I have quickly discovered the only downside to having an industrial straight stitch is how long it takes me to finish the buttonhole on an otherwise finished pair of jeans. • I have been compiling a BUNCH of denim inspo on Pinterest and wanted to make a pair of jeans with a fun twist. For this pair, I started with the #helenejeans from @annaallenclothing. I made the wide leg version with a 30” inseam in a size 00 with -1/4” from the rise and -3/4” flat seat adjustment. • I changed things up with this pair by adding a front yoke and inseam pockets (borrowed from the #coeteouser). I also swapped the traditional patch pocket on the back for a welt pocket (borrowed from the #closetcoremitchell). I love how much these little details change the aesthetic of this pair of jeans and it was really satisfying to bring my Pinterest inspo to life. • The denim I used for this pair is a dark wash Japanese denim from @saltlakesewciety. 👋 It’s a new make for day 14 of #mmm25 I’m wearing the @megannielsenpatterns flint trousers in a lovely viscose crepe from @sewsewsewuk 🌺 I actually got this fabric to make the maxi version of the Shelby dress but I have decided to make the mini instead, which means I had spare fabric 🙌 I wasn’t planning to make these trousers ( I wasn’t even sure that I liked them 😂) but after wearing my flint shorts last week and realising how much I enjoyed wearing them, I thought I might as well try the trousers too 🌟 I made a size 4 but had to make a few adjustments too ( no surprises there! ) I’m pretty pleased with with the fit and I think these will be perfect for travelling in the summer ☀️ I’m also wearing an old @truebias Rio ringer T-shirt -I probably need to make some new ones soon as mine are all very well worn 😊 🧵 Thoughts 💭 - not entirely convinced these are for me but I know they will be super useful for wearing at the airport! Today was the celebration for my favorite fabric store: @harmonyprovo. I love visiting this place to see all the fabrics and treasures they have, but the people there are even better! Last night my niece and I made some floral cakes and I attempted some pansy flowers because Harmony’s logo is a pansy. It didn’t totally turn out but we kept going! 💐🤣 Then we headed down to the fashion show where my nieces and my sons helped me share some of my favorite “made with harmony” things I’ve made this year. Fresh off the machine! My bright yellow linen #saundraskirt is summer perfection! I bought this Cloud Linen a year or two ago from @matchymatchysewingclub and it was a bit less acid-highlighter and a bit more primary than I was expecting. It took me a while to decide what to sew, but I’m so glad I took the leap with this skirt from @hisydgraham 💛🌻🌼😎🐥🍋 I graded between sizes 24-26 and shortened the skirt by 3” to get the perfect long midi length (I’m 5’2”). I made the plain view and omitted the pockets to reduce bulk, and also skipped the French seams (even though that would be a beautiful finish) bc I was lazy and wanted a quick finish! The top is yet another #truebiasrio I finished last week in a md-weight rib knit. It ain’t broke, so I don’t fix it. Have worn this one several times already! Me Made May Day 4 My dad was an aerospace engineer at Lockheed and then Hughes Aircraft in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. Because of this, the space program played an oversized role in my childhood. Since my dad’s death, in 2020, I have become extremely sentimental about all things space related. I couldn’t pass up this (glow in the dark!) fabric at Joann’s from which I created this long sleeve #rioringer. When my dad asked me what possessions of his I would like to inherit, I didn’t have to think at all: “your slide rule.” I was fascinated watching him using it when I was a child, marveling at the elegant precision of its mahogany, glass, and steel components as he calculated lunar trajectories for the unmanned moon landings of the 1960’s. It was Peter’s birthday yesterday, so we took the kids up the airplane museum and wore all things quilted. When the attendant at the museum was checking us in, he miscounted the number in our party because in his words, “I don’t see individuals, I only see plaid.” 😂 I made my older son a quilt coat during the pandemic and whenever we wear them, my younger son says, “But where’s my quilt coat?” So I scoured my scraps and made him this miniature one for his birthday. For the boys, I used the free “Sleepy Time Robe” pattern from @mellysews. I shortened it and omitted the waist tie. They like them sometimes and I like mine all the time. But nothing beats matching your kids. 😊 My comfort suit is a modified version of the #unfoldingjacket and #pomonapants with a #remyraglan. Lars is wearing a #rioringer and #modernjoggers. And my husband was wearing a sage tee, so I think everyone was being nice to me and wearing their handmade clothes. 😊

#rioringerdress out for sunny kicks in stunning Alcobaça 🇵🇹 We had a few child-free hours appreciating its beauty with a pastel de nata 😋 This was my first @truebias Rio Ringer dress after making lots of Rio tees back in May. It’s made in textured cotton knit I bought from @sewcialstudio after missing out on stock from @sewmesunshine! I wear this dress so often and am caught between making another and not wanting to dilute the love of this one. I went up 2 sizes to get a loose fit to make sure it was comfy cool rather than the sleek 70s fit of the original design. I don’t like a close fit in the sun. 🥵 I was also worried this knit would grow a baggy bottom after sitting if I didn’t make it loose tbh! It does a tiny bit but no more than any other jersey would. I wish I’d bought more of this fabric…how often do we say that?! Another backlogged make now in all its grid glory! • I made this #heatherblazer from @fridaypatterncompany after scoring this gorgeous wool at the thrift store. A full 2 yards of 100% wool for $5! I had just enough to make my TNT blazer pattern, and this time I swapped the patch pockets for the welt pockets from the #closetcorejasika and added a back cinch to give it a touch more shaping at the waist. • For this pattern, I typically make an XS and raise the armscye by 3/4”. I shorten both the body and sleeves by 2”. I love the internal structure of sewing a blazer, a skill set that I have developed using the “Classic Tailoring Techniques” book and @juliabobbin as a resource. I think that padstitching and taping the roll line are an absolute must, plus I love how it helps me slow down and enjoy the process a bit more. • I didn’t add shoulder pads to this blazer and used a Deadstock viscose for the lining, so the total materials cost was less than $20. The topstitching festival has ended and my @ready_to_sew #partnerreadytosew overalls are finished!!! 