I went on a vacation and wore something handmade every day! I’ve been sewing clothes and (slowly) building a hand-made wardrobe for around 6 years now, and I’m so proud of this achievement! Yes, I’m still here! Busy with the garden etc. but I did have time to finish 2 new garments. The fabric is a Kaufman batik called “Leaf” and was destined to become this 4th iteration of the @GrainlineStudio #AlderShirtDress view B ever since last September when I bought 5 yards on our way home from vacation. I also had enough for a @WardrobeByMePatterns #WBMTropicalShirt for Thom and there’s still more than 1/2 a yard left. Not bad for it only being 44” wide. Batiks are nearly the only non-solid colour fabrics I like to wear. Before I cut this out, I attempted to fit the new larger D-cup size range available for this pattern but it was hopeless. I thought it might be better than all the fit changes I had made to the original B-cup but couldn’t make it work. Among other anomalies the bust dart was enormous! I should not have messed with the near-perfection I already had. All I needed was a small amount of extra width in the bodice from the underarm down so I can wear this dress more comfortably over a tee but still be able to wear it on its own. Mission accomplished! Besides fitting my narrow sloping shoulders, other mods I’ve already made are adding inseam pockets, moving the bust dart down, shortening the bodice a little and lengthening the skirt several inches. All totally worth the trouble. What I especially love about this shirt dress is the flat front combined with the gathered skirt. It’s not something I’ve seen elsewhere. And the collar with stand fits me really well. Thom’s Tropical Shirt is the 5th one I’ve made for him and there’s another cut out and ready to sew. He prefers a short-sleeved cotton or linen shirt for summer instead of a t-shirt. The only fit change I made was to remove the waist curve to straighten the side seams. This one has 7 buttons instead of the pattern’s 5 because I had 7 perfect buttons and didn’t want any leftovers! somehow instagram posted this without the caption so adding it back in 🙃 @rubystarsociety launched their applications for their 2025 maker program today. i’ve wanted to apply in the past but was always too intimidated. today i sent in an application! i have grown so much as a bag maker and quilter in the past few years and i will never know if i don’t try! that also got me thinking about when i first fell in love with RSS fabrics. this Voyage quilt was the second quilt I ever finished, with a Rise FQ bundle and the blue floral Rise sateen backing. the quilt cemented Quilt Night with Suzanne and was near the start of a fun crafty friendship and partnership that i am so grateful for. the Sandhill Sling was one of the first few bags I learned to make, again with RSS canvas. the bold RSS colours and patterns bring so much joy and light to what i make. i recently bought a 10 years of magic panel and am deciding whether it should go into a quilt or some pouches and bags. thanks to everyone for your support as this tiny little side hustle/business/passion project slowly gets its wings. My third iteration of this super versatile pattern!! I sewed up my first version of the @grainlinestudio Alder Shirtdress as one of the @minervadotcom Exclusive kits, and found it to be such an enjoyable sew! I’ve now made three versions, all with viscose, and every time I wear it I’m stuck by what a wearable pattern it is, perfect for both formal and informal settings depending how it’s styled🤩🤩 This particular fabric was included in my brilliant Minerva goody bag from the Minerva 25 year birthday party in Manchester!! I had 2m, and luckily it’s nice and wide so I was able to squeeze out this pattern (with a little bit a clever cutting and adding a seam here and there!!) 😉😉 This is the Minerva Exclusive Schooner Shore design and I love it!!! It’s a medium scale print, with this lovely whimsical seascape design. I particularly love that it’s a navy background rather than black, which suits me much better because I’m a summer skin tone. I cheated with the front closure on this one and just sewed it shut along the button placket! Then I could just sew the buttons flat on top. A while ago I bought an @creativelive class teaching the Palmer-Pletsch tissue-fitting method. I was kind new to sewing clothes and the whole thing freaked me out and felt very confusing. So I left it for at least three years. But buying the Alder shirtdress pattern and fabric I didn’t want to ruin pushed me to try again. And it was easier. I’ve had this viscose in my stash for literal years, fully knowing that I wanted to recreate a Urban Outfitter shirt dress that fell apart with my constant use 🤪 finally this year I made it! I used the Alder Shirtdress pattern by @grainlinestudio and a viscose from @fabricgodmother. I made the smallest size, no modifications except I