May has whizzed part us and even though I have barely posted any photos in the last ten days or so (the record breaking heat took away all photo posing motivation), I have been wearing more or less the same clothes that I posted earlier, and then this! This is the #willowtank a pattern by @grainlinestudio and I have two people to thank for helping me make this One is Stacey of @thecrookedhem who has a great series of photos and notes in her stories talking about how she went about to fit this on her. I have long wanted to fit a basic top on me (The Trapeze in the earlier posts was a move in that direction but I needed something even simpler.) Reading Stacey's posts I remember I already had this pattern and immediately set to work. The second sewist is Nancy of the @iusedtobeacurtain fame. Nancy is a whiz at converting any fabric with a prehistory into a brand new piece of garment. Of course there is plenty of fabric in my stash but I knew that I wanted to use an old linen shirt to try my hand at what Nancy does so well. Details: This is a size 10 with a couple of modifications. Because this is going to be a piece that I will turn to again and again, I plan to put them in my story highlights for my reference (plus of course anyone else who is interested). The main visual difference that you will see between the #willowtankdress and this is the curved hem. I wanted to be able to use an already curved and sewn hemline so that is exactly what I have done here. The other addition in the little bit of visible mending that you see at the back. I accidentally cut into the shirt fabric when piecing the shirt’s front to make a back, and so I ended up repairing it with a bright red thread to make it stand out. And that's it. I love how loose fitting the shirt is, and how *perfect* it is for this horrible weather. This is a #grainlinewillowtank made some years ago in a white linen. I don't wear white anymore, it just drains my colour somehow as I've got older so I dyed it and then realised the thread must have had some polyester in it because it stayed white. I decided to have a go at disguising the seam lines with some embroidery and this is the result. It totally works as a comfy breezy set in the heat, but I was rushing when I made the shorts so the waistband stitching is pretty janky. I would never wear something tucked into it that would show the waistband. Oh well, some projects you really take your time perfecting the little details, and some projects look like they were hot glued together by kindergartners. #memademay2024 day 17 was fully me-made and very wrinkly since we’re out of town and living from a suitcase. I loved wearing this fit!! Rewearing my #danishorts that I made earlier this month, plus a matching tank that I made to go with it! This is, surprise surprise, another modified #willowtank (my most made pattern of all time). For this one I cropped it and drafted a square neckline, which I bias bound just like the scoop neck. It was really straightforward! I used the selvedge edge as the hem, but now I wish I had cropped the top shorter because I think it would be cuter to wear untucked. I might got back and add a little pintuck near the hem so it sits shorter but I still keep the raw hem detail. The jacket is the #cambriaduster from @fridaypatterncompany in a lush tencel twill with bias bound inside seams that I’m really proud of. I haven’t worn it in years, mainly because the sleeves are wider than I want for a fabric this drapey, it doesn’t really make sense unless they’re rolled up but they don’t stay rolled for very long so I find it annoying to wear. #memademay2024 day 8, strawberry picking edition 🍓 Today I wore my rainbow linen #willowtank from @grainlinestudio that I made this time last year and must have worn two dozen times since then. It’s a size 6, cropped by 2”. One of my absolute favorites. Also wearing #landerpants with the zipper fly and jeans pocket expansion that you can find on the @truebias blog. Although I love the fit of these, the denim I used is too lightweight for these to really feel like jeans. They’re jeans-looking pants if that makes sense. Which is great for the already muggy Tennessee climate, but I really want to make a sturdier pair. PS. What a fun sewing retreat that was at the George Washington Hotel! I met so many new friends. One was sewing doll clothes, so adorable! One made a cool jacket out of 3 pieces of boiled wool, a different sewist modeled it! My tablemate made a bowl out of rope encased in a colorful tubular ribbon mesh! I made this little dress ages ago at the Brisbane Spoolettes Sewaway and have worn it heaps. Not sure why it’s taken me so long to post it. It’s yet another hack of the Grainline Willow Tank, this time with an a A line skirt. The linen is very lightweight so I lined the bodice in cotton . I also added a ruffle where the bodice meets the skirt to cover up the fact that they don’t quite fit together. My measurements must have been off ( too much talking while working or maybe too much 🍷or both ! ). Finished off with a couple of labels from @kylieandthemachine . Sometimes a small change is enough. I had a Saltmarsh skirt that wasn't getting the wear it deserves and then after seeing a few on MMM this year I realized I needed to shorten it slightly. Ta da. Wine for breakfast - well it 11am , so almost lunch time and on a wine tasting trip, so it must be ok . On the hottest day of the year so far, I’ve chosen to wear my Grainline Willow Tank Dress. I wasn’t sure about mixing up the stripes when I made it during the first week of lockdown but I don’t notice them when I’m wearing the dress and it’s been perfectly cool. I chose to expose the bias binding on the neckline and hide it on the sleeves. I quite fancy making another in plain linen but we don’t really get enough hot days to warrant the expense 🌞 (maybe for next summer!)