🧵 I made these as a wearable toile, managing to just squeeze them out of one yard of 6.5 ounce Robert Kaufman denim. Lining fabric is @rubystarsociety @alexiamarcelleabegg #warpandweftfabric - both fabrics from my local fabric shop @fabrictownusa . 🧵 The dungarees hardware is the aged copper set from @kylieandthemachine. She makes the best dungarees hardware and the only that I could find with separate sliders for the straps. After trying ties and buttons on previous overalls, I’ll never go back. My shoulders are pretty uneven (which I never realized until I started sewing!!) and being able to adjust the straps makes the fit so much better. 🧵 Pattern notes: Made a size 39 but modified the pattern to make shorts. Cut the pocket/knee pads to pocket length. Didn’t have enough fabric to cut the front and back bibs on the fold so had to cut two pieces each and sew them up the middle. The bib pocket is my own design made from five scraps. I left off the drawstring and added 3/4 inch elastic to the back drawstring channel. 🧵 Topstitching notes: used Gütermann Mara 70 from Wawak for the first time based on @lovetosew.podcast recommendation. When I first made this pattern, the #kitepants, I was a bit disappointed because I thought the balloon shape would be more accentuated. But soon I realized that I reached for these all the time. And I made 2 other pairs. We all find our perfect pants pattern. I have tried 3 times to work on one of the #TNT of a lot of sewists: the free range slacks, but I have never been able to make them work on my body. These are pretty perfect for me without any modification, I just lengthened the legs: #sewtall

I guess it’s probably time for me to finally post this one. It’s been finished for a bit, but I wasn’t going to show it off until it had fulfilled its purpose, so to speak. The Road Case tee is an exercise in “being the merch you want to see in the world”. It’s actually a @truebias Rio in black cotton jersey and grey cotton rib from @naturesfabrics I have a photo saved somewhere (of course I do) of John Lodge from the Moodies tour of Australia in 1983, and tucked in the far back corner is one of his road cases, and I said to myself “HEY. Why has no one ever thought this would be fantastic merch?” …as I have discovered, it’s actually because even the band mistakes you for crew at a glance. 🙃 Regardless, if I ever decide to see Justin perform, I would 100% make a second one with ‘Hayward’ on the back, but for now, I’m good with this one. I’ll admit that it’s a little difficult for me to wear in public, partially because it still feels terminally uncool (you’ll always be cool to me though, fellas), partially because I think it’s all just so close to me and I’m such a private person and I hate anyone knowing I have an interest in anything. (It’s 100% easier for me to share myself with complete strangers because if you don’t like me, I don’t ever have to see you again.)

I went with my youngest to Zona Rosa, a part of Mexico City that we haven't been to before. We started off in the Mercado Insurgentes, one of the many artisan or craft markets in the city, and this one is especially known for silver. Zona Rosa began to be developed in the mid-19th century. By the beginning of the 20th century the area was filled with cafes, pastry shops, and a number of green areas designed to create a European atmosphere. For this reason the streets were named after European cities. The Mexican Revolution put an end to the building here and the initial mansions remained, but many were abandoned until the 1950s, when the area was repopulated and reinvigorated by artists and intellectuals From the 1990s, the area has also become home to Mexico City's gay community, which is prominent around Amberes Street and sponsors an annual pride parade on Paseo de la Reforma 🏳️‍🌈 (which was last weekend). Saturday is coffee day and today we went to @cafeschwalbennest (en.: the Swallow’s nest). I can’t remember a time when it hasn’t been one of Graz’s go-to coffee shops. It’s the perfect place to watch the world go b(u)y and in our case to listen to a ritualistic Saturday concert (slide to video and turn on sound): the siren goes off every Saturday at lunchtime mixed in with church bells, in this case the bells from the Franciscan church that is right beside the coffee shop. The last pic is one of many courtyards ready to be explored when in town. Today’s outfit is the #rioringertshirt and the #siennamakerjacket I wear both items often and love the colours. I’m also a bit of a sucker for bright blue, so when I saw these stripy trousers @nudiejeans I had to but them. I know, I could have easily made myself a pair but what can I say, I fell in love with them and that was that. 💙 Belt and bag are also me made in vegetable tanned leather and I’m looking forward to getting back into bag making as soon as I finished making some items of clothing that have been in my to-do list for a while now. #memademay2025 day 10! Fully handmade outfit today. I'm wearing a #rioringertshirt by @truebias, #mydreamcardigan by @woolandbeyond and hacked #philippapants by @annaallenclothing . I've also made the backpack, but it belongs to my boyfriend. Before I got into making clothes I made quite a few of these backpacks for myself, friends and family. It was always fun to think about new combinations and features, but the sewing itself required a lot of brute strength 😄 also, I really tortured my very basic sewing machine, but it kind of worked. You get more careful with more experience, I guess.