incorporated the double button feature from the RTW garment (swipe for closeup). Here’s maybe the oldest make in my closet. In probably 2016, I really wanted to get back into sewing clothing and sewing my own wardrobe. I started this #aldershirtdress then got pregnant with my daughter and took around a 2-3 year break. When I finally did finish it, I wasn’t even sure it fit my style anymore and so it hasn’t gotten a lot of wear. I was so proud of the work I’d done, but sadly it hung in my closet for years. So now, 9 years (!!!) later, I’m still not sure it fits my style, but I still love the design and am happy I kept it around. I love the gathers on the sides and the flat front which is what drew me to the pattern in the beginning. Maybe if I make another one, I’d lengthen the hem a little and use a more casual fabric like a linen or chambray to fit into whatever my style is now. #memademay #memademay2025 #grainlinestudio #memadeeverday

I never remember the before…this is one of the shirts I saved after my dad died, intending to upcycle it for myself or my niece. I used the front and back bodice of the #aldershirtdress pattern to reconfigure the shoulders and neckline. I used fabric from the sleeves to make bias binding for the bench and armcyces. Finally, I made a toile of the #grainlinestudio #aldershirtdress. Size 12 graded to 14 at the hips. Fabric is a thrifted sheet, 100% cotton, from #valuevillage in Burien. The cotton is really nice, but such a tight weave that the needle made large holes on the underside. Experimented with different needle sizes & settled on a size 80. Pins refused to pin so used clips. Vintage La Mode buttons ("choice of smart women") from a seller on FB Marketplace. #wearabletoile for sure! Already have another Alder cut out of seersucker ready to sew. I love this shirtdress!

Last night temperature dropped below zero for the first time this season. The days are getting shorter and darker and I realized I hadn’t shown some things I made over the summer! 👕This is the #alderdress bodice made into a little tie front shirt folowing @grainlinestudio ‘s blog post. It was actually intended to be a wearable toile for a dress I was planning, but it will have to wait for next summer because there weren’t enough months in this one. I made size 2 and had to do some adjustment on the darts and pocket positions. I am quite proud of this one (did you see those neatly finished armholes?!) although I don’t know if I’ll be brave enough to wear it often, due to it being cropped. With these shorts I think it works, though! 🩳 They were the first version of the #mndawn , which were too high-waisted for my taste, and gave me a bit of a wedgie problem (as pictured here), which is why I didn’t bother finishing the seams. Kujira & Star waves set 💙🌊💙 I'm super thrilled with this one. I used the @grainlinestudio Alder shirtdress pattern and did the tie-front shirt hack ✂️ from their blog--Google "lexi tie front alder" and you should find it. Because the pattern has a lot of waist ease, I graded down two sizes (4 to 0) below the bust dart so that the shirt would close snugly at the waist when tied. For the finish, I decided to draft a facing for the ties + hem, close its raw edge behind the plackets, and then slipstitch it in place. I had MAYBE a yard left, and the width of the fabric minus SA can just squeeze comfortably around my butt, so I used the @iam_patterns Victoria as the base for a skirt to complete the outfit. I would have preferred a puffier silhouette for a tennis-style look, but there was nowhere near enough fabric for that! Speaking of the fabric, it's a beautiful one from @cottonandsteel . I actually got it secondhand, but I think it's a cotton/linen blend, billed as a canvas but with a hand more like medium weight linen after washing. I adored the characters on the selvedge 🐳 so decided to use them as the garment "tags". The inner yoke/waistband and button band are made in linen scraps from my stash, which also helped me squeeze these pieces out of the main fabric. While I personally love the look of a crisp button up collar, the look isn’t for everyone. With that in mind today I’m sharing two tutorials we’ve made to alter the neckline of the Alder. These can also be applied to the Archer, or any other shirt with a button up stand collar.⁠ ⁠ First you can simply leave the collar off to create a more casual stand collar. This variation requires no pattern alterations, simply don’t cut the upper & under collar pattern pieces and sew the collarstands together along the upper edge without the collar pieces sandwiched between.⁠ ⁠ Second is an easy tutorial to create a V-neck. This is a great option if, like me, you’re not into having fabric around your neck. A lot of you are asking if there's a way to add the Archer sleeves onto the Alder and the short answer is yes but not right out of the package. The reasoning behind this is that sleeved and sleeveless garments are drafted differently, not to mention the fact that not all sleeves fit all armholes.