My niece turns 6 today! The pandemic plus living several states away means I’ve only seen my brother’s family once in the last two years, which really sucks tbh. Making things for them doesn’t really make up for not seeing them more often but it doesn’t stop me from trying anyway. I knit this cardigan to go with a dress I made for her. The construction of the sweater is rather ingenious, and it came out really nice. I was reminded that I’m not really a lace knitter though the result was definitely worth it. (There’s a version for adult sizes too. I could make one for me and be matchy matchy! I wanted to make a dress for my niece for her tenth birthday and she selected the #minisouthportdress by @truebias. We chose this soft cotton double gauze fabric from @fancytigercrafts that I cut right out of my old Wiksten shift dress (swipe to see). I liked my wiksten shift but wasn’t reaching for it much as I find that so much fabric on my body makes me hot. 🥵 So I was really happy to cut up my dress and refashion it into this new one. 🥰 My niece is wearing a size 10 and I had to unpick the armhole (including bias binding) to drop the armhole lower so it wasn’t riding up into her armpits. So simple and quick! I made a second #minisouthportdress from a gorgeous soft Japanese cotton from #stonemountainfabric I cut the waistband tunnel a bit short by accident but I think it's okay. The front skirt was cut as two pieces to save fabric and I think the mismatch is fun. The fabric is lovely inside and out, maybe I'll make myself something. 😀

For more info, read on ⬇️ Ten years ago I got a new sewing machine and one of the best things about it is the buttonholes (my old one, which I still have, only has manual settings for buttonholes and they always came out looking like garbage). I’ve always intended to do more sewing - for myself, for my kids, for my nieces - but too often I don’t get around to it. Now that I actually have more time and mental space for it, I’m resolved to change that (except for my kids, who have long grown out of wanting their mom to sew them stuff, which is perfectly fine). Also, after a 90min lesson with an expert at @theelectricneedle (really excellent local place!!) my serger is working for me and I no longer want to throw it into the creek. All that to say, I finally finished a project and I’m absolutely thrilled with how it turned out. I made a #MiniSouthportDress @truebias for my niece, who turns 6 soon, using very floral fabric my mom gave me last year. (Thank you @knitstatrn for recommending this pattern! It’s a good one.) I washed the fabric and cut these dresses out over a month ago, but then ended up sewing different projects. I realized the warm weather is coming to an end soon, so I finished them up this week! I’d forgotten how much time it takes to sew all the bias binding around the neck and arm holes, but they look so nicely finished on top. It’s been about 3 years since I made one of these, but I remember it ran smaller. I made a 10 for Miss H and a 4 (plenty of room for her to grow and still wear next summer) for Miss G.