Fresh off the machine! My bright yellow linen #saundraskirt is summer perfection! I bought this Cloud Linen a year or two ago from @matchymatchysewingclub and it was a bit less acid-highlighter and a bit more primary than I was expecting. It took me a while to decide what to sew, but I’m so glad I took the leap with this skirt from @hisydgraham 💛🌻🌼😎🐥🍋 I graded between sizes 24-26 and shortened the skirt by 3” to get the perfect long midi length (I’m 5’2”). I made the plain view and omitted the pockets to reduce bulk, and also skipped the French seams (even though that would be a beautiful finish) bc I was lazy and wanted a quick finish! The top is yet another #truebiasrio I finished last week in a md-weight rib knit. It ain’t broke, so I don’t fix it. Have worn this one several times already! #memademay 4, it was finally cool enough to wear my jeans! This is my second pair of #coetrousers and they came out perfectly. I added an inch to the back rise and took 4 inches off the length. I used 11oz denim and toiled over a flat felled inseam that I had to sew through the leg hole. It was definitely worth it because the inseam is so smooth from the inside! I spent a few hours (ok, maybe many hours) working on some t shirts this weekend and have made two to varying degrees of success. This one is pretty good I think! A bit of rippling on the back of the shoulder seams but not at all bad for a third attempt at sewing with jersey. The pattern started as a #rioringertshirt but I changed the body fit, length and sleeve cuffs so I don’t know if it is representative of the pattern any more! I added another layer in the front bottom corners to hide a flaw in the fabric that I didn’t notice until after assembling the neck. I’m having a lot of fun learning new techniques and practicing! Also I love wearing things I’ve made 💗

I'm wearing this (again) today. 😍 Such a useful addition to my wardrobe! PYJAMESES. If you take one word from this post, let it be that one, my new coinage. Let’s see if it catches on. I haven’t given myself enough time to sew over the past few weeks (not enough to satisfy me at least), but I did make some things - I’ve just been slow to post. (I’m sure it’s not just me, but social media is feeling so draining these days.) Here are two of my recent makes, which create a wonderful comfortable outfit of natural blend fibres! They are secret pyjamas - or as I’ve taken to calling them recently, pyjameses (more formal pyjamas). Featuring the @petitestitchery Padget Pants. Pleated, elastic waist, designed for knit fabric - check check check on things I’m perpetually looking for. The fabric is a teal mini houndstooth brushed poly cotton knit from @galafabrics. Super soft with a bit of heft to it, making for a comfy and warm winter pant. I have to admit I was a bit skeptical about the design of the waistband, verbally expressing it in to myself in middle of making, like “you want me to what?” “are you sure?” and a skeptical hesitant “ohhkaayyy” but yes, trust the pattern! It worked out well. Since this pattern has a faux fly, I decided to add a faux button too, and I’m happy with that. I didn’t choose to do belt loops. I paired it with the sure win TNT @truebias Rio Ringer tee, in merino (with some polyester) from @oursocialfabric . This is my third Rio, and there will be more - love it so much. I lengthened the sleeves slightly, and brought it some of the ease at the bottom of the body. I’m very happy with how the outfit turned out! #sewing #sewingpants #padgetpants #rioringertshirt

I finally purchased the Riley Overalls from True Bias, not sure why it took me so long. I love to wear overalls, so this seems like a perfect match for my style. This pattern was so fun to sew, the instructions are so well written and easy to follow. I made a size 8, except at the waist I I set by to a 10. For the length I did add 2 inches and that easy just right. From the leftover fabric, which came from Joann Fabrics I made a pair for my youngest granddaughter. I used Kwik Sew 3145 and I sewed this little overalls in an afternoon. I realized after I took the photos, my entire outfit is from True Bias! I also purchased the hardware for my overalls at True Bias. I spent over a year eyeing this fabric, and I'm so glad to have finally bought and sewed it up! Choosing which colour to use for the contrast neck and arm bands took some consideration, but I'm super happy with my choice. I don’t sew vintage patterns often, but this one was an exception. It’s Simplicity 9637, technically a jacket pattern but if you omit the sleeves and make a few tweaks, it’s a fabulous vest. I love that it has bust darts for bodice shaping, somewhat of a rarity in modern vest patterns. The quilted high collar and rounded front hem are giving me Star Wars, and also remind me of @minimalistmachinist’s style exploration of what she termed #softapocalypse. Peep the 1980 instructions (last photo) for what Simplicity calls “trapunto top-stitching”. I am pretty sure that this is just regular quilting, not trapunto, but it was cool to see an extensive set of instructions for how to handle multiple layers of fabric + batting with this wrap-around collar. So points for complexity but not accurate terminology, I guess? Fit mods: I measure into a size 18 in this pattern, one size above the envelope. I bought a size 14 and it still fits, but I did add vertical length through the upper chest and back. I also shaved about an inch off the shoulder seam so that the edge of the vest would sit closer to my natural shoulder (this pattern was prob meant to be worn over shoulder pads). Fabric: The instructions direct you quilt your own vest with 2 layers of fabric + batting. I had a scrap of this @merchantandmills soft stitch jacquard, which was a perfect pre-quilted exterior, no batting needed. The interior is lined with their 185 linen in Vanilla, a perfect match. Credit where it’s due: I first saw a glimpse of this pattern and the idea for turning