⁠ ⁠ I've created tutorials on two ways to make your Archer sleeves work with the Alder. The first method is much easier and involves blending the upper bodice of the Archer with the Alder. This is a great option if you don't want to fiddle around with armscye adjustments.⁠ ⁠ If you're looking to really dig in there with your pattern the second tutorial shows you what adjustments you'll need to make the Archer sleeve fit into the Alder armhole. Its definitely more involved, will require some fitting on your part, and I would absolutely recommend making a muslin. But is is doable? I’ve had this Indian khadi cloth that I got from @maiwahandprints for years and finally figured out what to make with it! It’s handspun and handwoven cotton with a black warp and white weft and is quite lightweight and semi-sheer and only about 42” wide. I was inspired by a photo of a gauze tunic and realised that the #AlderShirtdress from @GrainlineStudio would be quite similar with a few tweaks. I’ve made this dress twice before so most of the work was already done: remove the collar, raise the waist, lower the bust darts, lengthen the skirt and (most important) add inseam pockets! I even had exactly the right number of buttons and some coordinating striped bias tape already cut out. I did have to piece the back though because it wouldn’t fit on the narrow width. It’s so quick to repeat a garment and I barely glanced at the instructions. My name tag went on the outside of the back yoke. Just for fun. I’m wearing my new dress with my graphite linen cropped #GlebePants which I’m also every pleased about. This is also my third pair and thanks to the wonderful pattern from @MunaAndBroad they fit perfectly with no adjustments whatsoever - except cropping 5.5” off the legs. Fun fact: I originally measured a size iii, the smallest, but Leila went down a few more sizes and now I’m a size C! I made this dress a couple of months ago to wear to this London wedding and after finishing it I put it in my packing pile and never got proper pics until yesterday! This is the @grainlinestudio Alder Shirt dress! I followed Jen's v neck tutorial from the Grainline blog, which I've done before and absolutely love. I also added the max length I could for the 3 meters of fabric I had which turned out to be about 8" and this long length takes this dress to fancy! This is my 5th Alder in some variation and just a great dress pattern with so many variations it's a go to for me now when I've got some special fabric, like this perfect @libertyfabrics Shane picked out for me. #memademay2023 day 31 We made it! 😅 In honor of the last day of MMM I am *finally* wearing this gorgeous @grainlinestudio #aldershirtdress I made last month and somehow (ridiculously!) have not worn yet until today. It’s made in the best Japanese poppies linen from @stonemountainfabric that brings me so much joy to look at. I made a size 14 in the gathered skirt view, lengthened the skirt by 8 inches, made a band collar instead of the full collar, and omitted the chest pockets to let the poppies design shine. I am in love with how the curvy shirtdress hem looks at this midi length. Today I’m wearing this beauty with a RTW cardigan and @svenclogs. 🖤💛 Thanks for coming along on this MMM journey with me! My third iteration of this super versatile pattern!! I sewed up my first version of the @grainlinestudio Alder Shirtdress as one of the @minervadotcom Exclusive kits, and found it to be such an enjoyable sew! I’ve now made three versions, all with viscose, and every time I wear it I’m stuck by what a wearable pattern it is, perfect for both formal and informal settings depending how it’s styled🤩🤩 This particular fabric was included in my brilliant Minerva goody bag from the Minerva 25 year birthday party in Manchester!! I had 2m, and luckily it’s nice and wide so I was able to squeeze out this pattern (with a little bit a clever cutting and adding a seam here and there!!) 😉😉 This is the Minerva Exclusive Schooner Shore design and I love it!!! It’s a medium scale print, with this lovely whimsical seascape design. I particularly love that it’s a navy background rather than black, which suits me much better because I’m a summer skin tone. I cheated with the front closure on this one and just sewed it shut along the button placket! Then I could just sew the buttons flat on top. Ever since sewing up the @minervadotcom exclusive sewing kit of the @grainlinestudio Alder, I’ve been desperate to make another!! I LOVE IT!! 