My latest make helped me to get over a big sewing fear - bias binding! 🙌 When I first learned to sew, I had a terrible time when I first tried bias binding (slippery fabric and no clue what I was meant to be doing) and I've pretty much avoided it ever since. I knew it would be a useful technique to learn, so I chose the @truebias Calvin dress to get over it - because there's so flippin' much of it! The fear has been well and truly beaten, and I'm so pleased with the finish on this. I graded between the bust and waist size to get the best fit and it's not turned out too badly, and I shortened the length slightly. Very occasionally my children want something made (though not often!) My eldest daughter requested a very specific wrap dress and so I mashed together the #zadiejumpsuit with the #calvinwrapdress. I probably could have winged it, but I needed the security of patterns. However, this is the first time I’ve properly hacked two patterns together. probably my last sewing project for a little bit bc of some upcoming travel. this dress will be for a wedding i’m going to in august. there’s a couple tiny adjustments i still need to make but im very happy with it! pattern: calvin wrap dress by @truebias fabric: cotton from @fableism size and adjustments: i made a size 8 with no mods to the actual pattern pieces, but i made the straps a fixed length instead of adjustable and hemmed this to be above the knee instead of calf length. i think i need to add a tiny snap closure in the center to make sure the two sides stay balanced as i move in this. i also need to shorten the ties. other than that i love it! this was also the first project i cut out with my projector and i loved not having to print and assemble a paper pattern. this pattern doesn’t come with projector files but i was able to use pattern projector to digitally “assemble” it and hide the layers of the sizes i wasn’t using. so cool! i take these pics with my front camera bc its just easier for me to see if i am mostly centered in the frame and the low quality is driving me nuts. and sorry if my droopy peace lily is making you sad. i watered her today she just hasn’t perked up quite yet. alright that’s enough rambling for today. #tbcalvinwrapdress #calvinwrapdress #sewing

Earlier this month I finally cut into this chilli fabric that has ben languishing in my stash for years, prompted by #sewfruity2025 challenge. Fabric is dead stock and print is from 2012 Dolce & Gabbana summer collection. Needles to say - I was all 😍 and very precious about it. I had only 1,3m of chilli viscose so I combined it with some crepe in a matching terracotta colour, to make this colour blocked #calvinwrapdress by @truebias. I love how it turned out and I’m so glad I made it! Calvin wrap dress is such a great pattern and I recommend it wholeheartedly. Centre back seam has a LOT of shaping and thanks to that fit around the waist and bum is spot on - no extra fabric bunching up! Also, wrap around the bust sits lovely and without any gaping nor need for safety pins. I’m really impressed with it. I made size 10 graded to 14 at the hips, with 5cm added to the skirt as I’m on a taller side. Additional plus - both these fabrics were long time stash residents, strap rings and sliders are rescued from a retired bra and pattern I had for years too, so altogether this project cost me nothing! Getting through my stash of fabrics and patterns in no particular order (there once was an order) and may I present this beauty in form of #calvinwrapdress I knew I bought this pattern years ago thinking it’s such a classic, even if I don’t sew it now, next year or year after, it will still be elegant whenever I get to it. And it’s a fairly quick make too! 🧵 pattern is #calvinwrapdress by @truebias 🧵 size 4 (after I made size 2 which was too small) and I’m still not convinced if this is my correct size as the bust area seems to slide sideways a lot. I’m about to put in a hook & eye to see if that helps. 🧵 fabric is soft/washed linen in milk from my stash and I’m wearing a slip dress underneath it, firstly to address the bust area opening issue and secondly, to make it opaque as the white linen is quite see through. My Calvin Wrap Dress! I purchased this @atelierbrunette fabric, one of my favorite designs, with the intention of sewing this dress, especially because the premade matching bias tape was also available. I graded from a 10 at the bust to a 12 waist/hip, and I think that worked out pretty well! I did not lengthen, though I am 2” taller than the drafted height of 5’5”. I may need to sew in a snap at the bust, but I think it’ll also be cute with a sweater over it! I am on the hunt for a good strapless bra or pattern! If you know of one, I’d love to hear about it. I tried the Esplanade by Orange Lingerie, but gave up on the fitting. I made this wrap dress last summer and wore it so much but didn’t manage to get photos to share. I took it on holiday this year and it was perfect to