it into a vest in @saint.clairs.scissors feed. She was kind enough to tell me the pattern number, so I am grateful to her for sharing the info and idea. Check out her feed for many more awesome versions of this vest. Hello Friends! It’s been awhile, but life happens. I have been secretively sewing away, but not sharing since settling into a new house is a process. I don’t know about the rest of you sewist, but finding the perfect t-shirt pattern is a journey. BUT! I think I discovered mine. When I saw @needlesharpny June 2023 subscription box was the @truebias #rioringertshirt I knew I had to give it a try. I selected Pink Ribbons Navy Cotton Jersey fabric by @cottonandsteel designed by @oka_emi. Because I’m still a novice at sewing clothes, like a good sewist, I made a toile using a cotton jersey knit I had in my stash from @joann_stores. I would have been devastated had I made an ill fitting t-shirt out of this beautiful fabric which came with the subscription box. Today I wore the second @truebias #rioringertshirt made using the @guthrieghani sewing society kit. There was enough white ribbing to make contrast cuffs and neckband. The fabric is less stretchy than the white so this one is a better fit I think. After a morning coffee, a stroll past some giant Easter eggs we visited the Roman Bishops Basilica and the Small Basilica. These are full of fantastic mosaics. Plovdiv is full of surprises! Here is my #topnine2023 featuring almost all of my go to sewing patterns. It was the year I turned 50, and a real mix of highlights and difficulties personally and for many. It was also the year that saw war, conflict and the destruction of life intensify and not just limited to Israel-Palestine, and Russia-Ukraine. As a parent and educator I continue to worry deeply about the world we are leaving for the generations after us. It was a year that many of us struggled to know if posting our recent sewing makes was something that we should continue to do, and something that I'm still uncertain about. However, I'm certain that I'm grateful to be able to sew and for the peace and calmness that creating using my hands gives me, and I'm grateful for the Instagram sewing community. Sewing, and now fostering kittens, (and my family of course) have brought joy and positivity to my 2023. I’ve been meaning to make myself a longer tee shirt dress for ages, and I thought it would be a nice palate cleanser after the complexity of the Jesse jumpsuit! This is the True Bias Rio Ringer, with an extra chunk added to the bottom with some side splits to make it a long midi. It came together so easily, it would have been super fast if my coverstitch hadn’t spat the dummy and refused to do anything with this rib knit. Things have slowed down on the sewing front and I'd love to say that it is because I'm studying hard for my Master's but things have slowed down on that front too! My school has a January to November academic year so I haven't started my summer break yet and I'm knackered. We're also getting ready to move at the end of the month too - our 9th move since 2016 🤦. Hot off the machine, my newest fall ‘fit in new fabrics from @ewefibers. I’m in the midst of some major deadline sewing, but as soon as we got these fabrics in the shop I was struck with inspiration and knew I had to whip something up. Luckily both patterns are super simple and the whole outfit took just a few hours of sewing. On top I’m wearing the #truebiasrio in our new Reese rib knit. This fabric is super soft and stretchy, but not overly clingy. I see many more Reece layering pieces in my future this fall. I wanted to try a new technique and used my serger to do a lettuce hem, and am very pleased with how it turned out! 🥬 My skirt is another #swshenrietta by @spaghetti_western_sewing and I need everyone to do yourself a favor and make this skirt asap! I sewed this one in our new Porter heavyweight cotton in the color pistachio. I love how weighty but soft it feels, and I know I will wear it so much for fall. As a former horse girl, a skirt hater, and someone always striving to look hot and mysterious while running errands, it was impossible to resist the @spaghetti_western_sewing Henrietta skirt for long, especially with so many cute versions flooding my feed! This mysterious errand running look is actually my muslin that I’ve been wearing irl. The white cotton is giving Sandy Liang and Cecilie Bahnsen energy and I’m into it. I sewed the XL and it has a delightful amount of volume. The sweater is old RTW, and the bag is a #crosstowncrescentbag from an @ewefibers bundle 🥐 I’m also on a simultaneous quest for the perfect baby tee pattern, and the #truebiasrio has emerged as as the front runner. I sized down to the 18 in the B cup range (size chart puts me in a 22), and shortened it by 6 whole inches! I’m concentrating on finishing up some projects I’ve wanted to make for a while on my summer staycation (sewcation!) and finally made this #rioringerdress that I’ve had on my summer sewing list for at least 3 or four years 😂😎 I would have worn the heck out of this in the 90s/2000s, definitely with some cute barrettes and maybe some Björk buns, and maybe it’s pure nostalgia but I love the heck out of it now. Ringer tees for life! 