day. Rare for me to show up at a fabric shop having done advance fabric research, with pattern and yardage decided. Rarer still for me to stick to my plan and follow through within 4 full moons. Go me! I knew the finished jacket would have a chunkier vibe than anything else I own as its cotton sherpa lining brings thickness and snuggly warmth in chilly winds. The corduroy is all cotton, pliable with a silky nap, I’m very happy with the quality. The furry sherpa lining is cotton too - natural fibres for the win! I lined the sleeves with a good viscose Bemberg making the jacket easy to shrug on and off. To get technical, I went up two sizes for this make to accommodate the sherpa fur. Given that I wanted room for a cosy jumper beneath, to button it easily, to keep its A-line shape and to avoid looking like a stuffed cushion, I feel 2 sizes up was a good call. The shoulder fit of this jacket doesn’t seem generous compared to its hipline and nothing irks more than a coat that pulls at the upper chest or across the back when you want to stride in nature, swinging your arms. Other things: I faced the inside of my patch pockets with the sherpa but chose not to have it show on the outside. I made no sizing mods but faffed for ages about the length, then went with it as drafted and it’s turned out fine. Future dos/don’ts: I’d interface the under collar too, leave sleeves a touch longer, do some jazzy topstitching, smile more. The lining instructions are excellent, everything meets where it should and turns out beautifully, making you feel like a jolly good sewist. Love all the detail in the #thayerjacket from @grainlinestudio. It was so much fun to make and I actually enjoyed all the topstitching. I added a hanging loop and inner pocket to make my life easier.

My first real coat! I’ve made a couple light jackets before but nothing out of thicker coat material or lined because I’ve been working myself up about it unnecessarily. This is the Thayer jacket from Grainline, my first time using one of their patterns. The construction was easy to follow and I really like the details of this pattern, many of which are obscured by my fabric choice 🙃 but I wanted to use what I had on hand and I thrifted both these fabrics and they went so well together, not to mention having just the right amount of vintage buttons that coordinated! Not totally sure about the fabric content of the plaid, it’s definitely got some wool but I suspect it’s a blend. I made a straight size 10 even though my hip measurement put me at a 12 and made zero mods, the fit is really good and I bought this pattern specifically because it didn’t have a dropped shoulder and because it was lined. My only issues are from my own choices- I lined the sleeves with the corduroy which I knew was a questionable choice but I only have access to a Joanns and they didn’t have any quilted sleeve lining material and I needed to get started because I’ll be making Isaac a coat next and I want it to get done while it’s still cold. I’m also likely going to unpick and redo the collar and cut all the pieces out of the corduroy because the wool is a bit too floppy even for the under collar and I want the inner collar to all be soft. I’d love to try this pattern again out of a crisper material that will show off all the good topstitching details.

Realised I haven’t shared my finally finished @grainlinestudio Thayer jacket! This was a @guthrieghani kit from a few months ago. The cotton twill is beautifully soft and because of the weave is semi water resistant. I made a size bigger so I could interline the jacket (I used brushed cotton) - plus I can do it up over chunky jumpers. Added a cotton faux shearling collar which came as an option with the kit. I’ll add this as my first tag of #sewyourcolours22 as this warm burgundy and cream collar as very much in my autumnal palette. Last night I finished my Thayer jacket and to say I am proud of it would be an understatement! I think it is my favourite ever make. It is made from British Millerain water repellent fabric and lined with Robert Kaufman Mammoth Junior Summer Organic Cotton Flannel Fabric. So the #thayerjacket is coming along, there’s mistakes- not going to lie. The lining on one side did not want to play ball! And there is one other error which I’m keeping quiet about as I don’t think anyone will ever notice. @mrsjmclancy and I are working on our coats together, she has the blue colour way. Realised I haven’t shared my finally finished @grainlinestudio Thayer jacket! This was a @guthrieghani kit from a few months ago. The cotton twill is beautifully soft and because of the weave is semi water resistant. I made a size bigger so I could interline the jacket (I used brushed cotton) - plus I can do it up over chunky jumpers. Added a cotton faux shearling collar which came as an option with the kit. I’ll add this as my first tag of #sewyourcolours22 as this warm burgundy and cream collar as very much in my autumnal palette. Off for an orthopaedic consultant appointment about my stupid knee this morning - has been exceptionally painful for a month so may need surgery once again! #thayerjacket #grainlinestudiothayerjacket #bathsews #sewover40 #chronicallysewn