🤩🤩 I had a good sized chunk of this pretty Fragrant Fields viscose challis leftover from a previous project, and view B of this pattern actually uses a surprisingly small amount of fabric, even at the largest sizes. The only thing I had to do was cut the yoke and back bodice pieces with a centre back seam instead of on the fold, which I think you hardly notice unless you’re looking for it. TOP TIP: To maximise your fabric scraps, try adding in a seam instead of cutting on the fold. I’ve had this viscose in my stash for literal years, fully knowing that I wanted to recreate a Urban Outfitter shirt dress that fell apart with my constant use 🤪 finally this year I made it! I used the Alder Shirtdress pattern by @grainlinestudio and a viscose from @fabricgodmother. I made the smallest size, no modifications except I incorporated the double button feature from the RTW garment (swipe for closeup). A lot of you are asking if there's a way to add the Archer sleeves onto the Alder and the short answer is yes but not right out of the package. The reasoning behind this is that sleeved and sleeveless garments are drafted differently, not to mention the fact that not all sleeves fit all armholes.⁠ ⁠ I've created tutorials on two ways to make your Archer sleeves work with the Alder. The first method is much easier and involves blending the upper bodice of the Archer with the Alder. This is a great option if you don't want to fiddle around with armscye adjustments.⁠ ⁠ If you're looking to really dig in there with your pattern the second tutorial shows you what adjustments you'll need to make the Archer sleeve fit into the Alder armhole. Its definitely more involved, will require some fitting on your part, and I would absolutely recommend making a muslin. But is is doable? I made this dress a couple of months ago to wear to this London wedding and after finishing it I put it in my packing pile and never got proper pics until yesterday! This is the @grainlinestudio Alder Shirt dress! I followed Jen's v neck tutorial from the Grainline blog, which I've done before and absolutely love. I also added the max length I could for the 3 meters of fabric I had which turned out to be about 8" and this long length takes this dress to fancy! This is my 5th Alder in some variation and just a great dress pattern with so many variations it's a go to for me now when I've got some special fabric, like this perfect @libertyfabrics Shane picked out for me. While I personally love the look of a crisp button up collar, the look isn’t for everyone. With that in mind today I’m sharing two tutorials we’ve made to alter the neckline of the Alder. These can also be applied to the Archer, or any other shirt with a button up stand collar.⁠ ⁠ First you can simply leave the collar off to create a more casual stand collar. This variation requires no pattern alterations, simply don’t cut the upper & under collar pattern pieces and sew the collarstands together along the upper edge without the collar pieces sandwiched between.⁠ ⁠ Second is an easy tutorial to create a V-neck. This is a great option if, like me, you’re not into having fabric around your neck. #memademay2023 day 31 We made it! 😅 In honor of the last day of MMM I am *finally* wearing this gorgeous @grainlinestudio #aldershirtdress I made last month and somehow (ridiculously!) have not worn yet until today. It’s made in the best Japanese poppies linen from @stonemountainfabric that brings me so much joy to look at. I made a size 14 in the gathered skirt view, lengthened the skirt by 8 inches, made a band collar instead of the full collar, and omitted the chest pockets to let the poppies design shine. I am in love with how the curvy shirtdress hem looks at this midi length. Today I’m wearing this beauty with a RTW cardigan and @svenclogs. 🖤💛 Thanks for coming along on this MMM journey with me! I was hoping to sew multiple dresses this summer but after moving and having some issues with my very old vintage sewing machine, I haven't done as much sewing as I'd planned. So this is my entry for the #sunsoutsundresseson contest by @fluidplusdrape @pdxsewingstudio And others! The dress is a combination of the @grainline alder dress and Archer button down. I followed the tutorial from the Grainline website and it was a breeze! The fabric is a really lightweight rayon twill from @thefrenchseam.  I think this dress would look cute with a belt but I have yet to find mine since moving. Maybe I'll make a matching tie for it instead.  I'm also still  figuring out good photo spots in the new backyard. Two dresses, one old and one new, for a fifth grade graduation! 🎓 I made a dress for Hannah using a pre-shirred panel from Joanns. It was easy to sew it to size, and then I used some of the excess fabric length to make little ruffled caps sleeves like she requested. I think Hannah looked beautiful! I first picked out this Alder shirtdress to wear to graduation because it matched the coloring of Hannah's dress, but I realized it also had a special meaning. I wore it today for the last day of elementary school, but I was also wearing it in 2015 on Nathan's first day of elementary school (Hannah was crying as he got on the bus) Two bookends to my elementary school parenting career!