🍊 Pattern: @truebias #rioringertshirt - I’ve made many of the T-shirts but all fitted, so for this dress I checked the finished measurement chart and then sized up and based it on my H measurement (currently 41.5”) so this is the size 12. My B measurement puts me at a 6-8, but instead of grading I went with a straight size 12. Which is probably the size I’ll cut my next T-shirt versions out of, I like the fit so much. I hacked about 3” off the hem to make it this mini length (I’m 5’4”). Genuinely love this pattern, it’s so fast and so well drafted. Transitional weather is upon us here in Denver. With highs currently in the 70s I am grabbing those simple long sleeved makes in my memade wardrobe. This Rio tshirt hack where I added long sleeves has become one of my most worn fall garments. I love the close fit of the tshirt because it's easy to layer and can be tucked into high waisted pants if I want. Giving my linen Coe trousers a place of honor on the grid today. This linen pair was the first pair that I made, and they look and feel quite different than the denim pair that I posted last week. Swipe all the way through for some fit videos. In linen, the Coe leg is much more fluid and lightweight, and you can really see the drape of the fabric in the leg. My denim pair is much more structured, so the leg volume stands away from the body a bit more, and the denim “collapses” in different areas depending on how I’m moving. In comparison, these linen trousers have a much smoother look to them overall. The barrel silhouette is a little less pronounced in linen, and because I didn’t add contrast top stitching to these, the curved side seam isn’t as noticeable compared to my denim pair. IMHO, these trousers feel a little fancier in linen compared to denim, and they are a great wardrobe staple. Fit: My measurements are W32”, H42” and I cut a size 12. I am 4” taller than the block, so the only adjustments I made were for length. I added 1” to the front rise, 1/2” to the back rise, and 2” to the leg. The fit through the crotch and hip on these trousers is *chef’s kiss* 😙🤌🏻🤌🏻. Thank you, @daughterjudypatterns. I have some minor pocket gaping in this pair, which is normal for on-seam pockets like this. After more wear, this linen might relax a bit more and decrease the gaping. So I could have left the pockets as is for my second pair, but tomorrow I’ll have a blog post about how I resolved the gaping on my denim version. *Spolier alert* my body isn’t the problem here, construction techniques and fabric choice also affect fit. Fabric: This is the 6.2 oz Nevada linen from @stonemountainfabric in Bronze. Linen is a great choice for Coe, and I’m a fan of the heavier weight when making trousers. I’ve used lighter weight linens for trousers in the past, but after a season or two of heavy wear, they start to feel dangerously thin to me, especially in the thighs and seat. But this linen has held up very well in multiple pairs of trousers over the years. It’s my favorite. Stay tuned for a fitting deep dive tomorrow. 🤓 #coetrouser #truebiasrio #rioringertshirt

More photographs of my short break to Hue, Vietnam. Yesterday we went to the former DMZ and border between North and South Vietnam. The first image first image shows the bridge across the river that divided the country from 22 July 1954 to 2 July 1976. I.ages 2 and 3 are of the Vịnh Mốc tunnel complex strategically located on the border of North Vietnam and South Vietnam. The tunnels were built to shelter people from the intense bombing. It was constructed in several stages beginning in 1966 and used until early 1972. The complex grew to include wells, kitchens, rooms for each family and spaces for healthcare. Around sixty families lived in the tunnels; as many as 17 children were born inside the tunnels. The tunnels were a success and no villagers lost their lives. 6 of the entrances face the sea. Lunch was the best Pho that I've ever had, then we went to the Quảng Trị Citadel, a 19th-century fort. A memorial is in the centre of the citadel commemorating 81 days and nights of fighting in1972. Currently, it is the largest park in Quang Tri Town. It is considered by the locals as a "Spiritual Land", because it is believed that every inch of land in the area contains ordnance, but more significantly blood and bones of soldiers on both sides. The incense stick displays were pretty as was the bridge in Hue at night. I'm really not a fan of all the scooters and bikes in Vietnam as they're everywhere! Finally posting this cutie. I love the #rioringertshirt and #rioringerdress from @truebias but I wanted it maxi length. So I lengthened the pattern by comparing the pattern piece to a maxi dress in my closet. I graded from a size 4 at the waist to a size 8 at the hips to accommodate my booty. I also decided to add some side slits to allow for movement. I looked at other maxi dress patterns to see where their slits hit and based it off that. In terms of sewing the slits, I just folded the edge back by the 3/8” seam allowance and then used a twin needle to sew them when I sewed the hem, reinforcing the top part of the slit. The worst part of the project was the ribbing fabric. I found the main fabric on a clearance rack at @joann_stores and felt immediately inspired so I just grabbed the only white ribbing I could find. It was waaaay too thick for this pattern because the collar and cuffs of this pattern require you to see through 3 layers of the ribbing plus the main fabric at once. I probably should have just attached it differently without the neat fold over edge, but hindsight it 20/20. I ended up cutting down the folded over part I side to eliminate bulk, so just don’t peep the guts 🫣 Overall, I really love it and that I’m feeling more confidence in tweaking designs to be what I want them to be! 💛