wear in the evening to dinner The pattern is the @truebias Calvin wrap dress and the fabric is a cotton lawn from @heysewsister.co.uk bought last year The fabric is perfect for the wrap dress and made a wonderful, light dress to manage in the heat. I loved the bold, floral design and think it works so well for the wrap dress I really enjoyed the construction of dress and the instructions were really clear to follow. The Calvin wrap can be sewn as a dress or a top with exposed bias binding that extends into long ties to form a bow closure. It has rings and sliders which create adjustable shoulder straps for an easy fit. The Gingham Calvin Dress ✨ Made in time for my last summer holiday of the year, a couple of weeks back. Which is lucky, because it now feels like autumn here in London.  I've seen many many pretty versions of the @truebias Calvin Wrap Dress, and it was only a matter of time until I made my own. The gingham pattern is one of my favourites, this is the third gingham dress i've made this year. I loved @made_by_madeleine.claire 's version and so my dress is inspired by hers.  I made the dress as per the instructions, aside from one minor change.  I couldn't get to grips with the french tack. I made a #calvinwrapdress for a recent wedding (I’ve worn green to the last three weddings I’ve attended — seems like I’m sticking to a theme, haha 💚) Originally, I intended this to be a wearable toile, but I ended up wanting to wear it to the event because I loved the fabric — and I didn’t have enough of it to make a second, optimized version. Luckily, it fit pretty well right from the start, and honestly, I’m not sure I could have made significant improvements without risking the overall fit 🤷🏽‍♀️ If I had the skills, I probably would’ve done a small bust adjustment, since the dress is drafted for a C cup — which I definitely don’t have. There’s a bit of extra room in the bust area, but with a bra (with a little push-up) underneath and the ability to adjust how tightly it wraps, it worked out fine! I also added a small snap button at the neckline for a bit of extra comfort and coverage. And I made my boyfriend a matching handkerchief using the fabric scraps – which disappeared during the evening 😂 I guess the fabric was a bit too slippery. ➡️ Pattern: #calvinwrapdress @truebias – I made a size 0 and graded to a size 2 at the hips ➡️ Fabric: If I remember correctly, it’s a viscose twill from @meetmilk_fabric

Hot off the sewing machine and worn straight out is this beautiful @truebias #calvinwrapdress and my second one I've made so far. Similar to my first make, I've shortened the dress to knee length and shortened the wrap around ties. Everything is bias bound to create the shoulder straps and the ties, and just added rings and sliders to adjust, such a clever way to finish everything off. The only downside is I keep forgetting to add a label inside first! STOP what you’re doing..... I’ve found the perfect dress pattern..... @truebias #calvinwrapdress By choosing different fabric you can get so much out of this pattern. It’s simply stunning... Summer dress ✔️ Elegant✔️ It is a true wrap dress pattern with a buttonhole on the side seam, and adjustable straps. The pattern is so easy, the instructions are easy to follow and it is a must have!! I made this in an Italian Rayon “Flower Boom” from @stitch_fabric1 and it’s like a gorgeous silk, soft and drapes beautifully. I must admit making the bias binding was a little fiddly but taking my time it just paid off! I can dress it down with a denim jacket and sandals or take it out for a few cocktails There will definitely be more sewn up quickly! Proud of this dress I saved before leaving for Texas. This has the stupidest, tiniest sleeves and I couldn’t lift my arms - I cut off the sleeves and eyeballed cutting into the bodice, then used directions from #calvinwrapdress and #saltwaterslip as guidance for making the straps. Hi sewing pals! I haven’t been posting a lot as I’ve been dealing with neck and back pain-focused more on my rehab. I was really excited tho to use this beautiful AGF Evolve rayon and whip up something for my 7 year wedding anniversary💚 made the #calvinwrapdress from True Bias, and it turned out….okay. I underlined it as the print was a little sheer (which was kind of fun to think through!) The bust fit ended up a little weird on me, and possibly a little too much fabric at the waist, but it’s so silky and it sort of molded to my body while wearing it so it feels pretty nice to wear anyways:) either way feels good to get at least one idea out of my head and into the world! Hi it’s been a while since I made a sewing post! I’ve been working on a big project for the last few months but took a little break to make this #calvinwrapdress #calvinwraptop In love with this silk from @stonemountainfabric upstairs discount lair. Had to include a video of its color shifting in the sun! I took a huge monster wedge out of the neckline cause it gaped