It’s not quite the right weather for this jacket on the coast of California, but that is no excuse not to pull it out for a quick pic, because it is quite literally the coziest thing I own. This jacket was a lengthened version of the Tamarack that I lined with a sherpa fabric. I had previously used this Mind the Maker quilted fabric for a standard length Tamarack, but the shoulders got pretty sun bleached. The trick with this warm version was to interline it in some places and hide the seams in others. Like the armscye seam is finished with bias binding but the cuff seams are completely concealed. I also added a ribbing collar and cuffs for a nod to bombers but I sort of just eyeballed the placement of the ribbing so I can’t say it’s 100% symmetrical 🤫 I’m very careful with this one to only wear it when the sun goes down because no way do I want to risk too much sun on it. I love the feel and look and I’m doing everything I can to extend its life. #grainlinetamarack #indiesewingpatterns

This Tamarack from @remivailstudio immediately caught my eye when it popped up in our feed. Created for the #AurifilArtisan wearable challenge, Tamara made a whole cloth quilt from @fableism Sprout wovens and @artgalleryfabrics Foraged Garland Three, then long arm quilted the entire thing with an allover bird pattern from @sewshabbyquilting using @aurifil thread and finally cut and made the jacket. What really stood out to me was the detail at the binding, using a gingham really makes the lines of the jacket pop. Not only did Tamara hand stitch the binding down, she then went over it with a larger visible stitch that really finishes off the binding beautifully. Make sure you check out her feed for more beautiful detail photos and images of her other quilts! #Grainline Studio #GrainlineTamarack #TamarackJacket

Today we’re throwing it back to this amazing Tamarack by @pansenfrickifriday! I’ve been perusing my pulled Tamarack inspiration photos and every time I see this photo I just can’t look away! She used all secondhand materials to create this gorgeous jacket. If you can believe it, that amazing print is an old bed linen! I've never had sheets that cool. #GrainlineTamarack #TamarackJacket #GrainlineStudio

Stitchmas 14 - the quilted tamarack coat ! One of my favorite projects of the year FOR SURE. I’ve made two quilted jackets prior, but both were out of old bedding quilts, thicker, stiffer, maybe just less nice material? I had to learn how to fit it better and wanted to make one from a quilt I made! I spent so much time making these half square triangles 😵💫 and just kept telling myself to be patient. All the HSTs were made from leftover stash fabric (mostly Brussels and Essex). Using good quality batting and fabric really made a difference in the comfort of the jacket. Learn from me! 😂 OH and she’s reversible!!! I liked the fit of the #tamarackjacket by @grainlinestudio so went with that pattern! Then added some snaps for closures. I love her 💕 #quiltedjacket #grainlinetamarack #grainlinestudio #quiltcoat #handmade #sewing #sewistsofinstagram

🎃 Happy 🦇 Halloween 👻 We saw this SP🎃🎃KY Tamarack by @jewlzjrks pop up in our feed and knew it was our Halloween post for 2024. The pumpkin! The cute ghosts!! The bats!!! THE SPIDER WEB QUILTING YA'LL!!! 🕷️🕸️ Here's what Julia had to say about her jacket and head over to her feed for even more pics!! “Magic is really very simple, all you’ve got to do is want something and then let yourself have it!” -Aggie Cromwell🧙♀️ Sewing is magic✨ And this is by far the coolest thing I’ve ever made with this magic🎃🦇👻 My love for Halloween is deep and so is my love for sewing. This jacket was a huge challenge with techniques I’ve never done before, but that made it so much more rewarding, especially now looking at the final product. I’m very grateful to be working with such inspiring and supportive women - they helped me believe in my abilities to create this jacket and have kept my creativity flowing🪡 Happy (almost) Halloween!🖤 Jacket Pattern: Tamarack Jacket by grainlinestudio FPP Patterns: Ghost & Bat by quiltypie ; Jack-O-Lantern by threadbarecreations Fabric & Support: warmancozyquilts #GrainlineStudio #GrainlineTamarack #TamarackJacket #QuiltedJacket