I haven’t had the time or inclination to sew much recently but the August #fabricgodmotherdreamwardrobe gave me the nudge I needed to make the perfect transitional dress in time for my youngest granddaughter’s 1st birthday celebrations. This is the @fridaypatterncompany #saltwaterslip and its perfect for layering - here over a @truebias #rioringertshirt and under a chunky cardigan. The fabric is a lovely Fabric Godmother crepe. I made a size S based on my measurements but ended up taking in about 5cm in total between the side and back seams as I like a slimmer silhouette so I’ll make an xs next time. Hot off the machine, my newest fall ‘fit in new fabrics from @ewefibers. I’m in the midst of some major deadline sewing, but as soon as we got these fabrics in the shop I was struck with inspiration and knew I had to whip something up. Luckily both patterns are super simple and the whole outfit took just a few hours of sewing. On top I’m wearing the #truebiasrio in our new Reese rib knit. This fabric is super soft and stretchy, but not overly clingy. I see many more Reece layering pieces in my future this fall. I wanted to try a new technique and used my serger to do a lettuce hem, and am very pleased with how it turned out! 🥬 My skirt is another #swshenrietta by @spaghetti_western_sewing and I need everyone to do yourself a favor and make this skirt asap! I sewed this one in our new Porter heavyweight cotton in the color pistachio. I love how weighty but soft it feels, and I know I will wear it so much for fall. Transitional weather is upon us here in Denver. With highs currently in the 70s I am grabbing those simple long sleeved makes in my memade wardrobe. This Rio tshirt hack where I added long sleeves has become one of my most worn fall garments. I love the close fit of the tshirt because it's easy to layer and can be tucked into high waisted pants if I want. My last makes of 2023. I had intended for this to be my Christmas dress. An easy Nikko that I could whip up quickly before traveling for the holidays. Nope. This was my third attempt at a Nikko dress and I’ve just had a hard time with the fit, specifically in the back (last vid). Too much fabric. I tried taking it in on the side seams but it wasn’t enough. Ultimately, I didn’t have it figured out before traveling so. I guess it’s a New Years dress. I’ve realized I need to cut the Nikko back in two pieces so I can take out extra fabric using the back seam. Or find a different pattern for a long, fitted, knit dress. But for now, I’m okay with a matching set. //Pattern: Top is a mashup of the #truebiasrio bodice, size 10, with #truebiasnikko sleeves, size 8. The skirt is the #truebiasnikkodress, originally size 8 but I took in quite a bit on the side seams before chopping the skirt off. //Mods: I chopped the skirt off a few inches above the waist, folded over and stitched the top, and slid in 3” elastic. I had to cut out a new top bodice since I chopped the skirt high up into the shirt area. I decided I didn’t want the mock neck so I chose to use the Rio in a larger size so it would be a little looser. I didn’t have enough fabric to also cut out new sleeves so I used the sleeves from the dress, which needed to be slightly stretched to fit the Rio armholes. //Fabric: Houndstooth wool/knit blend from @madewithharmony that is softer than I expected. I felt the need for red gingham pants, obviously. Here they are in all their summery, picnic tableclothy glory. Pattern: #truebiasdani by @truebias, size 4 graded to a 6 at hips and below, in @blackbirdfabrics linen Mods: waistband reduced to use 1 1/2” elastic and omit paper bag top, shortened legs by probably 4”, maybe 1/4” width taken out and graded at the sides to make them less barrel-legged, and 1/2” taken out of front crotch curve to reduce FUPA bagging. I don’t sew vintage patterns often, but this one was an exception. It’s Simplicity 9637, technically a jacket pattern but if you omit the sleeves and make a few tweaks, it’s a fabulous vest. I love that it has bust darts for bodice shaping, somewhat of a rarity in modern vest patterns. The quilted high collar and rounded front hem are giving me Star Wars, and also remind me of @minimalistmachinist’s style exploration of what she termed #softapocalypse. Peep the 1980 instructions (last photo) for what Simplicity calls “trapunto top-stitching”. I am pretty sure that this is just regular quilting, not trapunto, but it was cool to see an extensive set of instructions for how to handle multiple layers of fabric + batting with this wrap-around collar. So points for complexity but not accurate terminology, I guess? Fit mods: I measure into a size 18 in this pattern, one size above the envelope. I bought a size 14 and it still fits, but I did add vertical length through the upper chest and back. I also shaved about an inch off the shoulder seam so that the edge of the vest would sit closer to my natural shoulder (this pattern was prob meant to be worn over shoulder pads). Fabric: The instructions direct you quilt your own vest with 2 layers of fabric + batting. I had a scrap of this @merchantandmills soft stitch jacquard, which was a perfect pre-quilted exterior, no batting needed. The interior is lined with their 185 linen in Vanilla, a perfect match. Credit where it’s due: I first saw a glimpse of this pattern and the idea for turning it into a vest in @saint.clairs.scissors feed. She was kind enough to tell me the pattern number, so I am grateful to her for sharing the info and idea. Check out her feed for many more awesome versions of this vest. I guess it’s probably time for me to finally post this one. It’s been finished for a bit, but I wasn’t going to show it off until it had fulfilled its purpose, so to speak. The Road Case tee is an exercise in “being the merch you want to see in the world”. It’s actually a @truebias Rio in black cotton jersey and grey cotton rib from @naturesfabrics I have a photo saved somewhere (of course I do) of John Lodge from the Moodies tour of Australia in 1983, and tucked in the far back corner is one of his road cases, and I said to myself “HEY. Why has no one ever thought this would be fantastic merch?” …as I have discovered, it’s actually because even the band mistakes you for crew at a glance. 🙃 Regardless, if I ever decide to see Justin perform, I would 100% make a second one with ‘Hayward’ on the back, but for now, I’m good with this one. I’ll admit that it’s a little difficult for me to wear in public, partially because it still feels terminally uncool (you’ll always be cool to me though, fellas), partially because I think it’s all just so close to me and I’m such a private person and I hate anyone knowing I have an interest in anything. (It’s 100% easier for me to share myself with complete strangers because if you don’t like me, I don’t ever have to see you again.)

