This is a hacked Austin view A that I made super long ago in February 2024 but never got around to photographing or posting. I basically omitted all the buttons. Lowered the neckline, raised the side seams, bias bound the neckline and armholes and added pockets. Nice A line silhouette there. Level 52 unlocked! Today is my birthday and I made myself a new dress for the occasion. 🎉 This is the Austin Dress from @grainlinestudio and it’s been on my list for a while. I love, love the button plackets down the sides and the slightly cut in shape of shoulders. 💙. . . . My fabric is a navy and white gingham linen that I got from @wearethefabricstore a couple of years ago. It is such beautiful fabric! I used a fat eighth of Liberty lawn for my bindings. I love a special, hidden touch! I opted to cut the skirt pieces and the front bodice on the fold so that I would have to do less pattern matching. I moved the button closure to the back and made a little fabric loop to finish it off. I saw this fabric at the Knitting and Stitching show last year, and immediately knew I wanted to make a dress from it, but I wasn’t sure what until I saw the @grainlinestudio #austindress pattern a few weeks later. They just felt right together, and I’m glad the final product turned out as well as I imagined in my head ✨ I made a straight size 8 based on my bust and waist measurements. The only changes I made from the pattern were to cut the back and skirt pieces on the fold to avoid unnecessary pattern matching. This was a really fun make which came together pretty quickly! And a great way to get over a fear of buttonholes as it has 16 🫠 thanks to various people at a @shropshiresews social I even managed to borrow many colours of thread to make the buttonholes coordinated with the fabric 🎨

I tried to thoroughly document this because honestly I've really grown to love this big chartreuse dress, and i also struggled to find that many makes of it online so I wanted to contribute mine. I wore it to work on Thursday and am wearing it today on my day off for wandering around town! Details: these amazing @dillbuttonsusa that I bought A WHOLE YEAR AGO when I originally planned this make. I had gone on a whole mini road trip with Bailey to procure buttons that would match this sort of hard to match color and was not disappointed. I bought the store's entire inventory of this style and don't have a single extra. I also found the perfect tiny button in the button table of @fabricplacebasement for the neckline closure! For fabric, I thiiink this is Essex Linen in Pickle? It's definitely essex linen but I'm not positive of the color. This is a size 14, blended to a 16 at the bust/shoulders. It's a bit of a time consuming pattern with all the top stitching, but very easy! Procrastinating on the 16 button holes and deciding on button choices 🤪. Anyway, it feels good to finally finish it. I love it, except the neck area. I find it very tight with the button closed, so I get rid of the button closure. Maybe I might do loose long ties. For now, I'll leave it as is until summer comes. I matched the pockets and also lined them with a fine Batiste fabric. Introducing my Juicy Fruit dress! 🩷🧡🩷 I have enjoyed wearing my first #AustinDress from @GrainLineStudio so much (it’s great alone or layered) and I was excited about making another one using this vivid linen gingham from @BlackBirdFabrics called Juicy Fruit. It has been in my stash a while, and it was perfect for this pattern. I made the same modifications to the pattern as I did for the first one (described in a post made in June) except this time I used even more buttons ~ 12 on each side for a total of 24 buttons (and buttonholes! 😅) I have found it nearly impossible to find nice buttons locally, and really wanted something special since it is a major feature of the dress. I found the perfect buttons in the @PigeonWishes.Shops in the United Kingdom (Isn’t Etsy great?!) These are the Bloom buttons 🌸🧡🌼 The packaging was so nice and included a lovely label which I added to the button placket (it says “Bloomin’ Lovely” on the other side). Swipe for close-ups! Do you ever change up the spacing of your buttons? First view B #austindress with the full works - 16 functional buttons on both side plackets, and one small one on the neckline. It’s a fairly involved make but I really like the midi length (not my usual dress length but it works), and a challenge matching the gingham print. I had to adjust the length because I wanted to end the dress on a full square so that it looks visually pleasing. Glad I took the effort to finish it! I’ll definitely make another view B in a solid and may consider adding buttonholes to the patch pockets so that the pocket bags don’t look so droopy. Have you ever sewn a garment with a kit? @NeedleSharpNY offered to send me one, so I was able to test one out for the first time. Thanks Mary! 🤗 What a decadent experience it was! My usual method: I have fabric. I search through patterns until I find one that works with the type and amount of fabric. I look through thread to find closest match. Start sewing, realize I need interfacing and cobble some pieces together. Continue sewing, realize I need buttons (or a zipper or elastic, etc) Carry out another search. If unlucky, a trip to the store or on-line order might be necessary. 😅 Sewing with a kit ~ open box, sew dress. 🙃😊 Every single thing I needed was there, coordinating and in the right amounts. There was even a needle and a label! Very cool. 😎 (Swipe to see box and contents) My favorite candy was even in there! How did Mary know I love Smarties?! 