like crazy on my muslin, an alteration I often have to do but still throws me a bit into the “how is my body SO different in this way/how does anyone NOT need to do this” space. This time showing off my #calvinwrapdress by @truebias 💗 This was a really straightforward make and I managed to squeeze it out of a 1 1/5 meter piece of Tencel from @merchantandmills. Warning - this fabric creases a lot like linen! Sometime in the last year, I decided I wanted to make a handmade wardrobe. I've been sewing all my life, but never very seriously. I am like my dad in always wanting to make something, do something with my hands. When he passed away last year, sewing became my mechanism for reaching back and connecting with him. I have learned so many new skills. I sew almost every day, even if it's for 10 or 15 minutes. I love the feeling of finishing something and wearing it. I'm finding that it's more thrilling to wear things after the second or third or fourth wash, when I can really appreciate my new skills. Summer dress ✔️ Elegant✔️ It is a true wrap dress pattern with a buttonhole on the side seam, and adjustable straps. The pattern is so easy, the instructions are easy to follow and it is a must have!! I made this in an Italian Rayon “Flower Boom” from @stitch_fabric1 and it’s like a gorgeous silk, soft and drapes beautifully. I must admit making the bias binding was a little fiddly but taking my time it just paid off! My latest make helped me to get over a big sewing fear - bias binding! 🙌 When I first learned to sew, I had a terrible time when I first tried bias binding (slippery fabric and no clue what I was meant to be doing) and I've pretty much avoided it ever since. I knew it would be a useful technique to learn, so I chose the @truebias Calvin dress to get over it - because there's so flippin' much of it! The fear has been well and truly beaten, and I'm so pleased with the finish on this. I graded between the bust and waist size to get the best fit and it's not turned out too badly, and I shortened the length slightly. My Calvin Wrap Dress! I purchased this @atelierbrunette fabric, one of my favorite designs, with the intention of sewing this dress, especially because the premade matching bias tape was also available. I graded from a 10 at the bust to a 12 waist/hip, and I think that worked out pretty well! I did not lengthen, though I am 2” taller than the drafted height of 5’5”. I may need to sew in a snap at the bust, but I think it’ll also be cute with a sweater over it! I am on the hunt for a good strapless bra or pattern! If you know of one, I’d love to hear about it. I tried the Esplanade by Orange Lingerie, but gave up on the fitting. I’m definitely in my wrap dress era after seeing this beauty. I’ve had this pattern for at least 2 years and after seeing so many beautiful versions I was finally motivated to sew it and I’m glad I did because it’s one of my fav makes this year. The pattern was very easy and simple to sew, didn’t run into any issues. Surprisingly it does not gape open like most wrap dress patterns tend to do and the length is perfect on me. I was trying to make an "orange you glad" joke but I couldn't round it out 🍊 After eyeing this pattern for some time I finally committed and used a fabric from my stash to check the fit. I measured as a 0 & 6 in the size chart and decided to sew a 2 due to the wrap construction of the dress. This is one of the first fabrics I bought after getting back into sewing a few years back after a short hiatus post uni, and before I found out about the instagram sewing community! Finally got a decent picture of the first Calvin wrap dress I made! I made this one 2 years ago and still love it now - it’s definitely one of my most worn dresses. The style & shape really work for me 👌🏼 This one is made in a lovely viscose from @1stforfabrics - long since sold out, but they have many other viscose options that would be perfect for a Calvin! Getting through my stash of fabrics and patterns in no particular order (there once was an order) and may I present this beauty in form of #calvinwrapdress I knew I bought this pattern years ago thinking it’s such a classic, even if I don’t sew it now, next year or year after, it will still be elegant whenever I get to it. And it’s a fairly quick make too! 🧵 pattern is #calvinwrapdress by @truebias 🧵 size 4 (after I made size 2 which was too small) and I’m still not convinced if this is my correct size as the bust area seems to slide sideways a lot. I’m about to put in a hook & eye to see if that helps. 