Fresh off the machine! My bright yellow linen #saundraskirt is summer perfection! I bought this Cloud Linen a year or two ago from @matchymatchysewingclub and it was a bit less acid-highlighter and a bit more primary than I was expecting. It took me a while to decide what to sew, but I’m so glad I took the leap with this skirt from @hisydgraham 💛🌻🌼😎🐥🍋 I graded between sizes 24-26 and shortened the skirt by 3” to get the perfect long midi length (I’m 5’2”). I made the plain view and omitted the pockets to reduce bulk, and also skipped the French seams (even though that would be a beautiful finish) bc I was lazy and wanted a quick finish! The top is yet another #truebiasrio I finished last week in a md-weight rib knit. It ain’t broke, so I don’t fix it. Have worn this one several times already! 🍎 #SewFruity24 Entry 2 🍎 This is my final entry for Sew Fruity, if it looks a little off it’s because I took photos for this at the beginning of the month with a different background and it really bugged me 😂 I made this tshirt a while ago but felt like it was missing something. As it was sew fruity month I thought it would be fun to get creative so I got my wooden block prints and fabric paint. I love how it turned out, it was just what it was missing. As a former horse girl, a skirt hater, and someone always striving to look hot and mysterious while running errands, it was impossible to resist the @spaghetti_western_sewing Henrietta skirt for long, especially with so many cute versions flooding my feed! This mysterious errand running look is actually my muslin that I’ve been wearing irl. The white cotton is giving Sandy Liang and Cecilie Bahnsen energy and I’m into it. I sewed the XL and it has a delightful amount of volume. The sweater is old RTW, and the bag is a #crosstowncrescentbag from an @ewefibers bundle 🥐 I’m also on a simultaneous quest for the perfect baby tee pattern, and the #truebiasrio has emerged as as the front runner. I sized down to the 18 in the B cup range (size chart puts me in a 22), and shortened it by 6 whole inches! Tomato tee is spoonflower jersey designed by @blindthesun 😍🍅 I’m completely obsessed with everything about it, and managed to sew a pair of matching undies from the scraps. Giving my linen Coe trousers a place of honor on the grid today. This linen pair was the first pair that I made, and they look and feel quite different than the denim pair that I posted last week. Swipe all the way through for some fit videos. In linen, the Coe leg is much more fluid and lightweight, and you can really see the drape of the fabric in the leg. My denim pair is much more structured, so the leg volume stands away from the body a bit more, and the denim “collapses” in different areas depending on how I’m moving. In comparison, these linen trousers have a much smoother look to them overall. The barrel silhouette is a little less pronounced in linen, and because I didn’t add contrast top stitching to these, the curved side seam isn’t as noticeable compared to my denim pair. IMHO, these trousers feel a little fancier in linen compared to denim, and they are a great wardrobe staple. Fit: My measurements are W32”, H42” and I cut a size 12. I am 4” taller than the block, so the only adjustments I made were for length. I added 1” to the front rise, 1/2” to the back rise, and 2” to the leg. The fit through the crotch and hip on these trousers is *chef’s kiss* 😙🤌🏻🤌🏻. Thank you, @daughterjudypatterns. I have some minor pocket gaping in this pair, which is normal for on-seam pockets like this. After more wear, this linen might relax a bit more and decrease the gaping. So I could have left the pockets as is for my second pair, but tomorrow I’ll have a blog post about how I resolved the gaping on my denim version. *Spolier alert* my body isn’t the problem here, construction techniques and fabric choice also affect fit. Fabric: This is the 6.2 oz Nevada linen from @stonemountainfabric in Bronze. Linen is a great choice for Coe, and I’m a fan of the heavier weight when making trousers. I’ve used lighter weight linens for trousers in the past, but after a season or two of heavy wear, they start to feel dangerously thin to me, especially in the thighs and seat. #rioringerdress out for sunny kicks in stunning Alcobaça 🇵🇹 We had a few child-free hours appreciating its beauty with a pastel de nata 😋 This was my first @truebias Rio Ringer dress after making lots of Rio tees back in May. It’s made in textured cotton knit I bought from @sewcialstudio after missing out on stock from @sewmesunshine! I wear this dress so often and am caught between making another and not wanting to dilute the love of this one. I went up 2 sizes to get a loose fit to make sure it was comfy cool rather than the sleek 70s fit of the original design. I don’t like a close fit in the sun. 🥵 I was also worried this knit would grow a baggy bottom after sitting if I didn’t make it loose tbh! It does a tiny bit but no more than any other jersey would. I wish I’d bought more of this fabric…how often do we say that?! Going into 2023, I feel more focused in many areas of my life, and that includes my plans for sewing my #memade wardrobe. Things have slowed down on the sewing front and I'd love to say that it is because I'm studying hard for my Master's but things have slowed down on that front too! My school has a January to November academic year so I haven't started my summer break yet and I'm knackered. We're also getting ready to move at the end of the month too - our 9th move since 2016 🤦. I did have time to upcycle a couple of my youngest daughter's oversized tees into some more @truebias #rioringertshirts for me. Here's another @truebias #rioringerdress that I whipped up in a couple of hours a few days ago. I made a size 14 and due to the lack of stretch in my fabric it feels a bit tight across my bust. Once again I had to significantly take it in at the hips but I quite like the fit of it now. The fabric is polyester so not the best to wear in this tropical climate but I love the fun print. The red and white ribbing I also bought online when living on China. All in all an easy dress to make and an easy dress to throw on and wear. Here's the "after" of our dyeing process!⁠ ⁠ This dress was a fun hack, and we dyed it green for Jana, not only because she's a redhead who looks great in green, but St. Patrick's day is around the corner, and she needed a new dress, of course!⁠ ⁠ I started sewing a Rio Ringer Dress from @truebias with an added ruffle; I instantly hated it. To be clear, I loved the #rioringerdress but hated my hack. ⁠ ⁠ So, I set out for something different; for days, I've been pining lace dresses on @pinterest but couldn't find anything with a young spirit to it that I didn't despise. ⁠ ⁠ Finally, I found some layers I loved that looked like they were made from stretch lace. ⁠ ⁠ Always making sure to incorporate the scallop trim on the sleeve hem for some extra cuteness!