I made a Liberty Tamarack! It’s a @notionfabric shop sample, and also an example for the @grainlinestudio #tamarackjacket class I’m currently teaching there. (But eventually it will come home to me 😎) I made size 14 from the plus size range—my current measurements match the size chart exactly. The plus version has a bust dart that’s been rotated to the shoulder; otherwise the design and construction look to be the same as for the straight size jacket. These were my first welt pockets, and they came out well(t)! I opted to hand stitch the pocket bags down on the inside of the coat because I didn’t want them flopping around. I thought a lot about the inner seam finishes and made a little sampler auditioning six different options, but I didn’t take any pics to show what I ended up doing! Going to try to make a reel about it… The fabrics I used are @libertyfabrics Tana Lawn, the Summer Blooms print in coral, and @figofabrics Tactile in lavender stripe for the lining. I used Warm and Natural cotton batting, and Dritz heavy duty snaps, the kind you use the snap setter tool to attach. #libertyfabric #libertyoflondon #grainlinepatterns #grainlinetamarack #vermontsews #sewistsofinstagram #handmadewardrobe #quiltedjacket #thanksimadeit #sgmade24

I may have taken 6 years of French in school but that didn't help me read the caption on this fun Tamarack Jacket by @ladysewing.ca. Thankfully Google Translate came to the rescue and I can share that Sophie used an amazing AND reversible pre-quilted fabric from @minervadotcom to create her version of our most popular jacket. Using pre-quilted fabric is a great option if you're feeling overwhelmed by the prospect of quilting your own – especially when the print is as awesome as this! #GrainlineStudio #GrainlineTamarack #TamarackJacket

Me made May, day 3,412 lol. Okay not really, but as always with MMM, the daily selfies are starting to get to me. But also as always with MMM, I loooove seeing all your makes, so I carry on with the hopes you enjoy seeing mine too! Anyhoo, today I’m wearing another @matchymatchysewingclub Skipper, this time in dress length, made with fabric from @lyricalfabrics. Topping the dress is a @grainlinestudio Tamarack Jacket, sewn in vintage pre-quilted fabric I found on Etsy. Both the dress and jacket were made while I taught the patterns in virtual workshops. Scarf was knitted by me, and is the Sophie Scarf from @petiteknit made up in @kelbournewoolens dreamy yarn. My bag is vintage. I finished my @grainlinestudio Tamarack Jacket! I want to say "finally!" but the actual sewing didn't take a super long time. It just feels like "finally" because I have been wanting to make a Tamarack for literal years, so the pattern has been living in the back of my mind for a long time! My version centers on a quilt block that I made on a crafting weekend with my pals pretty much exactly a year ago. I taught them how to do foundation paper piecing using this sweet fox block from @3rdstoryworkshop, which is exactly the same block that I sewed in an FPP workshop with Andrea at @patchhalifax. 🦊💖 The background fabric is a Kona cotton that I had leftover I think from my elephant quilt? I ended up having to buy more once I decided to make the block into this jacket, but luckily Kona cottons are readily available where I live so I could colour match in person. 👌🏻 I love how the pink and the colours of the fox go together! I got the lining locally, and I have no idea what it is, but it really couldn't have matched any better. I used scraps of the fox fabrics in my binding, which I am super happy with as well. I tried to place them randomly and have them vary in lengths and order, and I think I was successful. And it's ready just in time for spring! I debated a lot on sizing and whether to prewash the fabrics, the quilted layers, or nothing. My friends very sensibly advised me to prewash the fabrics before quilting and then cut the pattern pieces out of that to compromise on the shrinkage. I fully planned to do that except then I just... Straight up forgot. 😅 So I didn't prewash anything, had low-key stress that it wouldn't fit throughout the entire project, and then lucked out that it fit. I quilted the layers in two big chunks and cut my pattern pieces out of that, going with the size recommended for my body measurements. Also I originally intended the quilting lines to run vertically but then decided I didn't like that, and pivoted before I quilted the section with the fox block in it. I did 1" spacing for the lines and used my walking foot. Very happy with how this turned out, but also very happy to not do any quilting for the next while!

My English paper pieced @grainlinestudio #tamarackjacket is finally finished! It is another entry to #magamnovelnovember as it is my first time making the much loved pattern, and it is such a novelty that I have finally finished it!!! Thank you so much to @sewing_in_spain @suestoney and @finishedseams for hosting. I first started the project in March 2020 when we were living in Beijing and I needed something to keep my fingers and mind busy as we were in the midst of COVID-19, and I really appreciated the concentration needed to cut out and glue, and then hand sew the the pieces together in the + shapes. By May that year I finished piecing and quilting the back and then I put it down until February 2022. By then we had moved to Guangzhou in China, and whilst in the middle of a COVID related 2 week lock in in our apartment compound I finished piecing and sewing all the pieces and created binding from one of my husband's dress shirts. I didn't pick it up for the two years we lived in KL in Malaysia as it was just too hot to sew, let alone wear. The changing weather here in Mexico, especially the cold temperatures in our house, prompted me to complete it. I think it is too big, and the wadding is too thick, and I'm not sure yet whether I will add fastenings, but it is finally finished 😂 This was a complete #refashion as it was made from #upcycledclothing and fabric scraps from other projects in a mix of cotton and linen and some denim. I would like to make a smaller and more pliable version which hopefully won't take me 4.5 years to finish! #grainlinetamarack #quilting #quiltersofinstagram #machinequilting #grainlinestudio #tamarackjacket #handsewing #epp #eppplusquilt #slowsewing #slowfashion #patchworkjacket #patchworkquilting #patchwork #wearableart #sewover50 #upcycledclothing #upcycle #tamaracktogether #sewover50november24 #so50jackets #so50sustainablesewing

