My last makes of 2023. I had intended for this to be my Christmas dress. An easy Nikko that I could whip up quickly before traveling for the holidays. Nope. This was my third attempt at a Nikko dress and I’ve just had a hard time with the fit, specifically in the back (last vid). Too much fabric. I tried taking it in on the side seams but it wasn’t enough. Ultimately, I didn’t have it figured out before traveling so. I guess it’s a New Years dress. I’ve realized I need to cut the Nikko back in two pieces so I can take out extra fabric using the back seam. Or find a different pattern for a long, fitted, knit dress. But for now, I’m okay with a matching set. //Pattern: Top is a mashup of the #truebiasrio bodice, size 10, with #truebiasnikko sleeves, size 8. The skirt is the #truebiasnikkodress, originally size 8 but I took in quite a bit on the side seams before chopping the skirt off. //Mods: I chopped the skirt off a few inches above the waist, folded over and stitched the top, and slid in 3” elastic. I had to cut out a new top bodice since I chopped the skirt high up into the shirt area. I decided I didn’t want the mock neck so I chose to use the Rio in a larger size so it would be a little looser. I didn’t have enough fabric to also cut out new sleeves so I used the sleeves from the dress, which needed to be slightly stretched to fit the Rio armholes. //Fabric: Houndstooth wool/knit blend from @madewithharmony that is softer than I expected. The latest fabric release from @anga_textiles is so beautiful! This is the first piece I’ve made, a #truebiasrio dress @truebias I rarely sew vertical lines and I found it very fast no need to match side seam lines😄 I highly recommend this fabric is soft, stretchy and perfect for summer ! #angatextilesandyou

Fresh off the machine! My bright yellow linen #saundraskirt is summer perfection! I bought this Cloud Linen a year or two ago from @matchymatchysewingclub and it was a bit less acid-highlighter and a bit more primary than I was expecting. It took me a while to decide what to sew, but I’m so glad I took the leap with this skirt from @hisydgraham 💛🌻🌼😎🐥🍋 I graded between sizes 24-26 and shortened the skirt by 3” to get the perfect long midi length (I’m 5’2”). I made the plain view and omitted the pockets to reduce bulk, and also skipped the French seams (even though that would be a beautiful finish) bc I was lazy and wanted a quick finish! The top is yet another #truebiasrio I finished last week in a md-weight rib knit. It ain’t broke, so I don’t fix it. Have worn this one several times already! I spent over a year eyeing this fabric, and I'm so glad to have finally bought and sewed it up! Hot off the machine, my newest fall ‘fit in new fabrics from @ewefibers. I’m in the midst of some major deadline sewing, but as soon as we got these fabrics in the shop I was struck with inspiration and knew I had to whip something up. Luckily both patterns are super simple and the whole outfit took just a few hours of sewing. On top I’m wearing the #truebiasrio in our new Reese rib knit. This fabric is super soft and stretchy, but not overly clingy. I see many more Reece layering pieces in my future this fall. I wanted to try a new technique and used my serger to do a lettuce hem, and am very pleased with how it turned out! 🥬 My skirt is another #swshenrietta by @spaghetti_western_sewing and I need everyone to do yourself a favor and make this skirt asap! I sewed this one in our new Porter heavyweight cotton in the color pistachio. I love how weighty but soft it feels, and I know I will wear it so much for fall. As a former horse girl, a skirt hater, and someone always striving to look hot and mysterious while running errands, it was impossible to resist the @spaghetti_western_sewing Henrietta skirt for long, especially with so many cute versions flooding my feed! This mysterious errand running look is actually my muslin that I’ve been wearing irl. The white cotton is giving Sandy Liang and Cecilie Bahnsen energy and I’m into it. I sewed the XL and it has a delightful amount of volume. The sweater is old RTW, and the bag is a #crosstowncrescentbag from an @ewefibers bundle 🥐 I’m also on a simultaneous quest for the perfect baby tee pattern, and the #truebiasrio has emerged as as the front runner. I sized down to the 18 in the B cup range (size chart puts me in a 22), and shortened it by 6 whole inches! Transitional weather is upon us here in Denver. With highs currently in the 70s I am grabbing those simple long sleeved makes in my memade wardrobe. This Rio tshirt hack where I added long sleeves has become one of my most worn fall garments. I love the close fit of the tshirt because it's easy to layer and can be tucked into high waisted pants if I want. Giving my linen Coe trousers a place of honor on the grid today. This linen pair was the first pair that I made, and they look and feel quite different than the denim pair that I posted last week. Swipe all the way through for some fit videos. In linen, the Coe leg is much more fluid and lightweight, and you can really see the drape of the fabric in the leg. My denim pair is much more structured, so the leg volume stands away from the body a bit more, and the denim “collapses” in different areas depending on how I’m moving. In comparison, these linen trousers have a much smoother look to them overall. The barrel silhouette is a little less pronounced in linen, and because I didn’t add contrast top stitching to these, the curved side seam isn’t as noticeable compared to my denim pair. IMHO, these trousers feel a little fancier in linen compared to denim, and they are a great wardrobe staple. Fit: My measurements are W32”, H42” and I cut a size 12. I am 4” taller than the block, so the only adjustments I made were for length. I added 1” to the front rise, 1/2” to the back rise, and 2” to the leg. The fit through the crotch and hip on these trousers is *chef’s kiss* 😙🤌🏻🤌🏻. Thank you, @daughterjudypatterns. I have some minor pocket gaping in this pair, which is normal for on-seam pockets like this. After more wear, this linen might relax a bit more and decrease the gaping. So I could have left the pockets as is