I love a shirt dress for how versatile they can be, and I thought it would be helpful to share my latest @grainlinestudio Alder Shirtdress styled in three different ways. First the casual summer dress. I’ve styled this with simple white pumps for a comfy day look that is perfect for shopping, picnics, and hanging out with the kids. Canvas pumps in navy or pink would also be cute. Second, the smart casual summer work wear. I’ve added a relaxed fit blazer here in this gorgeous rich blue colour, with the same simple white pumps. This would be perfect for school, the office, and adding as an extra layer for those chilly evenings. Picking out the bright blue of this gorgeous dress helps make this outfit cohesive and you could easily add some jewellery to elevate it a bit more if that’s your style. A pinned back hair style adds practicality and formality. Finally I’ve added blue heels for a summer wedding guest vibe. This would be perfect for a hot August day, with the dress collar and cute button details adding that hint of smart wear. An elegant necklace or a chunky bracelet would add interest, as would a little clutch bag and some bright pink lipstick to finish the look. What do you think of my styles? Let’s look more closely at some of the details of the latest @minervadotcom Exclusive Sewing Kit - the Grainline Studio Alder Shirtdress in Minerva Exclusive Viscose Challis ‘Inky Grove’. I’ve not made a Grainline Studio pattern before, but I really liked this project. It’s got lots of nice details that I enjoyed taking my time to sew neatly (topstitching I’m looking at you!!) It’s an unlined pattern, but it does have a yoke section which adds a pretty detail & means you can use the burritto method if you wish. I french seamed wherever I could (I’m obsessed with french seams!!) 🤣🤣 The armhole facings are cut on the bias and then hidden to the inside the garment with only a sinlge row of neat topstitching visible, which gives a really professional finish that isn’t too tricky to sew. I LOVE the high low hem detail!! I think it looks incredibly elegant & adds a very modern touch that differentiates this pattern from other shirt dresses 🤩🤩 Both views have a full collar and collar stand, which you sew together before attaching at the neckline. I really like how this is finished off, but you have to be careful not to sew too far along the shirt edge. The breast pockets have a lovely topstitched V shape detail, and are suprisingly easy to sew on! TOP TIP: Use an edge stitching foot to get really even top stitching, and turn your machine speed right down if you can!!💡💡 Overall this is a very comfortable and infinitely wearable shirtdress that I think would be best suited to intermediate or advanced beginner sewist (mainly because it has a number of interesting details and viscose isn’t as easy to sew as cotton lawn). I really enjoyed making it, and I was suprised how much I loved the finished result. I’ve had this Indian khadi cloth that I got from @maiwahandprints for years and finally figured out what to make with it! It’s handspun and handwoven cotton with a black warp and white weft and is quite lightweight and semi-sheer and only about 42” wide. I was inspired by a photo of a gauze tunic and realised that the #AlderShirtdress from @GrainlineStudio would be quite similar with a few tweaks. I’ve made this dress twice before so most of the work was already done: remove the collar, raise the waist, lower the bust darts, lengthen the skirt and (most important) add inseam pockets! I even had exactly the right number of buttons and some coordinating striped bias tape already cut out. I did have to piece the back though because it wouldn’t fit on the narrow width. It’s so quick to repeat a garment and I barely glanced at the instructions. My name tag went on the outside of the back yoke. Just for fun. I’m wearing my new dress with my graphite linen cropped #GlebePants which I’m also every pleased about. This is also my third pair and thanks to the wonderful pattern from @MunaAndBroad they fit perfectly with no adjustments whatsoever - except cropping 5.5” off the legs. Fun fact: I originally measured a size iii, the smallest, but Leila went down a few more sizes and now I’m a size C!