🥰 I chose the #GrainlineAustin dress from @GrainlineStudio and this lovely window pane check linen. There was enough fabric for View B (with a gathered skirt) and to allow for pattern matching. I really enjoyed this pattern and have some fabrics in my stash that would also like to be an #AustinDress 😉☺️ I love the cut in shoulders and the buttons running the entire length of both sides is such a cute detail! Modifications: I cut the bodice on the fold, leaving off the keyhole opening in front and scooping out the neckline a bit (high necklines choke me! 😋) Instead of binding the neckline and armholes, I lined the bodice. I matched the pockets and also lined them with a fine Batiste fabric. I made this #GrainlineAustin dress in June and it quickly became one of my favorites! I'd seen a few other people alter the pattern to remove the keyhole opening, so I tried that out and loved it. The skirt is also slightly fuller, as I used the full width of a 36-inch wide vintage fabric for each panel. I've already made a second Austin and I'm planning more! I'm also wearing a Virgo harness from @leathercoven. Have you ever sewn a garment with a kit? @NeedleSharpNY offered to send me one, so I was able to test one out for the first time. Thanks Mary! 🤗 What a decadent experience it was! My usual method: I have fabric. I search through patterns until I find one that works with the type and amount of fabric. I look through thread to find closest match. Start sewing, realize I need interfacing and cobble some pieces together. Continue sewing, realize I need buttons (or a zipper or elastic, etc) Carry out another search. If unlucky, a trip to the store or on-line order might be necessary. 😅 Sewing with a kit ~ open box, sew dress. 🙃😊 Every single thing I needed was there, coordinating and in the right amounts. There was even a needle and a label! Very cool. 😎 (Swipe to see box and contents) My favorite candy was even in there! How did Mary know I love Smarties?! 🥰 I chose the #GrainlineAustin dress from @GrainlineStudio and this lovely window pane check linen. There was enough fabric for View B (with a gathered skirt) and to allow for pattern matching. I really enjoyed this pattern and have some fabrics in my stash that would also like to be an #AustinDress 😉☺️ I love the cut in shoulders and the buttons running the entire length of both sides is such a cute detail! Modifications: I cut the bodice on the fold, leaving off the keyhole opening in front and scooping out the neckline a bit (high necklines choke me! 😋) Instead of binding the neckline and armholes, I lined the bodice. Introducing my Juicy Fruit dress! 🩷🧡🩷 I have enjoyed wearing my first #AustinDress from @GrainLineStudio so much (it’s great alone or layered) and I was excited about making another one using this vivid linen gingham from @BlackBirdFabrics called Juicy Fruit. It has been in my stash a while, and it was perfect for this pattern. I made the same modifications to the pattern as I did for the first one (described in a post made in June) except this time I used even more buttons ~ 12 on each side for a total of 24 buttons (and buttonholes! 😅) I have found it nearly impossible to find nice buttons locally, and really wanted something special since it is a major feature of the dress. I found the perfect buttons in the @PigeonWishes.Shops in the United Kingdom (Isn’t Etsy great?!) These are the Bloom buttons 🌸🧡🌼 The packaging was so nice and included a lovely label which I added to the button placket (it says “Bloomin’ Lovely” on the other side). Swipe for close-ups! Do you ever change up the spacing of your buttons? When deciding on fabric layout, you don't always need to follow the plans included with the pattern. Here ⁠@alexjudgesews went against the grain, literally, and cut part of her Austin on the cross grain to great effect. I love how it really makes the pockets and gathering at the waistline stand out. I made this ages ago and only just got around to taking photos. But here it is! It's a @grainlinestudio #GrainlineAustin dress, which I loved as soon as it was released. It's the gathered skirt version, which I made using a yarn-dyed linen/cotton blend (I think?) from @patchhalifax. I got the wooden buttons from @fabricville, and I love the combo. The button placket down each side is so cute, and I would definitely make this pattern again. The only thing is that I think I would go down one or two sizes. It was a bit big for my preference when I first made it, and I have become a bit smaller after not being able to eat solid food during recovery from oral surgery a few months ago, which has exaggerated the issue. I will totally wear this as is, but want to try a smaller size. I can't easily take this in because of the button plackets where side seams normally would be, so it'll just be a thing I keep in mind for future versions! Level 52 unlocked! Today is my birthday and I made myself a new dress for the occasion. 🎉 This is the Austin Dress from @grainlinestudio and it’s been on my list for a while. I love, love the button plackets down the sides and the slightly cut in shape of shoulders. 💙. . . . My fabric is a navy and white gingham linen that I got from @wearethefabricstore a couple of years ago. It is such beautiful fabric! I used a fat eighth of Liberty lawn for my bindings. I love a special, hidden touch! I opted to cut the skirt pieces and the front bodice on the fold so that I would have to do less pattern matching. I moved the button closure to the back and made a little fabric loop to finish it off.