for my second pair, but tomorrow I’ll have a blog post about how I resolved the gaping on my denim version. *Spolier alert* my body isn’t the problem here, construction techniques and fabric choice also affect fit. Fabric: This is the 6.2 oz Nevada linen from @stonemountainfabric in Bronze. Linen is a great choice for Coe, and I’m a fan of the heavier weight when making trousers. I’ve used lighter weight linens for trousers in the past, but after a season or two of heavy wear, they start to feel dangerously thin to me, especially in the thighs and seat. I guess it’s probably time for me to finally post this one. It’s been finished for a bit, but I wasn’t going to show it off until it had fulfilled its purpose, so to speak. The Road Case tee is an exercise in “being the merch you want to see in the world”. It’s actually a @truebias Rio in black cotton jersey and grey cotton rib from @naturesfabrics I have a photo saved somewhere (of course I do) of John Lodge from the Moodies tour of Australia in 1983, and tucked in the far back corner is one of his road cases, and I said to myself “HEY. Why has no one ever thought this would be fantastic merch?” …as I have discovered, it’s actually because even the band mistakes you for crew at a glance. 🙃 Regardless, if I ever decide to see Justin perform, I would 100% make a second one with ‘Hayward’ on the back, but for now, I’m good with this one. I’ll admit that it’s a little difficult for me to wear in public, partially because it still feels terminally uncool (you’ll always be cool to me though, fellas), partially because I think it’s all just so close to me and I’m such a private person and I hate anyone knowing I have an interest in anything. (It’s 100% easier for me to share myself with complete strangers because if you don’t like me, I don’t ever have to see you again.)

I don’t sew vintage patterns often, but this one was an exception. It’s Simplicity 9637, technically a jacket pattern but if you omit the sleeves and make a few tweaks, it’s a fabulous vest. I love that it has bust darts for bodice shaping, somewhat of a rarity in modern vest patterns. The quilted high collar and rounded front hem are giving me Star Wars, and also remind me of @minimalistmachinist’s style exploration of what she termed #softapocalypse. Peep the 1980 instructions (last photo) for what Simplicity calls “trapunto top-stitching”. I am pretty sure that this is just regular quilting, not trapunto, but it was cool to see an extensive set of instructions for how to handle multiple layers of fabric + batting with this wrap-around collar. So points for complexity but not accurate terminology, I guess? Fit mods: I measure into a size 18 in this pattern, one size above the envelope. I bought a size 14 and it still fits, but I did add vertical length through the upper chest and back. I also shaved about an inch off the shoulder seam so that the edge of the vest would sit closer to my natural shoulder (this pattern was prob meant to be worn over shoulder pads). Fabric: The instructions direct you quilt your own vest with 2 layers of fabric + batting. I had a scrap of this @merchantandmills soft stitch jacquard, which was a perfect pre-quilted exterior, no batting needed. The interior is lined with their 185 linen in Vanilla, a perfect match. Credit where it’s due: I first saw a glimpse of this pattern and the idea for turning it into a vest in @saint.clairs.scissors feed. She was kind enough to tell me the pattern number, so I am grateful to her for sharing the info and idea. Check out her feed for many more awesome versions of this vest. Today I wore the second @truebias #rioringertshirt made using the @guthrieghani sewing society kit. There was enough white ribbing to make contrast cuffs and neckband. The fabric is less stretchy than the white so this one is a better fit I think. Shorts have a little cut on side of legs that adds to design. Waist doesn't have any elastic/drawstring, but stretch of fabric keeps it up fine. Have an old pair in rotation for a long time! This is my final make of the #closetcoreamy by @closetcorepatterns I #shoppedmyfabricstash and came up with this fabric that I purchased awhile ago at @atex_fabrics I downsized two sizes from the muslin I made last fall. This is a size 12 graded to a size 10 at the hips. I also shortened the body and leg by 1”. There is an invisible zipper in the side seam but I can actually just pull it on without using the zipper. #memademay2022 inspired me to look at my wardrobe from a new perspective, organized according to color. What’s been fun is seeing patterns I didn’t see before, i.e., I love lace apparently. I also love green and white tops. Finished sewing this @truebias Nova jumpsuit last night. Wasn’t sure this was for me when I first saw it, as I’ve not worn, let alone sewn, a jumpsuit! Finally sewed the buttons on my new @sewliberated Estuary Skirt and I love it (did not love sewing the buttonholes, but they actually turned out okay). I love the volume of this linen fabric from @guthrieghani and the bright, vibrant colours. It’s everything I dreamed it would be when I bought the fabric. T-shirt is another @truebias Rio ringer tee I made the other week, these are so quick to sew up. Versions of @truebias Rio Ringer (dress & T-shirt). First up is my beautiful sister wearing a @truebias Rio Ringer dress in really lovely striped viscose jersey from @sewmuchmoor (I think she’s out of stock of the blue but has some of the pink colourway left!). I had intended this dress to be for me and worked really hard to pattern match the sleeves and neckband and was so so pleased with this (see photo 2), and had lined up the side seams to pattern match beautifully too, but while sewing it up there was a bit of a shift in the fabric. Lesson learned there!! After finishing, I had a bit of a sulk as the fit was also a lot looser than the T-shirt version in the same size which fitted me perfectly. So I ended up donating it to my sister, which has given me so much joy - I love seeing her wear something I have made! My original versions of the Rio were some Frankenstein T-shirts made out of jersey scraps from previous projects.