New project: These two fabrics are beautiful early purchases and are set to cooperate to become a quilted Chanel-type jacket. I made one a couple of years ago and wear it often. This new one should also fit well into my wardrobe. The fabrics are @atelierbrunette and @merchantandmills cottons paired with with wool/cotton batting. This project is part of my promise made post Spring NYC trip to @moodfabrics, to sew ONLY with fabrics I own. No buying more. Surprisingly, I’m finding this both freeing and inspiring. Ive been following @judithrosalind with interest as she tracks the number of wears her clothes get. I have worn the earlier version of this #grainlinetamarack many times. It’s light, short and elegant—perfect with my #closetcoreonyx slim pants for a celebration but just as great with a t-shirt and jeans. I basted the three layers together and then did irregular line quilting suggested by the grid of the fabric. Next up putting it together with binding. I’m hoping it will be reversible. 🤞 I’ll be back here soon with the next developments. I’d like to wear it this month. 😍#sewover50 #sewover50october #grainlinetamarack #quiltedjacket #sewoverageism

Lately, it seems like most of the Tamaracks I've seen have been pieced. While that's always beautiful, I still love the simplicity of a solid Tamarack with unique quilting – and that's exactly what @luceclairemakes did here. Inspired by The Green Knight, Lucy used an abstract fingerprint motif to quilt her jacket. It's one of the coolest and most creative quilting ideas I've seen! #GrainlineStudio #GrainlineTamarack #TamarackJacket

Tamarack Season is upon us, and we're obsessing over all the print and patterned jackets popping up in our feed. This Tamarack from @sew_can_sew is a perfect blend of geometric and abstract designs, with a tight color story that will brighten any cool, gray day. Susan used the @wellspringdesigns_co Adobo quilt pattern to piece the jacket and added the hood from our Tamarack Add-On. To top it all off, she finished the piece with some beautiful hand quilting! #GrainlineStudio #GrainlineTamarack #TamarackJacket

Hi people, This is my first Tamarack Jacket by Grainline Studio. It definitely won’t be the last. I’ve been aware of this pattern ever since it first came out and finally bought it. I can see now why it’s stood the test of time. It’s beautifully drafted, goes together well and lends itself to all sorts of ideas and variations while remaining a simple quilted jacket. This is my very inexpert trial run with stash stretch poly jacquard (daft idea!) leftover lining, leftover thin batting. I kept this as straight forward as possible using patch pockets, serged insides, big straight line grid quilting with my walking foot. Even so it was quite a bit of work. A quilting refresher course! 😄 I lengthened the front a bit to minimise the high-low hem and I went a size too big not knowing if quilting would significantly shrink the pieces. I ended up trimming it down a size and it’s still roomy but I don’t mind that. I used cotton tape to stabilise the neckline before the binding went on. I have a stash busting version in pieced fabrics for spring in mind. There is all sorts of inspiration under the hashtag. This pattern is a good one. 🌻🌻 🌻🌻🌻#tamarackjacket #grainlinestudio #grainlinetamarack #sewinginsydney #iwearwhatisew #isewmyownclothes #wintersewing #jacketsewing #quiltedjacket 🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻

#memademay Day 12. I’ve been having trouble posting everyday. With so much worrisome stuff going on in the world, what I’m wearing seems embarrassingly irrelevant. But today I was at the garden store buying geraniums and I felt so easy and comfortable in my #grainlinetamarack that I wanted to document it. It’s the power of sewing—when it goes right, it can make you feel easier in the world. This jacket is already on the grid, made last year from beautiful, light @atelierbrunette and @merchantandmills fabric. The end of this quilted jacket is in sight! Making the #grainlinetamarack that I started via a class at #moderndomesticpdx with @soar_on_the_wind. The flower and bee squares are from an #arteastquiltingco quilt along that I still haven’t finished, but figured I’d use some of the squares and redo them later. Quilting the pieced layers together now and then can finally sew the jacket itself! Bonus shots of the view from my sewing room of an awesome rainbow this morning and Tataille (the cat) in his bed under my sewing table and getting his perpetual neglect.