⁠ ⁠ The extra steps I did:⁠ • This layer hack was just a repeated tracing of the Rio from the waist down, each tier shorter than the next, all with a scallop trim. • I made sure to start at the same waist point for each tier.⁠ • I added an inch to the bottom of each tier and tapered the waistband inward about halfway up the side.⁠ • I had Jana try on the existing dress and pin where her waist was. Then I cut the dress in half. ⁠ • I cut a waistband from the existing neckband and made it longer. ⁠ • I first sewed the most extended tier to the waistband and worked backward. ⁠ ⁠ Absolutely nothing came out symmetrical or perfect, but it was fun, and that's all that mattered!⁠ ⁠ Linkin.bio to shop this lace! Me Made May Day 4 and eye eye! My husband and I have travelled 45 minutes to Cyberjaya, the tech hub of Malaysia, established in 1997 and situated on about 3000 hectares of undeveloped land that was previously oil palm plantations. When the rain stops we'll pop into Putrajaya, the 'Intelligent Garden City' or futuristic administrative capital of Malaysia. I'm wearing a newly made @truebias #rioringerdress out of the softest jersey that was on sale in Spotlight and I just love the funky eyes all over it. I’m concentrating on finishing up some projects I’ve wanted to make for a while on my summer staycation (sewcation!) and finally made this #rioringerdress that I’ve had on my summer sewing list for at least 3 or four years 😂😎 I would have worn the heck out of this in the 90s/2000s, definitely with some cute barrettes and maybe some Björk buns, and maybe it’s pure nostalgia but I love the heck out of it now. Ringer tees for life! 🍊 Pattern: @truebias #rioringertshirt - I’ve made many of the T-shirts but all fitted, so for this dress I checked the finished measurement chart and then sized up and based it on my H measurement (currently 41.5”) so this is the size 12. My B measurement puts me at a 6-8, but instead of grading I went with a straight size 12. Which is probably the size I’ll cut my next T-shirt versions out of, I like the fit so much. I hacked about 3” off the hem to make it this mini length (I’m 5’4”). Genuinely love this pattern, it’s so fast and so well drafted. Here is my #topnine2023 featuring almost all of my go to sewing patterns. It was the year I turned 50, and a real mix of highlights and difficulties personally and for many. It was also the year that saw war, conflict and the destruction of life intensify and not just limited to Israel-Palestine, and Russia-Ukraine. As a parent and educator I continue to worry deeply about the world we are leaving for the generations after us. It was a year that many of us struggled to know if posting our recent sewing makes was something that we should continue to do, and something that I'm still uncertain about. However, I'm certain that I'm grateful to be able to sew and for the peace and calmness that creating using my hands gives me, and I'm grateful for the Instagram sewing community. Finally posting this cutie. I love the #rioringertshirt and #rioringerdress from @truebias but I wanted it maxi length. So I lengthened the pattern by comparing the pattern piece to a maxi dress in my closet. I graded from a size 4 at the waist to a size 8 at the hips to accommodate my booty. I also decided to add some side slits to allow for movement. I looked at other maxi dress patterns to see where their slits hit and based it off that. In terms of sewing the slits, I just folded the edge back by the 3/8” seam allowance and then used a twin needle to sew them when I sewed the hem, reinforcing the top part of the slit. The worst part of the project was the ribbing fabric. I found the main fabric on a clearance rack at @joann_stores and felt immediately inspired so I just grabbed the only white ribbing I could find. It was waaaay too thick for this pattern because the collar and cuffs of this pattern require you to see through 3 layers of the ribbing plus the main fabric at once. I probably should have just attached it differently without the neat fold over edge, but hindsight it 20/20. I ended up cutting down the folded over part I side to eliminate bulk, so just don’t peep the guts 🫣 Overall, I really love it and that I’m feeling more confidence in tweaking designs to be what I want them to be! 💛

More photographs of my short break to Hue, Vietnam. Yesterday we went to the former DMZ and border between North and South Vietnam. The first image first image shows the bridge across the river that divided the country from 22 July 1954 to 2 July 1976. I.ages 2 and 3 are of the Vịnh Mốc tunnel complex strategically located on the border of North Vietnam and South Vietnam. The tunnels were built to shelter people from the intense bombing. It was constructed in several stages beginning in 1966 and used until early 1972. The complex grew to include wells, kitchens, rooms for each family and spaces for healthcare. Around sixty families lived in the tunnels; as many as 17 children were born inside the tunnels. The tunnels were a success and no villagers lost their lives. 6 of the entrances face the sea. Lunch was the best Pho that I've ever had, then we went to the Quảng Trị Citadel, a 19th-century fort. A memorial is in the centre of the citadel commemorating 81 days and nights of fighting in1972. Currently, it is the largest park in Quang Tri Town. It is considered by the locals as a "Spiritual Land", because it is believed that every inch of land in the area contains ordnance, but more significantly blood and bones of soldiers on both sides. The incense stick displays were pretty as was the bridge in Hue at night. I'm really not a fan of all the scooters and bikes in Vietnam as they're everywhere! So I made another @truebias #rioringerdress from fabric that I bought in the UK, which my mum posted to Beijing, which we took to Guangzhou and then here to Kuala Lumpur where I finally sewed I up! I’ve been meaning to make myself a longer tee shirt dress for ages, and I thought it would be a nice palate cleanser after the complexity of the Jesse jumpsuit! This is the True Bias Rio Ringer, with an extra chunk added to the bottom with some side splits to make it a long midi. It came together so easily, it would have been super fast if my coverstitch hadn’t spat the dummy and refused to do anything with this rib knit. #rioringerdress out for sunny kicks in stunning Alcobaça 🇵🇹 We had a few child-free hours appreciating its beauty with a pastel de nata 😋 This was my first @truebias Rio Ringer dress after making lots of Rio tees back in May. It’s made in textured cotton knit I bought from @sewcialstudio after missing out on stock from @sewmesunshine! I wear this dress so often and am caught between making another and not wanting to dilute the love of this one. I went up 2 sizes to get a loose fit to make sure it was comfy cool rather than the sleek 70s fit of the original design. I don’t like a close fit in the sun. 🥵 I was also worried this knit would grow a baggy bottom after sitting if I didn’t make it loose tbh! It does a tiny bit but no more than any other jersey would. I wish I’d bought more of this fabric…how often do we say that?!