🧵 fabric is soft/washed linen in milk from my stash and I’m wearing a slip dress underneath it, firstly to address the bust area opening issue and secondly, to make it opaque as the white linen is quite see through. Had the most fun last weekend celebrating the wedding of @baking.dangerously and @sabergid510. And of course I made my dress! It's the @truebias Calvin dress, which I sewed with some gorgeous @lisetailor viscose from a few seasons ago. It was a blast to sew, and I felt like a million bucks. I've never been a big wrap dress person, but I'm coming around; I've sewn two that I think are the most elegant dresses I own. Of course, I'm terrible at taking photos (I was having too much fun!), so this one from before the wedding will have to do! Couldn’t wait to get my hands on this sweet block print (“Irene” by iSeeFabric). The base colour is this wonderfully weird yellowy chartreuse that I for sure avoided in the past bc I assumed it wouldn’t suit me, but I really like it and thus ! I am wearing it. I paired it with the @truebias #calvinwraptop pattern. For the top I did a significant SBA (small bust adjustment) which ended up eliminating the dart, and subsequently creating gaping around the front armpit area; so I’m realizing darts are essential here and I clearly need better pattern comprehension than I have to alter a wrap for bust size. After the fact, I threw in some mini darts to reduce the gaping and this fits better now. Not perfect but we’ll enough for me! On bottom I’m wearing some light weight denim @annaallenclothing #persephonepants with added bum pockets. These are awesome for the warmer weather! The jacket pictured is the (free pattern!) @fabricsstorecom #paolaworkwearjacket made from @iseefabric linen. The fabric for the wrap top and the jacket were both generously provided by @iseefabric as part of our collaboration 💛🧡. Many of their fabrics are organic and locally produced, but I forgot to inquire with them re: the story behind this particular fabric line, so I can’t speak to its origin story (specific re:where/how it was produced, Etc) - sorry! I do know that it is hand stamped, 100% cotton, made in India.

MMM24 day 20 - lurking in another park This was not the first jumpsuit I wore today - having delved into the wardrobe to take out things to analyse, I decided to give my old ankara Zadie a go. However once I was sat at my sewing machine redoing the straps on this jumpsuit, I realised I had split the bum on the Ankara version, so post strap fixing, I put this black linen blend on instead, as it clearly has more give. This is the second time my butt has rent the seams of some trousers in as many days, which is a stark reminder (if any was needed) that my menopausal bottom is not the same as it used to be. So having discarded the Ankara Zadie and a denim one to the bag for the loft (I'm not ready to get rid of those babies just yet), I took to Instagram to find some more Zadie inspo as I am in obvious need of a Zadie update. There are so many Zadies out there it can seem a bit of a minefield but an olive green sleeveless version popped up that I had liked already, and made me think that would be a good use of my green viscose linen. Also, @21stcenturybungalow told me she was planning on making an olive green Zadie too, so now we can be twins! The only issues I have left to solve are - do I do an FBA on my current pattern, simply add in a couple of cms at the shoulder length, or recut a larger size. And do I hack it with no sleeves AND a v neck back too? And maybe pop some elastic in at the back waist?? So many questions! Last night I decided I needed a new dress. So at 7pm the construction began! I chose the True Bias Calvin Wrap dress. It's been in my queue for sometime; I had a different black fabric picked out for it. But I decided to go colorful and use this instead. Because why not?! Of course once I chose it, I realized I didn't have enough fabric for the pattern. 😆 It was definitely a Tim Gunn make it work kinda moment, as I was determined to use it. Seven yards of bias tape is no joke. I shortened the dress by 10 inches, and still I might hem it more. I finished around 1am. Haha. I'm really stoked with it! Hot off the sewing machine and worn straight out is this beautiful @truebias #calvinwrapdress and my second one I've made so far. Similar to my first make, I've shortened the dress to knee length and shortened the wrap around ties. Everything is bias bound to create the shoulder straps and the ties, and just added rings and sliders to adjust, such a clever way to finish everything off. The only downside is I keep forgetting to add a label inside first! #memadeholiday day 3! This time showing off my #calvinwrapdress by @truebias 💗 This was a really straightforward make and I managed to squeeze it out of a 1 1/5 meter piece of Tencel from @merchantandmills. Warning - this fabric creases a lot like linen! I bought the bias binding ready made from @hobbycrafthq (😮) and in hindsight it was probably too stiff for a dress (but who has the time to iron meters of bias binding 🤯) I didn’t quite have time to attach a popper on the wrap part so had to hold it in place with a safety pin (swipe to the third pic!) but it does layer nicely over any shirt for more modesty. #truebiascalvin #wrapdress #sewingproject #sewingsustainably #sustainablefashion #beginnerssewing #memadewardrobe #memade