This fabric is so special it needs its very own post! If you are familiar with the Indian Block prints we often carry here at Stonemountain and Daughter, this fabric may look familiar. But this is an extra-special block-printed cotton lawn because it is also pieced!🤯 That's right: this fabric is made up of several printed cottons that have been expertly sewn together in a ring pattern, exactly like you would do for a quilt top. We are blown away at the craftsmanship that went into this fabric: from the beautiful designs, to the block printing of the fabric, to the piecing. Swipe to take a peak at the back of the fabric! We can imagine so many special projects you could make with this fabric! You only need 1 3/4 yards to create a square lap quilt - perfect for practicing your quilting and binding. You could also go all-out on a quilted jacket - the #GrainlineTamarack from @GrainlineStudio has great instructions on quilting fabric for their jacket. We could also see some really interesting home dec projects - wall hanging? throw pillow? Let us know in the comments what you would make out of this amazing fabric! This colorful Tamarack from @sewknitgen is sure to brighten up a grey winter day. Reversible #grainlinetamarack is finished! It’s made from @atelierbrunette and @merchantandmills fabric which were waiting on my shelves for several years before inspiration hit. The outside is a bit dressed up and the inside is a casual denim jacket. The quilting pattern was suggested by my friend @jen.manuell It’s a size 6 shortened by several inches. It’s bound with the solid navy fabric — 1 1/2 inch strips were cut between the magenta stripes so it’s not on the bias but worked out fine. The seams are flat-felled by machine except for the sleeves which I sewed by hand. The binding is sewn by hand. When you wear it on the plain side the rivets are backwards but I like the look. This is my second version of this shortened jacket. The black one lined with the alphabet appears several times on my grid because I wear it so much. It’s a style which fits my life. I hope to get as much wear out of this one. #sewover50october24 #sewover50 #quiltedjacket #sewingwhatiloveonme #usingupmystash #usingupwhatihave

Another glowing review of the Tamarack Jacket pattern, this time from @susanbrubakerknapp. Susan used an old, damaged quilt to create her Tamarack Jacket and I love both how she gave this quilt a new life, but also how it's almost, but not quite, symmetrical. It really keeps me looking at the original piecework and handmade beauty of the quilt it came from. Here's what Susan had to say about working with our pattern. "I used the Tamarack Jacket pattern by Grainline Studio grainlinestudio and it was terrific. Very clear and well-written. (The designer also has a series of wonderfully instructive videos that walk you through every step. Highly recommend.) This is a great pattern if you are someone who does not do much garment construction (or any). I have limited experience (my mom’s instruction; she was a home economics teacher before I was born), and making a bunch of Halloween costumes for my kids when they were little. I made this jacket in one (long) day in my studio." #GrainlineStudio #GrainlineTamarack #TamarackJacket

Olivia @oliannepatch figured out the one problem with the Tamarack Jacket, unlike a quilt, when you wear it it's harder to admire your beautiful work! On the plus side, you do get to wear it out of the house for others to admire. Always a tradeoff, but I'd take it for this beautiful, bright Tamarack! #GrainlineStudio #GrainlineTamarack #TamarackJacket https://grainlinestudio.com/collections/tamarack

I Found a quilted throw at a resale shop for $7.00 that I thought would be perfect for making the Tamarack Jacket by @grainlinestudio. I really debated which side of the throw to make the outside, the floral or striped side. I finally decided to put the floral design on the outside. I unpicked all of the binding around the throw to reuse for binding the outside edges and all the inside seams. Fortunately I had plenty of binding for the entire jacket. I have not sewn clothing for many years so this is my first project moving back into sewing my own clothes again. I am thrilled with how this turned out. I did decide not to put pockets on since I didn’t have matching fabric for doing the welt Pockets. I did make two pockets out of the quilted fabric but felt they looked too bulky on the jacket. I plan on making another jacket but with making my own quilted fabric with a light batting. I’ll be ready when the weather turns cool in fall for wearing my jacket! #sewoverageism #sewover50 #sewingcommunity #memadeeveryday #iwearwhatisew #sewover50june24 #tamarackjacket #grainlinestudio #grainlinetamarack
